Flavour in heavy neutrino searches at the LHC

Heavy neutrinos at the TeV scale have been searched for at the LHC in the context of left-right models, under the assumption that they couple to the electron, the muon, or both. We show that current searches are also sensitive to heavy neutrinos coupling predominantly to the tau lepton, and present limits can significantly constrain the parameter space of general flavour mixing.

Reconstructing SUSY and R-Neutrino Masses in SO(10)

We report on the extrapolation of scalar mass parameters in the lepton sector to reconstruct SO(10) scenarios close to the unification scale. The method is demonstrated for an example in which SO(10) is broken directly to the Standard Model, based on the expected precision from coherent LHC and ILC collider analyses. In addition to the fundamental scalar mass parameters at the unification scale, the mass of the heaviest right-handed neutrino can be estimated in the seesaw scenario.

Determining Heavy Mass Parameters in Supersymmetric SO(10) Models

Extrapolations of soft scalar mass parameters in supersymmetric theories can be used to explore elements of the physics scenario near the grand unification scale. We investigate the potential of this method in the lepton sector of SO(10) which incorporates right-handed neutrino superfields. The method is exemplified in two models by exploring limits on the precision that can be expected from coherent LHC and e+e- collider analyses in the reconstruction of the fundamental scalar mass parameters at the unification scale and of the D-terms related to the breaking of grand unification symmetries. In addition, the mass of the third-generation right-handed neutrino can be estimated in seesaw scenarios. Even though the models are simplified and not intended to account for all aspects of a final comprehensive SO(10) theory, they provide nevertheless a valid base for identifying essential elements that can be inferred on the fundamental high-scale theory from high-energy experiments.

Flavour physics of leptons and dipole moments

This chapter of the report of the ``Flavour in the era of the LHC'' Workshop discusses the theoretical, phenomenological and experimental issues related to flavour phenomena in the charged lepton sector and in flavour-conserving CP-violating processes. We review the current experimental limits and the main theoretical models for the flavour structure of fundamental particles. We analyze the phenomenological consequences of the available data, setting constraints on explicit models beyond the Standard Model, presenting benchmarks for the discovery potential of forthcoming measurements both at the LHC and at low energy, and exploring options for possible future experiments.

Pinning down the mechanism of neutrinoless double beta decay with measurements in different nuclei

A measurement of neutrinoless double beta decay in one isotope does not allow to determine the underlying physics mechanism. We discuss the discrimination of mechanisms for neutrinoless double beta decay by comparing ratios of half life measurements for different isotopes. Six prominent examples for specific new physics contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay are analyzed. We find that the change in corresponding ratios of half lives varies from 60% for supersymmetric models up to a factor of 5-20 for extra-dimensional and left-right-symmetric mechanisms.

Constraints on SUSY Seesaw from Leptogenesis and LFV

We study constraints on the fundamental parameters of supersymmetric type I seesaw models imposed by neutrino data, charged lepton flavor violation, thermal leptogenesis and perturbativity of the neutrino Yukawa couplings.

Constraints on SUSY Seesaw Parameters from Leptogenesis and Lepton Flavor Violation

We study the constraints on a minimal supersymmetric seesaw model imposed by neutrino data, charged lepton flavor violation, thermal leptogenesis and perturbativity. We show that it is possible to constrain the three heavy Majorana neutrino masses as well as the complex Yukawa coupling matrix. Our results provide a first step towards a seesaw benchmark model for further phenomenological studies and model building.

Enhanced mu-e conversion in nuclei in the inverse seesaw model

We investigate nuclear mu-e conversion in the framework of an effective Lagrangian arising from the inverse seesaw model of neutrino masses. We consider lepton flavour violation interactions that arise from short range (non-photonic) as well as long range (photonic) contributions. Upper bounds for the LFV parameters characterizing mu-e conversion are derived in the inverse seesaw model Lagrangian using the available limits on the mu-e conversion branching ratio, as well as the expected sensitivities of upcoming experiments. We comment on the relative importance of these two types of contributions and their relationship with the measured solar neutrino mixing angle theta_12 and the dependence on theta_13. Finally we show how the LFV mu-e conversion and the mu -> e gamma rates are strongly correlated in this model.

Supersymmetry Parameter Analysis: SPA Convention and Project

High-precision analyses of supersymmetry parameters aim at reconstructing the fundamental supersymmetric theory and its breaking mechanism. A well defined theoretical framework is needed when higher-order corrections are included. We propose such a scheme, Supersymmetry Parameter Analysis SPA, based on a consistent set of conventions and input parameters. A repository for computer programs is provided which connect parameters in different schemes and relate the Lagrangian parameters to physical observables at LHC and high energy e+e- linear collider experiments, i.e., masses, mixings, decay widths and production cross sections for supersymmetric particles. In addition, programs for calculating high-precision low energy observables, the density of cold dark matter (CDM) in the universe as well as the cross sections for CDM search experiments are included. The SPA scheme still requires extended efforts on both the theoretical and experimental side before data can be evaluated in the future at the level of the desired precision. We take here an initial step of testing the SPA scheme by applying the techniques involved to a specific supersymmetry reference point.

