Arctic curves of the four-vertex model

We consider the four-vertex model with a special choice of fixed boundary conditions giving rise to limit shape phenomena. More generally, the considered boundary conditions relate vertex models to scalar products of off-shell Bethe states, boxed plane partitions, and fishnet diagrams in quantum field theory. In the scaling limit, the model exhibits the emergence of an arctic curve separating a central disordered region from six frozen `corners' of ferroelectric or anti-ferroelectric type. We determine the analytic expression of the interface by means of the Tangent Method. We supplement this heuristic method with an alternative, rigorous derivation of the arctic curve. This is based on the exact evaluation of suitable correlation functions, devised to detect spatial transition from order to disorder, in terms of the partition function of some discrete log-gas associated to the orthogonalizing measure of the Hahn polynomials. As a by-product, we also deduce that the arctic curve's fluctuations are governed by the Tracy-Widom distribution.

Third-order phase transition in random tilings

We consider the domino tilings of an Aztec diamond with a cut-off corner of macroscopic square shape and given size, and address the bulk properties of tilings as the size is varied. We observe that the free energy exhibits a third-order phase transition when the cut-off square, increasing in size, reaches the arctic ellipse---the phase separation curve of the original (unmodified) Aztec diamond. We obtain this result by studying the thermodynamic limit of certain nonlocal correlation function of the underlying six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions, the so-called emptiness formation probability (EFP). We consider EFP in two different representations: as a tau-function for Toda chains and as a random matrix model integral. The latter has a discrete measure and a linear potential with hard walls; the observed phase transition shares properties with both Gross-Witten-Wadia and Douglas-Kazakov phase transitions.

On the problem of calculation of correlation functions in the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions

The problem of calculation of correlation functions in the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions is addressed by considering a particular nonlocal correlation function, called row configuration probability. This correlation function can be used as building block for computing various (both local and nonlocal) correlation functions in the model. The row configuration probability is calculated using the quantum inverse scattering method; the final result is given in terms of a multiple integral. The connection with the emptiness formation probability, another nonlocal correlation function which was computed elsewhere using similar methods, is also discussed.

Algebraic arctic curves in the domain-wall six-vertex model

The arctic curve, i.e. the spatial curve separating ordered (or `frozen') and disordered (or `temperate) regions, of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions is discussed for the root-of-unity vertex weights. In these cases the curve is described by algebraic equations which can be worked out explicitly from the parametric solution for this curve. Some interesting examples are discussed in detail. The upper bound on the maximal degree of the equation in a generic root-of-unity case is obtained.

The arctic curve of the domain-wall six-vertex model

The problem of the form of the `arctic' curve of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions in its disordered regime is addressed. It is well-known that in the scaling limit the model exhibits phase-separation, with regions of order and disorder sharply separated by a smooth curve, called the arctic curve. To find this curve, we study a multiple integral representation for the emptiness formation probability, a correlation function devised to detect spatial transition from order to disorder. We conjecture that the arctic curve, for arbitrary choice of the vertex weights, can be characterized by the condition of condensation of almost all roots of the corresponding saddle-point equations at the same, known, value. In explicit calculations we restrict to the disordered regime for which we have been able to compute the scaling limit of certain generating function entering the saddle-point equations. The arctic curve is obtained in parametric form and appears to be a non-algebraic curve in general; it turns into an algebraic one in the so-called root-of-unity cases. The arctic curve is also discussed in application to the limit shape of $q$-enumerated (with $0<q\leq 4$) large alternating sign matrices. In particular, as $q\to 0$ the limit shape tends to a nontrivial limiting curve, given by a relatively simple equation.

The limit shape of large alternating sign matrices

The problem of the limit shape of large alternating sign matrices (ASMs) is addressed by studying the emptiness formation probability (EFP) in the domain-wall six-vertex model. Assuming that the limit shape arises in correspondence to the `condensation' of almost all solutions of the saddle-point equations for certain multiple integral representation for EFP, a conjectural expression for the limit shape of large ASMs is derived. The case of 3-enumerated ASMs is also considered.

Emptiness formation probability in the domain-wall six-vertex model

The emptiness formation probability in the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions is considered. This correlation function allows one to address the problem of limit shapes in the model. We apply the quantum inverse scattering method to calculate the emptiness formation probability for the inhomogeneous model. For the homogeneous model, the result is given both in terms of certain determinant and as a multiple integral representation.

The Arctic Circle Revisited

The problem of limit shapes in the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions is addressed by considering a specially tailored bulk correlation function, the emptiness formation probability. A closed expression of this correlation function is given, both in terms of certain determinant and multiple integral, which allows for a systematic treatment of the limit shapes of the model for full range of values of vertex weights. Specifically, we show that for vertex weights corresponding to the free-fermion line on the phase diagram, the emptiness formation probability is related to a one-matrix model with a triple logarithmic singularity, or Triple Penner model. The saddle-point analysis of this model leads to the Arctic Circle Theorem, and its generalization to the Arctic Ellipses, known previously from domino tilings.

