Cepheid Calibration of the Peak Brightness of SNe Ia -- IX. SN 1989B in NGC 3627

(Abridged) Repeated imaging observations have been made of NGC 3627 with the HST in 1997/98, over an interval of 58 days. Images were obtained on 12 epochs in the F555W band and on five epochs in the F814W band. The galaxy hosted the prototypical, `Branch normal', type Ia supernova SN 1989B. A total of 83 variables have been found, of which 68 are definite Cepheid variables with periods ranging from 75 days to 3.85 days. The de-reddened distance modulus is determined to be (m-M)_0= 30.22+/-0.12 (internal uncertainty) using a subset of the Cepheid data whose reddening and error parameters are secure. The photometric data of Wells et al. (1994), combined with the Cepheid data for NGC 3627 give M_B(max)= -19.36+/-0.18 and M_V(max)= -19.34+/-0.16 for SN 1989B. Combined with the previous six calibrations in this program, plus two additional calibrations determined by others gives the mean absolute magnitudes at maximum of = -19.48+/-0.07 and = -19.48 +/-0.07 for `Branch normal' SNe Ia at this interim stage in the calibration program. The second parameter correlations of M(max) of blue SNe Ia with decay rate, color at maximum, and Hubble type are re-investigated. The dependence of on decay rate is non-linear, showing a minimum for decay rates between 1.0< Delta m_15 <1.6. Magnitudes corrected for decay rate show no dependence on Hubble type, but a dependence on color remains. Correcting both the fiducial sample of 34 SNe Ia with decay-rate data and the current 8 calibrating SNe Ia for the correlation with decay rate as well as color gives H_0= 60+/-2 (internal) km/s/Mpc, in both B and V. The same value to within 4% is obtained if only the SNe Ia in spirals (without second parameter corrections) are considered.

HST FOC spectroscopy of the NLR of NGC 4151. I. Gas kinematics

We present the results from a detailed kinematic analysis of both ground-based, and Hubble Space Telescope/Faint Object Camera long-slit spectroscopy at sub-arcsec spatial resolution, of the narrow-line region of NGC 4151. In agreement with previous work, the extended emission gas (R > 4") is found to be in normal rotation in the galactic plane, a behaviour that we were able to trace even across the nuclear region, where the gas is strongly disturbed by the interaction with the radio jet, and connects smoothly with the large scale rotation defined by the neutral gas emission. The HST data, at 0.029" spatial resolution, allow us for the first time to truly isolate the kinematic behaviour of the individual clouds in the inner narrow-line region. We find that, underlying the perturbations introduced by the radio ejecta, the general velocity field can still be well represented by planar rotation down to a radius of ~ 0.5" (30 pc), distance at which the rotation curve has its turnover. The most striking result that emerges from our analysis is that the galaxy potential derived fitting the rotation curve changes from a "dark halo" at the ENLR distances to dominated by the central mass concentration in the NLR, with an almost Keplerian fall-off in the 1"< R < 4" interval. The observed velocity of the gas at 0.5" implies a mass of M ~ 10E9 M(sol) within the inner 60 pc. The presence of a turnover in the rotation curve indicates that this central mass concentration is extended. The first measured velocity point (outside the region saturated by the nucleus) would imply an enclosed mass of ~ 5E7 M(sol) within R ~ 0.15" (10 pc) which represents an upper limit to any nuclear point mass.

The Globular Cluster System in the Inner Region of M87

1057 globular cluster candidates have been identified in a WFPC2 image of the inner region of M87. The Globular Cluster Luminosity Function (GCLF) can be well fit by a Gaussian profile with a mean value of m_V^0=23.67 +/- 0.07 mag and sigma=1.39 +/- 0.06 mag (compared to m_V^0=23.74 mag and sigma=1.44 mag from an earlier study using the same data by Whitmore it et al. 1995). The GCLF in five radial bins is found to be statistically the same at all points, showing no clear evidence of dynamical destruction processes based on the luminosity function (LF), in contradiction to the claim by Gnedin (1997). Similarly, there is no obvious correlation between the half light radius of the clusters and the galactocentric distance. The core radius of the globular cluster density distribution is R_c=56'', considerably larger than the core of the stellar component (R_c=6.8''). The mean color of the cluster candidates is V-I=1.09 mag which corresponds to an average metallicity of Fe/H = -0.74 dex. The color distribution is bimodal everywhere, with a blue peak at V-I=0.95 mag and a red peak at V-I=1.20 mag. The red population is only 0.1 magnitude bluer than the underlying galaxy, indicating that these clusters formed late in the metal enrichment history of the galaxy and were possibly created in a burst of star/cluster formation 3-6 Gyr after the blue population. We also find that both the red and the blue cluster distributions have a more elliptical shape (Hubble type E3.5) than the nearly spherical galaxy. The average half light radius of the clusters is ~2.5 pc which is comparable to the 3 pc average effective radius of the Milky Way clusters, though the red candidates are ~20% smaller than the blue ones.

