From the Spectrum to Inflation : An Inverse Formula for the General Slow-Roll Spectrum

We propose a general inverse formula for extracting inflationary parameters from the observed power spectrum of cosmological perturbations. Under the general slow-roll scheme, which helps to probe the properties of inflation in a model independent way, we invert the leading order, single field, power spectrum formula. We also give some physically interesting examples to demonstrate its wide applicability and illuminate its properties.

Inflation model building in moduli space

A self-consistent modular cosmology scenario and its testability in view of future CMB experiments are discussed. Particular attention is drawn to the enhanced symmetric points in moduli space which play crucial roles in our scenario. The running and moreover the running of running for the cosmic perturbation spectrum are also analyzed.

Modular Cosmology, Thermal Inflation, Baryogenesis and Predictions for Particle Accelerators

Modular cosmology is plagued by overproduction of unwanted relics, gravitinos and especially moduli, at relatively low energy scales. Thermal inflation provides a compelling solution to this moduli problem, but invalidates most baryogenesis scenarios. We propose a simple model in which the MSSM plus neutrino mass term $(LH_u)^2$ is supplemented by a minimal flaton sector to drive the thermal inflation, and make two crucial assumptions: the flaton vacuum expectation value generates the $μ$-term of the MSSM and $m_L^2 + m_{H_u}^2 < 0$. The second assumption is particularly interesting in that it violates a well known constraint, implying that there exists a nearby deep non-MSSM vacuum, and provides a clear signature of our model which can be tested at future particle accelerators. We show that our model leads to thermal inflation followed by Affleck-Dine leptogenensis along the $LH_u$ flat direction. A key feature of our leptogenesis scenario is that the $H_uH_d$ flat direction is also induced to temporarily acquire a large value, playing a crucial role in the leptogenesis, as well as dynamically shielding the field configuration from the deep non-MSSM minimum, ensuring that the fields relax into our MSSM vacuum.

Second Order General Slow-Roll Power Spectrum

Recent combined results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) provide a remarkable set of data which requires more accurate and general investigation. Here we derive formulae for the power spectrum P(k) of the density perturbations produced during inflation in the general slow-roll approximation with second order corrections. Also, using the result, we derive the power spectrum in the standard slow-roll picture with previously unknown third order corrections.

Inflation on Moduli Space and Cosmic Perturbations

We show that a moduli space of the form predicted by string theory, lifted by supersymmetry breaking, gives rise to successful inflation for large regions of parameter space without any modification or fine tuning. This natural realization of inflation relies crucially on the complex nature of the moduli fields and the multiple points of enhanced symmetry, which are generic features of moduli space but not usually considered in inflationary model building. Our scenario predicts cosmic perturbations with an almost exactly flat spectrum for a wide range of scales with running on smaller, possibly observable, scales. The running takes the form of either an increasingly steep drop off of the spectrum, or a rise to a bump in the spectrum before an increasingly steep drop off.

Successful Modular Cosmology

We present a modular cosmology scenario where the difficulties encountered in conventional modular cosmology are solved in a self-consistent manner, with definite predictions to be tested by observation. Notably, the difficulty of the dilaton finding its way to a precarious weak coupling minimum is made irrelevant by having eternal modular inflation at the vacuum supersymmetry breaking scale after the dilaton is stabilised. Neither this eternal inflation nor the subsequent non-slow-roll modular inflation destabilise the dilaton from its precarious minimum due to the low energy scale of the inflation and consequent small back reaction on the dilaton potential. The observed flat CMB spectrum is obtained from fluctuations in the angular component of a modulus near a symmetric point, which are hugely magnified by the roll down of the modulus to Planckian values, allowing them to dominate the final curvature perturbation. We also give precise calculations of the spectral index and its running.

The Power Spectrum for a Multi-Component Inflaton to Second-Order Corrections in the Slow-Roll Expansion

We derive the power spectrum $\mathcal P(k)$ of the density perturbations produced during inflation up to second-order corrections in the standard slow-roll approximation for an inflaton with more than one degree of freedom. We also present the spectral index $n$ up to first-order corrections including previously missing terms, and the running ${dn}/{d\ln k}$ to leading order.

The Spectrum of Density Perturbations produced during Inflation to Leading Order in a General Slow-Roll Approximation

The standard calculation of the spectrum of density perturbations produced during inflation assumes (i) |n-1| << 1 and (ii) |dn/dlnk| << |n-1|. Slow-roll predicts and observations require (i), but neither slow-roll nor observations require (ii). In this paper I derive formulae for the spectrum, spectral index, and running of the spectral index, assuming only (i) and not (ii). I give a large class of observationally viable examples in which these general slow-roll formulae are accurate but the standard slow-roll formulae for the spectral index and running are incorrect.

