Quantization of constrained systems as Dirac first class versus second class: a toy model and its implications

A toy model (suggested by Klauder) is analyzed from the perspective of First Class and Second Class Dirac constrained systems. The comparison is made by turning a First Class into a Second Class system with the introduction of suitable auxiliary conditions. The links between Dirac's system of constraints, the Faddeev-Popov canonical functional integral method and the Maskawa-Nakajima procedure to reduced phase space are explicitly illustrated. The model reveals stark contrasts and physically distinguishable results between First and Second class routes. Physically relevant systems such as the relativistic point particle and electrodynamics are briefly recapped. Besides its pedagogical value, the article also advocates the route of rendering First Class into Second Class systems prior to quantization. Second Class systems lead to well-defined reduced phase space and physical observables; absence of inconsistencies in the closure of quantum constraint algebra; and consistent promotion of fundamental Dirac brackets to quantum commutators. As First Class systems can be turned into well-defined Second Class ones, this has implications for the soundness of "Dirac quantization" of First Class constrained systems by simple promotion of Poisson, rather than Dirac brackets, to commutators without proceeding through Second Class procedures.

Intrinsic time gravity, heat kernel regularization, and emergence of Einstein's theory

The Hamiltonian of Intrinsic Time Gravity is elucidated. The theory describes Schrodinger evolution of our universe with respect to the fractional change of the total spatial volume. Gravitational interactions are introduced by extending Klauder's momentric variable with similarity transformations, and explicit spatial diffeomorphism invariance is enforced via similarity transformation with exponentials of spatial integrals. In analogy with Yang-Mills theory, a Cotton-York term is obtained from the Chern-Simons functional of the affine connection. The essential difference is the fundamental variable for geometrodynamics is the metric rather than a gauge connection; in the case of Yang-Mills, there is also no analog of the integral of the spatial Ricci scalar curvature. Heat kernel regularization is employed to isolate the divergences of coincidence limits; apart from an additional Cotton-York term, a prescription in which Einstein's Ricci scalar potential emerges naturally from the positive-definite self-adjoint Hamiltonian of the theory is demonstrated.

Gravitational waves in Intrinsic Time Geometrodynamics

Gravitational waves are investigated in Intrinsic Time Geometrodynamics. This theory has a non-vanishing physical Hamiltonian generating intrinsic time development in our expanding universe, and four-covariance is explicitly broken by higher spatial curvature terms. Linearization of Hamilton's equations about the de Sitter solution produces transverse traceless excitations, with the physics of gravitational waves in Einstein's General Relativity recovered in the low curvature low frequency limit. A noteworthy feature of the theory is that gravitational waves always carry positive energy density, even for compact spatial slicings without any energy contribution from boundary Hamiltonian. This study of gravitational waves in compact $k= +1$ cosmological de Sitter spacetime is in contradistinction to, and complements, previous $k= -1$ investigations of Hawking, Hertog and Turok and other more familiar $k=0$ works. In addition, possible non-four-covariant Horava gravity contributions are considered (hence the use of canonical Hamiltonian, rather than Lagrangian, methods). Recent explicit $S^3$ transverse-traceless mode spectrum of Lindblom, Taylor and Zhang are also employed to complete the discussion.

Cosmic time and reduced phase space of General Relativity

In an ever-expanding spatially closed universe, the fractional change of the volume is the preeminent intrinsic time interval to describe evolution in General Relativity. The expansion of the universe serves as a subsidiary condition which transforms Einstein's theory from a first class to a second class constrained system when the physical degrees of freedom (d.o.f.) are identified with transverse traceless excitations. The super-Hamiltonian constraint is solved by eliminating the trace of the momentum in terms of the other variables, and spatial diffeomorphism symmetry is tackled explicitly by imposing transversality. The theorems of Maskawa-Nishijima appositely relate the reduced phase space to the physical variables in canonical functional integral and Dirac's criterion for second class constraints to nonvanishing Faddeev-Popov determinants in the phase space measures. A reduced physical Hamiltonian for intrinsic time evolution of the two physical d.o.f. emerges. Freed from the first class Dirac algebra, deformation of the Hamiltonian constraint is permitted, and natural extension of the Hamiltonian while maintaining spatial diffeomorphism invariance leads to a theory with Cotton-York term as the ultraviolet completion of Einstein's theory.

Intrinsic Time Quantum Geometrodynamics

Quantum Geometrodynamics with intrinsic time development and momentric variables is presented. An underlying SU(3) group structure at each spatial point regulates the theory. The intrinsic time behavior of the theory is analyzed, together with its ground state and primordial quantum fluctuations. Cotton-York potential dominates at early times when the universe was small; the ground state naturally resolves Penrose's Weyl Curvature Hypothesis, and thermodynamic and gravitational `arrows of time' point in the same direction. Ricci scalar potential corresponding to Einstein's General Relativity emerges as a zero-point energy contribution. A new set of fundamental commutation relations without Planck's constant emerges from the unification of Gravitation and Quantum Mechanics.

