Differentiating Majorana from Andreev Bound States in a Superconducting Circuit

We investigate the low-energy theory of a one-dimensional finite capacitance topological Josephson junction. Charge fluctuations across the junction couple to resonant microwave fields and can be used to probe microscopic excitations such as Majorana and Andreev bound states. This marriage between localized microscopic degrees of freedom and macroscopic dynamics of the superconducting phase, leads to unique spectroscopic patterns which allow us to reveal the presence of Majorana fermions among the low-lying excitations.

Dynamically Induced Topology and Quantum Monodromies in a Proximity Quenched Gapless Wire

We study the quench dynamics of a topologically trivial one-dimensional gapless wire following its sudden coupling to topological bound states. We find that as the bound states leak into and propagate through the wire, signatures of their topological nature survive and remain measurable over a long lifetime. Thus, the quench dynamically induces topological properties in the gapless wire. Specifically, we study a gapless wire coupled to fractionally charged solitons or Majorana fermions and characterize the dynamically induced topology in the wire, in the presence of disorder and short-range interactions, by analytical and numerical calculations of the dynamics of fractional charge, fermion parity, entanglement entropy, and fractional exchange statistics. In a dual effective description, this phenomenon is described by correlators of boundary changing operators, which, remarkably, generate topologically non-trivial monodromies in the gapless wire, both for abelian and non-abelian quantum statistics of the bound states.

Magnetic-Related States and Order Parameter Induced in a Conventional Superconductor by Nonmagnetic Chiral Molecules

Hybrid ferromagnetic/superconducting systems are well known for hosting intriguing phenomena such as emergent triplet superconductivity at their interfaces and the appearance of in-gap, spin polarized Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states bound to magnetic impurities on a superconducting surface. In this work we demonstrate that similar phenomena can be induced on a surface of a conventional superconductor by chemisorbing non-magnetic chiral molecules. Conductance spectra measured on NbSe2 flakes over which chiral alpha helix polyalanine molecules were adsorbed, exhibit, in some cases, in-gap states nearly symmetrically positioned around zero bias that shift with magnetic field, akin to YSR states, as corroborated by theoretical simulations. Other samples show evidence for a collective phenomenon of hybridized YSR-like states giving rise to unconventional, possibly triplet superconductivity, manifested in the conductance spectra by the appearance of a zero bias conductance that diminishes, but does not split, with magnetic field. The transition between these two scenarios appears to be governed by the density of adsorbed molecules.

How vortex bound states affect the Hall conductivity of a chiral $p\pm i p$ superconductor

The physics of a planar chiral $p\pm i p$ superconductor is studied for various vortex configurations. The occurrence of vortex quasi-particle bound states is exposed together with their ensuing collective properties, such as sub-gap bands induced by inter-vortex tunneling. A general method to diagonalize the Hamiltonian of a superconductor in the presence of a vortex lattice is developed, that employs only smooth gauge transformations. It renders the Hamiltonian to be periodic (thus allowing the use of a Bloch theorem) and enables the treatment of systems with vortices of finite radii. The pertinent anomalous charge response $c_{xy}$ is calculated (using the Streda formula), and reveals that it contains a quantized contribution. This is attributed to the response to the nucleation of vortices, from which we deduce the system's quantum phase.

Protected ground states in short chains of coupled spins in circuit quantum electrodynamics

The two degenerate ground states of the anisotropic Heisenberg (XY) spin model of a chain of qubits (pseudo-spins) can encode quantum information, but their degree of protection against local perturbations is known to be only partial. We examine the properties of the system in the presence of non-local spin-spin interactions, possibly emerging from the quantum electrodynamics of the device. We find a phase distinct from the XY phase admitting two ground states which are highly protected against all local field perturbations, persisting across a range of parameters. In the context of the XY chain we discuss how the coupling between two ground states can be used to observe signatures of topological edge states in a small controlled chain of superconducting transmon qubits.

Non-Abelian fermion parity interferometry of Majorana bound states in a Fermi sea

We study the quantum dynamics of Majorana and regular fermion bound states coupled to a quasi-one-dimensional metallic lead. The dynamics following the quench in the coupling to the lead exhibits a series of dynamical revivals as the bound state propagates in the lead and reflects from the boundaries. We show that the nature of revivals for a single Majorana bound state depends uniquely on the presence of a resonant level in the lead. When two spatially separated Majorana modes are coupled to the lead, the revivals depend only on the phase difference between their host superconductors. Remarkably, the quench in this case effectively performs a fermion-parity interferometry between Majorana bound states, revealing their unique non-Abelian braiding. Using both analytical and numerical techniques, we find the pattern of fermion parity transfers following the quench, study its evolution in the presence of disorder and interactions, and thus, ascertain the fate of Majorana bound states in a Fermi sea.

