Stability of periodic waves in the model with intensity--dependent dispersion

We study standing periodic waves modeled by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with the intensity-dependent dispersion coefficient. Spatial periodic profiles are smooth if the frequency of the standing waves is below the limiting frequency, for which the profiles become peaked (piecewise continuously differentiable with a finite jump of the first derivative). We prove that there exist two families of the periodic waves with smooth profiles separated by a homoclinic orbit and the period function (the energy-to-period mapping) is monotonically increasing for the family inside the homoclinic orbit and decreasing for the family outside the homoclinic orbit. This property allows us to derive a sharp criterion for the energetic stability of such standing periodic waves under time evolution if the perturbations are periodic with the same period for both families and, additionally, for the family outside the homoclinic orbit, spatially odd with respect to the half-period. By numerically approximating the sharp stability criterion, we show that both families are energetically stable for small frequencies but become unstable when the frequency approaches the limiting frequency of the peaked waves.

Cnoidal Waves for the cubic nonlinear Klein-Gordon and Schrödinger Equations

In this paper, we establish orbital stability results for \textit{cnoidal} periodic waves of the cubic nonlinear Klein-Gordon and Schrödinger equations in the energy space restricted to zero mean periodic functions. More precisely, for one hand, we prove that the cnoidal waves of the cubic Klein-Gordon equation are orbitally unstable as a direct application of the theory developed by Grillakis, Shatah, and Strauss. On the other hand, we show that the cnoidal waves for the Schrödinger equation are orbitally stable by constructing a suitable Lyapunov functional restricted to the associated zero mean energy space. The spectral analysis of the corresponding linearized operators, restricted to the periodic Sobolev space consisting of zero mean periodic functions, is performed using the Floquet theory and a Morse Index Theorem.

Instability of the peaked traveling wave in a local model for shallow water waves

The traveling wave with the peaked profile arises in the limit of the family of traveling waves with the smooth profiles. We study the linear and nonlinear stability of the peaked traveling wave by using a local model for shallow water waves, which is related to the Hunter--Saxton equation. The evolution problem is well-defined in the function space $H^1_{\rm per} \cap W^{1,\infty}$, where we derive the linearized equations of motion and study the nonlinear evolution of co-periodic perturbations to the peaked periodic wave by using methods of characteristics. Within the linearized equations, we prove the spectral instability of the peaked traveling wave from the spectrum of the linearized operator in a Hilbert space, which completely covers the closed vertical strip with a specific half-width. Within the nonlinear equations, we prove the nonlinear instability of the peaked traveling wave by showing that the gradient of perturbations grow at the wave peak. By using numerical approximations of the smooth traveling waves and the spectrum of their associated linearized operator, we show that the spectral instability of the peaked traveling wave cannot be obtained in the limit along the family of the spectrally stable smooth traveling waves.

On the orbital stability of solitary waves for the fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation

In this paper, we present new results regarding the orbital stability of solitary standing waves for the general fourth-order Schrödinger equation with mixed dispersion. The existence of solitary waves can be determined both as minimizers of a constrained complex functional and by using a numerical approach. In addition, for specific values of the frequency associated with the standing wave, one obtains explicit solutions with a hyperbolic secant profile. Despite these explicit solutions being minimizers of the constrained functional, they cannot be seen as a smooth curve of solitary waves, and this fact prevents their determination of stability using classical approaches in the current literature. To overcome this difficulty, we employ a numerical approach to construct a smooth curve of solitary waves. The existence of a smooth curve is useful for showing the existence of a threshold power $α_0\approx 4.8$ of the nonlinear term such that if $α\in (0,α_0),$ the explicit solitary wave is stable, and if $α>α_0$, the wave is unstable. An important feature of our work, caused by the presence of the mixed dispersion term, concerns the fact that the threshold value $α_0 \approx 4.8$ is not the same as that established for proving the existence of global solutions in the energy space, as is well known for the classical nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Monotonicity of the period map for the equation $-φ''+φ-φ^{k}=0$

In this paper, we establish the monotonicity of the period map in terms of the energy levels for certain periodic solutions of the equation $-φ''+φ-φ^{k}=0$, where $k>1$ is a real number. We present a new approach to demonstrate this property, utilizing spectral information of the corresponding linearized operator around the periodic solution and tools related to Floquet theory.

Spectral stability of multiple periodic waves for the Schrodinger system with cubic nonlinearity

Results concerning the existence and spectral stability and instability of multiple periodic wave solutions for the nonlinear Schrödinger system with \textit{dnoidal} and \textit{cnoidal} profile will be determined in this manuscript. The spectral analysis for the corresponding linearized operator is established by using the comparison theorem and tools of Floquet theory. The main results are determined by applying the spectral stability theory in \cite{KapitulaKevrekidisSandstedeI} and \cite{KapitulaKevrekidisSandstedeII} via Krein signature.

Stability of Periodic Waves for the Defocusing Fractional Cubic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

In this paper, we determine the spectral instability of periodic odd waves for the defocusing fractional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Our approach is based on periodic perturbations that have the same period as the standing wave solution, and we construct real periodic waves by minimizing a suitable constrained problem. The odd solution generates three negative simple eigenvalues for the associated linearized operator, and we obtain all this spectral information by using tools related to the oscillation theorem for fractional Hill operators. Newton's iteration method is presented to generate the odd periodic standing wave solutions and numerical results have been used to apply the spectral stability theory via Krein signature as established in [22] and [23].

