Runaway electron induced explosions of graphite; modeling versus controlled DIII-D experiments

The state-of-the-art concerning the modeling of the thermomechanical response of graphite to runaway electron (RE) impact is based on one-way coupled linear thermoelasticity combined with Rankine's strength-based failure criterion and limited to the onset of material failure. Here, the predictive capabilities are extended to the nonlinear damage phase characterized by material fragmentation and debris expulsion. This is achieved by introducing plasticity via the Johnson-Holmquist constitutive model, adopting an effective plastic strain-based failure criterion and coupling finite element analysis with smoothed-particle hydrodynamics. The extended thermomechanical model is successfully benchmarked against the results of two controlled RE-induced damage experiments recently carried out in DIII-D. This constitutes an important step towards the final objective of quantitatively describing the thermomechanical response of tungsten to REs.

Dust remobilization in fusion plasmas under steady state conditions

The first combined experimental and theoretical studies of dust remobilization by plasma forces are reported. The main theoretical aspects of remobilization in fusion devices under steady state conditions are analyzed. In particular, the dominant role of adhesive forces is highlighted and generic remobilization conditions - direct lift-up, sliding, rolling - are formulated. A novel experimental technique is proposed, based on controlled adhesion of dust grains on tungsten samples combined with detailed mapping of the dust deposition profile prior and post plasma exposure. Proof-of-principle experiments in the TEXTOR tokamak and the EXTRAP-T2R reversed-field pinch are presented. The versatile environment of the linear device Pilot-PSI allowed for experiments with different magnetic field topologies and varying plasma conditions that were complemented with camera observations.

Formation of the $S=-1$ resonance X(2265) in the reaction $pp -> X + K^+$ at 2.50 and 2.85 GeV

Analyzing DISTO data of $pp -> p Lambda K^+$ at $T_p = 2.50$ and 2.85 GeV to populate a previously reported X(2265) resonance with $M_X = 2267$ MeV/$c^2$ and $Gamma_X = 118$ MeV at 2.85 GeV, we found that the production of X(2265) at 2.50 GeV is much less than that at 2.85 GeV (less than 10%), though it is expected from a kinematical consideration to be produced as much as 33% of that at 2.85 GeV. The small population of X(2265) at 2.50 GeV is consistent with the very weak production of Lambda (1405) at the same incident energy toward its production threshold, thus indicating that Lambda (1405) plays an important role as a doorway state for the formation of X(2265).

Automatic detection and tracking of dust particles in a RF plasma sheath

A method enabling automatic detection and tracking of large amounts of individual dust particles in plasmas is presented. Individual trajectories can be found with a good spatiotemporal resolution, even without applying any external light source to facilitate detection. Main advantages of this method is a high portability and the possibility of making statistical analyses of the trajectories of a large amount of non uniformly size distributed particles, under challenging illumination conditions and with low time and computational resources. In order to evaluate the efficiency of different detection and tracking strategies statistically, an experimental benchmark is proposed, and completed by numerical simulations.

Investigating transport of dust particles in plasmas

An algorithm has been developped, which makes it possible to automatically extract trajectories of a large number of particles from fast imaging data, allowing a statistical analysis of particles trajectories under various plasma conditions, a better understanding of their influence on plasma properties, and a better characterization of the plasma itself. In this contribution, we focus on results obtained in a radiofrequency parallel plate reactor, where a large amount of micron-sized carbon dust is produced in situ. The use of the rescaled range analysis (R/S analysis) applied to dust particles displacements allows decomposing dust dynamic on different time scales. It is shown that dust displacement is dominated by collisions on short time scales whereas long term behaviour is strongly influenced by large scale plasma fluctuations.

Indication of a deeply bound compact K-pp state formed in the pp -> p Lambda K+ reaction at 2.85 GeV

We have analyzed data of the DISTO experiment on the exclusive pp -> p Lambda K+ reaction at 2.85 GeV to search for a strongly bound compact K-pp (= X) state to be formed in the pp -> K+ + X reaction. The observed spectra of the K+ missing-mass and the p Lambda invariant-mass with high transverse momenta of p and K+ revealed a broad distinct peak with a mass M_X = 2265 +- 2 (stat) +- 5 (syst) MeV/c2 and a width Gamma_X = 118 +- 8 (stat) +- 10 (syst) MeV.

DISTO data on Kpp

The data from the DISTO Collaboration on the exclusive pp -> p K+ Lambda production acquired at T_p = 2.85 GeV have been re-analysed in order to search for a deeply bound K- pp (= X) state, to be formed in the binary process pp -> K+ X. The preliminary spectra of the DeltaM_{K+} missing-mass and of the M_{p Lambda} invariant-mass show, for large transverse-momenta of protons and kaons, a distinct broad peak with a mass M_X = 2265 +- 2 MeV/c^2 and a width Gamma_X = 118 +- 8 MeV/c^2.

