A comprehensive search for the Θ^+ pentaquark on the lattice

We study spin 1/2 isoscalar and isovector, even and odd parity candidates for the $Θ^+(1540)$ pentaquark particle using large scale lattice QCD simulations. Previous lattice works led to inconclusive results because so far it has not been possible to unambiguously identify the known scattering spectrum and tell whether additionally a genuine pentaquark state also exists. Here we carry out this analysis using several possible wave functions (operators). Linear combinations of those have a good chance of spanning both the scattering and pentaquark states. Our operator basis is the largest in the literature, and it also includes spatially non-trivial ones with unit orbital angular momentum. The cross correlator we compute is 14$\times$14 with 60 non-vanishing elements. We can clearly distinguish the lowest scattering state(s) in both parity channels up to above the expected location of the pentaquark, but we find no trace of the latter. Based on that we conclude that there are most probably no pentaquark bound states at our quark masses, corresponding to $m_π$=400--630 MeV. However, we cannot rule out the existence of a pentaquark state at the physical quark mass corresponding to $m_π$=135 MeV or pentaquarks with a more exotic wave function.

The status of pentaquark spectroscopy on the lattice

The present work is a summary of the status of lattice pentaquark calculations. After a pedagogic introduction to the basics of lattice hadron spectroscopy we give a critical comparison of results presently available in the literature. Special emphasis is put on presenting some of the possible pitfalls of these calculations. In particular we discuss at length the choice of the hadronic operators and the separation of genuine five-quark states from meson-baryon scattering states.

Pentaquark hadrons from lattice QCD

We study spin 1/2 isoscalar and isovector candidates in both parity channels for the recently discovered Θ^+(1540) pentaquark particle in quenched lattice QCD. Our analysis takes into account all possible uncertainties, such as statistical, finite size and quenching errors when performing the chiral and continuum extrapolations and we have indications that our signal is separated from scattering states. The lowest mass that we find in the I^P=0^- channel is in complete agreement with the experimental value of the Θ^+ mass. On the other hand, the lowest mass state in the opposite parity I^P=0^+ channel is much higher. Our findings suggests that the parity of the Θ^+ is negative.

The QCD equation of state at finite T/μon the lattice

We present N_t=4 lattice results for the equation of state of 2+1 flavour staggered, dynamical QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential. We use the overlap improving multi-parameter reweighting technique to extend the equation of state for non-vanishing chemical potentials. The results are obtained along the line of constant physics. Our physical parameters extend in temperature and baryon chemical potential upto \approx 500-600 MeV.

Lattice QCD at non-vanishing density: phase diagram, equation of state

We propose a method to study lattice QCD at non-vanishing temperature (T) and chemical potential (μ). We use n_f=2+1 dynamical staggered quarks with semi-realistic masses on L_t=4 lattices. The critical endpoint (E) of QCD on the Re(μ)-T plane is located. We calculate the pressure (p), the energy density (ε) and the baryon density (n_B) of QCD at non-vanishing T and μ.

Lattice study of the Coleman--Weinberg mass in the SU(2)-Higgs model

Radiative symmetry breaking is a well known phenomenon in perturbation theory. We study the problem in a non-perturbative framework, i.e. lattice simulations. The example of the bosonic sector of the SU(2)-Higgs model is considered. We determine the minimal scalar mass which turns out to be higher than the mass value given by 1-loop continuum perturbation theory.

The QCD equation of state at finite T and μ

We calculate the pressure (p), the energy density (ε) and the baryon density (n_B) of QCD at finite temperatures (T) and chemical potentials (μ). The recently proposed overlap improving multi-parameter reweighting technique is used to determine observables at nonvanishing chemical potentials. Our results are obtained by studying n_f=2+1 dynamical staggered quarks with semi-realistic masses on N_t=4 lattices.

Four-dimensional lattice results on the MSSM electroweak phase transition

We present the results of our large scale 4-dimensional (4d) lattice simulations for the MSSM electroweak phase transition (EWPT). We carried out infinite volume and continuum limit extrapolations and found a transition whose strength agrees well with perturbation theory. We determined the properties of the bubble wall that are important for a successful baryogenesis.

Electroweak Phase Transition in the MSSM: 4-Dimensional Lattice Simulations

Recent lattice results have shown that there is no Standard Model (SM) electroweak phase transition (EWPT) for Higgs boson masses above \approx 72 GeV, which is below the present experimental limit. According to perturbation theory and 3-dimensional (3d) lattice simulations there could be an EWPT in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) that is strong enough for baryogenesis up to m_h \approx 105 GeV. In this letter we present the results of our large scale 4-dimensional (4d) lattice simulations for the MSSM EWPT. We carried out infinite volume and continuum limits and found a transition whose strength agrees well with perturbation theory, allowing MSSM electroweak baryogenesis at least up to m_h = 103 \pm 4 GeV. We determined the properties of the bubble wall that are important for a successful baryogenesis.

