Extreme Energy nu_tau Propagation Through the Earth

The propagation of extremely energetic nu_tau's through the Earth is studied by means of a detailed Monte Carlo simulation. All major mechanisms of nu_tau interactions and tau energy loss as well as all its relevant decay modes are properly taken into account. The detection possibility of nu_tau's emerging from Earth in forthcoming neutrino telescopes is addressed

Strangeness counting in high energy collisions

The estimates of overall strange quark production in high energy e+e-, pp and ppbar collisions by using the statistical-thermal model of hadronisation are presented and compared with previous works. The parametrization of strangeness suppression within the model is discussed. Interesting regularities emerge in the strange/non-strange produced quark ratio which turns out to be fairly constant in elementary collisions while it is twice as large in SPS heavy ion collision.

Canonical Strangeness Enhancement

According to recent experimental data and theoretical developments we discuss three distinct topics related to strangeness enhancement in nuclear reactions. We investigate the compatibility of multi-strange particle ratios measured in a restricted phase space with thermal model parameters extracted recently in 4pi. We study the canonical suppression as a possible reason for the observed strangeness enhancement and argue that a connection between QGP formation and the undersaturation of strangeness is not excluded.

Thermal hadron production in pp and p{\bar p} collisions

It is shown that the hadron production in high energy pp and p{\bar p} collisions, calculated by assuming that particles originate in hadron gas fireballs at thermal and partial chemical equilibrium, agrees very well with the data. The temperature of the hadron gas fireballs, determined by fitting hadron abundances, does not seem to depend on the centre of mass energy, having a nearly constant value of about 170 MeV. This value is in agreement with that obtained in e^+e^- collisions and supports a universal hadronization mechanism in all kinds of reactions consisting in a parton-hadron transition at critical values of temperature and pressure.

On Chemical Equilibrium in Nuclear Collisions

The data on average hadron multiplicities in central A+A collisions measured at CERN SPS are analysed with the ideal hadron gas model. It is shown that the full chemical equilibrium version of the model fails to describe the experimental results. The agreement of the data with the off-equilibrium version allowing for partial strangeness saturation is significantly better. The freeze-out temperature of about 180 MeV seems to be independent of the system size (from S+S to Pb+Pb) and in agreement with that extracted in e+e-, pp and p{\bar p} collisions. The strangeness suppression is discussed at both hadron and valence quark level. It is found that the hadronic strangeness saturation factor gamma_S increases from about 0.45 for pp interactions to about 0.7 for central A+A collisions with no significant change from S+S to Pb+Pb collisions. The quark strangeness suppression factor lambda_S is found to be about 0.2 for elementary collisions and about 0.4 for heavy ion collisions independently of collision energy and type of colliding system

Thermal hadron production in high energy collisions

It is shown that hadron abundances in high energy e+e-, pp and p{\bar p} collisions, calculated by assuming that particles originate in hadron gas fireballs at thermal and partial chemical equilibrium, are in very good agreement with the data. The freeze-out temperature of the hadron gas fireballs turns out to be nearly constant over a large center of mass energy range and not dependent on the initial colliding system. The only deviation from chemical equilibrium resides in the incomplete strangeness phase space saturation. Preliminary results of an analysis of hadron abundances in S+S and S+Ag heavy ion collisions are presented.

Universality of thermal hadron production in pp, p{\bar p} and e^+e^- collisions

It is shown that the hadron production in high energy pp, p{\bar p} and e^+e^- collisions, calculated by assuming that particles originate in hadron gas fireballs at thermal and partial chemical equilibrium, agrees very well with the data. The temperature of the hadron gas fireballs, determined by fitting hadron abundances, does not seem to depend on the centre of mass energy and kind of reaction, having a nearly constant value of about 170 MeV. This finding supports a universal hadronization mechanism in all kinds of reactions consisting in a parton-hadron transition at critical values of temperature and pressure.

A thermodynamical model of hadron production in $e^+e^-$ collisions

The hadron production in $e^+e^-$ collisions is studied assuming that particles originate in a hadron gas at thermal and chemical equilibrium. The parameters of the hadron gas are determined with a fit to the average multiplicities of various hadron species measured at LEP and PEP-PETRA colliders. An impressive agreement is found between the predictions of this model and data for almost all particles over a range of production rate of four orders of magnitude. The temperature values found at the centre of mass energies of LEP and PEP-PETRA are around $165$ MeV.

Multiplicity distributions in a thermodynamical model of hadron production in $e^+e^-$ collisions

Predictions of a thermodynamical model of hadron production for multiplicity distributions in $e^+e^-$ annihilations at LEP and PEP-PETRA centre of mass energies are shown. The production process is described as a two-step process in which primary hadrons emitted from the thermal source decay into final observable particles. The final charged tracks multiplicity distributions turn out to be of Negative Binomial type and are in quite good agreement with experimental observations. The average number of clans calculated from fitted Negative Binomial coincides with the average number of primary hadrons predicted by the thermodynamical model, suggesting that clans should be identified with primary hadrons.