Rho^0 meson production in the pp ->pppi+pi- reaction at 3.67 GeV/c

Total and differential cross sections for the exclusive reaction pp->pp rho^0 observed via the pi+pi- decay channel have been measured at beam momentum=3.67 GeV/c. The observed total meson production cross section is determined to be 23.4 +- 0.8 +-8 microb and is significantly lower than typical cross sections used in model calculations for heavy ion collisions. The differential cross sections measured indicate a strong anisotropy cos^2(theta^{CM}) in the rho^0 meson production.

Spallation Neutron Production by 0.8, 1.2 and 1.6 GeV Protons on various Targets

Spallation neutron production in proton induced reactions on Al, Fe, Zr, W, Pb and Th targets at 1.2 GeV and on Fe and Pb at 0.8, and 1.6 GeV measured at the SATURNE accelerator in Saclay is reported. The experimental double-differential cross-sections are compared with calculations performed with different intra-nuclear cascade models implemented in high energy transport codes. The broad angular coverage also allowed the determination of average neutron multiplicities above 2 MeV. Deficiencies in some of the models commonly used for applications are pointed out.

$ϕ$ and $ω$ Meson Production in pp Reactions at $p_{lab}$=3.67 GeV/c

The exclusive production cross sections for $ω$ and $ϕ$ mesons have been measured in proton-proton reactions at $p_{lab}=3.67$ GeV/c. The observed $ϕ/ω$ cross section ratio is $(3.8\pm0.2^{+1.2}_{-0.9})\times 10^{-3}$. After phase space corrections, this ratio is enhanced by about an order of magnitude relative to naive predictions based upon the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka (OZI) rule, in comparison to an enhancement by a factor $\sim 3$ previously observed at higher beam momenta. The modest increase of this enhancement near the production threshold is compared to the much larger increase of the $ϕ/ω$ ratio observed in specific channels of $\bar pp$ annihilation experiments. Furthermore, differential cross section results are also presented which indicate that although the $ϕ$ meson is predominantly produced from a $^3P_1$ proton-proton entrance channel, other partial waves contribute significantly to the production mechanism at this beam momentum.

Production of $η\prime$ Mesons in the $pp \to ppη\prime$ Reaction at 3.67 GeV/c

The ratio of the total exclusive production cross sections for $η\prime$ and $η$ mesons has been measured in the $pp$ reaction at $p_{beam}=3.67$ GeV/c. The observed $η\prime/η$ ratio is $(0.83\pm{0.11}^{+0.23}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-2}$ from which the exclusive $η\prime$ meson production cross section is determined to be $(1.12\pm{0.15}^{+0.42}_{-0.31})μb$. Differential cross section distributions have been measured. Their shape is consistent with isotropic $η\prime$ meson production.

Near-threshold eta production in the p d -> p d eta reaction

The total cross section of the p d -> p d eta reaction has been measured at two energies near threshold by detecting the final proton and deuteron in a magneti spectrometer. The values are somewhat larger than expected on the basis of two simple theoretical estimates.

K$^-$ Meson Production in the Proton-Proton Reaction at 3.67 GeV/c

The total cross section of the reaction $pp\to ppK^+K^-$ has been determined for proton--proton reactions with $p_{beam}=3.67 GeV/c$. This represents the first cross section measurement of the $pp \to ppK^-K^+$ channel near threshold, and is equivalent to the inclusive $pp\to ppK^-X$ cross section at this beam momentum. The cross section determined at this beam momentum is about a factor 20 lower than that for inclusive $pp\to ppK^+X$ meson production at the same CM energy above the corresponding threshold. This large difference in the $K^+$ and $K^-$ meson inclusive production cross sections in proton-proton reactions is in strong contrast to cross sections measured in sub-threshold heavy ion collisions, which are similar in magnitude at the same energy per nucleon below the respective thresholds.

Spin Transfer in Exclusive Lambda Production from pp Collisions at 3.67 GeV/c

We report the first polarization transfer measurements for exclusive hyperon production reactions. The normal spin transfer coefficient DNN for pp -> p K+ Lambda is large and negative for forward Lambda production at a beam momentum of 3.67 GeV/c, a result qualitatively consistent with expectations for a mechanism dominated by kaon-exchange and rescattering. The sign of DNN is opposite to that observed in the fragmentation regime for inclusive Lambda production at much higher energies.
