Atmospheric neutrinos, $nu_e-nu_s$ oscillations, and a novel neutrino evolution equation

If a sterile neutrino nu_s with an eV-scale mass and a sizeable mixing to the electron neutrino exists, as indicated by the reactor and gallium neutrino anomalies, a strong resonance enhancement of nu_e-nu_s oscillations of atmospheric neutrinos should occur in the TeV energy range. At these energies neutrino flavour transitions in the 3+1 scheme depend on just one neutrino mass squared difference and are fully described within a 3-flavour oscillation framework. We demonstrate that the flavour transitions of atmospheric nu_e can actually be very accurately described in a 2-flavour framework, with neutrino flavour evolution governed by an inhomogeneous Schroedinger-like equation. Evolution equations of this type have not been previously considered in the theory of neutrino oscillations.

Another look at synchronized neutrino oscillations

In dense neutrino backgrounds present in supernovae and in the early Universe neutrino oscillations may exhibit complex collective phenomena, such as synchronized oscillations, bipolar oscillations and spectral splits and swaps. We consider in detail possible decoherence effects on the simplest of these phenomena -- synchronized neutrino oscillations that can occur in a uniform and isotropic neutrino gas. We develop an exact formalism of spectral moments of the flavour spin vectors describing such a system and then apply it to find analytical approaches that allow one to study decoherence effects on its late-time evolution. This turns out to be possible in part due to the existence of the (previously unknown) exact conservation law satisfied by the quantities describing the considered neutrino system. Interpretation of the decoherence effects in terms of neutrino wave packet separation is also given, both in the adiabatic and non-adiabatic regimes of neutrino flavour evolution.

Improving Electro-Weak Fits with TeV-scale Sterile Neutrinos

We study the impact of TeV-scale sterile neutrinos on electro-weak precision observables and lepton number and flavour violating decays in the framework of a type-I see-saw extension of the Standard Model. At tree level sterile neutrinos manifest themselves via non-unitarity of the PMNS matrix and at one-loop level they modify the oblique radiative corrections. We derive explicit formulae for the S,T,U parameters in terms of the neutrino masses and mixings and perform a numerical fit to the electro-weak observables. We find regions of parameter space with a sizable active-sterile mixing which provide a better over-all fit compared to the case where the mixing is negligible. Specifically we find improvements of the invisible Z-decay width, the charged-to-neutral-current ratio for neutrino scattering experiments and of the deviation of the W boson mass from the theoretical expectation.

Beta decay and other processes in strong electromagnetic fields

We consider effects of the fields of strong electromagnetic waves on various characteristics of quantum processes. After a qualitative discussion of the effects of external fields on the energy spectra and angular distributions of the final-state particles as well as on the total probabilities of the processes (such as decay rates and total cross sections), we present a simple method of calculating the total probabilities of processes with production of non-relativistic charged particles. Using nuclear beta-decay as an example, we study the weak and strong field limits, as well as the field-induced beta-decay of nuclei stable in the absence of the external fields, both in the tunneling and multi-photon regimes. We also consider the possibility of accelerating forbidden nuclear beta-decays by lifting the forbiddeness due to the interaction of the parent or daughter nuclei with the field of a strong electromagnetic wave. It is shown that for currently attainable electromagnetic fields all effects on total beta-decay rates are unobservably small.

MiniBooNE and LSND data: non-standard neutrino interactions in a (3+1) scheme versus (3+2) oscillations

The recently observed event excess in MiniBooNE anti-neutrino data is in agreement with the LSND evidence for electron anti-neutrino appearance. We propose an explanation of these data in terms of a (3+1) scheme with a sterile neutrino including non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) at neutrino production and detection. The interference between oscillations and NSI provides a source for CP violation which we use to reconcile different results from neutrino and anti-neutrino data. Our best fit results imply NSI at the level of a few percent relative to the standard weak interaction, in agreement with current bounds. We compare the quality of the NSI fit to the one obtained within the (3+1) and (3+2) pure oscillation frameworks. We also briefly comment on using NSI (in an effective two-flavour framework) to address a possible difference in neutrino and anti-neutrino results from the MINOS experiment.

Do charged leptons oscillate?

The question of whether charged leptons oscillate is discussed in detail, with a special emphasis on the coherence properties of the charged lepton states created via weak interactions. This analysis allows one to clarify also an important issue of the theory of neutrino oscillations.

Three-flavour effects and CP- and T-violation in neutrino oscillations

Some theoretical aspects of 3-flavour (3f) neutrino oscillations are reviewed. These include: general properties of 3f oscillation probabilities; matter effects in ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_τoscillations; 3f effects in oscillations of solar, atmospheric, reactor and supernova neutrinos and in accelerator long-baseline experiments; CP and T violation in neutrino oscillations in vacuum and in matter, and the problem of U_{e3}.

Supernova prompt neutronization neutrinos and neutrino magnetic moments

It is shown that the combined action of spin-flavor conversions of supernova neutrinos due to the interactions of their Majorana-type transition magnetic moments with the supernova magnetic fields and flavor conversions due to the mass mixing can lead to the transformation of ν_e born in the neutronization process into their antiparticles \barν_e. Such an effect would have a clear experimental signature and its observation would be a smoking gun evidence for the neutrino transition magnetic moments. It would also signify the leptonic mixing parameter |U_{e3}| in excess of 10^{-2}.

Effects of periodic matter in kaon regeneration

We study the effects of periodic matter in kaon regeneration, motivated by the possibility of parametric resonance in neutrino oscillations. The large imaginary parts of the forward kaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes and the decay width difference $ΔΓ$ prevent a sizable enhancement of the $K_L\to K_S$ transition probability. However, some interesting effects can be produced using regenerators made of alternating layers of two different materials. Despite the fact that the regenerator has a fixed length one can obtain different values for the probability distribution of the $K_L$ decay into a final state. Using a two-arm regenerator set up it is possible to measure the imaginary parts of the $K^0(\bar{K}^0)$-nucleon scattering amplitudes in the correlated decays of the $ϕ$-resonance. Combining the data of the single-arm regenerator experiments with direct and reverse orders of the matter layers in the regenerator one can independently measure the CP violating parameter $δ$.