Translational affine coherent states as exact solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation

The Quantum Wheeler-DeWitt operator can be derived from an affine commutation relation via the affine group representation formalism for gravity, wherein a family of gauge-diffeomorphism invariant affine coherent states are constructed from a fiducial state. In this article, the role of the fiducial state is played by a regularized Gaussian peaked on densitized triad configurations corresponding to 3-metrics of constant spatial scalar curvature. The affine group manifold consists of points in the upper half plane, wherein each point is labeled by two local gravitational degrees of freedom from the Yamabe construction. From this viewpoint, here we show that the translational subgroup of affine coherent states constitute a set of exact solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. The affine translational parameter $b$ admits a physical interpretation analogous to a continuous plane wave energy spectrum, where the curvature constant $k$ plays the role of the energy. This result shows that the affine translational subgroup generates transformations in the curvature constant $k$ from the Yamabe problem, while $k$ is inert under the kinematic symmetries of gravity.

Reformulation of the Hamiltonian constraint of four dimensional gravity for arbitrary values of the Immirzi parameter via the affine group formalism

One of the virtues of the Ashtekar variables is the simplification of the initial value constraints for gravity. In the case of self-dual variables this entails a complexification of the phase space which comes at the expense of having to implement reality conditions in the Lorentzian signature case. A reformulation of the theory in terms of real variables eliminates this difficulty, albeit at the expense of having to deal with a more complicated Hamiltonian constraint. The set of available gravitational theories classically equivalent to Einstein's is parametrized by a parameter $β$, known as the Immirzi parameter. We rephrase the Hamiltonian constraint into the form of an affine Lie algebra for arbitrary $β$, and perform a quantization.

A proposal for a reduced phase space for time symmetric, Lorentzian gravity

In this paper we perform a full gauge-fixing of the phase space of four dimensional General Relativity (GR) of Lorentzian signature for the time symmetric case, using the CDJ variables. In particular, the Gauss' law constraint in the chosen gauge meets the conditions of the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem for first order, quasilinear PDEs. This implies the existence of a unique analytic solution to the initial value constraints problem in some region of 3-space, featuring four free functions per spacetime point. This result constitutes a step toward addressal of the reduced phase space problem of GR.

Instanton representation of Plebanski gravity. Euclidean signature minisuperspace solution

Using the action for the instanton representation of Plebanski gravity (IRPG), we construct minisuperspace solutions restricted to diagonal variables. We have treated the Euclidean signature case with zero cosmological constant, depicting a gravitational analogy to free particle motion. This paper provides a testing ground for the IRPG for a simple case, which will be extended to the full theory in future work.

CDJ formulation from the instanton representation of Plebanski gravity

We show that a certain action which gives rise to the pure spin connection formulation of gravity by CDJ can be consistently derived from the action for the instanton representation of Plebanski gravity. This is an illustrative example of when certain symmetries of the basic fields commute with the symmetries of the equations of motion.

Nonlinear gravitons from the initial value constraints of GR in Ashtekar variables

In this paper we provide a possible realization of Penrose's idea of nonlinear gravitons by constructing a solution to the initial value constraints in Ashtekar variables. The solution inputs are a spatial SU(2) connection and two free functions of position, and can be constructed as a formal operatorial expansion in powers of the cosmological constant about spacetimes of Petrov Type O. We first present the linear case, and then provide a simple nonlinear example to first order using a spatially homogeneous connection.

General covariance for a proposal for 4-D gravity

In this paper we extend some previous results for a new proposal for gravity and place them into overall context. The basic fields of this proposal provide an off-shell realization of symmetry with respect to SO(3,C) gauge transformations and general coordinate transformations of 4-dimensional spacetime.

4-Dimensional General Relativity from the instrinsic spatial geometry of SO(3) Yang--Mills theory

In this paper we derive 4-dimensional General Relativity from three dimensions, using the intrinsic spatial geometry inherent in Yang--Mills theory which has been exposed by previous authors as well as as some properties of the Ashtekar variables. We provide various interesting relations, including the fact that General Relativity can be written as a Yang--Mills theory where the antiself-dual Weyl curvature replaces the Yang--Mills coupling constant. We have generalized the results of some previous authors, covering Einsteins spaces, to include more general spacetime geometries.

Instanton representation of Plebanski gravity. Consistency of the initital value constraints under time evolution

The instanton representation of Plebanski gravity provides as equations of motion a Hodge self-duality condition and a set of `generalized' Maxwell's equations, subject to gravitational degrees of freedom encoded in the initial value constraints of general relativity. The main result of the present paper will be to prove that this constraint surface is preserved under time evolution. We carry this out not using the usual Dirac procedure, but rather the Lagrangian equations of motion themsleves. Finally, we provide a comparison with the Ashtekar formulation to place these results into overall context.

Instanton representation of Plebanski gravity: Application to the Schwarzchild metric

In this paper we apply the instanton representation method to the construction of spherically symmetric blackhole general relativity solutions. The instanton representation implies the existence of additional Type D solutions which are axially symmetric. We explicitly construct these solutions, which are fully consistent with Birkhoff's theorem.
