Dynamical Equilibration Across a Quenched Phase Transition in a Trapped Quantum Gas

The formation of an equilibrium quantum state from an uncorrelated thermal one through the dynamical crossing of a phase transition is a central question of non-equilibrium many-body physics. During such crossing, the system breaks its symmetry by establishing numerous uncorrelated regions separated by spontaneously-generated defects, whose emergence obeys a universal scaling law with the quench duration. Much less is known about the ensuing re-equilibrating or "coarse-graining" stage, which is governed by the evolution and interactions of such defects under system-specific and external constraints. In this work we perform a detailed numerical characterization of the entire non-equilibrium process, addressing subtle issues in condensate growth dynamics and demonstrating the quench-induced decoupling of number and coherence growth during the re-equilibration process. Our unique visualizations not only reproduce experimental measurements in the relevant regimes, but also provide valuable information in currently experimentally-inaccessible regimes.

Observation of a Spinning Top in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Boundaries strongly affect the behavior of quantized vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates, a phenomenon particularly evident in elongated cigar-shaped traps where vortices tend to orient along a short direction to minimize energy. Remarkably, contributions to the angular momentum of these vortices are tightly confined to the region surrounding the core, in stark contrast to untrapped condensates where all atoms contribute $\hbar$. We develop a theoretical model and use this, in combination with numerical simulations, to show that such localized vortices precess in an analogous manner to that of a classical spinning top. We experimentally verify this spinning-top behavior with our real-time imaging technique that allows for the tracking of position and orientation of vortices as they dynamically evolve. Finally, we perform an in-depth numerical investigation of our real-time expansion and imaging method, with the aim of guiding future experimental implementation, as well as outlining directions for its improvement.

Snake instability of dark solitons in fermionic superfluids

We present numerical calculations of the snake instability in a Fermi superfluid within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory of the BEC to BCS crossover using the random phase approximation complemented by time-dependent simulations. We examine the snaking behaviour across the crossover and quantify the timescale and lengthscale of the instability. While the dynamic shows extensive snaking before eventually producing vortices and sound on the BEC side of the crossover, the snaking dynamics is preempted by decay into sound due to pair breaking in the deep BCS regime. At the unitarity limit, hydrodynamic arguments allow us to link the rate of snaking to the experimentally observable ratio of inertial to physical mass of the soliton. In this limit we witness an unresolved discrepancy between our numerical estimates for the critical wavenumber of suppression of the snake instability and recent experimental observations with an ultra-cold Fermi gas.

Rapid ramps across the BEC-BCS crossover: a novel route to measuring the superfluid gap

We investigate the response of superfluid Fermi gases to rapid changes of the three-dimensional s-wave scattering length a by solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. In general the magnitude of the order parameter |Δ| performs oscillations, which are sometimes called the "Higgs" mode, with the angular frequency 2 Δ_{gap}/ \hbar, where Δ_{gap} is the gap in the spectrum of fermionic excitations. Firstly, we excite the oscillations with a linear ramp of 1/a and study the evolution of |Δ|. Secondly, we continously drive the system with a sinusoidal modulation of 1/a. In the first case, the oscillations in |Δ| damp according to a power law. In the second case, the continued driving causes revivals in the oscillations. In both cases, the excitation of the oscillations causes a reduction in the time-averaged value of |Δ|. We propose two experimental protocols, based around the two approaches, to measure the frequency and damping of the oscillations, and hence Δ_{gap}.

The decay and collisions of dark solitons in superfluid Fermi gases

We study soliton collisions and the decay of solitons into sound in superfluid Fermi gases across the Bose-Einstein condensate to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BEC-BCS) crossover by performing numerical simulations of the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. This decay process occurs when the solitons are accelerated to the bulk pair-breaking speed by an external potential. A similar decay process may occur when solitons are accelerated by an inelastic collision with another soliton. We find that soliton collisions become increasingly inelastic as we move from the BEC to BCS regimes, and the excess energy is converted into sound. We interpret this effect as being due to evolution of Andreev bound states localized within the soliton.

