Modular Galois covers associated to symplectic resolutions of singularities

Let Y be a normal projective variety and p a morphism from X to Y, which is a projective holomorphic symplectic resolution. Namikawa proved that the Kuranishi deformation spaces Def(X) and Def(Y) are both smooth, of the same dimension, and p induces a finite branched cover f from Def(X) to Def(Y). We prove that f is Galois. We proceed to calculate the Galois group G, when X is simply connected, and its holomorphic symplectic structure is unique, up to a scalar factor. The singularity of Y is generically of ADE-type, along every codimension 2 irreducible component B of the singular locus, by Namikawa's work. The modular Galois group G is the product of Weyl groups of finite type, indexed by such irreducible components B. Each Weyl group factor W_B is that of a Dynkin diagram, obtained as a quotient of the Dynkin diagram of the singularity-type of B, by a group of Dynkin diagram automorphisms. Finally we consider generalizations of the above set-up, where Y is affine symplectic, or a Calabi-Yau threefold with a curve of ADE-singularities. We prove that the morphism f from Def(X) to Def(Y) is a Galois cover of its image. This explains the analogy between the above results and related work of Nakajima, on quiver varieties, and of Szendroi on enhanced gauge symmetries for Calabi-Yau threefolds.

Integral constraints on the monodromy group of the hyperkahler resolution of a symmetric product of a K3 surface

Let M be a 2n-dimensional Kahler manifold deformation equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of length n subschemes of a K3 surface S. Let Mon be the group of automorphisms of the cohomology ring of M, which are induced by monodromy operators. The second integral cohomology of M is endowed with the Beauville-Bogomolov bilinear form. We prove that the restriction homomorphism from Mon to the isometry group O[H^2(M)] is injective, for infinitely many n, and its kernel has order at most 2, in the remaining cases. For all n, the image of Mon in O[H^2(M)] is the subgroup generated by reflections with respect to +2 and -2 classes. As a consequence, we get counter examples to a version of the weight 2 Torelli question, when n-1 is not a prime power.

Integral generators for the cohomology ring of moduli spaces of sheaves over Poisson surfaces

Let M be a smooth and compact moduli space of stable coherent sheaves on a projective surface S with an effective (or trivial) anti-canonical line bundle. We find generators for the cohomology ring of M, with integral coefficients. When S is simply connected and a universal sheaf E exists over SxM, then its class [E] admits a Kunneth decomposition as a class in the tensor product of the topological K-rings K(S) and K(M). The generators are the Chern classes of the Kunneth factors of [E] in K(M). The general case is similar

On the monodromy of moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces

Let S be a K3 surface and Aut D(S) the group of auto-equivalences of the derived category of S. We construct a natural representation of Aut D(S) on the cohomology of all moduli spaces of stable sheaves (with primitive Mukai vectors) on S. The main result of this paper is the precise relation of this action with the monodromy of the Hilbert schemes S^[n] of points on the surface. A formula is provided for the monodromy representation, in terms of the Chern character of the universal sheaf. Isometries of the second cohomology of S^[n] are lifted, via this formula, to monodromy operators of the whole cohomology ring of S^[n].

On the monodromy of moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces II

Let S be a K3 surface. In part I of this paper, we constructed a representation of the group Aut D(S), of auto-equivalences of the derived category of S. We interpreted this infinite dimensional representation, as the natural action of Aut D(S) on the cohomology of all moduli spaces of stable sheaves (with primitive Mukai vectors) on S. The main result, of part I, is the precise relation of this action with the monodromy of the Hilbert schemes S^[n] of points on the surface. The proof of the above result was reduced, in part I, to the case of two monodromy operators of S^[n], associated with choices of line bundles on the surface S, of degree 2n-4 and 2n respectively. When n=1, the first sequence of monodromy operators specializes to the reflection by a -2 curve. The n=1 case of the second sequence is related to the Galois involution, of a double cover of the projective plane, branched along a sextic. We complete the proof by treating these two sequences of examples.

Elliptic Sklyanin integrable systems for arbitrary reductive groups

We present the analogue, for an arbitrary complex reductive group G, of the elliptic integrable systems of Sklyanin. The Sklyanin integrable systems were originally constructed on symplectic leaves, of a quadratic Poisson structure, on a loop group of type A. The phase space, of our integrable systems, is a group-like analogue of the Hitchin system over an elliptic curve E. We consider the moduli space of pairs (P,f), where P is a principal G-bundle on E, and f is a meromorphic section of the adjoint group bundle. We show: 1) The moduli space admits an algebraic Poisson structure. It is related to the poisson structures on loop groupoids, constructed by Etingof and Varchenko, using Felder's elliptic solutions of the Classical Dynamical Yang-Baxter Equation. 2) The symplectic leaves are finite dimensional. A symplectic leaf is determined by labeling, finitely many points of E, each by a dominant co-character of the maximal torus of G. 3) Each leaf is an algebraically completely integrable system.

