Nonadiabatic scattering of a quantum particle in an inhomogenous magnetic field

We investigate the quantum effects, in particular the Landau-level quantization, in the scattering of a particle the nonadiabatic classical dynamics of which is governed by an adiabatic invariant. As a relevant example, we study the scattering of a drifting particle on a magnetic barrier in the quantum limit where the cyclotron energy is much larger than a broadening of the Landau levels induced by the nonadiabatic transitions. We find that, despite the level quantization, the exponential suppression $\exp(-2πd/δ)$ (barrier width $d$, orbital shift per cyclotron revolution $δ$) of the root-mean-square transverse displacement experienced by the particle after the scattering is the same in the quantum and the classical regime.

Multifractality of wavefunctions at the quantum Hall transition revisited

We investigate numerically the statistics of wavefunction amplitudes $ψ({\bf r})$ at the integer quantum Hall transition. It is demonstrated that in the limit of a large system size the distribution function of $|ψ|^2$ is log-normal, so that the multifractal spectrum $f(α)$ is exactly parabolic. Our findings lend strong support to a recent conjecture for a critical theory of the quantum Hall transition.

Quasiclassical magnetotransport in a random array of antidots

We study theoretically the magnetoresistance $ρ_{xx}(B)$ of a two-dimensional electron gas scattered by a random ensemble of impenetrable discs in the presence of a long-range correlated random potential. We believe that this model describes a high-mobility semiconductor heterostructure with a random array of antidots. We show that the interplay of scattering by the two types of disorder generates new behavior of $ρ_{xx}(B)$ which is absent for only one kind of disorder. We demonstrate that even a weak long-range disorder becomes important with increasing $B$. In particular, although $ρ_{xx}(B)$ vanishes in the limit of large $B$ when only one type of disorder is present, we show that it keeps growing with increasing $B$ in the antidot array in the presence of smooth disorder. The reversal of the behavior of $ρ_{xx}(B)$ is due to a mutual destruction of the quasiclassical localization induced by a strong magnetic field: specifically, the adiabatic localization in the long-range Gaussian disorder is washed out by the scattering on hard discs, whereas the adiabatic drift and related percolation of cyclotron orbits destroys the localization in the dilute system of hard discs. For intermediate magnetic fields in a dilute antidot array, we show the existence of a strong negative magnetoresistance, which leads to a nonmonotonic dependence of $ρ_{xx}(B)$.

Quasiclassical negative magnetoresistance of a 2D electron gas: interplay of strong scatterers and smooth disorder

We study the quasiclassical magnetotransport of non-interacting fermions in two dimensions moving in a random array of strong scatterers (antidots, impurities or defects) on the background of a smooth random potential. We demonstrate that the combination of the two types of disorder induces a novel mechanism leading to a strong negative magnetoresistance, followed by the saturation of the magnetoresistivity $ρ_{xx}(B)$ at a value determined solely by the smooth disorder. Experimental relevance to the transport in semiconductor heterostructures is discussed.

Multifractality and critical fluctuations at the Anderson transition

Critical fluctuations of wave functions and energy levels at the Anderson transition are studied for the family of the critical power-law random banded matrix ensembles. It is shown that the distribution functions of the inverse participation ratios (IPR) $P_q$ are scale-invariant at the critical point, with a power-law asymptotic tail. The IPR distribution, the multifractal spectrum and the level statistics are calculated analytically in the limits of weak and strong couplings, as well as numerically in the full range of couplings.

Fluctuations of the inverse participation ratio at the Anderson transition

Statistics of the inverse participation ratio (IPR) at the critical point of the localization transition is studied numerically for the power-law random banded matrix model. It is shown that the IPR distribution function is scale-invariant, with a power-law asymptotic ``tail''. This scale invariance implies that the fractal dimensions $D_q$ are non-fluctuating quantities, contrary to a recent claim in the literature. A recently proposed relation between $D_2$ and the spectral compressibility $χ$ is violated in the regime of strong multifractality, with $χ\to 1$ in the limit $D_2\to 0$.

Zero-frequency anomaly in quasiclassical ac transport: Memory effects in a two-dimensional metal with a long-range random potential or random magnetic field

We study the low-frequency behavior of the {\it ac} conductivity $σ(ω)$ of a two-dimensional fermion gas subject to a smooth random potential (RP) or random magnetic field (RMF). We find a non-analytic $\propto|ω|$ correction to ${\rm Re} σ$, which corresponds to a $1/t^2$ long-time tail in the velocity correlation function. This contribution is induced by return processes neglected in Boltzmann transport theory. The prefactor of this $|ω|$-term is positive and proportional to $(d/l)^2$ for RP, while it is of opposite sign and proportional to $d/l$ in the weak RMF case, where $l$ is the mean free path and $d$ the disorder correlation length. This non-analytic correction also exists in the strong RMF regime, when the transport is of a percolating nature. The analytical results are supported and complemented by numerical simulations.

