A composite Higgs model analysis of forward-backward asymmetries in the production of tops at Tevatron and bottoms at LEP and SLC

We perform a joint analysis of the prediction of composite Higgs models for the discrepancies of the forward-backward asymmetries of top and bottom quarks at Tevatron and LEP+SLC, respectively. We build a two sector model which can be thought as an effective low energy description of 5D warped models and choose the quantum numbers of the fermionic resonances to protect the Z-couplings of the partially composite Standard Model light quarks. We analyze the cross section, forward-backward asymmetry and invariant mass distribution of the top anti-top production at Tevatron, as well as the bottom forward-backward asymmetry and the Z-branching fraction into b-quarks at LEP and SLC, for the two sector model. In the region of the parameter space that naturally leads to the Standard Model spectrum and solves the bottom anomaly, the model improves the top forward-backward asymmetry, giving a prediction of up to 10%, and predicts a small decrease of the $t \bar t$ cross section. It also predicts non-universal corrections of the Z-couplings to the light quarks of order 0.001.

Collider Bounds on Lee-Wick Higgs Bosons

We study the constraints on the Lee-Wick Higgs sector arising from direct collider searches. We work in an effective-field theory framework, where all of the Lee-Wick partners are integrated out, with the sole exception of the Lee-Wick Higgs bosons. The resulting theory is a two-Higgs doublet model where the second doublet has wrong-sign kinetic and mass terms. We include the bounds coming from direct Higgs searches at both LEP and Tevatron using the code HiggsBounds, and show the currently excluded parameter space. We also analyze the prospects of LHC Run-I, finding that with a total integrated luminosity of 5 fb $^{-1}$ and a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, most of the parameter space for the SM-like CP-even Higgs will be probed.

Phenomenology of a light gluon resonance in top-physics at Tevatron and LHC

We present a phenomenological analysis of the recent Tevatron results on the $t \bar t$ forward-backward asymmetry and invariant-mass spectrum assuming a new contribution from an s-channel gluon resonance with a mass in the range from 700 to 2500 GeV. In contrast to most of the previous works, this analysis shows that for masses below ~1 TeV resonant New Physics could accommodate the experimental data. In general, we find that axial-like couplings are preferred for light and top quark couplings, and that only top quark couples strongly to New Physics. We find that composite model scenarios arise naturally from only phenomenological analyses of the experimental results. We show that our results are compatible with recent LHC limits in dijet and $t \bar t$ production, and find some tension for large resonance mass ~2.5 TeV. We indicate as best observables for discriminating a relatively light new gluon a better resolution in CDF forward-backward asymmetry, as well as the $t \bar t$ charge asymmetry and invariant-mass spectrum at the LHC.

Casimir force between integrable and chaotic pistons

We have computed numerically the Casimir force between two identical pistons inside a very long cylinder, considering different shapes for the pistons. The pistons can be considered as quantum billiards, whose spectrum determines the vacuum force. The smooth part of the spectrum fixes the force at short distances, and depends only on geometric quantities like the area or perimeter of the piston. However, correcting terms to the force, coming from the oscillating part of the spectrum which is related to the classical dynamics of the billiard, are qualitatively different for classically integrable or chaotic systems. We have performed a detailed numerical analysis of the corresponding Casimir force for pistons with regular and chaotic classical dynamics. For a family of stadium billiards, we have found that the correcting part of the Casimir force presents a sudden change in the transition from regular to chaotic geometries.

Vertex Displacements for Acausal Particles: Testing the Lee-Wick Standard Model at the LHC

We propose to search for wrong displaced vertices, where decay products of the secondary vertex move towards the primary vertex instead of away from it, as a signature for microscopic violation of causality. We analyze in detail the leptonic sector of the recently proposed Lee-Wick Standard Model, which provides a well motivated framework to study acausal effects. We find that, assuming Minimal Flavor Violation, the Lee-Wick partners of the electron, {\tilde l}^e and \tilde e, can produce measurable wrong vertices at the LHC, the most promising channel being q \bar{q} --> \bar{\tilde l}^e {\tilde l}^e --> e^+ e^- jjjj. A Monte-Carlo simulation using MadGraph/MadEvent suggests that for M_l < 450 GeV the measurement of these acausal vertex displacements should be accessible in the LHC era.

