Multi-Epoch HST Observations of IZw18: Characterization of Variable Stars at Ultra-Low Metallicities

Variable stars have been identified for the first time in the very metal-poor Blue Compact dwarf galaxy IZw18, using deep multi-band (F606W, F814W)time-series photometry obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We detected 34 candidate variable stars in the galaxy. We classify three of them as Classical Cepheids, with periods of 8.71, 125.0 and 130.3 days, respectively, and other two as long period variables with periodicities longer than a hundred days. These are the lowest metallicity Classical Cepheids known so far, thus providing the opportunity to explore and fit models of stellar pulsation fo Classical Cepheids at previously inaccessible metallicities. The period distribution of the confirmed Cepheids is markedly different from what is seen in other nearby galaxies, which is likely related to the star bursting nature of IZw18. By applying to the 8.71 days Cepheid theoretical Wesenheit (V,I) relations based on new pulsation models of Classical Cepheids specifically computed for the extremely low metallicity of this galaxy (Z=0.0004, Y=0.24), we estimate the distance modulus of IZw18 to be mu_0= 31.4pm0.2 D=19.0^{+1.8}_{-1.7}Mpc) for canonical models of Classical Cepheids, and of 31.2pm0.2 mag (D=17.4^{+1.6}_{-1.6}Mpc) using over luminous models. The theoretical modeling of the star's light curves provides mu_0=31.4pm0.1 mag, D=19.0^{+0.9}_{-0.9} Mpc, in good agreement with the results from the theoretical Wesenheit relations. These pulsation distances bracket the distance of 18.2pm1.5Mpc inferred by Aloisi et al. (2007) using the galaxy's Red Giant Branch Tip.

E+S galaxy pairs: are they the precursors of fossil groups?

Galaxy pairs may represent a way station in the evolutionary path from poor groups to giant isolated ellipticals (or fossil groups). To test this evolutionary scenario, we investigated the environment of 4 galaxy pairs composed of a giant elliptical galaxy and its spiral companion. The pairs are very similar from the optical and dynamical point of view, but have very different X-ray properties. The faint galaxy population around the pairs was observed with VIMOS on the VLT. These observations show that the presence of extended diffuse X-ray emission from an IGM is not necessarily connected to the presence of a numerous faint galaxy population. The study of luminosity functions (LFs) indicate that our X-ray luminous pairs are more dynamically evolved than a sample of poor groups with comparable X-ray luminosities from the literature. However, our X-ray faint pairs resemble the LF of those X-ray bright groups and may represent a phase in the dynamical evolution of these groups, where the recent or ongoing interaction, in which the pair E is involved, has destroyed or at least decreased the luminosity of the IGM. The X-ray faint groups' LF is also consitent with their evolution into a fossil group.

The nature of ionized gas in early-type galaxies

We present a study of the ionized gas in a sample of 65 nearby early-type galaxies, for which we have acquired optical intermediate-resolution spectra. Emission lines are detected in ~89 % of the sample. The incidence of emission appears independent from the E or S0 morphological classes. According to classical diagnostic diagrams, the majority of the galaxies are LINERs. However, the galaxies tend to move toward the "Composites" region (at lower [NII]/Halpha values) as the emission lines are measured at larger galacto-centric distances. This suggests that different ionization mechanisms may be at work in LINERs.