Physics Interplay of the LHC and the ILC

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. Topics under study comprise the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics. The status of the work that has been carried out within the LHC / LC Study Group so far is summarised in this report. Possible topics for future studies are outlined.

Slepton Flavor Violation

If the seesaw mechanism is implemented in supersymmetric theories the heavy neutrinos generate corrections to the slepton mass matrices which enhance the rates of charged lepton flavor violating processes. Here we study lepton flavor violating slepton pair production and decay at a future e+e- linear collider in mSUGRA post-LEP benchmark scenarios. We present the results of a background simulation and investigate the correlations of the collider signals with the corresponding radiative lepton decays.

Enhanced lepton flavour violation in the supersymmetric inverse seesaw model

We discuss a supersymmetric inverse seesaw model in which lepton flavour violating decays can be enhanced either by flavour violating slepton contributions or by the non-unitarity of the charged current mixing matrix. As an example we calculate Br(mu -> e gamma) taking into account both heavy lepton exchange as well as supersymmetric diagrams in a minimal supergravity framework. We find that the for the same parameters the rate can be enhanced with respect to seesaw model expectations, with or without supersymmetry.

Lepton flavor violation in the SUSY seesaw model: an update

We present an update of previous work on charged lepton flavor violation (LFV) in the seesaw model. The most recent neutrino data fits and post WMAP mSUGRA benchmark scenarios are used as input. In this framework we compare the sensitivity of rare radiative decays on the right-handed Majorana mass scale M_R with the reach in slepton-pair production at a future linear collider.

The SUSY seesaw model and lepton-flavor violation at a future electron-positron linear collider

We study lepton-flavor violating slepton production and decay at a future e^+e^- linear collider in context with the seesaw mechanism in mSUGRA post-LEP benchmark scenarios. The present knowledge in the neutrino sector as well as improved future measurements are taken into account. We calculate the signal cross-sections σ(e^{+/-}e^- -> l_β^{+/-} l_α^- \tildeχ_b^0 \tildeχ_a^0); l_δ=e, μ, τ; α=|= βand estimate the main background processes. Furthermore, we investigate the correlations of these signals with the corresponding lepton-flavor violating rare decays l_α -> l_β γ. It is shown that these correlations are relatively weakly affected by uncertainties in the neutrino data, but very sensitive to the model parameters. Hence, they are particularly suited for probing the origin of lepton-flavor violation.

Supersymmetric Lepton Flavour Violation at the LHC and LC

In supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, the Yukawa and/or mass terms of the heavy neutrinos can generate lepton flavour violating slepton mass terms. These new supersymmetric sources of lepton flavour violation may both enhance the rates of charged lepton flavour violating processes, l_a -> l_b y, and generate distinct final states, like l_b l_a + jets + missing E_T, at future colliders. First, we discuss the sensitivity of future e^+e^- colliders to the SLFV independently of the lepton flavour violating mechanism. Second, we study lepton flavour violating slepton pair production and decay at a future e^+e^- linear collider in the context of the seesaw mechanism in mSUGRA post-LEP benchmark scenarios. We investigate the correlations of these signals with the corresponding lepton flavour violating rare decays l_a -> l_b y, and show that these correlations are particularly suited for probing the origin of lepton flavour violation.

Probing the Majorana mass scale of right-handed neutrinos in mSUGRA

We discuss the perspectives of testing the right-handed Majorana mass scale M_R of the SUSY see-saw model in the mSUGRA framework. Lepton-flavor violating low energy processes are analyzed in recently proposed post-LEP benchmark scenarios, taking into account present uncertainties and future developments in the neutrino sector. Nonobservation of mu -> e gamma in the next-generation PSI experiment will provide upper bounds on M_R of the order of 10^(12-14) GeV, while on the other hand, a positive signal for tau -> mu gamma at SUPERKEKB or the LHC may determine M_R for a given mSUGRA scenario with an accuracy of a factor of 2.

Neutrino Oscillations, SUSY See-Saw Mechanism and Charged Lepton Flavor Violation

Neutrino oscillations give clear evidence for non-vanishing neutrino masses and lepton-flavor violation (LFV) in the neutrino sector. This provides strong motivation to search for signals of LFV also in the charged lepton sector, and to probe the SUSY see-saw mechanism. We compare the sensitivity of rare radiative decays on the right-handed Majorana mass scale M_R with the reach in slepton-pair production at a future linear collider.
