An Online Probabilistic Distributed Tracing System

Distributed tracing has become a fundamental tool for diagnosing performance issues in the cloud by recording causally ordered, end-to-end workflows of request executions. However, tracing in production workloads can introduce significant overheads due to the extensive instrumentation needed for identifying performance variations. This paper addresses the trade-off between the cost of tracing and the utility of the "spans" within that trace through Astraea, an online probabilistic distributed tracing system. Astraea is based on our technique that combines online Bayesian learning and multi-armed bandit frameworks. This formulation enables Astraea to effectively steer tracing towards the useful instrumentation needed for accurate performance diagnosis. Astraea localizes performance variations using only 10-28% of available instrumentation, markedly reducing tracing overhead, storage, compute costs, and trace analysis time.

Analytical results for long time behavior in anomalous diffusion

We investigate through a Generalized Langevin formalism the phenomenon of anomalous diffusion for asymptotic times, and we generalized the concept of the diffusion exponent. A method is proposed to obtain the diffusion coefficient analytically through the introduction of a time scaling factor $λ$. We obtain as well an exact expression for $λ$ for all kinds of diffusion. Moreover, we show that $λ$ is a universal parameter determined by the diffusion exponent. The results are then compared with numerical calculations and very good agreement is observed. The method is general and may be applied to many types of stochastic problem.

Decaying Vacuum Cosmology and its Scalar Field Description

We discuss the cosmological consequences of an interacting model in the dark sector in which the $Λ$ component evolves as a truncated power series of the Hubble parameter. In order to constrain the free parameters of the model we carry out a joint statistical analysis involving observational data from current type Ia supernovae, recent estimates of the cosmic microwave background shift parameter and baryon acoustic oscillations measurements. Finally, we adopt a theoretical method to derive the coupled scalar field version for this non-equilibrium decaying vacuum accelerating cosmology.

Newtonian Perturbations on Models with Matter Creation

Creation of Cold Dark Matter (CCDM) can macroscopically be described by a negative pressure, and, therefore, the mechanism is capable to accelerate the Universe, without the need of an additional dark energy component. In this framework we discuss the evolution of perturbations by considering a Neo-Newtonian approach where, unlike in the standard Newtonian cosmology, the fluid pressure is taken into account even in the homogeneous and isotropic background equations (Lima, Zanchin and Brandenberger, MNRAS {\bf 291}, L1, 1997). The evolution of the density contrast is calculated in the linear approximation and compared to the one predicted by the $Λ$CDM model. The difference between the CCDM and $Λ$CDM predictions at the perturbative level is quantified by using three different statistical methods, namely: a simple $χ^{2}$-analysis in the relevant space parameter, a Bayesian statistical inference, and, finally, a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. We find that under certain circumstances the CCDM scenario analysed here predicts an overall dynamics (including Hubble flow and matter fluctuation field) which fully recovers that of the traditional cosmic concordance model. Our basic conclusion is that such a reduction of the dark sector provides a viable alternative description to the accelerating $Λ$CDM cosmology.

Pattern formation and coexistence domains for a nonlocal population dynamics

In this communication we propose a most general equation to study pattern formation for one-species population and their limit domains in systems of length L. To accomplish this we include non-locality in the growth and competition terms where the integral kernels are now depend on characteristic length parameters alpha and beta. Therefore, we derived a parameter space (alpha, beta) where it is possible to analyze a coexistence curve alpha*=alpha*(β) which delimits domains for the existence (or not) of pattern formation in population dynamics systems. We show that this curve has an analogy with coexistence curve in classical thermodynamics and critical phenomena physics. We have successfully compared this model with experimental data for diffusion of Escherichia coli populations.

Note on "Continuous matter creation and the acceleration of the universe: the growth of density fluctuations"

Recently, de Roany & Pacheco (2010) performed a Newtonian analysis on the evolution of perturbations for a class of relativistic cosmological models with Creation of Cold Dark Matter (CCDM) proposed by the present authors. In this note we demonstrate that the basic equations adopted in their work do not recover the specific (unperturbed) CCDM model. Unlike to what happens in the original CCDM cosmology, their basic conclusions refer to a decelerating cosmological model in which there is no transition from a decelerating to an accelerating regime as required by SNe type Ia and complementary observations.