Young stellar populations and star clusters in NGC 1705

(Abridged). We present HST photometry of the late-type dwarf galaxy NGC 1705 observed with the WFPC2 in the U and B bands, and with the ACS/HRC in the U, V, and I bands. We cross-correlate these data with previous ones acquired with the WFPC2 in V and I and derive multiband Color-Magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the cross-identified individual stars and candidate star clusters. For the central regions of the galaxy, where HST-NICMOS J and H photometry is also available, we present U, B, V, I, J, H CMDs of the 256 objects with magnitudes measured in all bands. While our previous study based on V, I, J and H data allowed us to trace the star formation history of NGC 1705 back to a Hubble time, the new data provide a better insight on its recent evolution. With the method of the synthetic CMDs, we confirm the presence of two strong bursts of star formation (SF). The older of the two bursts (B1) occurred between ~ 10 and 15 Myr ago, while the younger burst (B2) started ~ 3 Myr ago, and it is still active. The stellar mass produced by B2 amounts to ~ 10^6 msun, and it is a factor of ~ 3 lower for B1. The interburst phase was likely characterized by a much lower level of SF rather than by its complete cessation. The two bursts show distinct spatial distributions: while B1 is centrally concentrated, B2 is more diffused, and presents ring and arc-like structures that remind of an expanding shell. This suggests a feedback mechanism, in which the expanding superbubble observed in NGC 1705, likely generated by the (10-15) Myr burst, triggered the current strong SF activity. From the HRC data, we identified 12 star clusters (plus the SSC) in the central region of NGC 1705, 10 of which have photometry in all the UBVIJH bands. Using the GALEV models, we derived ages from ~ 10 Myr to ~ 1 Gyr, and masses between ~ 10^4 and 10^5 msun for the clusters.

Starbursts in the Local Universe: new HST/ACS observations of the irregular galaxy NGC 4449

We present photometry with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of stars in the Magellanic starburst galaxy NGC 4449. The galaxy has been imaged in the F435W (B), F555W (V) and F814W (I) broad-band filters, and in the F658N (Halpha) narrow-band filter. Our photometry includes ~300,000 objects in the (B, V) color-magnitude diagram (CMD) down to V < 28, and ~400,000 objects in the (V, I) CMD, down to I < 27 . A subsample of ~200,000 stars has been photometrized in all the three bands simultaneously. The features observed in the CMDs imply a variety of stellar ages up to at least 1 Gyr, and possibly as old as a Hubble time. The spatial variation of the CMD morphology and of the red giant branch colors point toward the presence of an age gradient: young and intermediate-age stars tend to be concentrated toward the galactic center, while old stars are present everywhere. The spatial variation in the average luminosity of carbon stars suggests that there is not a strong metallicity gradient (< 0.2 dex). Also, we detect an interesting resolved star cluster on the West side of the galaxy, surrounded by a symmetric tidal or spiral feature consisting of young stars. The positions of the stars in NGC 4449 younger than 10 Myr are strongly correlated with the Halpha emission. We derive the distance of NGC 4449 from the tip of the red giant branch to be D=3.82 \pm 0.27 Mpc. This result is in agreement with the distance that we derive from the luminosity of the carbon stars.

I Zw 18 revisited with HST/ACS and Cepheids: New Distance and Age

We present new V and I-band HST/ACS photometry of I Zw 18, the most metal-poor blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy in the nearby universe. It has been argued in the past that I Zw 18 is a very young system that started forming stars only < 500 Myr ago, but other work has hinted that older (> 1 Gyr) red giant branch (RGB) stars may also exist. Our new data, once combined with archival HST/ACS data, provide a deep and uncontaminated optical color-magnitude diagram (CMD) that now strongly indicates an RGB. The RGB tip (TRGB) magnitude yields a distance modulus (m-M)_0 = 31.30 +/- 0.17, i.e., D = 18.2 +/- 1.5 Mpc. The time-series nature of our observations allows us to also detect and characterize for the first time three classical Cepheids in I~Zw~18. The time-averaged Cepheid and magnitudes are compared to the VI reddening-free Wesenheit relation predicted from new non-linear pulsation models specifically calculated at the metallicity of I Zw 18. For the one bona-fide classical Cepheid with a period of 8.63 days this implies a distance modulus (m-M)_0 = 31.42 +/- 0.26. The other two Cepheids have unusually long periods (125.0 and 129.8 d) but are consistent with this distance. The coherent picture that emerges is that I Zw 18 is older and farther away than previously believed. This rules out the possibility that I Zw 18 is a truly primordial galaxy formed recently (z < 0.1) in the local universe.

