General Relativistic Razor-Thin Disks with Magnetically Polarized Matter

The origin of magnetic fields in the universe still remains unknown and constitutes one of the most intriguing questions in astronomy and astrophysics. Their significance is enormous since they have a strong influence on many astrophysical phenomena. In regards of this motivation, theoretical models of galactic disks with sources of magnetic field may contribute to understand the physics behind them. Inspired by this, we present a new family of analytical models for thin disks composed by magnetized material. The solutions are axially symmetric, conformastatic and are obtained by solving the Einstein-Maxwell Field Equations for continuum media without the test field approximation, and assuming that the sources are razor-thin disk of magnetically polarized matter. We find analytical expressions for the surface energy density, the pressure, the polarization vector, the electromagnetic fields, the mass and the rotational velocity for circular orbits, for two particular solutions. In each case, the energy-momentum tensor agrees with the energy conditions and also the convergence of the mass for all the solutions is proved. Since the solutions are well-behaved, they may be used to model astrophysical thin disks, and also may contribute as initial data in numerical simulations. In addition, the process to obtain the solutions is described in detail, which may be used as a guide to find solutions with magnetized material in General Relativity.

Numerical general relativistic MHD with magnetically polarized matter

The magnetically polarized matter in astrophysical systems may be relevant in some magnetically dominated regions. For instance, the funnel that is generated in some highly magnetized disks configurations whereby relativistic jets are thought to spread, or in pulsars where the fluids are subject to very intense magnetic fields. With the aim of dealing with magnetic media in the astrophysical context, we present for the first time the conservative form of the GRMHD equations with a non-zero magnetic polarization vector $m^μ$. Then, we follow the Anile method to compute the eigenvalue structure in the case where the magnetic polarization is parallel to the magnetic field, and it is parametrized by the magnetic susceptibility $χ_m$. This approximation allows us to describe diamagnetic fluids, for which $χ_m<0$, and paramagnetic fluids where $χ_m>0$. The theoretical results were implemented in the CAFE code to study the role of the magnetic polarization in some 1D Riemann problems. We found that independently of the initial condition, the first waves that appear in the numerical solutions are faster in diamagnetic materials than in paramagnetic ones. Moreover, the constant states between the waves change notably for different magnetic susceptibilities. All these effects are more appreciable if the magnetic pressure is much bigger than the fluid pressure. Additionally, with the aim of analysing a magnetic media in a strong gravitational field, we carry out for the first time the magnetized Michel accretion of a magnetically polarized fluid. With this test, we found that the numerical solution is effectively maintained over time ($t>4000$), and that the global convergence of the code is $\gtrsim$ 2 for $χ_{m}\lesssim 0.005$, for all the magnetic field strength $β$ we considered.

Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion in the presence of small rigid bodies around a black hole

We study the relativistic Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion onto a Schwarzschild black hole (BH), which is surrounded by rigid and small, randomly distributed, bodies. These bodies are idealized representations of substructure like stars passing close to the BH, bubbles created by stellar winds or cold clumps. We explore cases where the filling factor of these bodies is small. The flow is assumed to be adiabatic and move supersonically towards the black hole. The interaction with these rigid obstacles transforms ram pressure of the flow into thermal pressure through bow shocks, slowing down the flow and making the accreting gas turbulent. As a consequence, although the flow reaches a statistically-steady state, the accretion rate presents some variability. For a flow Mach number at infinity of 4, a few of these objects (5 - 10) are enough to increase the accretion rate about 50% over the accretion rate without bodies, even though the gas is adiabatic and the filling factor of the obstacles is small.

MAGNUS: A new resistive MHD code with heat flow terms

We present a new magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code for the simulation of wave propagation in the solar atmosphere, under the effects of electrical resistivity, but not dominant, and heat transference in a uniform 3D grid. The code is based on the finite volume method combined with the HLLE and HLLC approximate Riemann solvers, which use different slope limiters like MINMOD, MC, and WENO5. In order to control the growth of the divergence of the magnetic field, due to numerical errors, we apply the Flux Constrained Transport method, which is described in detail to understand how the resistive terms are included in the algorithm. In our results, it is verified that this method preserves the divergence of the magnetic fields within the machine round-off error. For the validation of the accuracy and efficiency of the schemes implemented in the code, we present some numerical tests in 1D and 2D for the ideal MHD. Later, we show one test for the resistivity in a magnetic reconnection process and one for the thermal conduction, where the temperature is advected by the magnetic field lines. Moreover, we display two numerical problems associated with the MHD wave propagation. The first one corresponds to a 3D evolution of a vertical velocity pulse at the photosphere-transition-corona region, while the second one consists in a 2D simulation of a transverse velocity pulse in a coronal loop.