CDM Accelerating Cosmology as an Alternative to LCDM model

A new accelerating cosmology driven only by baryons plus cold dark matter (CDM) is proposed in the framework of general relativity. In this model the present accelerating stage of the Universe is powered by the negative pressure describing the gravitationally-induced particle production of cold dark matter particles. This kind of scenario has only one free parameter and the differential equation governing the evolution of the scale factor is exactly the same of the $Λ$CDM model. For a spatially flat Universe, as predicted by inflation ($Ω_{dm}+Ω_{baryon}=1$), it is found that the effectively observed matter density parameter is $Ω_{meff} = 1- α$, where $α$ is the constant parameter specifying the CDM particle creation rate. The supernovae test based on the Union data (2008) requires $α\sim 0.71$ so that $Ω_{meff} \sim 0.29$ as independently derived from weak gravitational lensing, the large scale structure and other complementary observations.

Protein motors induced enhanced diffusion in intracellular transport

Diffusion of transported particles in the intracellular medium is described by means of a generalized diffusion equation containing forces due to the cytoskeleton network and to the protein motors. We find that the enhanced diffusion observed in experiments depends on the nature of the force exerted by the protein motors and on parameters characterizing the intracellular medium which is described in terms of a generalized Debye spectrum for the noise density of states.

Entropy, non-ergodicity and non-Gaussian behaviour in ballistic transport

Ballistic transportation introduces new challenges in the thermodynamic properties of a gas of particles. For example, violation of mixing, ergodicity and of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem may occur, since all these processes are connected. In this work, we obtain results for all ranges of diffusion, i.e., both for subdiffusion and superdiffusion, where the bath is such that it gives origin to a colored noise. In this way we obtain the skewness and the non-Gaussian factor for the probability distribution function of the dynamical variable. We put particular emphasis on ballistic diffusion, and we demonstrate that in this case, although the second law of thermodynamics is preserved, the entropy does not reach a maximum and a non-Gaussian behavior occurs. This implies the non-applicability of the central limit theorem.

Stochastic description of the dynamics of the random-exchange Heisenberg chain

We study the diffusion process in a Heisenberg chain with correlated spatial disorder, with a power spectrum in the momentum space behaving as $k^{-β}$, using a stochastic description. It establishes a direct connection between the fluctuation in the spin-wave density of states and the noise density of states. For continuous ranges of the exponent $β$, we find superdiffusive and ballistic spin-wave motions. Both diffusion exponents predicted by the stochastic procedure agree with the ones calculated using the Hamiltonian dynamics.

Anomalous diffusion on crumpled wires in two dimensions

It is investigated the statistical properties of random walks evolving on real configurations of a crumpled wire rigidly jammed in two dimensions. These crumpled hierarchical structures with complex topology are obtained from a metallic wire injected at a constant rate into a transparent planar cell of 20cm of diameter. The observed diffusion is anomalous with an exponent very close to that obtained at the threshold of two dimensional percolation. A comparison of the system studied in this paper with other systems of physical interest is also made, and an experimental consequence of our results is discussed.

Self-Interactions in the Spacetime of a Scalar-Tensor Cosmic String

We study the effect of the geometry and topology of a scalar-tensor cosmic string space-time on the electric and magnetic fields of line sources. It is shown that the dilatonic coupling of the gravity induces effects along the string comparable to a current flow allowing for forbidden regions near the string.

Mixing, Ergodicity and the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem in complex systems

Complex systems such as glasses, gels, granular materials, and systems far from equilibrium exhibit violation of the ergodic hypothesis (EH) and of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT). Recent investigations in systems with memory have established a hierarchical connection between mixing, the EH and the FDT. They have shown that a failure of the mixing condition (MC) will lead to the subsequent failures of the EH and of the FDT. Another important point is that such violations are not limited to complex systems: simple systems may also display this feature. Results from such systems are analytical and obviously easier to understand than those obtained in complex structures, where a large number of competing phenomena are present. In this work, we review some important requirements for the validity of the FDT and its connection with mixing, the EH and anomalous diffusion in one-dimensional systems. We show that when the FDT fails, an out-of-equilibrium system relaxes to an effective temperature different from that of the heat reservoir. This effective temperature is a signature of metastability found in many complex systems such as spin-glasses and granular materials.

Renormalization--Group Solutions for Yukawa Potential

The self--similar renormalization group is used to obtain expressions for the spectrum of the Hamiltonian with the Yukawa potential. The critical screening parameter above which there are no bound states is also obtained by this method. The approach presented illustrates that one can achieve good accuracy without involving extensive numerical calculations, but invoking instead the renormalization--group techniques.

Roundoff-induced Coalescence of Chaotic Trajectories

Numerical experiments recently discussed in the literature show that identical nonlinear chaotic systems linked by a common noise term (or signal) may synchronize after a finite time. We study the process of synchronization as function of precision of calculations. Two generic behaviors of the average coalescence time are identified: exponential or linear. In both cases no synchronization occurs if iterations are done with {\em infinite} precision.