Very metal poor Classical Cepheids: variables in IZw18

In the framework of an ongoing ACS@HST project (HST program #10586, PI: Aloisi) we have obtained deep multi-color imaging of the very metal-poor Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy IZw18. The data were acquired in time-series fashion to allow the identification of Classical Cepheids (CCs). The main aim of this project is to constrain both the distance and the Star Formation History of the galaxy. However, as a byproduct these data also provide new insights into the properties of CCs at very low metallicities. We have identified 24 candidate CCs in IZw18. New theoretical pulsation models of CCs specifically for the low metallicity of this primordial galaxy (Z=0.0004, Y=0.24) have been computed to interpret our results.

Nearby early-type galaxies with ionized gas. III. Analysis of line-strength indices with new stellar population models

In this paper we study the underlying stellar population of a sample of 65 nearby early-type galaxies predominantly located in low density environments. Ages, metallicities and [alpha/Fe] ratios have been derived through the comparison of Lick indices measured at different galacto-centric distances with new SSP models which account for the presence of alpha/Fe enhancement. The SSPs cover a wide range of ages, metallicities and [alpha/Fe] ratios. To derive the stellar population parameters we have devised an algorithm based on the probability density function. We derive a large spread in age ((1-15) Gyrs). Age does not show any significant trend with central velocity dispersion sigma_c but E galaxies appear on average older than S0. On the contrary, an increasing trend of metallicity and [alpha/Fe] with sigma_c is observed, testifying that the chemical enrichment was more efficient and the duration of the star formation shorter in more massive galaxies. We have also sought for possible correlations with the local galaxy density but neither metallicity nor alpha-enhancement show clear trends. However we find that while low density environments (LDE) contain very young objects (from 1 to 4 Gyr), none of the galaxies in the higher density environments (HDE) is younger than 5 Gyrs. Considering the lack of environmental effect on the [alpha/Fe] ratio and the high value of [alpha/Fe] in some young massive objects, we argue that young galaxies in LDE are more likely due to recent rejuvenation episodes. By comparing the number of rejuvenated objects with the total number of galaxies in our sample, and by means of simple two-SSP component models, we estimate that, on average, the rejuvenation episodes do not involve more than 25 % of the total galaxy mass.

Stellar Populations in Field Early-Type Galaxies

We have acquired intermediate resolution spectra in the 3700-7000 A wavelength range for a sample of 65 early-type galaxies predominantly located in low density environments, a large fraction of which show emission lines. The spectral coverage and the high quality of the spectra allowed us to derive Lick line-strength indices and to study their behavior at different galacto-centric distances. Ages, metallicities and element abundance ratios have been derived for the galaxy sample by comparison of the line-strength index data set with our new developed Simple Stellar Population (SSP) models. We have analyzed the behavior of the derived stellar population parameters with the central galaxy velocity dispersion and the local galaxy density in order to understand the role played by mass and environment on the evolution of early-type galaxies. We find that the chemical path is mainly driven by the halo mass, more massive galaxies exhibiting the more efficient chemical enrichment and shorter star formation timescales. Galaxies in denser environments are on average older than galaxies in less dense environments. The last ones show a large age spread which is likely to be due to rejuvenation episodes.

A New Deep HST/ACS CMD of I Zw 18: Evidence for Red Giant Branch Stars

We present results from new deep HST/ACS photometry of I Zw 18, the most metal-poor blue compact dwarf galaxy in the nearby universe. It has been previously argued that this is a very young system that started forming stars only < 500 Myr ago, but other work has hinted that older (> 1 Gyr) red giant branch (RGB) stars may exist in this galaxy. Our deeper data indeed reveal evidence for an RGB. Underlying old (> 1 Gyr) populations are therefore present in even the most metal-poor systems, implying that star formation started at z > 0.1. The RGB tip (TRGB) magnitude and the properties of Cepheid variables identified from our program indicate that I Zw 18 is farther away (D = 19.0 +/- 1.8 Mpc) than previously believed.

