On a Family of 2-Variable Orthogonal Krawtchouk Polynomials

We give a hypergeometric proof involving a family of 2-variable Krawtchouk polynomials that were obtained earlier by Hoare and Rahman [SIGMA 4 (2008), 089, 18 pages] as a limit of the 9-j symbols of quantum angular momentum theory, and shown to be eigenfunctions of the transition probability kernel corresponding to a "poker dice" type probability model. The proof in this paper derives and makes use of the necessary and sufficient conditions of orthogonality in establishing orthogonality as well as indicating their geometrical significance. We also derive a 5-term recurrence relation satisfied by these polynomials.

Matrix differential equations and scalar polynomials satisfying higher order recursions

We show that any scalar differential operator with a family of polyno- mials as its common eigenfunctions leads canonically to a matrix differen- tial operator with the same property. The construction of the correspond- ing family of matrix valued polynomials has been studied in [D1, D2, DV] but the existence of a differential operator having them as common eigen- functions had not been considered This correspondence goes only one way and most matrix valued situations do not arise in this fashion. We illustrate this general construction with a few examples. In the case of some families of scalar valued polynomials introduced in [GH] we take a first look at the algebra of all matrix differential operators that share these common eigenfunctions and uncover a number of phenomena that are new to the matrix valued case.

The Darboux process and a noncommutative bispectral problem

The Darboux process, also known by many other names, played a very important role in some extremely enjoyable joint work that Hans and I did 25 years ago. I revisit a version of this problem in a case when scalars are replaced by matrices, i.e., elements of a non-commutative ring. Many of the issues studied here can be pushed to the case of a ring with identity, but my emphasis is on very concrete examples involving $2 \times 2$ matrices.

The Rahman Polynomials Are Bispectral

In a very recent paper, M. Rahman introduced a remarkable family of polynomials in two variables as the eigenfunctions of the transition matrix for a nontrivial Markov chain due to M. Hoare and M. Rahman. I indicate here that these polynomials are bispectral. This should be just one of the many remarkable properties enjoyed by these polynomials. For several challenges, including finding a general proof of some of the facts displayed here the reader should look at the last section of this paper.

The prolate spheroidal phenomena and bispectrality

Landau, Pollak, Slepian, and Tracy, Widom discovered that certain integral operators with so called Bessel and Airy kernels possess commuting differential operators and found important applications of this phenomena in time-band limiting and random matrix theory. In this paper we announce that very large classes of integral operators derived from bispectral algebras of rank 1 and 2 (parametrized by lagrangian grassmannians of infinitely large size) have this property. The above examples come from special points in these grassmannians.

Discrete bispectral Darboux transformations from Jacobi operators

We construct families of bispectral difference operators of the form a(n)T + b(n) + c(n) T^{-1} where T is the shift operator. They are obtained as discrete Darboux transformations from appropriate extensions of Jacobi operators. We conjecture that along with operators previously constructed by Grunbaum, Haine, Horozov, and Iliev they exhaust all bispectral regular (i.e. a(n)c(n) \neq 0, for all integer n) operators of the form above.