Superheavy Dark Matter from Thermal Inflation

It is quite plausible that the mass of the dark matter particle increases significantly after its freeze-out, due to a scalar field rolling to large values. We describe a realization of this scenario in the context of thermal inflation which naturally gives a cold dark matter particle with the correct cosmological abundance and a mass around $10^{10} {\rm GeV}$, evading the conventional upper bound of $10^5 {\rm GeV}$. We also discuss another realization which could produce a cosmologically interesting abundance of near Planck mass, possibly electromagnetically charged, particles. The detection and observational consequences of superheavy cold dark matter or WIMPZILLAs are briefly examined.

Flattening the Inflaton's Potential with Quantum Corrections II

In a previous paper I showed that a classical scalar potential with $V''/V \sim 1$ can be sufficiently flattened by quantum corrections to give rise to slow-roll inflation. In this paper I give a hybrid inflation implementation of that idea which can naturally produce a spectral index in the observationally viable range even for $V^{1/4} \sim 10^{10}$ to $10^{11}$ GeV. Although any observationally viable spectral index can be obtained, the model does predict a distinctive spectral shape.

More varieties of hybrid inflation

It is pointed out that hybrid inflation can be implemented with the inflaton field rolling away from the origin instead of towards it. This `inverted' hybrid inflation has a spectral index $ n < 1 $, in contrast with ordinary hybrid inflation which has $ n \gtrsim 1 $, so a measured value of $n$ substantially different from 1 would distinguish the two. Other generalisations of hybrid inflation are also considered.

Flattening the Inflaton's Potential with Quantum Corrections

I show that a classical scalar potential with $ V''/V \sim 1 $ can be sufficiently flattened by quantum corrections to give rise to slow-roll inflation. This provides perhaps the simplest way to generate an inflationary potential without fine tuning. The most natural implementation of this idea produces an unviably small spectral index, but, for example, $ n \sim 0.8 $ can be obtained in other implementations.

The spectrum of cosmological perturbations produced by a multi-component inflaton to second order in the slow-roll approximation

We derive general analytic formulae for the power spectrum and spectral index of the curvature perturbation produced during inflation driven by a multi-component inflaton field, up to the second order in the slow-roll approximation. We do not assume any specific properties of the potential or the metric on the scalar field space, except for the slow-roll condition, Einstein gravity, and the absence of any permanent isocurvature modes.

A General Analytic Formula for the Spectral Index of the Density Perturbations produced during Inflation

The standard calculation of the spectrum of density perturbations produced during inflation assumes that there is only one real dynamical degree of freedom during inflation. However, there is no reason to believe that this is actually the case. In this paper we derive general analytic formulae for the spectrum and spectral index of the density perturbations produced during inflation.

Inflation, Supergravity and Superstrings

The positive potential energy required for inflation spontaneously breaks supersymmetry and in general gives any would-be inflaton an effective mass of order the inflationary Hubble parameter thus ruling it out as an inflaton. In this paper I give simple conditions on the superpotential that eliminate some potential sources for this mass, and derive a form for the Kahler potential that eliminates the rest. This reduces the problem of constructing a model of inflation in supergravity to that of constructing one in global supersymmetry with the extra conditions $W=W_φ=ψ=0$ during inflation (where $W$ is the superpotential, the inflaton $\inφ$, and $W_ψ\neq0$). I then point out that Kahler potentials of the required form often occur in superstrings and that the target space duality symmetries of superstrings often contain R-parities which would make $W=W_φ=0$ automatic for $ψ=0$.

Cosmology with a TeV mass GUT Higgs

The most natural way to break the GUT gauge symmetry is with a Higgs field whose vacuum expectation value is of order $10^{16}\,\mbox{GeV}$ but whose mass is of order $10^2$ to $10^3\,\mbox{GeV}$. This can lead to a cosmological history radically different from what is usually assumed to have occurred between the standard inflationary and nucleosynthesis epochs, which may solve the gravitino and Polonyi/moduli problems in a natural way.

Mutated Hybrid Inflation

A new model of inflation is described. An unusual form for the inflationary potential is obtained because the inflaton corresponds to a non-trivial path in the configuration space of the two real scalar fields of the model. The model predicts a spectral index $n = 1 - 3/2N \simeq 0.97$ for the density perturbations and negligible gravitational waves.
