Unified worldline treatment of Yukawa and axial couplings

We provide a worldline representation of the one-loop effective action for a Dirac particle coupled to external scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axialvector fields. Extending previous work by two of the authors on the pure vector-axialvector case to all four couplings, it allows one to treat the real and the imaginary parts of the effective action in a unified manner, at the price of having a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Unlike existing worldline representations, our new worldline action contains terms with an odd number of Grassmann fields, leading to ordering problems that in the worldline formalism are usually encountered only in curved space. Drawing on the highly developed technology for worldline path-integrals in gravity, we employ the Time Slicing regularisation of the path integral which comes about with a specific ``counterterm Lagrangian'', which we calculate once and for all and non-perturbatively, to provide unambiguous rules to treat products of distributions occurring in some diagrams of the one-dimensional worldline theory. We then employ the usual worldline machinery to lay out the rules for the calculation of the effective action itself as well as the corresponding one-loop amplitudes. We test the formalism on the calculation of various heat-kernel coefficients, self energies and scattering amplitudes, including the Higgs decay into two photons or gluons and the PCAC relation. In all cases we find perfect agreement with more established approaches.

On Fano schemes of linear spaces of general complete intersections

We consider the Fano scheme $F_k(X)$ of $k$--dimensional linear subspaces contained in a complete intersection $X \subset \mathbb{P}^n$ of multi--degree $\underline{d} = (d_1, \ldots, d_s)$. Our main result is an extension of a result of Riedl and Yang concerning Fano schemes of lines on very general hypersurfaces: we consider the case when $X$ is a very general complete intersection and $Π_{i=1}^s d_i > 2$ and we find conditions on $n$, $\underline{d}$ and $k$ under which $F_k(X)$ does not contain either rational or elliptic curves. At the end of the paper, we study the case $Π_{i=1}^s d_i = 2$.

Reducible contributions to the propagator and EHL in background fields

We briefly discuss the recent discovery of reducible contributions to QED effective actions due to the presence of external electromagnetic fields at tree level and higher loop-order. We classify the physical effects of these contributions for various field configurations and discuss the strong field asymptotic limit.

Integral representations combining ladders and crossed-ladders

We use the worldline formalism to derive integral representations for three classes of amplitudes in scalar field theory: (i) the scalar propagator exchanging N momenta with a scalar background field (ii) the "half-ladder" with N rungs in x - space (iii) the four-point ladder with N rungs in x - space as well as in (off-shell) momentum space. In each case we give a compact expression combining the N! Feynman diagrams contributing to the amplitude. As our main application, we reconsider the well-known case of two massive scalars interacting through the exchange of a massless scalar. Applying asymptotic estimates and a saddle-point approximation to the N-rung ladder plus crossed ladder diagrams, we derive a semi-analytic approximation formula for the lowest bound state mass in this model.

On the low energy limit of one loop photon-graviton amplitudes

We present first results of a systematic study of the structure of the low energy limit of the one-loop photon-graviton amplitudes induced by massive scalars and spinors. Our main objective is the search of KLT-type relations where effectively two photons merge into a graviton. We find such a relation at the graviton-photon-photon level. We also derive the diffeomorphism Ward identity for the 1PI one graviton - N photon amplitudes.

Photon-Graviton Amplitudes from the Effective Action

We report on the status of an ongoing effort to calculate the complete one-loop low-energy effective actions in Einstein-Maxwell theory with a massive scalar or spinor loop, and to use them for obtaining the explicit form of the corresponding M-graviton/N-photon amplitudes. We present explicit results for the effective actions at the one-graviton four-photon level, and for the amplitudes at the one-graviton two-photon level. As expected on general grounds, these amplitudes relate in a simple way to the corresponding four-photon amplitudes. We also derive the gravitational Ward identity for the 1PI one-graviton -- N photon amplitude.

Worldline Approach to QFT on Manifolds with Boundary

We use the image charge method to compute the trace of the heat kernel for a scalar field on a flat manifold with boundary, representing the trace by means of a worldline path integral and obtain useful non-iterative master formulae for n insertions of the scalar potential. We discuss possible extensions of the method.

Detours and Paths: BRST Complexes and Worldline Formalism

We construct detour complexes from the BRST quantization of worldline diffeomorphism invariant systems. This yields a method to efficiently extract physical quantum field theories from particle models with first class constraint algebras. As an example, we show how to obtain the Maxwell detour complex by gauging N=2 supersymmetric quantum mechanics in curved space. Then we concentrate on first class algebras belonging to a class of recently introduced orthosymplectic quantum mechanical models and give generating functions for detour complexes describing higher spins of arbitrary symmetry types. The first quantized approach facilitates quantum calculations and we employ it to compute the number of physical degrees of freedom associated to the second quantized, field theoretical actions.