The Moduli of Flat PU(p,p)-Structures with Large Toledo Invariants

For a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g > 1$, $\Hom(π_1(X), PU(p,q))/PU(p,q)$ is the moduli space of flat $PU(p,q)$-connections on $X$. There are two invariants, the Chern class $c$ and the Toledo invariant $τ$ associated with each element in the moduli. The Toledo invariant is bounded in the range $-2min(p,q)(g-1) \le τ\le 2min(p,q)(g-1)$. This paper shows that the component, associated with a fixed $τ> 2(max(p,q)-1)(g-1)$ (resp. $τ< -2(max(p,q)-1)(g-1)$) and a fixed Chern class $c$, is connected (The restriction on $τ$ implies $p=q$).

Generators of the cohomology ring of moduli spaces of sheaves on symplectic surfaces

Let M be a moduli space of stable sheaves on a K3 or Abelian surface S. We express the class of the diagonal in the cartesian square of M in terms of the Chern classes of a universal sheaf. Consequently, we obtain generators of the cohomology ring of M. When S is a K3 and M is the Hilbert scheme of length n subschemes, this set of generators is sufficiently small in the sense that there aren't any relations among them in the stable cohomology ring. When S is the cotangent bundle of a Riemann surface, we recover the result of T. Hausel and M. Thaddeus: The cohomology ring of the moduli spaces of Higgs bundles is generated by the universal classes.

Brill-Noether duality for moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces

Components of the Moduli space of sheaves on a K3 surface are parametrized by a lattice; the (algebraic) Mukai lattice. Isometries of the Mukai lattice often lift to symplectic birational isomorphisms of the collection of components. An example of such a birational isomorphism is the Abel-Jacobi map relating the Hilbert scheme of g points on a K3 of degree 2g-2 to an integrable system: the union of Jacobians of hyperplane sections (curves) of genus g. The main results are: 1) We construct a stratified version of a Mukai elementary transformation modeled after dual pairs of Springer resolutions of nilpotent orbits. It applies to a holomorphic-symplectic variety M with a stratification where the first stratum is a P^n bundle, but lower strata are Grassmannian bundles. The resulting (transformed) symplectic variety W admits a stratification by the dual Grassmannian bundles. 2) The group of reflections of the Mukai lattice, which act trivially on the second cohomology of the K3 surface, acts on moduli spaces of sheaves (with ``minimal'' first Chern class) as birational stratified elementary transformations. 3) We derive a Picard-Lefschetz type formula identifying the isomorphism of cohomology rings of a holomorphic-symplectic variety M and its stratified transform W as the cup product with an algebraic correspondence.

Spectral curves, algebraically completely integrable Hamiltonian systems, and moduli of bundles

This is the expanded text of a series of CIME lectures. We present an algebro-geometric approach to integrable systems, starting with those which can be described in terms of spectral curves. The prototype is Hitchin's system on the cotangent bundle of the moduli space of stable bundles on a curve. A variant involving meromorphic Higgs bundles specializes to many familiar systems of mathematics and mechanics, such as the geodesic flow on an ellipsoid and the elliptic solitons. We then describe some systems in which the spectral curve is replaced by various higher dimensional analogues: a spectral cover of an arbitrary variety, a Lagrangian subvariety in an algebraically symplectic manifold, or a Calabi-Yau manifold. One peculiar feature of the CY system is that it is integrable analytically, but not algebraically: the Liouville tori (on which the system is linearized) are the intermediate Jacobians of a family of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Most of the results concerning these three types of non-curve-based systems are quite recent. Some of them, as well as the compatibility between spectral systems and the KP hierarchy, are new, while other parts of the story are scattered through several recent preprints. As best we could, we tried to maintain the survey style of this article, starting with some basic notions in the field and building gradually to the recent developments.

Cubics, Integrable Systems, and Calabi-Yau Threefolds

In this work we construct an analytically completely integrable Hamiltonian system which is canonically associated to any family of Calabi-Yau threefolds. The base of this system is a moduli space of gauged Calabi-Yaus in the family, and the fibers are Deligne cohomology groups (or intermediate Jacobians) of the threefolds. This system has several interesting properties: the multivalued sections obtained as Abel-Jacobi images, or ``normal functions'', of a family of curves on the generic variety of the family, are always Lagrangian; the natural affine coordinates on the base, which are used in the mirror correspondence, arise as action variables for the integrable system; and the Yukawa cubic, expressing the infinitesimal variation of Hodge structure in the family, is essentially equivalent to the symplectic structure on the total space.
