Maximal Regularity for Compressible Two-Fluid System

We investigate a compressible two-fluid Navier-Stokes type system with a single velocity field and algebraic closure for the pressure law. The constitutive relation involves densities of both fluids through an implicit function. We are interested in regular solutions in a $L_p-L_q$ maximal regularity setting. We show that such solutions exists locally in time and, under additional smallness assumptions on the initial data, also globally. Our proof rely on appropriate transformation of the original problem, application of Lagrangian coordinates and maximal regularity estimates for associated linear problem.

Two-phase compressible/incompressible Navier--Stokes system with inflow-outflow boundary conditions

We prove the existence of a weak solution to the compressible Navier--Stokes system with singular pressure that explodes when density achieves its congestion level. This is a quantity whose initial value evolves according to the transport equation. We then prove that the "stiff pressure" limit gives rise to the two-phase compressible/incompressible system with congestion constraint describing the free interface. We prescribe of the velocity at the boundary and the value of density at the inflow part of the boundary of a general bounded $C^2$ domain. There are no restrictions on the size of the boundary conditions.

Compressible Navier--Stokes system with transport noise

We consider the barotropic Navier--Stokes system driven by a physically well-motivated transport noise in both continuity as well as momentum equation. We focus on three different situations: (i) the noise is smooth in time and the equations are understood as in the sense of the classical weak deterministic theory, (ii) the noise is rough in time and we interpret the equations in the framework of rough paths with unbounded rough drivers and (iii) we have a Brownian noise of Stratonovich type and study the existence of martingale solutions. The first situation serves as an approximation for (ii) and (iii), while (ii) and (iii) are motivated by recent results on the incompressible Navier--Stokes system concerning the physical modeling as well as regularization by noise.

Remarks on weak-strong uniqueness for two-fluid model

This paper concerns with the compressible two-fluid model with algebraic pressure closure. We prove a conditional weak-strong uniqueness principle, meaning that a finite energy weak solution, with bounded densities, coincides with the classical solution on the lifespan of the latter emanating from the same initial data.

Low Mach number limit for degenerate Navier-Stokes equations in presence of strong stratification

In this paper, we investigate the low Mach and low Froude numbers limit for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate, density-dependent, viscosity coefficient, in the strong stratification regime. We consider the case of a general pressure law with singular component close to vacuum, and general ill-prepared initial data. We perform our study in the three-dimensional periodic domain. We rigorously justify the convergence to the generalised anelastic approximation, which is used extensively to model atmospheric flows.

Fast non mean-field networks: uniform in time averaging

We study a population of $N$ particles, which evolve according to a diffusion process and interact through a dynamical network. In turn, the evolution of the network is coupled to the particles' positions. In contrast with the mean-field regime, in which each particle interacts with every other particle, i.e. with $O(N)$ particles, we consider the a priori more difficult case of a sparse network; that is, each particle interacts, on average, with $O(1)$ particles. We also assume that the network's dynamics is much faster than the particles' dynamics, with the time-scale of the network described by a parameter $ε>0$. We combine the averaging ($ε\rightarrow 0$) and the many particles ($N \rightarrow \infty$) limits and prove that the evolution of the particles' empirical density is described (after taking both limits) by a non-linear Fokker-Planck equation; we moreover give conditions under which such limits can be taken uniformly in time, hence providing a criterion under which the limiting non-linear Fokker-Planck equation is a good approximation of the original system uniformly in time. The heart of our proof consists of controlling precisely the dependence in $N$ of the averaging estimates.

On weak solutions to the compressible inviscid two-fluid model

In three space dimensions, we consider the compressible inviscid model describing the time evolution of two fluids sharing the same velocity and enjoying the algebraic pressure closure. By employing the technique of convex integration, we prove the existence of infinitely many global-in-time weak solutions for any smooth initial data. We also show that for any piecewise constant initial densities, there exists suitable initial velocity such that the problem admits infinitely many global-in-time weak solutions that conserve the total energy. The structure of the two-fluid model is crucial in our analysis. Adaptations of the main results to other two-fluid models, like the liquid-gas flow, are available. Local-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions will also be shown.

On the isothermal compressible multi-component mixture flow: the local existence and maximal $L_p-L_q$ regularity of solutions

We consider the initial-boundary value problem for the system of equations describing the flow of compressible isothermal mixture of arbitrary large number of components. The system consists of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and a subsystem of diffusion equations for the species. The subsystems are coupled by the form of the pressure and the strong cross-diffusion effects in the diffusion fluxes of the species. Assuming the existence of solutions to the symmetrized and linearized equations, proven in [35], we derive the estimates for the nonlinear equations and prove the local-in-time existence and maximal $L_p-L_q$ regularity of solutions.

