Inclusive dijet hadroproduction with a rapidity veto constraint

We study ratios of azimuthal-angle distributions in Mueller-Navelet jets after imposing a rapidity veto constraint: the minijet radiation activity is restricted to only allow final-state partons separated at least a distance in rapidity $b$. It is well-known that the asymptotic growth with the rapidity separation of the two tagged jets of the NLLA BFKL Green's function requires a value of $b \simeq {\cal O} (2)$ in order to avoid unphysical cross sections. We further investigate this point from a phenomenological point of view and work out those values of $b$ which best fit angular distributions measured at the LHC in a realistic set-up where impact factors and parton distribution effects are also taken into account.

Multi-jet production in the high energy limit at LHC

We briefly review observables that were recently proposed in inclusive 3 jet production at hadronic colliders. They are based on azimuthal angle correlations between the final state jets and can be seen as a generalisation of the usual Mueller-Navelet setup. We discuss the stability of the observables once higher order corrections beyond the leading logarithmic accuracy are taken into account. Finally, we give a status report on a related project in which we examine azimuthal angle correlations for Mueller-Navelet jets after imposing a rapidity veto which forbids subsequent minijet emissions to be very close in rapidity.

LHC Forward Physics

The goal of this report is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics, with a special attention to the topics that can be studied at the LHC. The report starts presenting a selection of the Monte Carlo simulation tools currently available, chapter 2, then enters the rich phenomenology of QCD at low, chapter 3, and high, chapter 4, momentum transfer, while the unique scattering conditions of central exclusive production are analyzed in chapter 5. The last two experimental topics, Cosmic Ray and Heavy Ion physics are presented in the chapter 6 and 7 respectively. Chapter 8 is dedicated to the BFKL dynamics, multiparton interactions, and saturation. The report ends with an overview of the forward detectors at LHC. Each chapter is correlated with a comprehensive bibliography, attempting to provide to the interested reader with a wide opportunity for further studies.

High energy effects in multi-jet production at LHC

We study differential cross sections for the production of three and four jets in multi-Regge kinematics, the main interest lying on azimuthal angle dependences. The theoretical setup is the jet production from a single BFKL ladder with a convolution of two/three BFKL Green functions, where two forward/backward jets are always tagged in the final state. Furthermore, we require the tagging of one/two further jets in more central regions of the detectors with a relative separation in rapidity. We found, as result, that the dependence on transverse momenta and rapidities of the central jets can be considered as a distinct signal of the onset of BFKL dynamics.

Azimuthal-angle Observables in Inclusive Three-jet Production

We discuss the impact of corrections beyond the leading-logarithmic accuracy on some recently proposed LHC observables that are based on azimuthal-angle ratios in a kinematical setup that is an extension to the usual one for Mueller-Navelet jets, after requiring an extra tagged jet in central regions of rapidity. The corrections tend to be mild which suggests that these observables are an excellent way to probe the onset of BFKL effects at hadronic colliders.

Inclusive Four-jet Production at 7 and 13 TeV: Azimuthal Profile in Multi-Regge Kinematics

Recently, new observables in LHC inclusive events with three tagged jets were proposed. Here, we extend that proposal to events with four tagged jets. The events are characterised by one jet in the forward direction, one in the backward direction with a large rapidity distance $Y$ from the first one and two more jets tagged in more central regions of the detector. In our setup, non-tagged associated mini-jet multiplicity is present and needs to be accounted for by the inclusion of BFKL gluon Green functions. The projection of the cross section on azimuthal-angle components opens up the opportunity for defining new ratios of correlation functions of the azimuthal angle differences among the tagged jets that can be used as probes of the BFKL dynamics.

Multi-Regge kinematics and azimuthal angle observables for inclusive four-jet production

We evaluate differential cross sections for production of four jets in multi-Regge kinematics at a hadron collider. The main focus lies on azimuthal angle dependences. As in previous studies, the ratios of correlation functions of products of cosines of azimuthal angle differences among the tagged jets offer us the cleanest quantities to compare with experimental data. The calculations are based on the jet production from a single BFKL ladder with a convolution of three BFKL Green functions where we always have two forward/backward jets tagged in the final state. We also demand the tagging of two further jets in more central regions of the detectors with a relative separation in rapidity from each other, plus the inclusive production of an arbitrary number of mini-jets. We show that dependences on the transverse momenta and rapidity of the two central jets can be a distinct signal of the onset of BFKL dynamics.

Stability of Azimuthal-angle Observables under Higher Order Corrections in Inclusive Three-jet Production

Recently, a new family of observables consisting of azimuthal-angle generalised ratios was proposed in a kinematical setup that resembles the usual Mueller-Navelet jets but with an additional tagged jet in the central region of rapidity. Non-tagged minijet activity between the three jets can affect significantly the azimuthal angle orientation of the jets and is accounted for by the introduction of two BFKL gluon Green functions. Here, we calculate the, presumably, most relevant higher order corrections to the observables by now convoluting the three leading-order jet vertices with two gluon Green functions at next-to-leading logarithmic approximation. The corrections appear to be mostly moderate giving us confidence that the recently proposed observables are actually an excellent way to probe the BFKL dynamics at the LHC. Furthermore, we allow for the jets to take values in different rapidity bins in various configurations such that a comparison between our predictions and the experimental data is a straightforward task.

