Neutron Structure Functions

Neutron structure functions can be extracted from proton and deuteron data and a representation of the deuteron structure. This procedure does not require DIS approximations or quark structure assumptions. We find that the results depend critically on properly accounting for the Q^2 dependence of proton and deuteron data. We interpolate the data to fixed Q^2, and extract the ratio of neutron to proton structure functions. The extracted ratio decreases with increasing x, up to x \approx 0.9, while there are no data available to constrain the behavior at larger x.

Baryon Form Factors of Relativistic Constituent-Quark Models

The electromagnetic and axial form factors of the nucleon and its lowest positive parity excitations, the Delta(1232) and the N*(1440), are calculated with constituent-quark models that are specified by simple algebraic representations of the mass-operator eigenstates. Poincaré covariant current operators are generated by the dynamics from single-quark currents that are covariant under a kinematic subgroup. The dependence of the calculated form factors on the choice of kinematics and on the gross features of the wave functions is illustrated for instant-form, point-form, and front-form kinematics. A simple algebraic form of the orbital ground state wave function, which depends on two parameters, allows a fair description of all the form factors over the empirically accessible range, although with widely different choices of the parameters, which determine the range and shape of the orbital wave function. The neutron electric form factor requires additional features, for instance the presence of mixed symmetry S-state component with 1 -- 2 % probability in the ground state wave function. Instant and front form kinematics demand a spatially extended wave function, whereas in point form kinematics the form factors may be described with a quite compact wave function.

Axial Transition Form Factors and Pion Decay of Baryon Resonances

The pion decay constants of the lowest orbitally excited states of the nucleon and the $Δ(1232)$ along with the corresponding axial transition form factors are calculated with Poincaré covariant constituent-quark models with instant, point and front forms of relativistic kinematics. The model wave functions are chosen such that the calculated electromagnetic and axial form factors of the nucleon represent the empirical values in all three forms of kinematics, when calculated with single-constituent currents. The pion decay widths calculated with the three forms of kinematics are smaller than the empirical values. Front and instant form kinematics provide a similar description, with a slight preference for front form, while the point form values are significantly smaller in the case of the lowest positive parity resonances.

Charge Form Factors of Quark-Model Pions II

Experimental data of the pion charge form factor are well represented by Poincaré invariant constituent-quark phenomenology depending on two parameters, a confinement scale and an effective constituent--quark mass. Pion states are represented by eigenfunctions of mass and spin operators and of the light-front momenta. An effective current density is generated by the dynamics from a null-plane impulse current density. A simple shape of the wave function depending only on the confinement scale is sufficient.

Scaling of Hadronic Form Factors in Point Form Kinematics

The general features of baryon form factors calculated with point form kinematics are derived. With point form kinematics and spectator currents hadronic form factors are functions of $η:={1\over 4}(v_{out}-v_{in})^2$ and, over a range of $η$ values are insensitive to unitary scale transformations of the model wave functions when the extent of the wave function is small compared to the scale defined by the constituent mass, $ \ll 1/m^2$. The form factors are sensitive to the shape of such compact wave functions. Simple 3-quark proton wave functions are employed to illustrate these features. Rational and algebraic model wave functions lead to a reasonable representation of the empirical form factors, while Gaussian wave functions fail. For large values of $η$ point form kinematics with spectator currents leads to power law behavior of the wave functions.

From Light Nuclei to Nuclear Matter. The Role of Relativity?

The success of non-relativistic quantum dynamics in accounting for the binding energies and spectra of light nuclei with masses up to A=10 raises the question whether the same dynamics applied to infinite nuclear matter agrees with the empirical saturation properties of large nuclei. The simple unambiguous relation between few-nucleon and many-nucleon Hamiltonians is directly related to the Galilean covariance of nonrelativistic dynamics. Relations between the irreducible unitary representations of the Galilei and Poincare groups indicate thatthe ``nonrelativistic'' nuclear Hamiltonians may provide sufficiently accurate approximations to Poincare invariant mass operators. In relativistic nuclear dynamics based on suitable Lagrangeans the intrinsic nucleon parity is an explicit, dynamically relevant, degree of freedom and the emphasis is on properties of nuclear matter. The success of this approach suggests the question how it might account for the spectral properties of light nuclei.

Relativistic Quantum Dynamics of Many-Body Systems

Relativistic quantum dynamics requires a unitary representation of the Poincare group on the Hilbert space of states. The dynamics of many-body systems must satisfy cluster separability requirements. In this paper we formulate an abstract framework of four dimensional Euclidean Green functions that can be used to construct relativistic quantum dynamics of N-particle systems consistent with these requirements. This approach should be useful in bridging the gap between few-body dynamics based on phenomenological mass operators and on quantum field theory.

Covariant Quark Model for the Baryons

A family of simply solvable covariant quark models for the baryons is presented. With optimal parameter choices the models reproduce the empirical spectra of the baryons in all flavor sectors to an accuracy of a few percent. Complete spectra are obtained for all states of the strange, charm and beauty hyperons with $L \leq 2$. The magnetic moments and axial coupling constants of the ground state baryons correspond to those of conventional quark models. We construct current-density operators that are consistent with empirical nucleon form factors at low and medium energies.

Poincare Covariant Quark Models of Baryon Form Factors

Poincare covariant quark models of the the nucleon, the $Δ$ resonance and their excitations are explored. The baryon states are represented by eigenfunctions of the four-velocity and a confining mass operator, which reproduces the empirical spectrum up to $\sim$ 1700 MeV to an accuracy of $\sim 6%$. Models of constituent quark currents provide the relations between ground-state properties and transition amplitudes.

Electromagnetic Currents and the Blankenbecler-Sugar Equation

The effective electromagnetic current density for a two-nucleon system that is described by the Blankenbecler-Sugar equation is derived. In addition to the single nucleon currents there are exchange currents of two different origins. The first is the exchange current that is required to compensate for the violation of the continuity equation in the impulse approximation. The second is an exchange current, which arises in the quasipotential reduction from the Bethe-Salpeter equation, and which represents effects of suppressed degrees of freedom. Explicit general expressions are given for both of these exchange currents. The results are applicable to both elastic and inelastic processes.

Vacuum Structures in Hamiltonian Light-Front Dynamics

Hamiltonian light-front dynamics of quantum fields may provide a useful approach to systematic non-perturbative approximations to quantum field theories. We investigate inequivalent Hilbert-space representations of the light-front field algebra in which the stability group of the light-front is implemented by unitary transformations. The Hilbert space representation of states is generated by the operator algebra from the vacuum state. There is a large class of vacuum states besides the Fock vacuum which meet all the invariance requirements. The light-front Hamiltonian must annihilate the vacuum and have a positive spectrum. We exhibit relations of the Hamiltonian to the nontrivial vacuum structure.
