Strongly intensive quantities for rapidity correlations of multiplicities

Studies of the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter created in nuclear collisions are typically carried out using event-by-event fluctuations. Well-known way to disentangle statistical and dynamical fluctuations is to construct special observables named strongly intensive which are free from trivial volume fluctuations. Within the color string model behavior of the second-order strongly intensive quantity $Σ$ is completely determined by the two-particle correlation function from a single string and the string fusion mechanism. In this paper, we analyze third-order strongly intensive observable for forward-backward rapidity correlations and test its behavior within the PYTHIA8 model.

Energy loss of heavy-flavor quarks in color string medium

The paper presents preliminary estimates of heavy-flavor (HF) quark energy loss during its propagation through the non-equilibrated medium formed in minimum bias proton-proton (p+p) collisions at LHC energies. The study is inspired by the ongoing hot debates on whether tiny droplets of Quark-Gluon Plasma can be created in collisions of small systems. In this work, we model a p+p event with a fluctuating number of color strings originated from multi-pomeron exchanges. Considered longitudinal oscillations of strings dynamically initialize medium at each time step. Their varying overlaps create fluctuations in the color field energy density that governs the elastic scattering rate of HF quarks with the gluons present within the string volume. We calculate the transverse momentum dependence of the momentum loss for charm (anti-)quarks that are produced in initial hard scatterings and traverse the described environment. The simulation is performed using a developed hybrid approach on an event-by-event basis. Our results show significantly lower HF quarks energy loss compared to that obtained in the expanding hydrodynamic scenario of the new EPOS4HQ model.

Diagram of High Energy Nuclear Collisions

Many new particles, mostly hadrons, are produced in high energy collisions between atomic nuclei. The most popular models describing the hadron production process are based on the creation, evolution and decay of resonances, strings or quark-gluon plasma. The validity of these models is under vivid discussion, and it seems that a common framework for this discussion is missing. Here we introduce the diagram of high energy nuclear collisions, where domains of the dominance of different hadron-production processes in the space of laboratory-controlled parameters, the collision energy and nuclear-mass number of colliding nuclei, are indicated. We argue, the recent experimental results locate boundaries between the domains, allowing for the first time to sketch an example diagram. Finally, we discuss the immediate implications for experimental measurements and model development following the sketch.

Strongly intensive observable between multiplicities in two acceptance windows in a string model

The strongly intensive observable between multiplicities in two acceptance windows separated in rapidity and azimuth is calculated in the model with quark-gluon strings acting as sources. The dependence of this observable on the two-particle correlation function of a string, the width of observation windows and the rapidity gap between them is analyzed. In the case with independent identical strings the model calculation confirms the strongly intensive character of this observable: it is independent of both the mean number of string and its fluctuation. For this case the peculiarities of its behaviour for particles with different electric charges are also analyzed. In the case when the string fusion processes are taken into account and a formation of strings of a few different types takes place in a collision, this observable is proved to be equal to a weighted average of its values for different string types. Unfortunately, in this case through the weight factors this observable becomes dependent on collision conditions and, strictly speaking, can not be considered any more as strongly intensive variable. For a comparison the results of the calculation of considered observable with the PYTHIA event generator are also presented.

Search for the critical point by the NA61/SHINE experiment

NA61/SHINE is a fixed target experiment operating at CERN SPS. Its main goals are to search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter and to study the onset of deconfinement. For these goals a scan of the two dimensional phase diagram ($T$-$μ_{B}$) is being performed at the SPS by measurements of hadron production in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus interactions as a function of collision energy. In this paper the status of the search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter by the NA61/SHINE Collaboration is presented including recent results on proton intermittency, strongly intensive fluctuation observables of multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations. These measurements are expected to be sensitive to the correlation length and, therefore, have the ability to reveal the existence of the critical point via possible non-monotonic behavior. The new NA61/SHINE results are compared to the model predictions.

$N-N$, $P_{T}-N$ and $P_{T}-P_{T}$ fluctuations in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the NA61/SHINE experiment

The NA61/SHINE experiment aims to discover the critical point of strongly interacting matter and study the properties of the onset of deconfinement. For these goals a scan of the two dimensional phase diagram ($T-μ_{B}$) is being performed at the SPS by measurements of hadron production in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus interactions as a function of collision energy. This paper presents preliminary results from Be+Be collisions on pseudorapidity dependences of transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations expressed in terms of strongly intensive quantities. It is shown that non-trivial effects evolve from the Poissonian-like fluctuations for small pseudorapidity intervals with expansion of the acceptance. These fluctuations are supposed to be sensitive to the existence of the critical point. The results will be compared to the predictions from the EPOS model.

Recent results from the NA61/SHINE strong interaction physics programme

The main physics goals of the NA61/SHINE programme on strong interactions are the study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement and the search for signatures of the critical point of strongly interacting matter. For this purpose a scan of the two dimensional phase diagram ($T$-$μ_{B}$) is being performed at the SPS by measurements of hadron production in nucleus-nucleus collisions as a function of collision energy and system size. This contribution presents intriguing results on the energy dependence of hadron spectra and yields in inelastic p+p and centrality selected Be+Be and Ar+Sc collisions. In particular, the energy dependence of the signals of deconfinement, the "horn", "step" and "kink", and new results on fluctuations and correlations are shown and compared with the corresponding data of other experiments and model predictions.

Transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations in Ar+Sc collisions at the CERN SPS from NA61/SHINE

The NA61/SHINE experiment aims to discover the critical point of strongly interacting matter and study the properties of the onset of deconfinement. For these goals a scan of the two dimensional phase diagram ($T$-$μ_{B}$) is being performed at the SPS by measurements of hadron production in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus interactions as a function of collision energy and system size. In this contribution preliminary results on transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations expressed in terms of strongly intensive quantities from the Ar+Sc energy scan will be presented. These fluctuations are expected to be sensitive to the existence of a critical point. The results are compared with results from the p+p and Be+Be energy scan as well as with NA49 measurements.

The NA61/SHINE experiment aims to discover the critical point of strongly interacting matter and study the properties of the onset of deconfinement. For these goals a scan of the two dimensional phase diagram (T-$μ_B$) is being performed at the SPS by measurements of hadron production in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus interactions as a function of collision energy and system size. In this contribution intriguing results on the energy dependence of hadron spectra and yields in inelastic p+p and centrality selected Be+Be collisions will be presented. In particular, the energy dependence of the signals of deconfinement, the 'horn', 'step' and 'kink', in p+p interactions will be presented and compared with the corresponding results from central Pb+Pb collisions from NA49.

Energy dependence of fluctuations in p+p and Be+Be collisions from NA61/SHINE

The main aims of the NA61/SHINE experiment are to discover the critical point of strongly interacting matter and to study properties of the onset of deconfinement. For this goal a two dimensional scan of the phase diagram (T-$μ_{B}$) is being performed at the SPS with measurements of hadron production in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus interactions as a function of collision energy and system size. It is expected that fluctuations of various dynamical quantities will increase close to the critical point. In this contribution recent results of measurements of fluctuations in p+p and Be+Be collisions at SPS energies are presented as well as comparisons with model predictions and corresponding data of other experiments are discussed.