Probing the BFKL dynamics in inclusive three jet production at the LHC

We propose the study of new observables in LHC inclusive events with three tagged jets, one in the forward direction, one in the backward direction and both well-separated in rapidity from the each other (Mueller-Navelet jets), together with a third jet tagged in central regions of rapidity. Since non-tagged associated mini-jet multiplicity is allowed, we argue that projecting the cross sections on azimuthal-angle components can provide several distinct tests of the BFKL dynamics. Realistic LHC kinematical cuts are introduced.

Inclusive three jet production at the LHC at 7 and 13 TeV collision energies

We discuss briefly a recent study of new observables in LHC inclusive events with three tagged jets. One jet is in the forward direction, the second is in the backward direction and well-separated in rapidity from the first, whereas, the third tagged jet is to be found in more central regions of the detector. Taking into consideration that non-tagged mini-jet emissions are allowed and that they may be accounted for by the BFKL gluon Green function, we project the cross sections on azimuthal-angle components and define suitable ratios based on these projections which can provide several distinct tests of the BFKL dynamics.

Inclusive three jet production at the LHC as a new BFKL probe

We discuss recently proposed observables, sensitive to BFKL dynamics, in the context of multijet production at the large hadron collider (LHC). In particular, we consider ratios of azimuthal angle differences in final states with three jets, well separated in rapidity from each other, with two of them being very forward/backward and the third one in the central region.

BFKL predictions for inclusive three jet production at the LHC

We define new observables sensitive to BFKL dynamics in the context of multijet production at the large hadron collider (LHC). We propose the study of the inclusive production of three jets well separated in rapidity from each other, with two of them being very forward. We show that the tagging of a third jet in the central region of rapidity allows for a very strong test of the BFKL formalism. In particular, we have studied two projections on azimuthal angles for the differential cross section which allow for the definition of many different observables whose behavior when varying the $p_t$ and rapidity of the central jet is a distinct signal of BFKL dynamics. In order to reduce the theoretical uncertainties and influence of higher order corrections, we propose the study of ratios of correlation functions of products of cosines of azimuthal angle differences among the tagged jets.

Scale choice & collinear contributions to Mueller-Navelet jets at LHC energies

We investigate the stability under variation of the renormalization, factorization and energy scales entering the calculation of the cross section, at next-to-leading order in the BFKL formalism, for the production of Mueller-Navelet jets at the Large Hadron Collider, following the experimental cuts on the tagged jets. To find optimal values for the scales involved in this observable it is possible to look for regions of minimal sensitivity to their variation. We show that the scales found with this logic are more natural, in the sense of being more similar to the squared transverse momenta of the tagged jets, when the BFKL kernel is improved with a resummation of collinear contributions than when the treatment is at a purely next-to-leading order. We also discuss the good perturbative convergence of the ratios of azimuthal angle correlations, which are quite insensitive to collinear resummations and well described by the original BFKL framework.

A study of the diffusion pattern in N=4 SYM at high energies

In the context of evolution equations and scattering amplitudes in the high energy limit of the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory we investigate in some detail the BFKL gluon Green function at next-to-leading order. In particular, we study its collinear behaviour in terms of an expansion in different angular components. We also perform a Monte Carlo simulation of the different final states contributing to such a Green function and construct the diffusion pattern into infrared and ultraviolet modes and multiplicity distributions, making emphasis in separating the gluon contributions from those of scalars and gluinos. We find that the combined role of the non-gluonic degrees of freedom is to improve the collinear behavior and reduce the diffusion into ultraviolet regions while not having any effect on the average multiplicities or diffusion into the infrared. In terms of growth with energy, the non-zero conformal spin components are mainly driven by the gluon terms in the BFKL kernel. For zero conformal spin (Pomeron) the effect of the scalar and gluino sectors is to dramatically push the Green function towards higher values.

Mueller-Navelet jets in high-energy hadron collisions

We consider within QCD collinear factorization the process $p+p\to {\rm jet} +{\rm jet} +X$, where two forward high-$p_T$ jets are produced with a large separation in rapidity $Δy$ (Mueller-Navelet jets [1]). The hard part of the reaction receives large higher-order corrections $\sim α^n_s (Δy)^n$, which can be accounted for in the BFKL approach. We calculate cross section and azimuthal decorrelation, using the next-to-leading order jet vertices, in the small-cone approximation [2].

The next-to-leading order jet vertex for Mueller-Navelet and forward jets revisited

We recalculate, completely within the original BFKL approach and at the next-to-leading order, the jet vertex relevant for the production of Mueller-Navelet jets in proton collisions and of forward jets in DIS. We consider both processes with incoming quark and gluon. The starting point is the definition of quark and gluon impact factors in the BFKL approach. Following this procedure we show explicitly that all infrared divergences cancel when renormalized parton densities are considered. We compare our results for the vertex with the former calculation of Refs. [1,2] and, in the case of the quark contribution, clarify the discrepancy present in the literature.

NLO BFKL in gamma* gamma* collisions

We study in the BFKL approach the total hadronic cross section for the collision of two virtual photons for energies in the range of LEP2 and of future linear colliders. The BFKL resummation is done at the next-to-leading order in the BFKL Green's function; photon impact factors are taken instead at the leading order, but with the inclusion of the subleading terms required by invariance under changes of the renormalization scale and of the BFKL scale $s_0$. We compare our results with previous estimations based on a similar kind of approximation.
