Electron-phonon interaction in the lamellar cobaltate Na$_x$CoO$_2$

We study theoretically and experimentally the dependence of the electron-phonon interaction in Na$_x$CoO$_2$ on the sodium concentration $x$. For the two oxygen phonon modes found in Raman experiments, $A_{1g}$ and $E_{1g}$, we calculate the matrix elements of the electron-phonon interaction. Analyzing the feedback effect of the conduction electrons on the phonon frequency we compare the calculated and experimentally observed doping dependence of the $A_{1g}$ mode. Furthermore, due to the momentum dependence of the electron-phonon coupling for the $E_{1g}$ symmetry we find no renormalization of the corresponding phonon frequency which agrees with experiment. Our results shed light on the possible importance of the electron-phonon interaction in this system.

Flux pinning and phase separation in oxygen rich La2-xSrxCuO4+y system

We have studied the magnetic characteristics of a series of super-oxygenated La2-xSrxCuO4+y samples. As shown in previous work, these samples spontaneously phase separate into an oxygen rich superconducting phase with a TC near 40 K and an oxygen poor magnetic phase that also orders near 40 K. All samples studied are highly magnetically reversible even to low temperatures. Although the internal magnetic regions of these samples might be expected to act as pinning sites, our present study shows that they do not favor flux pinning. Flux pinning requires a matching condition between the defect and the superconducting coherence length. Thus, our results imply that the magnetic regions are too large to act as pinning centers. This also implies that the much greater flux pinning in typical La2-xSrxCuO4 materials is the result of nanoscale inhomogeneities that grow to become the large magnetic regions in the super-oxygenated materials. The superconducting regions of the phase separated materials are in that sense cleaner and more homogenous than in the typical cuprate superconductor.

^{59}Co NMR evidence for charge ordering below T_{CO}\sim 51 K in Na_{0.5}CoO_2

The CoO$_{2}$ layers in sodium-cobaltates Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ may be viewed as a spin $S=1/2$ triangular-lattice doped with charge carriers. The underlying physics of the cobaltates is very similar to that of the high $T_{c}$ cuprates. We will present unequivocal $^{59}$Co NMR evidence that below $T_{CO}\sim51 K$, the insulating ground state of the itinerant antiferromagnet Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_{2}$ ($T_{N}\sim 86 K$) is induced by charge ordering.

Local moment, itinerancy and deviation from Fermi liquid behavior in Na$_x$CoO$_2$ for $0.71 \leq x \leq 0.84$

Here we report the observation of Fermi surface (FS) pockets via the Shubnikov de Haas effect in Na$_x$CoO$_2$ for $x = 0.71$ and 0.84, respectively. Our observations indicate that the FS expected for each compound intersects their corresponding Brillouin zones, as defined by the previously reported superlattice structures, leading to small reconstructed FS pockets, but only if a precise number of holes per unit cell is \emph{localized}. For $0.71 \leq x < 0.75$ the coexistence of itinerant carriers and localized $S =1/2$ spins on a paramagnetic triangular superlattice leads at low temperatures to the observation of a deviation from standard Fermi-liquid behavior in the electrical transport and heat capacity properties, suggesting the formation of some kind of quantum spin-liquid ground state.

Sodium vacancy ordering and the co-existence of localized spins and itinerant charges in NaxCoO2

The sodium cobaltate family (NaxCoO2) is unique among transition metal oxides because the Co sits on a triangular lattice and its valence can be tuned over a wide range by varying the Na concentration x. Up to now detailed modeling of the rich phenomenology (which ranges from unconventional superconductivity to enhanced thermopower) has been hampered by the difficulty of controlling pure phases. We discovered that certain Na concentrations are specially stable and are associated with superlattice ordering of the Na clusters. This leads naturally to a picture of co-existence of localized spins and itinerant charge carriers. For x = 0.84 we found a remarkably small Fermi energy of 87 K. Our picture brings coherence to a variety of measurements ranging from NMR to optical to thermal transport. Our results also allow us to take the first step towards modeling the mysterious ``Curie-Weiss'' metal state at x = 0.71. We suggest the local moments may form a quantum spin liquid state and we propose experimental test of our hypothesis.

