Weyl-Titchmarsh functions of vector-valued Sturm-Liouville operators on the unit interval

The matrix-valued Weyl-Titchmarsh functions $M(λ)$ of vector-valued Sturm-Liouville operators on the unit interval with the Dirichlet boundary conditions are considered. The collection of the eigenvalues (i.e., poles of $M(λ)$) and the residues of $M(λ)$ is called the spectral data of the operator. The complete characterization of spectral data (or, equivalently, $N\times N$ Weyl-Titchmarsh functions) corresponding to $N\times N$ self-adjoint square-integrable matrix-valued potentials is given, if all $N$ eigenvalues of the averaged potential are distinct.

Inverse resonance scattering for Jacobi operators

We consider the Jacobi operator $(Jf)_n= a_{n-1}f_{n-1}+a_nf_{n+1}+b_nf_n$ on $\Z$ with a real compactly supported sequences $(a_n-1)_{n\in\Z}$ and $(b_n)_{n\in\Z}$. We give the solution of two inverse problems (including characterization): $ (a,b)\to \{$zeros of the reflection coefficient$\}$ and $(a,b)\to \{$bound states and resonances$\}$. We describe the set of "iso-resonance operators $J$", i.e., all operators $J$ with the same resonances and bound states.

Spectral estimates for periodic fourth order operators

We consider the operator $H={d^4dt^4}+{ddt}p{ddt}+q$ with 1-periodic coefficients on the real line. The spectrum of $H$ is absolutely continuous and consists of intervals separated by gaps. We describe the spectrum of this operator in terms of the Lyapunov function, which is analytic on a two-sheeted Riemann surface. On each sheet the Lyapunov function has the standard properties of the Lyapunov function for the scalar case. We describe the spectrum of $H$ in terms of periodic, antiperiodic eigenvalues, and so-called resonances. We prove that 1) the spectrum of $H$ at high energy has multiplicity two, 2) the asymptotics of the periodic, antiperiodic eigenvalues and of the resonances are determined at high energy, 3) for some specific $p$ the spectrum of $H$ has an infinite number of gaps, 4) the spectrum of $H$ has small spectral band (near the beginner of the spectrum) with multiplicity 4 and its asymptotics are determined as $p\to 0, q=0$.

Magnetic Schrödinger operators on armchair nanotubes

We consider the Schrödinger operator with a periodic potential on a quasi 1D continuous periodic model of armchair nanotubes in $\R^3$ in a uniform magnetic field (with amplitude $B\in \R$), which is parallel to the axis of the nanotube. The spectrum of this operator consists of an absolutely continuous part (spectral bands separated by gaps) plus an infinite number of eigenvalues with infinite multiplicity. We describe all eigenfunctions with the same eigenvalue including compactly supported. We describe the spectrum as a function of $B$. For some specific potentials we prove an existence of gaps independent on the magnetic field. If $B\ne 0$, then there exists an infinite number of gaps $G_n$ with the length $|G_n|\to\iy$ as $n\to\iy$, and we determine the asymptotics of the gaps at high energy for fixed $B$. Moreover, we determine the asymptotics of the gaps $G_n$ as $B\to 0$ for fixed $n$.

Nanoribbons in external electric fields

We consider the Schrödinger operator on nanoribbons (tight-binding models) in an external electric potentials $V$. The corresponding electric field is perpendicular to the axis of the nanoribbon. If V=0, then the spectrum of the Schrödinger operator consists of two spectral bands and the flat band (i.e., the eigenvalue with infinite multiplicity) between them. If we switch on an weak electric potential $V\to 0$, then we determine the asymptotics of the spectral bands for small fields. In particular, we describe all potentials when the unperturbed eigenvalue remains the flat band and when one becomes the small band of the continuous spectrum.