Relativistic Static Thin Disks of Polarized Matter

An infinite family of exact solutions of the electrovacuum Einstein-Maxwell equations is presented. The family is static, axially symmetric and describe thin disks composed by electrically polarized material in a conformastatic spacetime. The form of the conformastatic metric allows us to write down the metric functions and the electromagnetic potentials in terms of a solution of the Laplace equation. We find a general expression for the surface energy density of the disk, the pressure, the polarization vector, the electromagnetic fields and the velocity rotation for circular orbits. As an example, we present the first model of the family and show the behavior of the different physical variables.

Ideal Magnetohydrodynamics with Radiative Terms: Energy Conditions

Nowadays, the magnetic and radiation fields are very important to understand the matter accretion into compact objects, the dynamics of binary systems, the equilibrium configurations of neutron stars, the photon diffusion, etc. The energy and the momentum associated to these fields, along with the matter one, need to satisfy some conditions that guarantee an appropriate physical behavior of the source and its gravitational field. Based on this fact, we present the energy conditions for a perfect fluid with magnetic and radiation field, in which the radiation part of the energy-momentum tensor is assumed to be approximately isotropic, in accordance with the optically thick regime. In order to find these conditions, the stress tensor of the system is written in an orthonormal basis in which it becomes diagonal, and the energy conditions are computed through contractions of the energy-momentum tensor with the four velocity vector of an arbitrary observer. Finally, the conditions for a magnetized fluid are presented as a particular case in which the radiation contribution is zero.

On the conservation of the Jacobi integral in the post-Newtonian circular restricted three-body problem

In the present paper, using the first-order approximation of the $n$-body Lagrangian (derived on the basis of the post-Newtonian gravitational theory of Einstein, Infeld, and Hoffman), we explicitly write down the equations of motion for the planar circular restricted three-body problem. Additionally, with some simplified assumptions, we obtain two formulas for estimating the values of the mass/distance and velocity/speed of light ratios appropriate for a given post-Newtonian approximation. We show that the formulas derived in the present study, lead to a good numerical conservation of the Jacobi constant and allow for an approximate equivalence between the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian approaches at the same post-Newtonian order. Accordingly, the dynamics of the system is analyzed in terms of the Poincaré sections method and Lyapunov exponents, finding that for specific values of the Jacobi constant the dynamics can be either chaotic or regular. Our results suggest that the chaoticity of the post-Newtonian system is slightly in- creased in comparison with its Newtonian counterpart.

Pseudo-Newtonian planar circular restricted 3-body problem

We study the dynamics of the planar circular restricted three-body problem in the context of a pseudo-Newtonian approximation. By using the Fodor-Hoenselaers-Perjés procedure, we perform an expansion in the mass potential of a static massive spherical source up to the first non-Newtonian term, giving place to a gravitational potential that includes first-order general relativistic effects. With this result, we model a system composed by two pseudo-Newtonian primaries describing circular orbits around their common center of mass, and a test particle orbiting the system in the equatorial plane. The dynamics of the new system of equations is studied in terms of the Poincaré section method and the Lyapunov exponents, where the introduction of a new parameter $ε$, allows us to observe the transition from the Newtonian to the pseudo-Newtonian regime. We show that when the Jacobian constant is fixed, a chaotic orbit in the Newtonian regime can be either chaotic or regular in the pseudo-Newtonian approach. As a general result, we find that most of the pseudo-Newtonian configurations are less stable than their Newtonian equivalent.

The Energy-Momentum Tensor for a Dissipative Fluid in General Relativity

Considering the growing interest of the astrophysicist community in the study of dissipative fluids with the aim of getting a more realistic description of the universe, we present in this paper a physical analysis of the energy-momentum tensor of a viscous fluid with heat flux. We introduce the general form of this tensor and, using the approximation of small velocity gradients, we relate the stresses of the fluid with the viscosity coefficients, the shear tensor and the expansion factor. Exploiting these relations, we can write the stresses in terms of the extrinsic curvature of the normal surface to the 4-velocity vector of the fluid, and we can also establish a connection between the perfect fluid and the symmetries of the spacetime. On the other hand, we calculate the energy conditions for a dissipative fluid through contractions of the energy-momentum tensor with the 4-velocity vector of an arbitrary observer. This method is interesting because it allows us to compute the conditions in a reasonable easy way and without considering any approximation or restriction on the energy-momentum tensor.