X-ray Scattering Study of the spin-Peierls transition and soft phonon behavior in TiOCl

We have studied the S=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet TiOCl using single crystal x-ray diffraction and inelastic x-ray scattering techniques. The Ti ions form staggered spin chains which dimerize below Tc1 = 66 K and have an incommensurate lattice distortion between Tc1 and Tc2 = 92 K. Based on our measurements of the intensities, wave vectors, and harmonics of the incommensurate superlattice peaks, we construct a model for the incommensurate modulation. The results are in good agreement with a soliton lattice model, though some quantitative discrepancies exist near Tc2. The behavior of the phonons has been studied using inelastic x-ray scattering with ~2 meV energy resolution. For the first time, a zone boundary phonon which softens at the spin-Peierls temperature Tsp has been observed. Our results show reasonably good quantitative agreement with the Cross-Fisher theory for the phonon dynamics at wave vectors near the zone boundary and temperatures near Tsp. However, not all aspects of the data can be described, such as the strong overdamping of the soft mode above Tsp. Overall, our results show that TiOCl is a good realization of a spin-Peierls system, where the phonon softening allows us to identify the transition temperature as Tsp=Tc2=92 K

Searching for Stable Na-ordered Phases in Single Crystal Samples of gamma-NaxCoO2

We report on the preparation and characterization of single crystal gamma phase NaxCoO2 with 0.25 < x < 0.84 using a non-aqueous electrochemical chronoamperemetry technique. By carefully mapping the overpotential versus x (for x < 0.84), we find six distinct stable phases with Na levels corresponding to x ~ 0.75, 0.71, 0.50, 0.43, 0.33 and 0.25. The composition with x ~0.55 appears to have a critical Na concentration which separates samples with different magnetic behavior as well as different Na ion diffusion mechanisms. Chemical analysis of an aged crystal reveals different Na ion diffusion mechanisms above and below x_c ~ 0.53, where the diffusion process above x_c has a diffusion coefficient about five times larger than that below x_c. The series of crystals were studied with X-ray diffraction, susceptibility, and transport measurements. The crystal with x = 0.5 shows a weak ferromagnetic transition below T=27 K in addition to the usual transitions at T = 51 K and 88 K. The resistivity of the Curie-Weiss metallic Na0.71CoO2 composition has a very low residual resistivity, which attests to the high homogeneity of the crystals prepared by this improved electrochemical method. Our results on the various stable crystal compositions point to the importance of Na ion ordering across the phase diagram.

Commensurate Fluctuations in the Pseudogap and Incommensurate spin-Peierls Phases of TiOCl

X-ray scattering measurements on single crystals of TiOCl reveal the presence of commensurate dimerization peaks within both the incommensurate spin-Peierls phase and the so-called pseudogap phase above T_c2. This scattering is relatively narrow in Q-space indicating long correlation lengths exceeding ~ 100 A below T* ~ 130 K. It is also slightly shifted in Q relative to that of the commensurate long range ordered state at the lowest temperatures, and it coexists with the incommensurate Bragg peaks below T_c2. The integrated scattering over both commensurate and incommensurate positions evolves continuously with decreasing temperature for all temperatures below T* ~ 130 K.

Comment on "Raman spectroscopy study of NaxCoO2 and superconducting NaxCoO2 yH2O"

The effect of surface degradation of the thermolectric cobaltite on Raman spectra is discussed and compared to experimental results from Co3O4 single crystals. We conclude that on NaCl flux grown NaxCoO2 crystals a surface layer of Co3O4 easily forms that leads to the observation of an intense phonon around 700 cm-1 [Phys. Rev. B 70, 052502 (2004)]. Raman spectra on freshly cleaved crystals from optical floating zone ovens do not show such effects and have a high frequency phonon cut-off at approximately 600 cm -1 [Phys. Rev. Lett 96, 167204 (2006)]. We discuss the relation of structural dimensionality, electronic correlations and the high frequency phonon cut-off of the thermolectric cobaltite.

Shubnikov de Haas effect in the metallic state of Na$_{0.3}$CoO$_2$

Shubnikov de Haas oscillations for two well defined frequencies, corresponding respectively to areas of 0.8 and 1.36% of the first Brillouin zone (FBZ), were observed in single crystals of Na$_{0.3}$CoO$_2$. The existence of Na superstructures in Na$_{0.3}$CoO$_2$, coupled with this observation, suggests the possibility that the periods are due to the reconstruction of the large Fermi surface around the $Γ$ point. An alternative interpretation in terms of the long sought-after $ε_g^\prime$ pockets is also considered but found to be incompatible with existing specific heat data.

