Comparison of gluon flux-tube distributions for quark-diquark and quark-antiquark hadrons

The distribution of gluon fields in hadrons is of fundamental interest in QCD. Using lattice QCD we have observed the formation of gluon flux tubes within 3 quark (baryon) and quark plus antiquark (meson) systems for a wide variety of spatial distributions of the color sources. In particular we have investigated three quark configurations where two of the quarks are close together and the third quark is some distance away, which approximates a quark plus diquark string. We find that the string tension of the quark-diquark string is the same as that of the quark-antiquark string on the same lattice. We also compare the longitudinal and transverse profiles of the gluon flux tubes for both sets of strings, and find them to be of similar radii and to have similar vacuum suppression.

Gluon flux-tube distribution and linear confinement in baryons

We have observed the formation of gluon flux-tubes within baryons using lattice QCD techniques. A high-statistics approach, based on translational and rotational symmetries of the four-dimensional lattice, enables us to observe correlations between vacuum action density and quark positions in a completely gauge independent manner. This contrasts with earlier studies which used gauge-dependent smoothing techniques. We used 200 O(a^2) improved quenched QCD gauge-field configurations on a 16^3x32 lattice with a lattice spacing of 0.123 fm. In the presence of static quarks flux tubes representing the suppression of gluon-field fluctuations are observed. We have analyzed 11 L-shapes and 8 T and Y shapes of varying sizes in order to explore a variety of flux-tube topologies, including the ground state. At large separations, Y-shape flux-tube formation is observed. T-shaped paths are observed to relax towards a Y-shaped topology, whereas L-shaped paths give rise to a large potential energy. We do not find any evidence for the formation of a Delta-shaped flux-tube (empty triangle) distribution. However, at small quark separations, we observe an expulsion of gluon-field fluctuations in the shape of a filled triangle with maximal expulsion at the centre of the triangle. Having identified the precise geometry of the flux distribution, we are able to perform quantitative comparison between the length of the flux-tube and the associated static quark potential. For every source configuration considered we find a universal string tension, and conclude that, for large quark separations, the ground state potential is that which minimizes the length of the flux-tube. The flux tube radius of the baryonic ground state potential is found to be 0.38 \pm 0.03 fm, with vacuum fluctuations suppressed by 7.2 \pm 0.6 %.

The spin dependent structure functions of the nucleon

We calculate the spin dependent structure functions g_{1}(x) and g_{2}(x) of the proton and neutron. Our calculation uses the meson cloud model of nucleon structure, which has previously given a good description of the HERMES data on polarized sea quark distributions, and includes all the leading contributions to spin dependent effects in this model. We find good agreement between our calculations and the current experimental data for the structure functions. We include in our calculations kinematic terms, which mix transverse and longitudinal spin components, for hadrons of spin 1/2, 1 and 3/2, and which can give considerable contributions to the g_{2} structure functions. We also consider the possible interference terms between baryons or mesons in different final states with the same quantum numbers, and show that most of these terms do not give leading contributions to the spin dependent structure functions.

A toy model for generalised parton distributions

We give the results of a simple model for the diagonal and off-diagonal valence quark distributions of a pion. We show that structure can be implemented in a gauge-invariant manner. This explicit model questions the validityof the momentum sum rule, and gives an explicit counter-example to the Wandzura-Wilczek ansatz for twist-3 GPD's.

Gluon field distribution in baryons

Methods for revealing the distribution of gluon fields within the three-quark static-baryon potential are presented. In particular, we outline methods for studying the sensitivity of the source on the emerging vacuum response for the three-quark system. At the same time, we explore the possibility of revealing gluon-field distributions in three-quark systems in QCD without the use of gauge-dependent smoothing techniques. Renderings of flux tubes from a preliminary high-statistics study on a 12^3 X 24 lattice are presented.

A Model for the Generalized Parton Distribution of the Pion

We calculate the off-forward structure function of the pion within a simple model where the size of the pion is accounted for using a momentum cut-off. Twist-two and twist-three generalized parton distributions are extracted. Relations between twist-three and twist-two contributions are obtained, the origin of which is not kinematical as they differ from those arising from the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation.

A Simple Model for Generalised Parton Distributions of the Pion

We present here an extension of our model for the pion, which we used previously to calculate its diagonal structure function, to the off-forward case. The imaginary part of the off-forward gamma^* pi -> gamma^* pi scattering amplitude is evaluated in the chiral limit (m_pi=0) and related to the twist-two and twist-three generalised parton distributions H, H3, H3tilde. Non-perturbative effects, linked to the size of the pion and still preserving gauge invariance, are included. Remarkable new relations between H, H3 and H3tilde are obtained and discussed.

A Model for the Off-forward Structure Functions of the Pion

We extend our model for the pion, which we used previously to calculate its diagonal structure function, to the off-forward case. The imaginary part of the off-forward gamma* pi -> gamma* pi scattering amplitude is evaluated in the chiral limit (m_pi=0) and related to the twist-two and twist-three generalised parton distributions, H, H3, H3tilde. Non-perturbative effects, linked to the size of the pion and still preserving gauge invariance, are included. Remarkable new relations between H, H3 and H3tilde are obtained and discussed.

