The alpha-gamma transition of Cerium is entropy-driven

We emphasize, on the basis of experimental data and theoretical calculations, that the entropic stabilization of the gamma-phase is the main driving force of the alpha-gamma transition of cerium in a wide temperature range below the critical point. Using a formulation of the total energy as a functional of the local density and of the f-orbital local Green's functions, we perform dynamical mean-field theory calculations within a new implementation based on the multiple LMTO method, which allows to include semi-core states. Our results are consistent with the experimental energy differences and with the qualitative picture of an entropy-driven transition, while also confirming the appearance of a stabilization energy of the alpha phase as the quasiparticle Kondo resonance develops.

Frequency-dependent local interactions and low-energy effective models from electronic structure calculations

We propose a systematic procedure for constructing effective models of strongly correlated materials. The parameters, in particular the on-site screened Coulomb interaction U, are calculated from first principles, using the GW approximation. We derive an expression for the frequency-dependent U and show that its high frequency part has significant influence on the spectral functions. We propose a scheme for taking into account the energy dependence of U, so that a model with an energy-independent local interaction can still be used for low-energy properties.

First principles approach to the electronic structure of strongly correlated systems: combining GW and DMFT

We propose a dynamical mean field approach for calculating the electronic structure of strongly correlated materials from first principles. The scheme combines the GW method with dynamical mean field theory, which enables one to treat strong interaction effects. It avoids the conceptual problems inherent to conventional ``LDA+DMFT'', such as Hubbard interaction parameters and double counting terms. We apply a simplified version of the approach to the electronic structure of nickel and find encouraging results.

Band- and k-dependent Self-Energy Effects in the Unoccupied and Occupied Quasiparticle Band Structure of Cu

Excited-state self-energy effects in the electronic structure of Cu, a prototype weakly correlated system containing states with different degrees of localization, are investigated with emphasis on the unoccupied states up to 40 eV above the Fermi level. The analysis employs the experimental quasiparticle states mapped under full control of the 3-dimensional wavevector k using very-low energy electron diffraction for the unoccupied states and photoemission for the occupied states. The self-energy corrections to the density-functional theory show a distinct band- and k-dependence. This is supported by quasiparticle GW calculations performed within the framework of linearized muffin-tin orbitals. Our results suggest however that the GW approximation may be less accurate in the localized d-bands of Cu with their short-range charge fluctuations. We identify a connection of the self-energy behavior with the spatial localization of the one-electron wavefunctions in the unit cell and with their behavior in the core region. Mechanisms of this connection are discussed based on the local-density picture and on the non-local exchange interaction with the valence states.

The GW method

Calculations of ground-state and excited-state properties of materials have been one of the major goals of condensed matter physics. Ground-state properties of solids have been extensively investigated for several decades within the standard density functional theory. Excited state properties, on the other hand, were relatively unexplored in ab initio calculations until a decade ago. The most suitable approach up to now for studying excited-state properties of extended systems is the Green function method. To calculate the Green function one requires the self-energy operator which is non-local and energy dependent. In this article we describe the GW approximation which has turned out to be a fruitful approximation to the self-energy. The Green function theory, numerical methods for carrying out the self-energy calculations, simplified schemes, and applications to various systems are described. Self-consistency issue and new developments beyond the GW approximation are also discussed as well as the success and shortcomings of the GW approximation.

Pauli susceptibility of A3C60 (A=K, Rb)

The Pauli paramagnetic susceptibility of A3C60 (A= K, Rb) compounds is calculated. A lattice quantum Monte Carlo method is applied to a multi-band Hubbard model, including the on-site Coulomb interaction U. It is found that the many-body enhancement of the susceptibility is of the order of a factor of three. This reconciles estimates of the density of states from the susceptibility with other estimates. The enhancement is an example of a substantial many-body effect in the doped fullerenes.