Long range Casimir force induced by transverse electromagnetic modes

We consider the interaction of two perfectly conducting plates of arbitrary shape that are inside a non-simply connected cylinder with transverse section of the same shape. We show that the existence of transverse electromagnetic (TEM) modes produces a Casimir force that decays only as $1/a^2$, where $a$ is the distance between plates. The TEM force does not depend on the area of the plates and dominates at large distances over the force produced by the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes, providing in this way a physical realization of the 1+1 dimensional Casimir effect. For the particular case of a coaxial circular cylindrical cavity, we compute the TE, TM and TEM contributions to the force, and find the critical distance for which the TEM modes dominate.

Electroweak precision constraints on the Lee-Wick Standard Model

We present the constraints on the parameter space of the Lee-Wick Standard Model coming from electroweak precision observables. The model predicts a large positive S and a negative T. We show that it is possible to find some regions in parameter space with a fermionic state as light as 2.4-3.5 TeV. We also propose a simple extension of the model including a fourth generation. In this case it is possible to pass the electroweak constraints with Lee-Wick fermionic masses of order 0.4-1.5 TeV and Lee-Wick gauge masses of order 3 TeV.

Direct test of time reversal invariance violation in B mesons

In this letter we reinterpret and reanalyze the available data of the B meson factories showing the existence of direct experimental evidence of time reversal invariance violation in B mesons. This reinterpretation consists of using the available observables to define a new observable which, in a model independent way and without assuming CPT invariance, compares a transition between a $B^0$ and a here-defined $B_α$-state, with its time reversed transition. The observable then offers a direct way to probe time reversal invariance and it is therefore independent of any conclusion obtained from current experimental information on CP violation and CPT invariance. As far as the authors are concerned, this is the first direct evidence of time reversal invariance violation in B mesons and also the first one obtained from decaying particles whose mean life time difference is negligible.

Decoherence induced by Smith-Purcell radiation

The interaction between charged particles and the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field induces decoherence, and therefore affects the contrast of fringes in an interference experiment. In this article we show that if a double slit experiment is performed near a conducting grating, the fringe visibility is reduced. We find that the reduction of contrast is proportional to the number of grooves in the conducting surface, and that for realistic values of the parameters it could be large enough to be observed. The effect can be understood in terms of the Smith-Purcell radiation produced by the surface currents induced in the conductor.

Electroweak precision constraints on the Lee-Wick Standard Model

We perform an analysis of the electroweak precision observables in the Lee-Wick Standard Model. The most stringent restrictions come from the S and T parameters that receive important tree level and one loop contributions. In general the model predicts a large positive S and a negative T. To reproduce the electroweak data, if all the Lee-Wick masses are of the same order, the Lee-Wick scale is of order 5 TeV. We show that it is possible to find some regions in the parameter space with a fermionic state as light as 2.4-3.5 TeV, at the price of rising all the other masses to be larger than 5-8 TeV. To obtain a light Higgs with such heavy resonances a fine-tuning of order a few per cent, at least, is needed. We also propose a simple extension of the model including a fourth generation of Standard Model fermions with their Lee-Wick partners. We show that in this case it is possible to pass the electroweak constraints with Lee-Wick fermionic masses of order 0.4-1.5 TeV and Lee-Wick gauge masses of order 3 TeV.

