Common effect of chemical and external pressures on the magnetic properties of RECoPO (RE = La, Pr)

We report a detailed investigation of RECoPO (RE = La, Pr) and LaCoAsO materials performed by means of muon spin spectroscopy. Zero-field measurements show that the electrons localized on the Pr$^{3+}$ ions do not play any role in the static magnetic properties of the compounds. Magnetism at the local level is indeed fully dominated by the weakly-itinerant ferromagnetism from the Co sublattice only. The increase of the chemical pressure triggered by the different ionic radii of La$^{3+}$ and Pr$^{3+}$, on the other hand, plays a crucial role in enhancing the value of the magnetic critical temperature and can be mimicked by the application of external hydrostatic pressure up to 24 kbar. A sharp discontinuity in the local magnetic field at the muon site in LaCoPO at around 5 kbar suggests a sizeable modification in the band structure of the material upon increasing pressure. This scenario is qualitatively supported by \emph{ab-initio} density-functional theory calculations.

Universal conductivity and the electrodynamics of graphite at high pressures

We address the in-plane pressure-dependent electrodynamics of graphite through synchrotron based infrared spectroscopy and ab initio Density Functional Theory calculations. The Drude term remarkably increases upon pressure application, as a consequence of an enhancement of both electron and hole charge densities. This is due to the growth of the band dispersion along the k_z direction between the K and H points of the Brillouin zone. On the other hand, the mid-infrared optical conductivity between 800 and 5000 cm-1 is almost flat, and very weakly pressure dependent, at least up to 7 GPa. This demonstrates a surprising robustness of the graphene-like universal quantum conductance of graphite, even when the interlayer distance is significantly reduced.

Characterization of new hard X-ray Cataclysmic Variables

We aim at characterizing a sample of 9 new hard X-ray selected Cataclysmic Variable (CVs), to unambiguously identify them as magnetic systems of the Intermediate Polar (IP) type. We performed timing and spectral analysis by using X-ray, and simultaneous UV and optical data collected by XMM-Newton, complemented with hard X-ray data provided by INTEGRAL and Swift. The pulse arrival time were used to estimate the orbital periods. The X-ray spectra were fitted using composite models consisting of different absorbing columns and emission components. Strong X-ray pulses at the White Dwarf (WD) spin period are detected and found to decrease with energy. Most sources are spin-dominated systems in the X-rays, though four are beat dominated at optical wavelengths. We estimated the orbital period in all system (except for IGR J16500-3307), providing the first estimate for IGR J08390-4833, IGR J18308-1232, and IGR J18173-2509. All X-ray spectra are multi-temperature. V2069 Cyg and RX J0636+3535 posses a soft X-ray optically thick component at kT 80 eV. An intense K_alpha Fe line at 6.4 keV is detected in all sources. An absorption edge at 0.76 keV from OVII is detected in IGR J08390-4833. The WD masses and lower limits to the accretion rates are estimated. We found all sources to be IPs. IGR J08390-4833, V2069 Cyg, and IGR J16500-3307 are pure disc accretors, while IGR J18308-1232, IGR J1509-6649, IGR J17195-4100, and RX J0636+3535 display a disc-overflow accretion mode. All sources show a temperature gradient in the post-shock regions and a highly absorbed emission from material located in the pre-shock flow which is also responsible for the X-ray pulsations. Reflection at the WD surface is likely the origin of the fluorescent iron line. There is an increasing evidence for the presence of a warm absorber in IPs. The addition of 2 systems to the subgroup of soft X-ray IPs confirms a \sim 30% incidence.

Magnetotransport in La(Fe,Ru)AsO as a probe of band structure and mobility

In this work we investigate the Ru substituted LaFeAsO compound, by studying the magnetotransport behaviour and its relationship with the band structure, in different regimes of temperature, magnetic field and Ru content. In particular we analyse the magnetoresistance of LaFe1-xRuxAsO (0 <= x <= 0.6) samples with the support of ab initio calculations and we find out that in the whole series: (i) the transport is dominated by electron bands only; (ii) the magnetoresistance exhibits distinctive features related to the presence of Dirac cones; indeed, ab initio calculations confirm the presence of anisotropic Dirac cones in the band structure; (iii) the low temperature mobility is exceptionally high and reaches 18.6 m2/(Vs) in the Ru-free sample at T=2K, in the extreme limit of a single Landau level occupied in the Dirac cones; (iv) the mobility drops abruptly above 10K-15K; (v) the disorder has a very weak effect on the band mobilities and on the transport properties; (vi) there exists a correlation between the temperature ranges of Dirac cones and SDW carrier condensation. These findings may be of crucial importance in the investigation of the pairing mechanism in the F-doped superconducting La(Fe,Ru)As(O,F) compounds related to this series of parent compounds.