Signatures of the topological spin of Josephson vortices in topological superconductors

We consider a modified setup for measuring the Aharonov-Casher phase which consists of a Josephson vortex trapped in an annular topological superconducting junction. The junction encloses both electric charge and magnetic flux. We discover a deviation from the Aharonov-Casher prediction whose origin we identify in an additive universal topological phase that remarkably depends only on the parity of the number of vortices enclosed by the junction. We show that this phase is $\pm 2π$ times the topological spin of the Josephson vortex and is proportional to the Chern number. The presence of this phase can be measured through its effect on the junction's voltage characteristics, thus revealing the topological properties of the Josephson vortex and the superconducting state.

Fermion parity measurement and control in Majorana circuit quantum electrodynamics

We investigate the quantum electrodynamics of a device based on a topological superconducting circuit embedded in a microwave resonator. The device stores its quantum information in coherent superpositions of fermion parity states originating from Majorana fermion hybridization. This generates a highly isolated qubit whose coherence time could be greatly enhanced. We extend the conventional semiclassical method and obtain analytical derivations for strong transmon-photon coupling. Using this formalism, we develop protocols to initialize, control, and measure the parity states. We show that, remarkably, the parity eigenvalue can be detected via dispersive shifts of the optical cavity in the strong-coupling regime and its state can be coherently manipulated via a second-order sideband transition.

Effective theory of vortices in two-dimensional spinless chiral $p$-wave superfluids

We propose a $\mathbb{U}(1) \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ effective gauge theory for vortices in a $p_x+ip_y$ superfluid in two dimensions. The combined gauge transformation binds $\mathbb{U}(1)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ defects so that the total transformation remains single-valued and manifestly preserves the the particle-hole symmetry of the action. The $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field introduces a complete Chern-Simons term in addition to a partial one associated with the $\mathbb{U}(1)$ gauge field. The theory reproduces the known physics of vortex dynamics such as a Magnus force proportional to the superfluid density. More importantly, it predicts a universal Abelian phase, $\exp(iπ/8)$, upon the exchange of two vortices. This phase is modified by non-universal corrections due to the partial Chern-Simon term, which are nevertheless screened in a charged superfluid at distances that are larger than the penetration depth.

Tunability of microwave transitions as a signature of coherent parity mixing effects in the Majorana-Transmon qubit

Coupling Majorana fermion excitations to coherent external fields is an important stage towards their manipulation and detection. We analyse the charge and transmon regimes of a topological nano-wire embedded within a Cooper-Pair-Box, where the superconducting phase difference is coupled to the zero energy parity states that arise from Majorana quasi-particles. We show that at special gate bias points, the photon-qubit coupling can be switched off via quantum interference, and in other points it is exponentially dependent on the control parameter $E_J/E_C$. As well as a probe for topological-superconductor excitations, we propose that this type of device could be used to realise a tunable high coherence four-level system in the superconducting circuits architecture.

The behavior of the entanglement entropy in interacting quasi-1D systems and its consequences for their efficient numerical study

The density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method allows an efficient computation of the properties of interacting 1D quantum systems. Two-dimensional (2D) systems, capable of displaying much richer quantum behavior, generally lie beyond its reach except for very small system sizes. Many of the physical properties of 2D systems carry into the quasi-1D case, for which, unfortunately, the standard 2D DMRG algorithm fares little better. By finding the form of the entanglement entropy in quasi-1D systems, we directly identify the reason for this failure. Using this understanding, we explain why a modified algorithm, capable of cleverly exploiting this behavior of the entanglement entropy, can accurately reach much larger system sizes. We demonstrate the power of this method by accurately finding quantum critical points in frustration induced magnetic transitions, which remain inaccessible using the standard DMRG or the Monte Carlo methods.

Charge Resistance in a Majorana RC circuit

We investigate the dynamical charge response in a "Majorana Coulomb box" realized by two Majorana bound states hosted at the ends of a mesoscopic topological superconductor. One side of the wire is coupled to a normal lead and low frequency gate voltage is applied to the system. There is no dc-current; the system can be considered as an RC quantum circuit. We calculate the effective capacitance and charge relaxation resistance. The latter is in agreement with the Korringa-Shiba formula where, however, the charge relaxation resistance is equal to h/2e^2. This value corresponds to the strong Coulomb blockade limit described by a resonant model formulated by Fu [PRL 104, 056402 (2010)]. We also performed direct calculations using the latter model and defined its parameters by direct comparison with our perturbation theory results.