Generalized Parton Distributions of the Pion

Off-forward structure functions of the pion are investigated in twist-two and twist-three approximation. A simple model is used for the pion, which allows to introduce finite size effects, while preserving gauge invariance. Results for the imaginary parts of the gamma^* pi -> gamma^* pi off-forward amplitude and of the structure functions are presented. Generalized Callan-Gross relations are obtained.

Deep inelastic scattering from A=3 nuclei and the neutron structure function

We present a comprehensive analysis of deep inelastic scattering from He-3 and H-3, focusing in particular on the extraction of the free neutron structure function, F_2^n. Nuclear corrections are shown to cancel to within 1-2% for the isospin-weighted ratio of He-3 to H-3 structure functions, which leads to more than an order of magnitude improvement in the current uncertainty on the neutron to proton ratio F_2^n/F_2^p at large x. Theoretical uncertainties originating from the nuclear wave function, including possible non-nucleonic components, are evaluated. Measurement of the He-3 and H-3 structure functions will, in addition, determine the magnitude of the EMC effect in all A < 4 nuclei.

Confinement and cut-off: a model for the pion quark distribution function

The pion structure function is investigated in a simple pseudo-scalar coupling model of pion and constituent quark fields. The imaginary part of the forward Compton scattering amplitude is evaluated. We show that the introduction of non-perturbative effects, linked through a cut-off to the size of the pion, allows the reproduction of important features of the pion quark distribution function.

Pion Structure Function and Violation of the Momentum Sum Rule

We present a method to evaluate the pion structure functions from a box diagram calculation. Pion and constituent quark fields are coupled through the simplest pseudoscalar coupling. The gamma^* pi -> q \bar q cross-section is evaluated and related to the structure functions. We then show that the introduction of non-perturbative effects, related to the pion size and preserving gauge invariance, provides us with a straighforward relation with the quark distribution. It is predicted that higher-twist terms become negligible for Q^2 larger than about 2 GeV^2 and that quarks in the pion have a momentum fraction smaller than in the proton. We enlarge the discussion concerning this violation of the momentum sum rule, emphasizing that the sum rule is recovered in the chiral limit and also when the finite size condition is not imposed.

The Valence Quark Distribution of the Pion

The pion structure function is investigated in a simple model, where the pion and its constituent quark fields are coupled through the simplest pseudoscalar coupling. The imaginary part of the forward gamma* pi -> gamma* pi scattering amplitude is evaluated and related to the structure functions. It is shown that the introduction of non-perturbative effects, linked to the size of the pion, allows a connection with the quark distribution. It is predicted that higher-twist terms become negligible for Q^2 larger than ~2 GeV^2, that quarks in the pion have a momentum fraction smaller than in the proton case, and that the momentum sum rule is violated for the pion.

Dynamical relativistic corrections to the leptonic decay width of heavy quarkonia

We calculate the dynamical relativistic corrections, originating from radiative one-gluon-exchange, to the leptonic decay width of heavy quarkonia in the framework of a covariant formulation of Light-Front Dynamics. Comparison with the non-relativistic calculations of the leptonic decay width of J=1 charmonium and bottomonium S-ground states shows that relativistic corrections are large. Most importantly, the calculation of these dynamical relativistic corrections legitimate a perturbative expansion in $α_s$, even in the charmonium sector. This is in contrast with the ongoing belief based on calculations in the non-relativistic limit. Consequences for the ability of several phenomenological potential to describe these decays are drawn.

We present a comprehensive analysis of the nuclear effects important in DIS on polarized He-3 over a wide range of Bjorken x, 10^{-4} \leq x \leq 0.8. Effects relevant for the extraction of the neutron spin structure function, g1^n, from the He-3 data are emphasized.

Structure functions for the three nucleon system

The spectral functions and light-cone momentum distributions of protons and neutrons in 3He and 3H are given in terms of the three-nucleon wave function for realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions. To reduce computational complexity, separable expansions are employed for the nucleon-nucleon potentials. The results for the light-cone momentum distributions suggest that they are not very sensitive to the details of the two-body interaction, as long as it has reasonable short-range repulsion. The unpolarised and polarised structure functions are examined for both 3He and 3H in order to test the usefulness of 3He as a neutron target. It is found that the measurement of the spin structure function of polarised 3H would provide a very clear test of the predicted change in the polarised parton distributions of a bound proton.

Measurement of the F2n/F2p and d/u Ratios in Deep Inelastic Electron Scattering off 3H and 3He

We discuss a possible measurement of the ratio of the nucleon structure functions, F2n/F2p, and the ratio of the up to down quark distributions, u/d, at large x, by performing deep inelastic electron scattering from the 3H and 3He mirror nuclei with the 11 GeV upgraded beam of Jefferson Lab. The measurement is expected to be almost free of nuclear effects, which introduce a significant uncertainty in the extraction of these two ratios from deep inelastic scattering off the proton and deuteron. The results are expected to test perturbative and non-perturbative mechanisms of spin-flavor symmetry breaking in the nucleon, and constrain the structure function parameterizations needed for the interpretation of high energy e-p, p-p and p-pbar collider data. The precision of the expected data can also allow for testing competing parameterizations of the nuclear EMC effect and provide valuable constraints on models of its dynamical origin.
