Exact One Loop Running Couplings in the Standard Model

Taking the dominant couplings in the standard model to be the quartic scalar coupling, the Yukawa coupling of the top quark, and the SU(3) gauge coupling, we consider their associated running couplings to one loop order. Despite the non-linear nature of the differential equations governing these functions, we show that they can be solved exactly. The nature of these solutions is discussed and their singularity structure is examined. It is shown that for a sufficiently small Higgs mass, the quartic scalar coupling decreases with increasing energy scale and becomes negative, indicative of vacuum instability. This behavior changes for a Higgs mass greater than 168 GeV, beyond which this couplant increases with increasing energy scales and becomes singular prior to the ultraviolet (UV) pole of the Yukawa coupling. Upper and lower bounds on the Higgs mass corresponding to new physics at the TeV scale are obtained and compare favourably with the numerical results of the one-loop and two-loop analyses with inclusion of electroweak couplings.

Using the Renormalization Group Functions to Uniquely Determine the Effective Potential in Massless Scalar Electrodynamics

It has been demonstrated that the effective potential V(ϕ) in a massless O(N) λϕ^4_4 model is determined completely by the renormalization group functions provided the renormalization condition \frac{d^4V}{d ϕ^4}|_{ϕ=μ}=λis used. This is shown to also hold in massless scalar electrodynamics. By employing a variant of the method of characteristics, the sums contributing to the leading-log, next-to-leading-log etc. contributions to V(ϕ) can be evaluated.

A Unique Determination of the Effective Potential in Terms of Renormalization Group Functions

The perturbative effective potential V in the massless $λϕ^4$ model with a global O(N) symmetry is uniquely determined to all orders by the renormalization group functions alone when the Coleman-Weinberg renormalization condition $\frac{d^4V}{dϕ^4}|_{ϕ= μ} = λ$ is used, where $μ$ represents the renormalization scale. Systematic methods are developed to express the n-loop effective potential in the Coleman-Weinberg scheme in terms of the known n-loop minimal subtraction (MS) renormalization-group functions. Moreover, it also proves possible to sum the leading- and subsequent-to-leading-logarithm contributions to V. An essential element of this analysis is a conversion of the renormalization group functions in the Coleman-Weinberg scheme to the renormalization group functions in the MS scheme. As an example, the explicit five-loop effective potential is obtained from the known five-loop MS renormalization group functions and we explicitly sum the leading logarithm (LL), next-to-leading (NLL), and further subleading-logarithm contributions to V. Extensions of these results to massless scalar QED are also presented. Because massless scalar QED has two couplings, conversion of the RG functions from the MS scheme to the CW scheme requires the use of multi-scale renormalization group methods.

Renormalization Group Determination of the Five-Loop Effective Potential for Massless Scalar Field Theory

The five-loop effective potential and the associated summation of subleading logarithms for O(4) globally-symmetric massless $λϕ^4$ field theory in the Coleman-Weinberg renormalization scheme $\frac{d^4V}{dϕ^4}|_{ϕ= μ} = λ$ (where $μ$ is the renormalization scale) is calculated via renormalization-group methods. An important aspect of this analysis is conversion of the known five-loop renormalization-group functions in the minimal-subtraction (MS) scheme to the Coleman-Weinberg scheme.

The Derivative Expansion of the Effective Action and the Renormalization Group Equation

The perturbative evaluation of the effective action can be expanded in powers of derivatives of the external field. We apply the renormalization group equation to the term in the effective action that is second order in the derivatives of the external field and all orders in a constant external field, considering both massless scalar $ϕ_4^4$ model and massless scalar electrodynamics. A so-called ``on shell'' renormalization scheme permits one to express this ``kinetic term'' for the scalar field entirely in terms of the renormalization group functions appropriate for this scheme. These renormalization group functions can be related to those associated with minimal subtraction.

Tensor Self Energy in a Vector-Tensor Model

The tensor self energy is computed at one loop order in a model in which a vector and tensor interact in a way that eliminates all tensor degrees of freedom. Divergencies arise which cannot be eliminated without introducing a kinetic term for the tensor field which does not appear in the classical action. We comment on a possible resolution of this puzzle.