Theory of many-fermion systems II: The case of Coulomb interactions

In a recent paper (cond-mat/9703164) a general field-theoretical description of many-fermion systems with short-ranged interactions has been developed. Here we extend this theory to the case of disordered electrons interacting via a Coulomb potential. A detailed discussion is given of the Ward identity that controls the soft modes in the system, and the generalized nonlinear sigma model for the Coulombic case is derived and discussed.

Strong magnetoresistance induced by long-range disorder

We calculate the semiclassical magnetoresistivity $ρ_{xx}(B)$ of non-interacting fermions in two dimensions moving in a weak and smoothly varying random potential or random magnetic field. We demonstrate that in a broad range of magnetic fields the non-Markovian character of the transport leads to a strong positive magnetoresistance. The effect is especially pronounced in the case of a random magnetic field where $ρ_{xx}(B)$ becomes parametrically much larger than its B=0 value.

Composite fermions in the half-filled lowest Landau level: a macroscopic justification

An effective Hamiltonian for spinless electrons in the lowest Landau level (LLL) close to half filling is derived. As opposed to the treatment in standard Chern-Simons theories (CS) we first project to the LLL and only then apply a CS-transformation on the Hamiltonian. The transformed field operators act in the lowest Landau level only {\it and} have fermionic commutation relations for small wavenumbers ignoring gauge field fluctuations. When acting on the Hamiltonian at half filling the {\it gauge transformation removes the monopole term in the interaction and does not eliminate the magnetic field.

Semiclassical theory of transport in a random magnetic field

We study the semiclassical kinetics of 2D fermions in a smoothly varying magnetic field $B({\bf r})$. The nature of the transport depends crucially on both the strength $B_0$ of the random component of $B({\bf r})$ and its mean value $\bar{B}$. For $\bar{B}=0$, the governing parameter is $α=d/R_0$, where $d$ is the correlation length of disorder and $R_0$ is the Larmor radius in the field $B_0$. While for $α\ll 1$ the Drude theory applies, at $α\gg 1$ most particles drift adiabatically along closed contours and are localized in the adiabatic approximation. The conductivity is then determined by a special class of trajectories, the "snake states", which percolate by scattering at the saddle points of $B({\bf r})$ where the adiabaticity of their motion breaks down. The external field also suppresses the diffusion by creating a percolation network of drifting cyclotron orbits. This kind of percolation is due only to a weak violation of the adiabaticity of the cyclotron rotation, yielding an exponential drop of the conductivity at large $\bar{B}$. In the regime $α\gg 1$ the crossover between the snake-state percolation and the percolation of the drift orbits with increasing $\bar{B}$ has the character of a phase transition (localization of snake states) smeared exponentially weakly by non-adiabatic effects. The ac conductivity also reflects the dynamical properties of particles moving on the fractal percolation network. In particular, it has a sharp kink at zero frequency and falls off exponentially at higher frequencies. We also discuss the nature of the quantum magnetooscillations. Detailed numerical studies confirm the analytical findings. The shape of the magnetoresistivity at $α\sim 1$ is in good agreement with experimental data in the FQHE regime near $ν=1/2$.

Non-adiabatic scattering of a classical particle in an inhomogeneous magnetic field

We study the violation of the adiabaticity of the electron dynamics in a slowly varying magnetic field. We formulate and solve exactly a non-adiabatic scattering problem. In particular, we consider scattering on a magnetic field inhomogeneity which models scatterers in the composite-fermion theory of the half-filled Landau level. The calculated non-adiabatic shift of the guiding center is exponentially small and exhibits an oscillatory behavior related to the "self-commensurability" of the drifting cyclotron orbit. The analytical results are complemented with a numerical simulation.

Density expansion for transport coefficients: Long-wavelength versus Fermi surface nonanalyticities

The expansion of the conductivity in 2-d quantum Lorentz models in terms of the scatterer density n is considered. We show that nonanalyticities in the density expansion due to scattering processes with small and large momentum transfers, respectively, have different functional forms. Some of the latter are not logarithmic, but rather of power-law nature, in sharp contrast to the 3-d case. In a 2-d model with point-like scatterers we find that the leading nonanalytic correction to the Boltzmann conductivity, apart from the frequency dependent weak-localization term, is of order n^{3/2}.