Estimates for periodic Zakharov-Shabat operators

We consider the periodic Zakharov-Shabat operators on the real line. The spectrum of this operator consists of intervals separated by gaps with the lengths $|g_n|\ge 0, n\in \Z$. Let $\m_n^\pm$ be the corresponding effective masses and let $h_n$ be heights of the corresponding slits in the quasimomentum domain. We obtain a priori estimates of sequences $g=(|g_n|)_{n\in \Z},\m^\pm=(\m_n^\pm)_{n\in \Z}, h=(h_n)_{n\in \Z}$ in terms of weighted $\ell^p-$norms at $p\ge 1$. The proof is based on the analysis of the quasimomentum as the conformal mapping.

Marchenko-Ostrovski mappings for periodic Jacobi matrices

We consider the 1D periodic Jacobi matrices. The spectrum of this operator is purely absolutely continuous and consists of intervals separated by gaps. We solve the inverse problem (including characterization) in terms of vertical slits on the quasimomentum domain . Furthermore, we obtain a priori two-sided estimates for vertical slits in terms of Jacoby matrices.

Schrödinger operators on armchair nanotubes. II

We consider the Schrödinger operator with a periodic potential on quasi-1D models of armchair single-wall nanotubes. The spectrum of this operator consists of an absolutely continuous part (intervals separated by gaps) plus an infinite number of eigenvalues with infinite multiplicity. We describe the absolutely continuous spectrum of the Schrödinger operator: 1) the multiplicity, 2) endpoints of the gaps, they are given by periodic or antiperiodic eigenvalues or resonances (branch points of the Lyapunov function), 3) resonance gaps, where the Lyapunov function is non-real. We determine the asymptotics of the gaps at high energy.

Schrödinger operators on armchair nanotubes. I

We consider the Schrödinger operator with a periodic potential on quasi-1D models of armchair single-wall nanotubes. The spectrum of this operator consists of an absolutely continuous part (intervals separated by gaps) plus an infinite number of eigenvalues with infinite multiplicity. We describe all eigenfunctions with the same eigenvalue. We define a Lyapunov function, which is analytic on some Riemann surface. On each sheet, the Lyapunov function has the same properties as in the scalar case, but it has branch points, which we call resonances. In example we show the existence of real and complex resonances for some specific potentials.

Effective masses for zigzag nanotubes in magnetic fields

We consider the Schrödinger operator with a periodic potential on quasi-1D models of zigzag single-wall carbon nanotubes in magnetic field. The spectrum of this operator consists of an absolutely continuous part (intervals separated by gaps) plus an infinite number of eigenvalues with infinite multiplicity. We obtain identities and a priori estimates in terms of effective masses and gap lengths.

Lyapunov functions for periodic matrix-valued Jacobi operators

We consider periodic matrix-valued Jacobi operators. The spectrum of this operator is absolutely continuous and consists of intervals separated by gaps. We define the Lyapunov function, which is analytic on an associated Riemann surface. On each sheet the Lyapunov function has the standard properties of the Lyapunov function for the scalar case. We show that this function has (real or complex) branch points, which we call resonances. We prove that there exist two types of gaps: i) stable gaps, i.e., the endpoints are periodic and anti-periodic eigenvalues, ii) unstable (resonance) gaps, i.e., the endpoints are resonances (real branch points). We show that some spectral data determine the spectrum (counting multiplicity) of the Jacobi operator.

A priori estimates for the Hill and Dirac operators

Consider the Hill operator $Ty=-y''+q'(t)y$ in $L^2(\R)$, where $q\in L^2(0,1)$ is a 1-periodic real potential. The spectrum of $T$ is is absolutely continuous and consists of bands separated by gaps $\g_n,n\ge 1$ with length $|\g_n|\ge 0$. We obtain a priori estimates of the gap lengths, effective masses, action variables for the KDV. For example, if $\m_n^\pm$ are the effective masses associated with the gap $\g_n=(ł_n^-,ł_n^+)$, then $|\m_n^-+\m_n^+|\le C|\g_n|^2n^{-4}$ for some constant $C=C(q)$ and any $n\ge 1$. In order prove these results we use the analysis of a conformal mapping corresponding to quasimomentum of the Hill operator. That makes possible to reformulate the problems for the differential operator as the problems of the conformal mapping theory. Then the proof is based on the analysis of the conformal mapping and the identities. Moreover, we obtain the similar estimates for the Dirac operator.