The Effective Potential in the Massive $ϕ_4^4$ Model

By applying the renormalization group equation, it has been shown that the effective potential $V$ in the massless $ϕ_4^4$ model and in massless scalar quantum electrodynamics is independent of the scalar field. This analysis is extended here to the massive $ϕ_4^4$ model, showing that the effective potential is independent of $ϕ$ here as well.

An investigation of uniform expansions of large order Bessel functions in Gravitational Wave Signals from Pulsars

In this work, we extend the analytic treatment of Bessel functions of large order and/or argument. We examine uniform asymptotic Bessel function expansions and show their accuracy and range of validity. Such situations arise in a variety of applications, in particular the Fourier transform of the gravitational wave signal from a pulsar. The uniform expansion we consider here is found to be valid in the entire range of the argument.

On the Standard Approach to Renormalization Group Improvement

Two approaches to renormalization-group improvement are examined: the substitution of the solutions of running couplings, masses and fields into perturbatively computed quantities is compared with the systematic sum of all the leading log (LL), next-to-leading log (NLL) etc. contributions to radiatively corrected processes, with n-loop expressions for the running quantities being responsible for summing N^{n}LL contributions. A detailed comparison of these procedures is made in the context of the effective potential V in the 4-dimensional O(4) massless $λϕ^{4}$ model, showing the distinction between these procedures at two-loop order when considering the NLL contributions to the effective potential V.

Stability of Subsequent-to-Leading-Logarithm Corrections to the Effective Potential for Radiative Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

We demonstrate the stability under subsequent-to-leading logarithm corrections of the quartic scalar-field coupling constant $λ$ and the running Higgs boson mass obtained from the (initially massless) effective potential for radiatively broken electroweak symmetry in the single-Higgs-Doublet Standard Model. Such subsequent-to-leading logarithm contributions are systematically extracted from the renormalization group equation considered beyond one-loop order. We show $λ$ to be the dominant coupling constant of the effective potential for the radiatively broken case of electroweak symmetry. We demonstrate the stability of $λ$ and the running Higgs boson mass through five orders of successively subleading logarithmic corrections to the scalar-field-theory projection of the effective potential for which all coupling constants except the dominant coupling constant $λ$ are disregarded. We present a full next-to-leading logarithm potential in the three dominant Standard Model coupling constants ($t$-quark-Yukawa, $α_s$, and $λ$) from these coupling constants' contribution to two loop $β$- and $γ$-functions. Finally, we demonstrate the manifest order-by-order stability of the physical Higgs boson mass in the 220-231 GeV range. In particular, we obtain a 231 GeV physical Higgs boson mass inclusive of the $t$-quark-Yukawa and $α_s$ coupling constants to next-to-leading logarithm order, and inclusive of the smaller $SU(2)\times U(1)$ gauge coupling constants to leading logarithm order.

A Study of the Gravitational Wave Pulsar Signal with orbital and spindown Effects

In this work we present analytic and numerical treatments of the gravitational wave signal from a pulsar which includes spindown. We consider phase corrections to a received monochromatic signal due to rotational and elliptical orbital motion of the Earth, as well as perturbations due to Jupiter and the Moon. We discuss the Fourier transform of such a signal, which is expressed in terms of well known special functions and lends itself to a tractable numerical analysis.

The renormalization group improved effective potential in massless models

The effective potential $V$ is considered in massless $λϕ^4_4$ theory. The expansion of $V$ in powers of the coupling $λ$ and of the logarithm of the background field $ϕ$ is reorganized in two ways; first as a series in $λ$ alone, then as a series in $\lnϕ$ alone. By applying the renormalization group (RG) equation to $V$, these expansions can be summed. Using the condition $V^\prime(v) = 0$ (where $v$ is the vacuum expectation value of $ϕ$) in conjunction with the expansion of $V$ in powers of $\lnϕ$ fixes $V$ provided $v\neq 0$. In this case, the dependence of $V$ on $ϕ$ drops out and $V$ is not analytic in $λ$. Massless scalar electrodynamics is considered using the same approach.