Photon-graviton mixing in an electromagnetic field

Einstein-Maxwell theory implies the mixing of photons with gravitons in an external electromagnetic field. This process and its possible observable consequences have been studied at tree level for many years. We use the worldline formalism for obtaining an exact integral representation for the one-loop corrections to this amplitude due to scalars and fermions. We study the structure of this amplitude, and obtain exact expressions for various limiting cases.

One loop photon-graviton mixing in an electromagnetic field: Part 2

In part 1 of this series compact integral representations had been obtained for the one-loop photon-graviton amplitude involving a charged spin 0 or spin 1/2 particle in the loop and an arbitrary constant electromagnetic field. In this sequel, we study the structure and magnitude of the various polarization components of this amplitude on-shell. Explicit expressions are obtained for a number of limiting cases.

Dimensional regularization of nonlinear sigma models on a finite time interval

We extend dimensional regularization to the case of compact spaces. Contrary to previous regularization schemes employed for nonlinear sigma models on a finite time interval (``quantum mechanical path integrals in curved space'') dimensional regularization requires only a covariant finite two-loop counterterm. This counterterm is nonvanishing and given by R/8.

Consistency conditions and trace anomalies in six dimensions

Conformally invariant quantum field theories develop trace anomalies when defined on curved backgrounds. We study again the problem of identifying all possible trace anomalies in d=6 by studying the consistency conditions to derive their 10 independent solutions. It is known that only 4 of these solutions represent true anomalies, classified as one type A anomaly, given by the topological Euler density, and three type B anomalies, made up by three independent Weyl invariants. However, we also present the explicit expressions of the remaining 6 trivial anomalies, namely those that can be obtained by the Weyl variation of local functionals. The knowledge of the latter is in general necessary to disentangle the universal coefficients of the type A and B anomalies from calculations performed on concrete models.

Dimensional regularization of the path integral in curved space on an infinite time interval

We use dimensional regularization to evaluate quantum mechanical path integrals in arbitrary curved spaces on an infinite time interval. We perform 3-loop calculations in Riemann normal coordinates, and 2-loop calculations in general coordinates. It is shown that one only needs a covariant two-loop counterterm (V_{DR} = R/8) to obtain the same results as obtained earlier in other regularization schemes. It is also shown that the mass term needed in order to avoid infrared divergences explicitly breaks general covariance in the final result.

Conformal anomaly of (2,0) tensor multiplet in six dimensions and AdS/CFT correspondence

We compute the conformal anomaly of free d=6 superconformal (2,0) tensor multiplet on generic curved background. Up to a trivial covariant total-derivative term, it is given by the sum of the type A part proportional to the 6-d Euler density, and the type B part containing three independent Weyl invariants. Multiplied by factor 4N^3, the type B part of the anomaly reproduces exactly the corresponding part of the conformal anomaly of large N multiple M5-brane (2,0) theory as predicted (hep-th/9806087) by the AdS/CFT correspondence. The coefficients of the type A anomaly differ by the factor 4/7 x 4 N^3, so that the free tensor multiplet anomaly does not vanish on a Ricci-flat background. The coefficient 4N^3 is the same as found (hep-th/9703040) in the comparison of the tensor multiplet theory and the d=11 supergravity results for the absorption cross-sections of gravitons by M5 branes, and in the comparison (hep-th/9911135) of 2- and 3-point stress tensor correlators of the free tensor multiplet with the AdS_7 supergravity predictions. The reason for this coincidence is that the three Weyl-invariant terms in the anomaly are related to the $h^2$ and $h^3$ terms in the near flat space expansion of the corresponding non-local effective action, and thus to the 2-point and 3-point stress tensor correlators in flat background. At the same time, the type A anomaly is related to the $h^4$ term in the non-local part of the effective action, i.e. to a certain structure in the 4-point correlation function of stress tensors.

Three-point correlators of stress tensors in maximally-supersymmetric conformal theories in d=3 and d=6

We consider free superconformal theories of n=8 scalar multiplet in d=3 and (2,0) tensor multiplet in d=6 and compute 2-point and 3-point correlators of their stress tensors. The results for the 2-point and 3-point correlators for a single d=3 and d=6 multiplet differ from the "strong-coupling" AdS_4 and AdS_7 supergravity predictions by the factors $4\sqrt2 \over 3π}N^{3/2}$ and $4N^3$ respectively. These are the same factors as found earlier in hep-th/9703040 in the comparison of the brane free field theory and the 11-d supergravity predictions for the absorption cross-sections of longitudinally polarized gravitons by multiple M2 and M5 branes. While the correspondence of the results for the cross-sections and 2-point functions was expected on the basis of unitarity, the fact that the same coefficients appear in the ratio of the free-theory and supergravity 3-point functions is non-trivial. Thus, like in the d=4 SYM case, in both d=3 and d=6 theories the ratio of the 3-point and 2-point correlators / is exactly the same in the free field theory and in the interacting CFT as described (to leading order in large $N$) by the 11-d supergravity on AdS_{d+1} x S^{10-d}.