On the maximal $L_p$-$L_q$ regularity of solutions to a general linear parabolic system

We show the existence of solution in the maximal $L_p-L_q$ regularity framework to a class of symmetric parabolic problems on a uniformly $C^2$ domain in ${\mathcal R}$. Our approach consist in showing ${\mathcal R}$ - boundedness of families of solution operators to corresponding resolvent problems first in the whole space, then in half-space, perturbed half-space and finally, using localization arguments, on the domain. Assuming additionally boudedness of the domain we also show exponential decay of the solution. In particular, our approach does not require assuming a priori the uniform Lopatinskii - Shapiro condition.

On strong dynamics of compressible two-component mixture flow

We investigate a system describing the flow of a compressible two-component mixture. The system is composed of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with non-symmetric reaction-diffusion equations describing the evolution of fractional masses. We show the local existence and, under certain smallness assumptions, also the global existence of unique strong solutions in $L_p-L_q$ framework. Our approach is based on so called entropic variables which enable to rewrite the system in a symmetric form. Then, applying Lagrangian coordinates, we show the local existence of solutions applying the $L_p$-$L_q$ maximal regularity estimate. Next, applying exponential decay estimate we show that the solution exists globally in time provided the initial data is sufficiently close to some constants. The nonlinear estimates impose restrictions $2<p<\infty, \ 3<q<\infty$. However, for the purpose of generality we show the linear estimates for wider range of $p$ and $q$.

Large time behavior for a compressible two-fluid model with algebraic pressure closure and large initial data

In this paper, we consider a compressible two-fluid system with a common velocity field and algebraic pressure closure in dimension one. Existence, uniqueness and stability of global weak solutions to this system are obtained with arbitrarily large initial data. Making use of the uniform-in-time bounds for the densities from above and below, exponential decay of weak solution to the unique steady state is obtained without any smallness restriction to the size of the initial data. In particular, our results show that degeneration to single-fluid motion will not occur as long as in the initial distribution both components are present at every point.

Finite-energy solutions for compressible two-fluid Stokes system

We prove existence of global in time weak solutions to a compressible two-fluid Stokes system with a single velocity field and algebraic closure for the pressure law. The constitutive relation involves densities of both fluids through an implicit function. The system appears to be outside the class of problems that can be treated using the classical Lions-Feireisl approach. Adapting the novel compactness tool developed by the first author and P.-E. Jabin in the mono-fluid compressible Navier-Stokes setting, we first prove the weak sequential stability of solutions. Next, we construct weak solutions via unconventional approximation using the Lagrangian formulation, truncations and stability result of trajectories for rough velocity fields.

Singular Cucker-Smale Dynamics

The existing state of the art for singular models of flocking is overviewed, starting from microscopic model of Cucker and Smale with singular communication weight, through its mesoscopic mean-filed limit, up to the corresponding macroscopic regime. For the microscopic Cucker-Smale (CS) model, the collision-avoidance phenomenon is discussed, also in the presence of bonding forces and the decentralized control. For the kinetic mean-field model, the existence of global-in-time measure-valued solutions, with a special emphasis on a weak atomic uniqueness of solutions is sketched. Ultimately, for the macroscopic singular model, the summary of the existence results for the Euler-type alignment system is provided, including existence of strong solutions on one-dimensional torus, and the extension of this result to higher dimensions upon restriction on the smallness of initial data. Additionally, the pressureless Navier-Stokes-type system corresponding to particular choice of alignment kernel is presented, and compared - analytically and numerically - to the porous medium equation.

On long-time asymptotics for viscous hydrodynamic models of collective behavior with damping and nonlocal interactions

Hydrodynamic systems arising in swarming modelling include nonlocal forces in the form of attractive-repulsive potentials as well as pressure terms modelling strong local repulsion. We focus on the case where there is a balance between nonlocal attraction and local pressure in presence of confinement in the whole space. Under suitable assumptions on the potentials and the pressure functions, we show the global existence of weak solutions for the hydrodynamic model with viscosity and linear damping. By introducing linear damping in the system, we ensure the existence and uniqueness of stationary solutions with compactly supported density, fixed mass and center of mass. The associated velocity field is zero in the support of the density. Moreover, we show that global weak solutions converge for large times to the set of these stationary solutions in a suitable sense. In particular cases, we can identify the limiting density uniquely as the global minimizer of the free energy with the right mass and center of mass.

Finite Volume approximations of the Euler system with variable congestion

We are interested in the numerical simulations of the Euler system with variable congestion encoded by a singular pressure. This model describes for instance the macroscopic motion of a crowd with individual congestion preferences. We propose an asymptotic preserving (AP) scheme based on a conservative formulation of the system in terms of density, momentum and density fraction. A second order accuracy version of the scheme is also presented. We validate the scheme on one-dimensional test-cases and extended here to higher order accuracy. We finally carry out two dimensional numerical simulations and show that the model exhibit typical crowd dynamics.