Non Axisymmetric Relativistic Wind Accretion with Velocity Gradients onto a Rotating Black Hole

We model, for the first time, the Bondi-Hoyle accretion of a fluid with velocity gradients onto a Kerr black hole, by numerically solving the fully relativistic hydrodynamics equations. Specifically, we consider a supersonic ideal gas, which has velocity gradients perpendicular to the relative motion. We measure the mass and specific angular accretion rates to illustrate whether the fluid presents unstable patterns or not. The initial parameters, we consider in this work, are the velocity gradient $ε_{v}$, the black hole spin $a$, the asymptotic Mach number ${\cal M}_{\infty}$ and adiabatic index $Γ$. We show that the flow accretion reaches a fairly stationary regime, unlike in the Newtonian case, where significant fluctuations of the mass and angular momentum accretion rates are found. On the other hand, we consider a special case where both density and velocity gradients of the fluid are taken into account. The spin of the black hole and the asymptotic Newtonian Mach number, for this case, are $a=0.98$ and ${\cal M}_{\infty}=1$, respectively. A kind of flip-flop behavior is found at the early times; nevertheless, the system also reaches a steady state.

An eclipsing binary black hole candidate system in the blazar Mrk 421

Removing outbursts from multiwavelength light curves of the blazar Mrk~421, we construct outburstless time series for this system. A model-independent power spectrum light curve analysis in the optical, hard X-ray and gamma-rays for this outburstless state and also the full light-curves, show clear evidence for a periodicity of ~ 310 days across all wavelengths studied. A subsequent full maximum likelihood analysis fitting an eclipse model confirms a periodicity of 310 \pm 1 days. The power spectrum of the signal in the outburstless state of the source does not follow a flicker noise behaviour and so, the system producing it is not self-organised. This and the fact that the periodicity is better defined in the outburstless state, strongly suggests that it is not produced by any internal physical processes associated to the central engine. The simplest physical mechanism to which this periodicity could be ascribed is a dynamical effect produced by an orbiting supermassive black hole companion eclipsing the central engine. Interestingly, the optimal eclipse model infers a brightness enhancement of (136.4 \pm 20 )%, suggesting an eclipse resulting in a gravitational lensing brightening. Consisting with this interpretation, the eclipse occurs for only ( 9.7 \pm 0.2)% of the orbital period.

Newtonian CAFE: a new ideal MHD code to study the solar atmosphere

We present a new code designed to solve the equations of classical ideal magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) in three dimensions, submitted to a constant gravitational field. The purpose of the code centers on the analysis of solar phenomena within the photosphere-corona region. We present 1D and 2D standard tests to demonstrate the quality of the numerical results obtained with our code. As solar tests we present the transverse oscillations of Alfvenic pulses in coronal loops using a 2.5D model, and as 3D tests we present the propagation of impulsively generated MHD-gravity waves and vortices in the solar atmosphere. The code is based on high-resolution shock-capturing methods, uses the HLLE flux formula combined with Minmod, MC and WENO5 reconstructors. The divergence free magnetic field constraint is controlled using the Flux Constrained Transport method.

Relativistic Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton Accretion onto a Rotating Black-Hole: Density Gradients

In this work, we present, for the first time, a numerical study of the Bondi-Hoyle accretion with density gradients in the fully relativistic regime. In this context, we consider accretion onto a Kerr Black Hole (BH) of a supersonic ideal gas, which has density gradients perpendicular to the relative motion. The set of parameters of interest in this study are the Mach number, M, the spin of the BH, a, and the density-gradient parameter of the gas, ρ . We show that, unlike in the Newtonian case, all the studied cases, especially those with density gradient, approach a stationary flow pattern. To illustrate that the system reaches steady state we calculate the mass and angular momentum accretion rates on a spherical surface located almost at the event horizon. In the particular case of M = 1, ρ = 0.5 and BH spin a = 0.5, we observe a disk-like configuration surrounding the BH. Finally, we present the gas morphology and some of its properties.