Observation of subdiffusion of a disordered interacting system

We study the transport dynamics of matter-waves in the presence of disorder and nonlinearity. An atomic Bose-Einstein condensate that is localized in a quasiperiodic lattice in the absence of atom-atom interaction shows instead a slow expansion with a subdiffusive behavior when a controlled repulsive interaction is added. The measured features of the subdiffusion are compared to numerical simulations and a heuristic model. The observations confirm the nature of subdiffusion as interaction-assisted hopping between localized states and highlight a role of the spatial correlation of the disorder.

The dynamics of dark solitons in a trapped superfluid Fermi gas

We study soliton oscillations in a trapped superfluid Fermi gas across the Bose-Einstein condensate to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BEC-BCS) crossover. We derive an exact equation relating the phase jump across the soliton to its energy, and hence obtain an expression for the soliton period. Our analytic approach is supported by simulations of the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, which show that the period dramatically increases as the soliton becomes shallower on the BCS side of the resonance. Finally, we propose an experimental protocol to test our predictions.

Critical velocity of superfluid flow through single barrier and periodic potentials

We investigate the problem of an ultracold atomic gas in the superfluid phase flowing in the presence of a potential barrier or a periodic potential. We use a hydrodynamic scheme in the local density approximation (LDA) to obtain an analytic expression for the critical current as a function of the barrier height or the lattice intensity, which applies to both Bose and Fermi superfluids. In this scheme, the stationary flow becomes energetically unstable when the local superfluid velocity is equal to the local sound velocity at the point where the external potential is maximum. We compare this prediction with the results of the numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We discuss the role of long wavelength excitations in determining the critical velocity. Our results allow one to identify the different regimes of superfluid flow, namely, the LDA hydrodynamic regime, the regime of quantum effects beyond LDA for weak barriers and the regime of tunneling between weakly coupled superfluids for strong barriers. We finally discuss the relevance of these results in the context of current experiments with ultracold gases.

Detecting phonons and persistent currents in toroidal Bose-Einstein condensates by means of pattern formation

We theoretically investigate the dynamic properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a toroidal trap. A periodic modulation of the transverse confinement is shown to produce a density pattern due to parametric amplification of phonon pairs. By imaging the density distribution after free expansion one obtains i) a precise determination of the Bogoliubov spectrum and ii) a sensitive detection of quantized circulation in the torus. The parametric amplification is also sensitive to thermal and quantum fluctuations.

Stability and excitations of solitons in 2D Bose-Einstein condensates

The small oscillations of solitons in 2D Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated by solving the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation which is valid when the velocity of the soliton approaches the speed of sound. We show that the soliton is stable and that the lowest excited states obey the same dispersion law as the one of the stable branch of excitations of a 1D gray soliton in a 2D condensate. The role of these states in thermodynamics is discussed.

Stability diagram and growth rate of parametric resonances in Bose-Einstein condensates in one-dimensional optical lattices

A Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice exhibits parametric resonances when the intensity of the lattice is periodically modulated in time. These resonances correspond to an exponential growth of the population of counter-propagating Bogoliubov excitations. A suitable linearization of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation is used to calculate the stability diagram and the growth rates of the unstable modes. The results agree with the ones extracted from time-dependent GP simulations, supporting our previous claim (M. Kraemer et al., Phys. Rev. A (2005) in press) concerning the key role of parametric resonances in the response observed by Stoeferle et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 130403 (2004)) in the superfluid regime. The role of the seed excitations required to trigger the parametric amplification is discussed. The possible amplification of the quantum fluctuations present in the quasiparticle vacuum, beyond GP theory, is also addressed, finding interesting analogies with similar processes in nonlinear quantum optics and with the dynamic Casimir effect. Our results can be used in exploiting parametric instabilities for the purpose of spectroscopy, selective amplification of a particular excitation mode and for establishing a new type of thermometry.