Conformal spectral theory for the monodromy matrix

For any $N\ts N$ monodromy matrix we define the Lyapunov function, which is analytic on an associated N-sheeted Riemann surface. On each sheet the Lyapunov function has the standard properties of the Lyapunov function for the Hill operator. The Lyapunov function has (real or complex) branch points, which we call resonances. We determine the asymptotics of the periodic, anti-periodic spectrum and of the resonances at high energy. We show that the endpoints of each gap are periodic (anti-periodic) eigenvalues or resonances (real branch points). Moreover, the following results are obtained: 1) we define the quasimomentum as an analytic function on the Riemann surface of the Lyapunov function; various properties and estimates of the quasimomentum are obtained, 2) we construct the conformal mapping with imaginary part given by the Lyapunov exponent and we obtain various properties of this conformal mapping, which are similar to the case of the Hill operator, 3) we determine various new trace formulae for potentials and the Lyapunov exponent, 4) we obtain a priori estimates of gap lengths in terms of the Dirichlet integral. We apply these results to the Schrödinger operators and to first order periodic systems on the real line with a matrix valued complex self-adjoint periodic potential.

Spectral estimates for matrix-valued periodic Dirac operators

We consider the first order periodic systems perturbed by a $2N\ts 2N$ matrix-valued periodic potential on the real line. The spectrum of this operator is absolutely continuous and consists of intervals separated by gaps. We define the Lyapunov function, which is analytic on an associated N-sheeted Riemann surface. On each sheet the Lyapunov function has the standard properties of the Lyapunov function for the scalar case. The Lyapunov function has branch points, which we call resonances. We prove the existence of real or complex resonances. We determine the asymptotics of the periodic, anti-periodic spectrum and of the resonances at high energy (in terms of the Fourier coefficients of the potential). We show that there exist two types of gaps: i) stable gaps, i.e., the endpoints are periodic and anti-periodic eigenvalues, ii) unstable (resonance) gaps, i.e., the endpoints are resonances (real branch points). Moreover, we determine various new trace formulae for potentials and the Lyapunov exponent.

Inverse spectral analysis for finite matrix-valued Jacobi operators

Consider the Jacobi operators $\cJ$ given by $(\cJ y)_n=a_ny_{n+1}+b_ny_n+a_{n-1}^*y_{n-1}$, $y_n\in \C^m$ (here $y_0=y_{p+1}=0$), where $b_n=b_n^*$ and $a_n:\det a_n\ne 0$ are the sequences of $m\ts m$ matrices, $n=1,..,p$. We study two cases: (i) $a_n=a_n^*>0$; (ii) $a_n$ is a lower triangular matrix with real positive entries on the diagonal (the matrix $\cJ$ is $(2m+1)$-band $mp\ts mp$ matrix with positive entries on the first and the last diagonals). The spectrum of $\cJ$ is a finite sequence of real eigenvalues $ł_1<...<ł_N$, where each eigenvalue $ł_j$ has multiplicity $k_j\le m$. We show that the mapping $(a,b)\mapsto \{(ł_j,k_j)\}_1^N\oplus \{additional spectral data \}$ is 1-to-1 and onto. In both cases (i), \nolinebreak (ii), we give the complete solution of the inverse problem.

The inverse Sturm-Liouville problem with mixed boundary conditions

Consider the operator $H\p=-\p''+q\p=ł\p$, $\p(0)=0$, $\p'(1)+b\p(1)=0$ acting in $L^2(0,1)$, where $q\in L^2(0,1)$ is a real potential. Let $ł_n(q,b)$, $n\ge 0$, be the eigenvalues of $H$ and $\n_n(q,b)$ be the so-called norming constants. We give a complete characterization of all spectral data $(\{ł_n\}_0^\iy;\{\n_n\}_0^\iy)$ that correspond to $(q;b)\in L^2(0,1)\ts\R$. If $b$ is fixed, then we obtain a similar characterization and parameterize the iso-spectral manifolds.