Multi-instrument X-ray monitoring of the January 2009 outburst from the recurrent magnetar candidate 1E 1547.0-5408

With two consecutive outbursts recorded in four months (October 2008 and January 2009), and a possible third outburst in 2007, 1E 1547.0-5408 is one of the most active transient anomalous X-ray pulsars known so far. Thanks to extensive X-ray observations, obtained both in the quiescent and active states, 1E 1547.0-5408 represents a very promising laboratory to get insights into the outburst properties and magnetar emission mechanisms. We performed a detailed timing and spectral analysis of four Chandra, three INTEGRAL, and one XMM observations collected over a two week interval after the outburst onset in January 2009. Several Swift pointings, covering a 1.5 year interval, were also analyzed in order to monitor the decay of the X-ray flux. We compare the characteristics of the two outbursts, as well as those of the active and quiescent states. We also discuss the long-term X-ray flux history of 1E 1547.0-5408 since its first detection in 1980, and show that the source displays three flux levels: low, intermediate and high.

Theoretical Investigation of Optical Conductivity in Ba [Fe(1-x)Co(x)]2 As2

We report on theoretical calculations of the optical conductivity of Ba [Fe(1-x)Co(x)]2 As2, as obtained from density functional theory within the full potential LAPW method. A thorough comparison with experiment shows that we are able to reproduce most of the observed experimental features, in particular a magnetic peak located at about 0.2 eV which we ascribe to antiferromagnetic ordered magnetic stripes. We also predict a large in-plane anisotropy of this feature, which agrees very well with measurements on detwinned crystals. The effect of Co doping as well as the dependence of plasma frequency on the magnetic order is also investigated.

Isoelectronic Ru substitution at Fe-site in Sm(Fe1-xRux)As(O0.85F0.15) compound and its effects on structural, superconducting and normal state properties

In this work we present a systematic experimental and theoretical study of the structural, transport and superconducting properties of Sm(Fe1-xRux)As(O0.85F0.15) polycrystalline samples as a function of Ru content (x) ranging from 0 to 1. The choice of Ru as isoelectronic substitution at Fe site of F-doped compounds allows to better clarify the role of structural disorder in modifying the normal and superconducting properties of these newly discovered multiband superconductors. Two different regions are identified: the Fe-rich phase (x<0.5) where superconducting and normal state properties are strongly affected by disorder induced by Ru substitution; the Ru-rich phase (x>0.5) where the system is metallic and strongly compensated and the presence of Ru frustrates the magnetic moment on Fe ions. Here the lack of magnetic features and related spin fluctuations may be the cause for the suppression of superconductivity.

Influence of Mg deficiency in MgB2 single crystals on crystal structure and superconducting properties

The effects of high-temperature vacuum-annealing induced Mg deficiency in MgB2 single crystals grown under high pressure were investigated. As the annealing temperature was increased from 800 to 975 C, the average Mg content in the MgB2 crystals systematically decreased, while Tc remains essentially unchanged and the superconducting transition slightly broadens from 0.55 K to 1.3 K. The reduction of the superconducting volume fraction was noticeable already after annealing at 875 C. Samples annealed at 975 C are partially decomposed and the Mg site occupancy is decreased to 0.92 from 0.98 in as-grown crystals. Annealing at 1000 C completely destroys superconductivity. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the main final product of decomposition is polycrystalline MgB4 and thus the decomposition reaction of MgB2 can be described as 2MgB2(s) = MgB4(s) + Mg(g). First-principles calculations of the Mg1-x(VMg)xB2 electronic structure, within the supercell approach, show a small downshift of the Fermi level. Holes induced by the vacancies go to both sigma and pi bands. These small modifications are not expected to influence Tc, in agreement with observations. The significant reduction of the superconducting volume fraction without noticeable Tc reduction indicates the coexistence, within the same crystal, of superconductive and non-superconductive electronic phases, associated with regions rich and poor in Mg vacancies.