High-field ESR studies of the quantum spin magnet CaCu2O3

We report an electron spin resonance (ESR) study of the s=1/2-Heisenberg pseudo-ladder magnet CaCu2O3 in pulsed magnetic fields up to 40 T. At sub-Terahertz frequencies we observe an ESR signal originating from a small amount of uncompensated spins residing presumably at the imperfections of the strongly antiferromagnetically correlated host spin lattice. The data give evidence that these few percent of ''extra'' spin states are coupled strongly to the bulk spins and are involved in the antiferromagnetic ordering at T_N = 25 K. By mapping the frequency/resonance field diagram we have determined a small gap for magnetic excitations below T_N of the order of 0.3 - 0.8 meV. Such a small value of the gap explains the occurrence of the spin-flop transition in CaCu2O 3 at weak magnetic fields H_{sf} ~ 3 T. Qualitative changes of the ESR response with increasing the field strength give indications that strong magnetic fields reduce the antiferromagnetic correlations and may even suppress the long-range magnetic order in CaCu2O3. ESR data support scenarios with a significant role of the ''extra'' spin states for the properties of low-dimensional quantum magnets.

The infrared conductivity of Na$_x$CoO$_2$: evidence of gapped states

We present infrared ab-plane conductivity data for the layered cobaltate Na$_x$CoO$_2$ at three different doping levels ($x=0.25, 0.50$, and 0.75). The Drude weight increases monotonically with hole doping, $1-x$. At the lowest hole doping level $x$=0.75 the system resembles the normal state of underdoped cuprate superconductors with a scattering rate that varies linearly with frequency and temperature and there is an onset of scattering by a bosonic mode at 600 \cm. Two higher hole doped samples ($x=0.50$ and 0.25) show two different-size gaps (110 \cm and 200 \cm, respectively) in the optical conductivities at low temperatures and become insulators. The spectral weights lost in the gap region of 0.50 and 0.25 samples are shifted to prominent peaks at 200 \cm and 800 \cm, respectively. We propose that the two gapped states of the two higher hole doped samples ($x$=0.50 and 0.25) are pinned charge ordered states.

Anomalous electronic Raman scattering in Na_xCoO_2 H_2O

Raman scattering experiments on Na_{x}CoO_2 yH_2O single crystals show a broad electronic continuum with a pronounced peak around 100 cm-1 and a cutoff at approximately 560 cm-1over a wide range of doping levels. The electronic Raman spectra in superconducting and non-superconducting samples are similar at room temperature, but evolve in markedly different ways with decreasing temperature. For superconducting samples, the low-energy spectral weight is depleted upon cooling below T* sim 150K, indicating a opening of a pseudogap that is not present in non-superconducting materials. Weak additional phonon modes observed below T* suggest that the pseudogap is associated with charge ordering.

Neutron scattering study of novel magnetic order in Na0.5CoO2

We report polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic order in single crystals of Na0.5CoO2. Our data indicate that below T_N=88 K the spins form a novel antiferromagnetic pattern within the CoO2 planes, consisting of alternating rows of ordered and non-ordered Co ions. The domains of magnetic order are closely coupled to the domains of Na ion order, consistent with such a two-fold symmetric spin arrangement. Magnetoresistance and anisotropic susceptibility measurements further support this model for the electronic ground state.

Study of structure and lattice dynamics of the Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$(001) surface by helium-atom scattering

Structure and lattice dynamics of the (001) surface of Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ have been studied by helium atom scattering (HAS). Analysis of diffraction patterns obtained by elastic HAS revealed a surface periodicity consistent with bulk termination, and confirms that the surface is non-polar and stable which favors a SrCl surface termination. Bulk and surface lattice dynamical calculations based on the shell-model were carried out to characterize the experimental phonon dispersions obtained by inelastic HAS. No experimental surface mode was observed above 200 cm$^{-1}$. Comparison between the experimental data and theoretical results for two different slabs with SrCl and CuO$_2$ terminations showed that the experimental data conforms exclusively with the SrCl surface modes.

Spin gap formation in the quantum spin systems TiOX, X=Cl and Br

In the layered quantum spin systems TiOCl and TiOBr the magnetic susceptibility shows a very weak temperature dependence at high temperatures and transition-induced phenomena at low temperatures. There is a clear connection of the observed transition temperatures to the distortion of the octahedra and the layer separation. Band structure calculations point to a relation of the local coordinations and the dimensionality of the magnetic properties. While from magnetic Raman scattering only a small decrease of the magnetic exchange by -5-10% is derived comparing TiOCl with TiOBr, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility favors a much bigger change.

Phonon scattering and stability of Na_0.5CoO_2

Raman scattering experiments have been performed on Na_xCoO_2 as function of temperature at the composition x=0.5 where a structural instability and a metal-insulator transition have been observed. Three additional phonon modes are observed compared to samples with larger x. An in-situ annealing study (T_max=550 K) with the initial presence of water vapor at ambient conditions reveals an irreversible structural instability of this composition.