Thermoelectric probe for neutral edge modes in the fractional quantum Hall regime

The ν=5/2 anti-Pfaffian state and the ν=2/3 state are believed to have an edge composed of counter-propagating charge and neutral modes. This situation allows the generation of a pure thermal bias between two composite edge states across a quantum point contact (QPC) as was experimentally established in Nature 466, 585 (2010). We show that replacing the QPC by a quantum dot provides a natural way for detecting the neutral modes via the finite current generated by the thermoelectric response of the dot. We also show that the degeneracies of the dot spectrum, dictated by the conformal field theories (CFTs) describing these states, induce asymmetries in the thermoelectric current peaks. This in turn provides a direct fingerprint of the corresponding CFT.

Observing Majorana bound states of Josephson vortices in topological superconductors

In recent years there has been an intensive search for Majorana fermion states in condensed matter systems. Predicted to be localized on cores of vortices in certain non-conventional superconductors, their presence is known to render the exchange statistics of bulk vortices non-Abelian. Here we study the equations governing the dynamics of phase solitons (fluxons) in a long Josephson junction in a topological superconductor. We show that the fluxon will bind a localized zero energy Majorana mode and will consequently behave as a non-Abelian anyon. The low mass of the fluxon, as well as its experimentally observed quantum mechanical wave-like nature, will make it a suitable candidate for vortex interferometry experiments demonstrating non-Abelian statistics. We suggest two experiments that may reveal the presence of the zero mode carried by the fluxon. Specific experimental realizations will be discussed as well.

Unpaired Majorana fermions in a layered topological superconductor

We study the conditions for the existence of unpaired Majorana modes at the ends of vortex lines or the side edges of a layered topological superconductor. We show that the problem is mapped to that of a general Majorana chain and extend Kitaev's condition for the existence of its nontrivial phase by providing an additional condition when a supercurrent flows in the chain. Unpaired Majorana bound states may exist in a vortex line that threads the layers if the spin-orbit coupling has certain in-layer components but, interestingly, only if a nonzero supercurrent is maintained along the vortex. We discuss the exchange statistics of vortices in the presence of unpaired Majorana modes and comment on their experimental detection.

Proposed Aharonov-Casher interference measurement of non-Abelian vortices in chiral p-wave superconductors

We propose a two-path vortex interferometry experiment based on the Aharonov-Casher effect for detecting the non-Abelian nature of vortices in a chiral p-wave superconductor. The effect is based on observing vortex interference patterns upon enclosing a finite charge of externally controllable magnitude within the interference path. We predict that when the interfering vortices enclose an odd number of identical vortices in their path, the interference pattern disappears only for non-Abelian vortices. When pairing involves two distinct spin species, we derive the mutual statistics between half quantum and full quantum vortices and show that, remarkably, our predictions still hold for the situation of a full quantum vortex enclosing a half quantum vortex in its path. We discuss the experimentally relevant conditions under which these effects can be observed.

Quantum noise and entanglement generated by a local quantum quench

We examine the growth of entanglement under a quantum quench at point contacts of simple fractional quantum Hall fluids and its relation with the measurement of local observables. Recently Klich and Levitov proposed that the noise generated from a local quantum quench provides a measure of the entanglement entropy. Their methods were specific to non-interacting electrons and the generalization to interacting systems was left as an open question. In this work, we generalize their result to the Laughlin states. We investigate the noise generated in the current along the edge of a fractional quantum Hall state at filling factors $ν=1/m$, when a quantum point contact, initially closed, is fully opened at some initial time $t_0=0$. We find that local quenching in these systems gives time dependent correlation functions that have universal behavior on sufficiently long time and length scales. We calculate the noise and full counting statistics for $ν=1/m$ and find that in general, the entanglement entropy and noise generated are unrelated quantities. We also discuss a generalization of this problem to the critical quantum Ising spin chain.

Non-Abelian anyons: when Ising meets Fibonacci

We consider an interface between two non-Abelian quantum Hall states: the Moore-Read state, supporting anyons of Ising type, and the k=2 NASS (non-Abelian spin-singlet) state, supporting anyons of Fibonacci type. It is shown that the interface supports neutral excitations described by a 1+1 dimensional conformal field theory with central charge c=7/10. We discuss effects of the mismatch of the quantum statistical properties of the quasi-holes between the two sides, as reflected by the interface theory.