CAFE: A New Relativistic MHD Code

We introduce CAFE, a new independent code designed to solve the equations of Relativistic ideal Magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) in 3D. We present the standard tests for a RMHD code and for the Relativistic Hydrodynamics (RHD) regime since we have not reported them before. The tests include the 1D Riemann problems related to blast waves, head-on collision of streams and states with transverse velocities, with and without magnetic field, which is aligned or transverse, constant or discontinuous across the initial discontinuity. Among the 2D and 3D tests, without magnetic field we include the 2D Riemann problem, a one dimensional shock tube along a diagonal, the high speed Emery wind tunnel, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, a set of jets and a 3D spherical blast wave, whereas in the presence of a magnetic field we show the magnetic rotor, the cylindrical explosion, a case of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and a 3D magnetic field advection loop. The code uses High Resolution Shock Capturing methods and we present the error analysis for a combination that uses the HLLE flux formula combined with linear, PPM and fifth order WENO reconstructors. We use the flux-CT and the divergence cleaning methods to control the divergence free magnetic field constraint.

Rotation curves of ultralight BEC dark matter halos with rotation

We study the rotation curves of ultralight BEC dark matter halos. These halos are long lived solutions of initially rotating BEC fluctuations. In order to study the implications of the rotation characterizing these long-lived configurations we consider the particular case of a boson mass $m=10^{-23}\mathrm{eV/c}^2$ and no self-interaction. We find that these halos successfully fit samples of rotation curves (RCs) of LSB galaxies.

Horizon growth of supermassive black hole seeds fed with collisional dark matter

We present the accretion of collisional dark matter on a supermassive black hole seed. The analysis is based on the numerical solution of the fully coupled system of Einstein-Euler equations for spherically symmetric flow, where the dark matter is modeled as a perfect fluid that obeys an ideal gas equation of state. As the black hole actually grows, the accretion rate of dark matter corresponds to the black hole apparent horizon growth rate. We analyse cases with infall velocity as high as $0.5c$ and an environment density of $100M_{\odot}/\mathrm{pc}^3$, which are rather extreme conditions. Being the radial flux the maximum accretion case, our results show that the accretion of an ideal gas, eventually collisional dark matter, does not contribute significantly to SMBH masses. This result favors models predicting SMBHs were formed already with supermasses. We show that despite the fact that we are solving the full general relativistic system, for the parameter space studied our results are surprisingly similar to those obtained using the Bondi formula, which somehow certifies its use as a good approximation of a fully evolving space-time with spherical symmetry at short scales at least for dark matter densities. Additionally, we study the density profile of the gas and find that the presence of SMBHs redistributes the gas near the event horizon with a cuspy profile, whereas beyond a small fraction of a parsec it is not-cuspy anymore.

PBH mass growth through radial accretion during the radiation dominated era

We model the radial accretion of radiation on Primordial Black Holes (PBH) by numerically solving Einstein's equations coupled to an ultrarelativistic ideal gas with equation of state $p=ρ/3$. We calculate the final mass of a black hole by the integration of the accreted radiation energy density during the leptonic era between $t\sim10^{-4}s$ to $t\sim 10^2s$ after the Big Bang. Our results indicate that small PBHs with initial masses between $10^{-4}$ to $1M_{\odot}$ may grow up to hundreds of solar masses, and thus can be SMBH seeds. On the other hand, PBHs formed at $t\sim 1s$ with initial mass between 900 and $\sim 980M_{\odot}$, by the time $t\sim 100s$ show masses of $10^4$ to $10^6M_{\odot}$ which are masses of seeds or already formed SMBHs. The fact that we consider only radial flow implies that our results work well as limiting cases, and it is expected that under more general scenarios the accretion rates may change significantly. Nevertheless we show that it is possible that SMBHs can be PBHs that grew due to the accretion of radiation.

Rotation curves of rotating galactic BEC dark matter halos

We present the dynamics of rotating Bose Condensate galactic dark matter halos, made of an ultralight spinless boson. We restrict to the case of adding axisymmetric rigid rotation to initially spherically symmetric structures and show there are three regimes: i) small angular momentum, that basically retains the drawbacks of spherically symmetric halos related to compactness and failure at explaining galactic RCs, ii) an intermediate range of values of angular momentum that allow the existence of long-lived structures with acceptable RC profiles, and iii) high angular momentum, in which the structure is dispersed away by rotation. We also present in detail the new code used to solve the Gross-Pitaevskii Poisson system of equations in three dimensions.