Static and Dynamical Susceptibility of LaO1-xFxFeAs

The mechanism of superconductivity and magnetism and their possible interplay have recently been under debate in pnictides. A likely pairing mechanism includes an important role of spin fluctuations and can be expressed in terms of the magnetic susceptibility chi. The latter is therefore a key quantity in the determination of both the magnetic properties of the system in the normal state, and of the contribution of spin fluctuations to the pairing potential. A basic ingredient to obtain chi is the independent-electron susceptibility chi0. Using LaO1-xFxFeAs as a prototype material, in this report we present a detailed ab-initio study of chi0(q,omega), as a function of doping and of the internal atomic positions. The resulting static chi0(q,0) is consistent with both the observed M-point related magnetic stripe phase in the parent compound, and with the existence of incommensurate magnetic structures predicted by ab-initio calculations upon doping.

The dust-scattering X-ray rings of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 1E 1547.0-5408

On 2009 January 22 numerous strong bursts were detected from the anomalous X-ray pulsar 1E 1547.0-5408. Swift/XRT and XMM-Newton/EPIC observations carried out in the following two weeks led to the discovery of three X-ray rings centered on this source. The ring radii increased with time following the expansion law expected for a short impulse of X-rays scattered by three dust clouds. Assuming different models for the dust composition and grain size distribution, we fit the intensity decay of each ring as a function of time at different energies, obtaining tight constrains on the distance of the X-ray source. Although the distance strongly depends on the adopted dust model, we find that some models are incompatible with our X-ray data, restricting to 4-8 kpc the range of possible distances for 1E 1547.0-5408. The best-fitting dust model provides a source distance of 3.91 +/- 0.07 kpc, which is compatible with the proposed association with the supernova remnant G 327.24-0.13, and implies distances of 2.2 kpc, 2.6 kpc and 3.4 kpc for the dust clouds, in good agreement with the dust distribution inferred by CO line observations towards 1E 1547.0-5408. However, dust distances in agreement with CO data are also obtained for a set of similarly well-fitting models that imply a source distance of about 5 kpc. A distance of about 4-5 kpc is also favored by the fact that these dust models are already known to provide good fits to the dust-scattering halos of bright X-ray binaries.

Multi-band conductivity and multi-gap superconductivity in V3Si from optical measurements on films at terahertz frequencies

The possibility of multi-band conductivity and multi-gap superconductivity is explored in oriented V3Si thin films by means of reflectance and transmittance measurements at terahertz frequencies. The temperature dependence of the transmittance spectra in the normal state gives evidence of two bands contributing to the film conductivity. This outcome is consistent with electronic structure calculations performed within density functional theory. On this basis, we performed a detailed data analysis and found that all optical data can be consistently accounted for within a two-band framework, with the presence of two optical gaps in the superconducting state corresponding to 2D=kTc values close to 1.8 and 3.8.

The supergiant fast X-ray transient IGRJ18483-0311 in quiescence: XMM-Newton, Swift, and Chandra observations

IGR J18483-0311 was discovered with INTEGRAL in 2003 and later classified as a supergiant fast X-ray transient. It was observed in outburst many times, but its quiescent state is still poorly known. Here we present the results of XMM-Newton, Swift, and Chandra observations of IGRJ18483-0311. These data improved the X-ray position of the source, and provided new information on the timing and spectral properties of IGR J18483-0311 in quiescence. We report the detection of pulsations in the quiescent X-ray emission of this source, and give for the first time a measurement of the spin-period derivative of this source. In IGRJ18483-0311 the measured spin-period derivative of -(1.3+-0.3)x10^(-9) s/s likely results from light travel time effects in the binary. We compare the most recent observational results of IGRJ18483-0311 and SAXJ1818.6-1703, the two supergiant fast X-ray transients for which a similar orbital period has been measured.