The origin of the Narrow Line Region of Mrk 3: an overpressured jet cocoon

We have obtained HST FOC long-slit optical spectroscopy of the Narrow Line Region of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3. In the region cospatial with the radio-jet the velocity field is highly perturbed and shows two velocity systems separated by as much as 1700 km/s. We interpret this to be the consequence of the rapid expansion of a cocoon of hot gas, shocked and heated by the radio-emitting outflow, which compresses and accelerates the ambient gas. The NLR itself is essentially a cylindrical shell expanding supersonically. From the size and velocity of the expanding region, we derive an upper limit to the radio-source age, ~< 1.5 E5 years, and a lower limit for the jet power, ~> 2 E42 erg/s required to inflate the cocoon and estimate that the jet minimum advance speed is 3 E-3 pc per year. The total kinetic energy of the high velocity NLR gas can be estimated as ~6 E54 erg, comparable to the total energy carried by the jet over its lifetime and this quantitatively supports the idea that the NLR gas is accelerated by the jet. If the advance speed of Mrk 3 is representative of the Seyfert population then these sources must also be short lived and probably recurrent. The jet kinetic luminosity of Mrk 3 is between 2 and 3 orders of magnitude smaller than that derived for radio-loud AGNs with similar emission-line luminosity. On the other hand, the fraction of jet power dissipated in radio-emission is similar. We speculate that the main distinction between radio-quiet and radio-loud AGN is ascribed to a difference in jet power rather than to a different efficiency in synchrotron emission production.

Jet driven motions in the Narrow Line region of NGC1068

We have obtained HST FOC f/48 long-slit spectroscopy of the inner 4" of the Narrow Line Region of NGC 1068 between 3500-5400A with a spectral resolution of 1.78A/pixel. At a spatial scale of 0.0287" per pixel these data provide an order of magnitude improvement in resolution over previous ground based spectra and allow us to trace the interaction between the radio jet and the gas in the NLR. Our results show that, within +/-0.5" of the radio-jet the emission lines are kinematically disturbed and split into two components whose velocity separation is 1500 km/sec. The filaments associated with the radio lobe also show a redshifted kinematic disturbance of the order of 300 km/sec which probably is a consequence of the expansion of the radio plasma. Furthermore, the material enveloping the radio-jet is in a much higher ionization state than that of the surrounding NLR gas. The highest excitation is coincident with the jet axis where emission in the coronal line of [FeVII] 3769A is detected and the HeII 4686A is strong but where [OII] 3727A is depressed. This large localized increase in ionization on the jet axis is accompanied by the presence of an excess continuum. Because the electron density is substantially larger in the jet compared to the surrounding NLR, these results can only be explained if there is a more intense ionizing continuum associated with the jet. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways which include an intrinsically anisotropic nuclear radiation field, a reduced gas covering factor or the presence of a local ionization source. The morphology, kinematics and, possibly, the ionization structure of the NLR in the vicinity of the jet of NGC 1068 are a direct consequence of the interaction with the radio outflow.

The Narrow Line Region of NGC 4151: a Turbulent Cauldron

We present the first results of the Hubble Space Telescope/Faint Object Camera long-slit spectroscopy of the inner 8" of the Narrow Line Region of NGC 4151 at a spatial resolution of 0".029. The emission gas is characterized by an underlying general orderly behaviour, consistent with galactic rotation, over which are superposed kinematically distinct and strongly localized emission structures. High velocity components shifted up to ~ 1500 km/s from the systemic velocity are seen, associated with individual clouds located preferentially along the edges of the radio knots. Off-nuclear blue continuum emission is also observed, associated with the brightest emission line clouds. Emission line ratios like [NeIII]3869/[OII]3727, and [OII]3727/Hbeta are observed to vary substantially between individual clouds. We advance the general picture that, as in other Seyfert galaxies observed with HST (e.g., NGC 1068, Mrk 573), the interaction of the radio jet with the ambient gas strongly influences both the morphology and the physical conditions of the NLR.

Is there really a super-massive black hole in M87?

We present the first HST long-slit spectrum of a gaseous disk around a candidate super-massive black-hole. The results of this study on the kinematics of the gaseous disk in M87 are a considerable improvement in both spatial resolution and accuracy over previous observations and requires a projected mass of M_{BH}(sin i)^2 = (2.0+/- 0.5) 10^9 M_{sun} (M_{BH}=3.2 10^9 M_{sun} for a disk inclination i=52deg) concentrated within a sphere whose radius is less than 0.05" (3.5 pc) to explain the observed rotation curve. The kinematics of the ionized gas is well described by a thin disk in keplerian motion. A lower limit to the mass-to-light ratio of this region is M/L_{V}~110, significantly strengthening the claim that this mass is due to the presence of a central black-hole in M87.

H_0 from HST

HST has so far provided Cepheid distances to nine galaxies. Although not sufficient yet to determine the distance of the extended Virgo cluster, they are decisive for the distance scale in two ways. (1) Seven of the galaxies contribute to a much improved calibration of the Tully-Fisher relation. Applying this to a complete sample of Virgo spirals one obtains a cluster distance of (m-M)=31.79 +/- 0.09. Other distance indicators support this value. The adopted linear distance of 22.0 +/- 0.8 Mpc combined with the cluster velocity of 1178 +/- 32 km s^-1 (in the CMB frame) gives H_0=54 +/- 2 (internal error). (2) Six of the galaxies have been the site of seven SNe Ia with well observed maxima. Their resulting calibration in absolute magnitudes gives M_B(max)=-19.53 +/- 0.07 and M_V(max)=-19.49 +/- 0.07 with negligible intrinsic scatter. If this calibration is used to determine the distances of all distant SNe Ia with known maxima and with 1100 < v < 30'000 km s^-1, H_0 becomes 56 +/- 3 (internal error). Systematic errors tend to make this an upper limit; in particular the case H_0 >= 70 can be excluded. The conclusion is that the large-scale value of the Hubble constant is H_0=55 +/- 10 (external error).