The role of orthogonal polynomials in the six-vertex model and its combinatorial applications

The Hankel determinant representations for the partition function and boundary correlation functions of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions are investigated by the methods of orthogonal polynomial theory. For specific values of the parameters of the model, corresponding to 1-, 2- and 3-enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices (ASMs), these polynomials specialize to classical ones (Continuous Hahn, Meixner-Pollaczek, and Continuous Dual Hahn, respectively). As a consequence, a unified and simplified treatment of ASMs enumerations turns out to be possible, leading also to some new results such as the refined 3-enumerations of ASMs. Furthermore, the use of orthogonal polynomials allows us to express, for generic values of the parameters of the model, the partition function of the (partially) inhomogeneous model in terms of the one-point boundary correlation functions of the homogeneous one.

On two-point boundary correlations in the six-vertex model with DWBC

The six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions (DWBC) on an N x N square lattice is considered. The two-point correlation function describing the probability of having two vertices in a given state at opposite (top and bottom) boundaries of the lattice is calculated. It is shown that this two-point boundary correlator is expressible in a very simple way in terms of the one-point boundary correlators of the model on N x N and (N-1) x (N-1) lattices. In alternating sign matrix (ASM) language this result implies that the doubly refined x-enumerations of ASMs are just appropriate combinations of the singly refined ones.

On the refined 3-enumeration of alternating sign matrices

An explicit expression for the numbers $A(n,r;3)$ describing the refined 3-enumeration of alternating sign matrices is given. The derivation is based on the recent results of Stroganov for the corresponding generating function. As a result, $A(n,r;3)$'s are represented as 1-fold sums which can also be written in terms of terminating ${}_4F_3$ series of argument 1/4.

Square ice, alternating sign matrices and classical orthogonal polynomials

The six-vertex model with Domain Wall Boundary Conditions, or square ice, is considered for particular values of its parameters, corresponding to 1-, 2-, and 3-enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices (ASMs). Using Hankel determinant representations for the partition function and the boundary correlator of homogeneous square ice, it is shown how the ordinary and refined enumerations can be derived in a very simple and straightforward way. The derivation is based on the standard relationship between Hankel determinants and orthogonal polynomials. For the particular sets of parameters corresponding to 1-, 2-, and 3-enumerations of ASMs, the Hankel determinant can be naturally related to Continuous Hahn, Meixner-Pollaczek, and Continuous Dual Hahn polynomials, respectively. This observation allows for a unified and simplified treatment of ASMs enumerations. In particular, along the lines of the proposed approach, we provide a complete solution to the long standing problem of the refined 3-enumeration of AMSs.

Fredholm Determinant Representation for Correlation Functions in XXO Heisenberg Chain

Space and time dependent temepreture correlation fucntions in the Hiesenberg XXO chain are evaluated in the magnetic field. The other name of the model is isotropic xy model in the transverse magnetic field. In the thermodynamic limit correlations in the model are represented as Fredhom determinanat. We expect this to to solve the problem of evaluation of asymptotics of temperature correlations.

Determinant Representation for time and temperature dependent correlation functions in the isotropic XY model in the transverse magnetic field

Astymptotics of temperature correlations is the most dificult problem of stat. mech. Recently it was solved for the impenetrable Bose Gas. The idea is to represent correlation function as $\tau$ function of calssical completely integrable differential equation. Now we start to apply this program to isotropic XY model in the trasnsverse magnetic field. In this paper we are making first step. We representing correlation function as detrminanat of an integral operator.

The Sub-leading Magnetic Deformation of the Tricritical Ising Model in 2D as RSOS Restriction of the Izergin-Korepin Model

We compute the $S$-matrix of the Tricritical Ising Model perturbed by the subleading magnetic operator using Smirnov's RSOS reduction of the Izergin-Korepin model. We discuss some features of the scattering theory we obtain, in particular a non trivial implementation of crossing-symmetry, interesting connections between the asymptotic behaviour of the amplitudes, the possibility of introducing generalized statistics, and the monodromy properties of the OPE of the unperturbed Conformal Field Theory.

On the S-matrix of the Sub-leading Magnetic Deformation of the Tricritical Ising Model in Two Dimensions

We compute the $S$-matrix of the Tricritical Ising Model perturbed by the subleading magnetic operator using Smirnov's RSOS reduction of the Izergin-Korepin model. The massive model contains kink excitations which interpolate between two degenerate asymmetric vacua. As a consequence of the different structure of the two vacua, the crossing symmetry is implemented in a non-trivial way. We use finite-size techniques to compare our results with the numerical data obtained by the Truncated Conformal Space Approach and find good agreement.