Spectral Stability of Periodic Traveling Wave Solutions for a Double Dispersion Equation

In this paper, we investigate the spectral stability of periodic traveling waves for a cubic-quintic and double dispersion equation. Using the quadrature method we find explict periodic waves and we also present a characterization for all positive and periodic solutions for the model using the monotonicity of the period map in terms of the energy levels. The monotonicity of the period map is also useful to obtain the quantity and multiplicity of non-positive eigenvalues for the associated linearized operator and to do so, we use tools of the Floquet theory. Finally, we prove the spectral stability by analysing the difference between the number of negative eigenvalues of a convenient linear operator restricted to the space constituted by zero-mean periodic functions and the number of negative eigenvalues of the matrix formed by the tangent space associated to the low order conserved quantities of the evolution model.

Orbital Stability of Periodic Traveling Waves for the "abcd" Boussinesq Systems

New results concerning the orbital stability of periodic traveling wave solutions for the "abcd" Boussinesq model will be shown in this manuscript. For the existence of solutions, we use basic tools of ordinary differential equations to show that the corresponding periodic wave depends on the Jacobi elliptic function of cnoidal type. The spectral analysis for the associated linearized operator is determined by using some tools concerning the Floquet theory. The orbital stability is then established by applying the abstract results [2] and [14] which give us sufficient conditions to the orbital stability for a general class of evolution equations.

On the Stability of Solitary Wave Solutions for a Generalized Fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony Equation

In this paper we establish a rigorous spectral stability analysis for solitary waves associated to a generalized fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony type equation. Besides the well known smooth and positive solitary wave with large wave speed, we present the existence of smooth negative solitary waves having small wave speed. The spectral stability is then determined by analysing the behaviour of the associated linearized operator around the wave restricted to the orthogonal of the tangent space related to the momentum at the solitary wave. Since the analytical solution is not known, we generate the negative solitary waves numerically by using Petviashvili method. We also present some numerical experiments to observe the stability properties of solitary waves for various values of the order of nonlinearity and fractional derivative. Some remarks concerning the orbital stability are also celebrated.

On the spectral stability of periodic traveling waves for the critical Korteweg-de Vries and Gardner equations

In this paper, we determine spectral stability results of periodic waves for the critical Korteweg-de Vries and Gardner equations. For the first equation, we show that both positive and zero mean periodic traveling wave solutions possess a threshold value which may provides us a rupture in the spectral stability. Concerning the second equation, we establish the existence of periodic waves using a Galilean transformation on the periodic cnoidal solution for the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation and for both equations, the threshold values are the same. The main advantage presented in our paper concerns in solving some auxiliary initial value problems to obtain the spectral stability.

Stability of smooth periodic traveling waves in the Camassa-Holm equation

Smooth periodic travelling waves in the Camassa--Holm (CH) equation are revisited. We show that these periodic waves can be characterized in two different ways by using two different Hamiltonian structures. The standard formulation, common to the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation, has several disadvantages, e.g., the period function is not monotone and the quadratic energy form may have two rather than one negative eigenvalues. We explore the nonstandard formulation and prove that the period function is monotone and the quadratic energy form has only one simple negative eigenvalue. We deduce a precise condition for the spectral and orbital stability of the smooth periodic travelling waves and show numerically that this condition is satisfied in the open region where the smooth periodic waves exist.

Odd Periodic Waves for some Klein-Gordon Type Equations: Existence and Stability

In this paper, we establish the existence and stability properties of odd periodic waves related to the Klein-Gordon type equations, which include the well known $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^6$ models. Existence of periodic waves is determined by using a general planar theory of ODE. The spectral analysis for the corresponding linearized operator is established using the monotonicity of the period map combined with an improvement of the standard Floquet theory. Orbital stability in the odd sector of the energy space is proved using exclusively the monotonicity of the period map. The orbital instability of explicit solutions for the $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^6$ models is presented using the abstract approach in \cite{grillakis1}.

Periodic waves in the fractional modified Korteweg--de Vries equation

Periodic waves in the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation are revisited in the setting of the fractional Laplacian. Two families of solutions in the local case are given by the sign-definite dnoidal and sign-indefinite cnoidal solutions. Both solutions can be characterized in the general fractional case as global minimizers of the quadratic part of the energy functional subject to the fixed $L^4$ norm: the sign-definite (sign-indefinite) solutions are obtained in the subspace of even (odd) functions. Morse index is computed for both solutions and the spectral stability criterion is derived. We show numerically that the family of sign-definite solutions has a generic fold bifurcation for the fractional Laplacian of lower regularity and the family of sign-indefinite solutions has a generic symmetry-breaking bifurcation both in the fractional and local cases.

Existence and orbital stability of standing waves for the 1D Schrödinger-Kirchhoff equation

In this paper we establish the orbital stability of standing wave solutions associated to the one-dimensional Schrödinger-Kirchhoff equation. The presence of a mixed term gives us more dispersion, and consequently, a different scenario for the stability of solitary waves in contrast with the corresponding nonlinear Schrödinger equation. For periodic waves, we exhibit two explicit solutions and prove the orbital stability in the energy space.

Orbital Stability of Periodic Standing Waves for the Logarithmic Klein-Gordon Equation

The main goal of this paper is to present orbital stability results of periodic standing waves for the one-dimensional logarithmic Klein-Gordon equation. To do so, we first use compactness arguments and a non-standard analysis to obtain the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for the associated Cauchy problem in the energy space. Second, we prove the orbital stability of standing waves using a stablity analysis of conservative systems.

Periodic Traveling-wave solutions for regularized dispersive equations: Sufficient conditions for orbital stability with applications

In this paper, we establish a new criterion for the orbital stability of periodic waves related to a general class of regularized dispersive equations. More specifically, we present sufficient conditions for the stability without knowing the positiveness of the associated hessian matrix. As application of our method, we show the orbital stability for the fifth-order model. The orbital stability of periodic waves resulting from a minimization of a convenient functional is also proved.