The PMS project: Poor Man's Supercomputer

We briefly describe the Poor Man's Supercomputer (PMS) project carried out at Eotvos University, Budapest. The goal was to develop a cost effective, scalable, fast parallel computer to perform numerical calculations of physical problems that can be implemented on a lattice with nearest neighbour interactions. To this end we developed the PMS architecture using PC components and designed a special, low cost communication hardware and the driver software for Linux OS. Our first implementation of PMS includes 32 nodes (PMS1). The performance of PMS1 was tested by Lattice Gauge Theory simulations. Using SU(3) pure gauge theory or bosonic MSSM on PMS1 we obtained 3$/Mflop and 0.45$Mflop price-to-sustained performance for double and single precision operations, respectively. The design of the special hardware and the communication driver are freely available upon request for non-profit organizations.

Electroweak phase transition: recent results

Recent results of four-dimensional (4d) lattice simulations on the finite temperature electroweak phase transition (EWPT) are discussed. The phase transition is of first order in the SU(2)-Higgs model below the end point Higgs mass 66.5$\pm$1.4 GeV. For larger masses a rapid cross-over appears. This result completely agrees with the results of the dimensional reduction approach. Including the full Standard Model (SM) perturbatively the end point is at 72.1$\pm$1.4 GeV. Combined with recent LEP Higgs mass lower bounds, this excludes any EWPT in the SM. A one-loop calculation of the static potential makes possible a precise comparison of the lattice and perturbative results. Recent 4d lattice studies of the Minimal Supersymmetric SM (MSSM) are also mentioned.

The endpoint of the first-order phase transition of the SU(2) gauge-Higgs model on a 4-dimensional isotropic lattice

We study the first-order finite-temperature electroweak phase transition of the SU(2) gauge-Higgs model defined on a 4-dimensional isotropic lattice with temporal extension N_t=2. Finite-size scaling study of Lee-Yang zeros yields the value of the Higgs self coupling of the endpoint at lambda_c=0.00116(16). An independent analysis of Binder cumulant gives a consistent value for the endpoint. Combined with our zero-temperature measurement of Higgs and W boson masses, this leads to M_{H,c}=73.3 +- 6.4 GeV for the critical Higgs boson mass beyond which the electroweak transition turns into a crossover.

End point of the electroweak phase transition

We study the hot electroweak phase transition (EWPT) by 4-dimensional lattice simulations on lattices with symmetric and asymmetric lattice spacings and give the phase diagram. A continuum extrapolation is done. We find first order phase transition for Higgs-boson masses $m_H<66.5 \pm 1.4$ GeV. Above this end point a rapid cross-over occurs. Our result agrees with that of the dimensional reduction approach. It also indicates that the fermionic sector of the Standard Model (SM) may be included perturbatively. We get for the SM end point $72.4 \pm 1.7$ GeV. Thus, the LEP Higgs-boson mass lower bound excludes any EWPT in the SM.

The strength of the electroweak phase transition at $m_H \approx$ 80 GeV

In this letter we present the results of our numerical simulations for the finite temperature electroweak phase transition using the SU(2)-Higgs model on four-dimensional lattices at $m_H \approx 80$ GeV. The temporal extension $L_t=2$ is used for asymmetric lattice spacings with an asymmetry parameter $a_s/a_t \approx 4$. The measured thermodynamical quantities (interface tension, jump of the order parameter and latent heat) suggest that the phase transition is of very weakly first order.

Perturbative and non-perturbative studies of the SU(2)-Higgs model on lattices with asymmetric lattice spacings

We present a calculation of the O(g^2,λ) perturbative corrections to the coupling anisotropies of the SU(2)-Higgs model on lattices with asymmetric lattice spacings. These corrections are obtained by a one-loop calculation requiring the rotational invariance of the gauge and Higgs boson propagators in the continuum limit. The coupling anisotropies are also determined from numerical simulations of the model on appropriate lattices. The one-loop perturbation theory and the simulation results agree with high accuracy. It is demonstrated that rotational invariance is also restored for the static potential determined from space-space and space-time Wilson loops.

The end point of the first-order phase transition of the SU(2) gauge-Higgs model on a four-dimensional isotropic lattice

We report results of a study of the end point of the electroweak phase transition of the SU(2) gauge-Higgs model defined on a four-dimensional isotropic lattice with N_t=2. Finite-size scaling study of Lee-Yang zeros yields lambda_c=0.00116(16) for the end point. Combined with a zero-temperature measurement of Higgs and W boson masses, this leads to M_{H,c}=68.2+-6.6 GeV for the critical Higgs boson mass. An independent analysis of Binder cumulant gives a consistent value lambda_c=0.00102(3) for the end point.