The star formation history of early-type galaxies as a function of mass and environment

Using the third data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) we have rigorously defined a volume limited sample of early-type galaxies in the redshift range z < 0.1. We have defined the density of the local environment for each galaxy using a method which takes account of the redshift bias introduced by survey boundaries if traditional methods are used. At luminosities greater than our absolute r-band magnitude cutoff of -20.45 the mean density of environment shows no trend with redshift. We calculate the Lick indices for the entire sample and correct for aperture effects and velocity dispersion in a model independent way. Although we find no dependence of redshift or luminosity with environment we do find that the mean velocity dispersion, sigma, of early-type galaxies in dense environments tends to be higher than in low density environments. Taking account of this effect we find that several indices show small but very significant trends with environment that are not the result of the correlation between indices and velocity dispersion. The statistical significance of the data is sufficiently high to reveal that models accounting only for alpha-enhancement struggle to produce a consistent picture of age and metallicity of the sample galaxies, whereas a model that also includes carbon enhancement fares much better. We find that early-type galaxies in the field are younger than those in environments typical of clusters but that neither metallicity, alpha-enhancement nor carbon enhancement are influenced by the environment. The youngest early-type galaxies in both field and cluster environments are those with the lowest sigma. However, there is some evidence that the objects with the largest sigma are slightly younger, especially in denser environments.

Optical properties of the NGC 5328 group of galaxies

We present the results of a photometric and spectroscopic study of seven members of the NGC 5328 group of galaxies, a chain of galaxies spanning over 200 kpc (H_0 = 70 km/s/Mpc). We analyze the galaxy structure and study the emission line properties of the group members looking for signatures of star formation and AGN activity. We finally attempt to infer, from the modeling of line-strength indices, the stellar population ages of the early-type members. We investigate also the presence of a dwarf galaxy population associated with the bright members. The group is composed of a large fraction of early-type galaxies including NGC 5328 and NGC 5330, two bona fide ellipticals at the center of the group. In both galaxies no recent star formation episodes are detected by the H_beta vs. MgFe indices of these galaxies. 2MASX J13524838-2829584 has extremely boxy isophotes which are believed to be connected to a merging event: line strength indices suggest that this object probably had a recent star formation episode. A warped disc component emerges from the model subtracted image of 2MASX J13530016-2827061 which is interpreted as a signature of an ongoing interaction with the rest of the group. Ongoing star formation and nuclear activity is present in the projected outskirts of the group. The two early-type galaxies 2MASX J13523852-2830444 and 2MASX J13525393-2831421 show spectral signatures of star formation, while a Seyfert 2 type nuclear activity is detected in MCG -5-33-29.

Nearby early-type galaxies with ionized gas.II. Line-strength indices for 18 additional galaxies

Rampazzo et al. 2005 (Paper I) presented a data-set of line-strength indices for 50 early-type galaxies in the nearby Universe. The galaxy sample is biased toward galaxies showing emission lines, located in environments corresponding to a broad range of local galaxy densities, although predominantly in low density environments. The present addendum to Paper I enlarges the above data-set of line-strength indices by analyzing 18 additional early-type galaxies (three galaxies, namely NGC 3607, NGC 5077 and NGC 5898 have been already presented in the previous set). As in Paper I, we measured 25 line-strength indices, defined by the Lick IDS "standard" system (Trager et al. 1998; Worthey & Ottaviani 1997), for 7 luminosity weighted apertures and 4 gradients of each galaxy. This paper presents the line-strength data-set and compares it with the available data in the literature.

Nearby early-type galaxies with ionized gas. Characterization of the underlying stellar population

We present a preliminary analysis of the sample of early type galaxies of Rampazzo et al. (2005), selected to build a data-set of spectral properties of well studied early-type galaxies showing emission lines. Because of the presence of emission lines, the sample is biased toward objects that might be expected to have ongoing and recent star formation. We have compared the line-strength indices presented in Rampazzo et al. (2005) with Simple Stellar Populations (SSPs) in order to characterize the underlying stellar population of the galaxies. We have derived ages, metallicities and [alpha/Fe] ratios. The positive trend of the sigma-metallicity and sigma-[alpha/Fe] relations is reproduced. The bulk of the galaxies span a range in metallicity from ~ solar to ~ twice solar and a range in [alpha/Fe] from ~0.2 to ~0.4. Furthermore the comparison of the derived parameters at different galactocentric distances shows the presence of negative metallicity gradients from the center outwards.

