Crystallinity in Niobium oxides: A pathway to mitigate Two-Level System Defects in Niobium 3D Resonator for quantum applications

Materials imperfections in Nniobium based superconducting quantum circuits, in particular, two-level-system (TLS) defects, are a major source of decoherence, ultimately limiting the performance of quantum computation and sensing. Thus, identifying and understanding the microscopic origin of possible TLS defects in these devices and developing strategies to eliminate them is key to superconducting qubit performance improvement. In this paper, we demonstrate the reduction of two-level system losses in three-dimensional superconducting radio frequency (SRF) niobium resonators by a 10-hour high vacuum (HV) heat treatment at 650°C, even after exposure to air and high pressure rinsing (HPR). By probing the effect of this annealing on niobium samples using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), we witness an alteration of the native oxide composition re-grown after air exposure and HPR and the creation of nano-scale crystalline oxide regions, which correlates with the measured tenfold quality factor enhancement at low fields of the 1.3 GHz niobium resonator.

Recent advances in metallographic polishing for SRF application

This paper is an overview of the metallographic polishing R&D program covering Niobium and Copper substrates treatment for thin film coating as an alternative fabrication pathway for 1.3 GHz elliptical cavities. The presented research is the result of a collaborative effort between IJCLab, CEA/Irfu, HZB, and KEK in order to develop innovative surface processing and cavity fabrication protocols capable of meeting stringent requirements for SRF surfaces, including the reduction of safety risks and ecological footprint, enhancing reliability, improving the surface roughness, and potentially allowing cost reduction. The research findings will be disclosed.

Buffered Electropolishing -- a New Way for Achieving Extremely Smooth Surface Finish on Nb SRF Cavities To be Used in Particle Accelerators

A new surface treatment technique for niobium (Nb) Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavities called Buffered Electropolishing (BEP) has been developed at JLab. It was found that BEP could produce the smoothest surface finish on Nb samples ever reported in the literature. Experimental results revealed that the Nb removal rate of BEP could reach as high as 4.09 um/min. This is significantly faster1 than that of the conventional electropolishing technique employing an acid mixture of HF and H2SO4. An investigation is underway to determine the optimum values for all relevant BEP parameters so that the high quality of surface finish achieved on samples can be realized within the geometry of an elliptical RF cavity. Toward this end, single cell Nb cavities are being electropolished with BEP electrolyte at both CEA-Saclay and JLAB. These cavities will be RF tested and the results will be reported through this presentation.