CP, T and CPT analyses in EPR - correlated $ B^0 \bar B ^0 $ decays

In this work we study the T, CP and CPT symmetries in the B-meson system. Our analysis and results are addressed to the case of correlated mesons in the B-factories. In the first set of theory and results we investigate the consequences of these discrete symmetries in the B-mixing and interference between mixing and decay. With the help of the CP-tag we compute all possible intensities and asymmetries which concern flavour-specific and CP Golden Plate decays. Our proposed observables are a new self-consistency check for the Standard Model, as well as a new exploration for the traces of the discrete symmetries in the B-system. In the second set of results we study CPT violation in the initial state of the B-factories through the loss of indistinguishability of $B^0$ and $\bar B^0$. We show that, if the consequence of Bose statistic is relaxed, then the equal-sign dilepton events are considerably modified. We analyze the demise of flavour tagging and we also prove that the equal-sign charge asymmetry, $A_{sl}$, is an optimal observable where to look for this new CPT violation effect. The detailed study of this asymmetry allows us to predict different behaviours according to the possible values of the CPT violating parameter $\w$. We conclude that the best observable where to find traces of this novel kind of CPT violation is the analysis of $A_{sl}$ at small $\Dt$'s. We use existing data on $A_{sl}$ to put the first limits on $\w$.

The Demise of Flavour Tagging and its Delta-T Dependence

In this work we discuss how the loss of particle-antiparticle identity due to CPT violation affects the observables in the decay of two neutral EPR-correlated $B$-mesons. We study this possible new effect in the context of equal-sign flavour specific decays and we find a considerable modification in the $Δt$-dependence of the equal-sign dilepton charge asymmetry, $A_{sl}$. Although the more important changes occur right outside the $\Dt$ region that has been up-to-the-date effectively explored, we show that a deeper experimental research may be able to distinguish a possible existence of this new CPT violating parameter, $\w$. In any case, using the available data for $A_{sl}$, we put the first limits on $\w$.

Right handed currents and FSI phases in B^0 --> ϕK^{*0}

We consider possible effects of New Physics (NP) on the angular distributions of the decay B^0 --> ϕK^{*0}, showing how these effects depend on the nature of nonstandard interactions. In a general framework based on factorization, we show that triple products can be used to probe the chirality of NP currents. In this analysis we take into account the presence of non-vanishing strong phases, which is motivated by recent experimental evidence. It is seen that the observability of right-handed NP is strongly dependent on the relation between the relative magnitude of these phases and the ratio of Standard Model and NP scales. As an application we estimate the expected values of relevant observables in a particular Left Right Symmetric Model.

Vacuum polarization around stars: nonlocal approximation

We compute the vacuum polarization associated with quantum massless fields around stars with spherical symmetry. The nonlocal contribution to the vacuum polarization is dominant in the weak field limit, and induces quantum corrections to the exterior metric that depend on the inner structure of the star. It also violates the null energy conditions. We argue that similar results also hold in the low energy limit of quantum gravity. Previous calculations of the vacuum polarization in spherically symmetric spacetimes, based on local approximations, are not adequate for newtonian stars.

Correlated neutral B meson decays into CP eigenstates

In the two correlated $B$ meson decay experiment we propose to measure intensities relating CP eigenstate ($J/ψK_{S,L}$) decays on $both$ sides, which will be measurable in future upgrades of KEK and PEP. As a CP-forbidden transition, we obtain $I(J/ψK_S, J/ψK_S, Δt) \sim \sin ^2 (2β)$. We calculate in a model independent way all the possible intensities relating final CP and flavour eigenstate decays. Under CPT-invariance, the asymmetries for processes related by CP$Δt$ vanish for $ΔΓ=0$ and measure $ΔΓ$ linearly. We notice the impossibility to isolate the sign of $\cos (2\bet a)$ without an independent knowledge of the sign of $ΔΓ$. This exhaustion of the possible Golden Plate and flavour decays provides new observables which may throw light in our present understanding of CKM physics.

Covariant perturbation theory and the Randall-Sundrum picture

The effective action for quantum fields on a $d$-dimensional spacetime can be computed using a non local expansion in powers of the curvature. We show explicitly that, for conformal fields and up to quadratic order in the curvature, the non local effective action is equivalent to the $d+1$ action for classical gravity in $AdS_{d+1}$ restricted to a $d-1$-brane. This generalizes previous results about quantum corrections to the Newtonian potential and provides an alternative method for making local a non-local effective action. The equivalence can be easily understood by comparing the Kallen-Lehmann decomposition of the classical propagator with the spectral representation of the non local form factors in the quantum effective action.