Nearby early-type galaxies with ionized gas.I. Line-strength indices of the underlying stellar population

With the aim of building a data-set of spectral properties of well studied early-type galaxies showing emission lines, we present intermediate resolution spectra of 50 galaxies in the nearby Universe. The sample, which covers several of the E and S0 morphological sub-classes, is biased toward objects that might be expected to have ongoing and recent star formation, at least in small amounts, because of the presence of the emission lines. The emission are expected to come from the combination of active galactic nuclei and star formation regions within the galaxies. Sample galaxies are located in environments corresponding to a broad range of local galaxy densities, although predominantly in low density environments. Our long-slit spectra cover the 3700 - 7250 A wavelength range with a spectral resolution of about 7.6 A at 5550 A. The specific aim of this paper, and our first step on the investigation, is to map the underlying galaxy stellar population by measuring, along the slit, positioned along the galaxy major axis, line--strength indices at several, homogeneous galacto-centric distances. For each object we extracted 7 luminosity weighted apertures corrected for the galaxy ellipticity and 4 gradients and we measured 25 line-strength indices. The paper introduces the sample, presents the observations, describes the data reduction procedures, the extraction of apertures and gradients, the determination and correction of the line--strength indices, the procedure adopted to transform them into the Lick-IDS System and the procedures adopted for the emission correction. We finally discuss the comparisons between our dataset and line-strength indices available in the literature.

The Star Formation History of NGC 1705: a Post-Starburst Galaxy on the Verge of Activity

We infer the star formation history in different regions of the blue compact dwarf NGC 1705 by comparing synthetic color-magnitude diagrams with HST optical and near-infrared photometry. We find that NGC 1705 is not a young galaxy because its star formation commenced at least 5 Gyr ago. On the other hand, we confirm the existence of a recent burst of star formation between 15 and 10 Myr ago. We also find evidence for new strong activity, which started 3 Myr ago and is still continuing. The old population is spread across the entire galaxy, while the young and intermediate stars are more concentrated in the central regions. We derive an almost continuous star formation with variable rate, and exclude the presence of long quiescent phases between the episodes during the last ~1 Gyr. The central regions experienced an episode of star formation of \~0.07 Msun/yr (for a Salpeter initial mass function [IMF]) 15 to 10 Myr ago. This coincides with the strong activity in the central super star cluster. We find a rate of ~0.3 Msun/yr for the youngest ongoing burst which started ~3 Myr ago. This is higher than in other dwarfs and comparable to the rate of NGC 1569. The star formation rate of earlier episodes is not especially high and falls in the range 10^{-3}-10^{-1} Msun/yr. The IMF is close to the Salpeter value or slightly steeper.

Star formation histories of late-type dwarfs outside the Local Group

We describe the star formation histories of three late-type dwarfs located outside the Local Group: IZw18, NGC1569 and NGC1705. The results are based on the application of the method of synthetic colour-magnitude diagrams to deep HST photometric data. All the examined galaxies were already forming stars at the reached lookback time and show no evidence of long quiescent phases. The obtained scenarios are quite similar to those derived for other galaxies of this morphological type, both inside and outside the Local Group.

The Coimbra Experiment: Report from Group 12

We describe the approach adopted by our group to derive the star formation history (SFH) of the chosen LMC field, as part of the experiment to compare the predictions obtained by different groups with the synthetic Colour-Magnitude diagram method. We point out what are the evolutionary characteristics of the observed stellar populations, and present the SFH scenario which appears to better account for them. We emphasize the importance of adopting a {\it critical} approach when dealing with this method.