Startling Equivalences in the Higgs-Goldstone Sector between Radiative and Lowest-Order Conventional Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

For the Higgs boson mass of $\sim 220$ GeV expected to arise from radiative electroweak symmetry breaking, we find the same lowest-order expressions as would be obtained from conventional electroweak symmetry breaking, given the same Higgs boson mass, for Higgs-Goldstone sector scattering processes identified with $W_L^ + W_L^- \to W_L^+ W_L^-$, $W_L^+ W_L^- \to Z_L Z_L$, as well as for Higgs boson decay widths $H \to W_L^+ W_L^-$, $H \to Z_L Z_L$. The radiatively broken case, however, leads to an order of magnitude enhancement over lowest-order conventional symmetry breaking for scattering processes $W_L^+ W_L^+ \to H H$, $Z_L Z_L \to H H$, as well as a factor of $\sim 30$ enhancement for $H H \to H H$.

The Analysis of Large Order Bessel Functions in Gravitational Wave Signals from Pulsars

In this work, we present the analytic treatment of the large order Bessel functions that arise in the Fourier Transform (FT) of the Gravitational Wave (GW) signal from a pulsar. We outline several strategies which employ asymptotic expansions in evaluation of such Bessel functions which also happen to have large argument. Large order Bessel functions also arise in the Peters-Mathews model of binary inspiralling stars emitting GW and several problems in potential scattering theory. Other applications also arise in a variety of problems in Applied Mathematics as well as in the Natural Sciences and present a challenge for High Performance Computing(HPC).

Radiative Corrections to the Inflaton Potential as an Explanation of Suppressed Large Scale Power in Density Perturbations and the Cosmic Microwave Background

The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe microwave background data suggest that the primordial spectrum of scalar curvature fluctuations is suppressed at small wavenumbers. We propose a UV/IR mixing effect in small-field inflationary models that can explain the observable deviation in WMAP data from the concordance model. Specifically, in inflationary models where the inflaton couples to an asymptotically free gauge theory, the radiative corrections to the effective inflaton potential can be anomalously large. This occurs for small values of the inflaton field which are of the order of the gauge theory strong coupling scale. Radiative corrections cause the inflaton potential to blow up at small values of the inflaton field. As a result, these corrections can violate the slow-roll condition at the initial stage of the inflation and suppress the production of scalar density perturbations.

In this work, we present the analytic treatment of the Fourier Transform (FT) of the Gravitational Wave (GW) signal from a pulsar including spin down corrections in a parametrized model discussed by Brady et. al. The formalism lends itself to a development of the FT in terms of well known special functions and integrals defining the spin down moments.

Optimal Renormalization-Group Improvement of the Perturbative Series for the e^+ e^- -Annihilation Cross-Section

Using renormalization-group methods, we derive differential equations for the all-orders summation of logarithmic corrections to the QCD series for R(s) = sigma(e^+ e^- --> hadrons)/sigma(e^+ e^- --> mu^+ mu^-), as obtained from the imaginary part of the purely-perturbative vector-current correlation function. We present explicit solutions for the summation of leading and up to three subsequent subleading orders of logarithms. The summations accessible from the four-loop vector-correlator not only lead to a substantial reduction in sensitivity to the renormalization scale, but necessarily impose a common infrared bound on perturbative approximations to R(s), regardless of the infrared behaviour of the true QCD couplant.

Pade/renormalization-group improvement of inclusive semileptonic B decay rates

Renormalization Group (RG) and optimized Pade-approximant methods are used to estimate the three-loop perturbative contributions to the inclusive semileptonic b \to u and b \to c decay rates. It is noted that the \bar{MS} scheme works favorably in the b \to u case whereas the pole mass scheme shows better convergence in the b \to c case. Upon the inclusion of the estimated three-loop contribution, we find the full perturbative decay rate to be 192π^3Γ(b\to u\barν_\ell\ell^-)/(G_F^2| V_{ub}|^2) = 2065 \pm 290{\rm GeV^5} and 192π^3Γ(b\to c\ell^-\barν_\ell)/(G_F^2|V_{cb}|^2)= 992 \pm 198 {\rm GeV^5}, respectively. The errors are inclusive of theoretical uncertainties and non-perturbative effects. Ultimately, these perturbative contributions reduce the theoretical uncertainty in the extraction of the CKM matrix elements |V_{ub}| and |V_{cb}| from their respective measured inclusive semileptonic branching ratio(s).