Parametric excitation of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a 1D optical lattice

We study the response of a Bose-Einstein condensate to a periodic modulation of the depth of an optical lattice. Using Gross-Pitaevskii theory, we show that a modulation at frequency Omega drives the parametric excitation of Bogoliubov modes with frequency Omega/2. The ensuing nonlinear dynamics leads to a rapid broadening of the momentum distribution and a consequent large increase of the condensate size after free expansion. We show that this process does not require the presence of a large condensate depletion. Our results reproduce the main features of the spectrum measured in the superfluid phase by Stoeferle et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 130403 (2004).

Density pattern in supercritical flow of liquid He-4

A density functional theory is used to investigate the instability arising in superfluid $^4$He as it flows at velocity u just above the Landau critical velocity of rotons v_c. Confirming an early theoretical prediction by one of us [JETP Lett. 39, 511 (1984)], we find that a stationary periodic modulation of the density occurs, with amplitude proportional to (u-v_c)^{1/2} and wave vector equal to the roton wave vector. This density pattern is studied for supercritical flow both in bulk helium and in a channel of nanometer cross-section.

Role of transverse excitations in the instability of Bose-Einstein condensates moving in optical lattices

The occurrence of energetic and dynamical instabilities in a Bose-Einstein condensate moving in a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice is analyzed by means of the Gross-Pitaevskii theory. Results of full 3D calculations are compared with those of an effective 1D model, the nonpolynomial Schrodinger equation, pointing out the role played by transverse degrees of freedom. The instability thresholds are shown to be scarcely affected by transverse excitations, so that they can be accurately predicted by effective 1D models. Conversely, transverse excitations turn out to be important in characterizing the stability diagram and the occurrence of a complex radial dynamics above the threshold for dynamical instability. This analysis provides a realistic framework to discuss the dissipative dynamics observed in recent experiments.

High sensitivity phonon spectroscopy of Bose-Einstein condensates using matter-wave interference

We study low momentum excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate using a novel matter-wave interference technique. In time-of-flight expansion images we observe strong matter-wave fringe patterns. The fringe contrast is a sensitive spectroscopic probe of in-trap phonons and is explained by use of a Bogoliubov excitation projection method applied to the rescaled order parameter of the expanding condensate. Gross-Pitaevskii simulations agree with the experimental data and confirm the validity of the theoretical interpretation. We show that the high sensitivity of this detection scheme gives access to the quantized quasiparticle regime.

Expansion of Solid Helium into Vacuum: the Geyser Effect

The particle flux through a two micron diameter orifice into vacuum from a source chamber filled with solid He exhibits a striking periodic behavior similar to that of a geyser. This phenomenon is attributed to a periodic collapse of the solid inside the source induced by the accumulation of excess vacancies injected at the orifice. The flux-time curves agree well with a kinetic model and provide direct information on the diffusivity of vacancies in solid He.

Bragg spectroscopy of the multi-branch Bogoliubov spectrum of elongated Bose-Einstein condensates

We measure the response of an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate to a two-photon Bragg pulse. If the duration of the pulse is long, the total momentum transferred to the condensate exhibits a nontrivial behavior which reflects the structure of the underlying Bogoliubov spectrum. It is thus possible to perform a spectroscopic analysis in which axial phonons with different number of radial nodes are resolved. The local density approximation is shown to fail in this regime, while the observed data agrees well with the results of simulations based on the numerical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Helium nanodroplets and trapped Bose-Einstein condensates in dilute atomic gases offer complementary views of fundamental aspects of quantum many-body systems. We discuss analogies and differences, stressing their common theoretical background and peculiar features. We briefly review some relevant concepts, such as the meaning of superfluidity in finite systems, the behavior of elementary excitations and collective modes, as well as rotational properties and quantized vorticity.