Multiband superconductivity in Pb, H under pressure and CaBeSi from {\it ab-initio} calculations

Superconductivity in Pb, H under extreme pressure and CaBeSi, in the framework of the density functional theory for superconductors, is discussed. A detailed analysis on how the electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions combine together to determine the superconducting gap and critical temperature of these systems is presented. Pb, H under pressure and CaBeSi are multigap superconductors. We will address the question under which conditions does a system exhibits this phenomenon. The presented results contribute to the understanding of multiband and anisotropic superconductivity, which has received a lot of attention since the discovery of MgB$_2$, and show how it is possible to describe the superconducting properties of real materials on a fully {\it ab-initio} basis.

From outburst to quiescence: the decay of the transient Anomalous X-ray Pulsar XTE J1810-197

XTE J1810-197 is the first transient Anomalous X-ray Pulsar ever discovered. Its highly variable X-ray flux allowed us to study the timing and spectral emission properties of a magnetar candidate over a flux range of about two orders of magnitude. We analyzed nine XMM-Newton observations of XTE J1810-197 collected over a four years baseline (September 2003 - September 2007). EPIC PN and MOS data were reduced and used for detailed timing and spectral analysis. Pulse phase spectroscopic studies were also carried out for observations with sufficiently high signal to noise. We find that: (i) a three blackbodies model reproduces the spectral properties of the source over the entire outburst statistically better than the two blackbodies model previously used in the literature, (ii) the coldest blackbody is consistent with the thermal emission from the whole surface, and has temperature and radius similar to those inferred from ROSAT observations before the outburst onset, (iii) there is a spectral feature around 1.1 keV during six consecutive observations (since March 2005); if due to proton resonant cyclotron scattering, it would imply a magnetic field of around 2E14 G. This is in a very good agreement with the value from the spin period measurements.

Role of Coulomb interaction in the superconducting properties of CaC6 and H under pressure

Superconductivity in intercalated graphite CaC6 and H under extreme pressure, in the framework of superconducting density functional theory, is discussed. A detailed analysis on how the electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions combine together to determine the superconducting gap and critical temperature of these systems is presented. In particular, we discuss the effect on the calculated Tc of the anisotropy of the electron-phonon interaction and of the different approximations for screening the Coulomb repulsion. These results contribute to the understanding of multigap and anisotropic superconductivity, which has received a lot of attention since the discovery of MgB2, and show how it is possible to describe the superconducting properties of real materials on a fully ab-initio basis.

The effect of magnetic impurities in a two-band superconductor: A point-contact study of Mn-substituted MgB2 single crystals

We present the first results of directional point-contact measurements in Mg_{1-x}Mn_{x}B_2 single crystals, with x up to 0.015 and bulk T_c down to 13.3 K. The order parameters Delta_{sigma} and Delta_{pi} were obtained by fitting the conductance curves with the two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) model. Both Delta_{pi} and Delta_{sigma} decrease with the critical temperature of the junctions T_c^A, but remain clearly distinct up to the highest Mn content. Once analyzed within the Eliashberg theory, the results indicate that spin-flip scattering is dominant in the sigma band, as also confirmed by first-principle band structure calculations.

First-principles calculation of the piezoelectric tensor d of III-V nitrides

We report direct first-principles density-functional calculations of the piezoelectric tensor $\tensor{d}$ relating polarization to applied stress for the binary compounds AlN, GaN, and InN. The values of $\tensor{d}$ are rather sensitive to the choice of the exchange-correlation functional, and results are presented for both the local-density and gradient approximations. A comparison with experiment and with values predicted indirectly from the elastic and e-piezoconstant tensors is also presented.

Stability of Ge-related point defects and complexes in Ge-doped SiO_2

We analyze Ge-related defects in Ge-doped SiO_2 using first-principles density functional techniques. Ge is incorporated at the level of ~ 1 mol % and above. The growth conditions of Ge:SiO_2 naturally set up oxygen deficiency, with vacancy concentration increasing by a factor 10^5 over undoped SiO_2, and O vacancies binding strongly to Ge impurities. All the centers considered exhibit potentially EPR-active states, candidates for the identification of the Ge(n) centers. Substitutional Ge produces an apparent gap shrinking via its extrinsic levels.
