Comparative study of the double $K$-shell-vacancy production in single- and double-electron capture decay

We carried out the comparative study of the signal from the decay of double $K$-shell vacancy production that follows after single $K$-shell electron capture of $^{81}$Kr and double $K$-shell electron capture of $^{78}$Kr. The radiative decay of a the double $1s$ vacancy state was identified by detecting the triple coincidence of two $K$ X-rays and several Auger electrons in the $ECEC$-decay, or by detecting two $K$ X-rays and (Auger electrons + ejected $K$-shell electron) in the $EC$ decay. The number of $K$-shell vacancies per the $K$-electron capture, produced as a result of the shake-off process, has been measured for the decay of $^{81}$Kr. The probability for this decay was found to be $P_{KK}=(5.7\pm0.8)\times10^{-5}$ with a systematic error of $(ΔP_{KK})_{syst}=\pm0.4 \times10^{-5}$. For the $^{78}{\rm{Kr}}(2\nu2K)$ decay, the comparative study of single- and double-capture decays allowed us to obtain the signal-to-background ratio to be 15/1. The half-life $T_{1/2}^{2\nu2K}(g.s. \rightarrow g.s.) = [1.9^{+1.3}_{-0.7}(stat)\pm0.3(syst)]\times 10^{22}$ y is determined from the analysis of data that have been accumulated over 782 days of live measurements in the experiment that used samples consisted of 170.6 g of $^{78}$Kr.

Impact of the ionization of the atomic shell on the lifetime of the $^{229m}$Th isomer

Contemporary data are analyzed concerning the half-lives of the $^{229m}$Th isomer in neutral atoms and various ions. It is explicitly shown that the isomer lifetime may strongly depend on the plain environmental physical conditions like pressure and temperature. Calculation is performed on the united platform of interplay of traditional and subthreshold resonance conversion. General agreement with experiment is obtained in the cases of Th$^I$ and Th$^{III}$, a prediction is made concerning Th$^{IV}$. Disagreement with the experiment in the case of Th$^{II}$ may be a consequence of a random very sharp resonance with an electronic level. Account of the influence of the environment on the decay rate helps one to loose the resonance condition, which may lead to agreement with experiment. This will mean the first experimental observation of strong dependence of the nuclear decay rate on the environment.

The theory of the Bohr-Weisskopf effect in the hyperfine structure

For twenty years research into the anomalies in the HF spectra was going in a wrong direction by fighting the related Bohr-Weisskopf effect. As a way out, the model-independent way is proposed of estimating the nuclear radii from the hyper-fine splitting. The way is based on analogy of HFS to internal conversion coefficients, and the Bohr-Weisskopf effect - to the anomalies in the internal conversion coefficients. This makes transparent It is shown that the parameters which can be extracted from the data are the even nuclear moments of the magnetization distribution. The radii $R_2$ and (for the first time) $R_4$ are thus obtained by analysis of the experimental HFS for the H- and Li-like ions of $^{209}$Bi. The critical prediction of the HFS for the $2p_{1/2}$ state is discussed. The moments may be determined in this way only if the higher QED effects are properly taken into account. Therefore, this set of the parameters form a basis of a strict QED test. Experimental prospects are discussed, aimed at retrieving data on the HFS values for a set of a few-electron configurations of the atom.

Right-left asymmetry of radiation from fission induced by polarised neutrons

The effect of the right-left asymmetry is considered in the angular distribution of gamma quanta from fission of U-235 by polarised thermal neutrons, which depends on the polarisation of the neutrons with respect to the gamma-fission plane. Electric dipole radiation from fission fragments arising due to the Strutinsky-Denisov induced polarisation mechanism may give rise to such an effect. Earlier, this mechanism was shown to fit the non-statistical part observed in the gamma spectrum from spontaneous fission of Cf-252. The calculated value of the magnitude of the asymmetry parameter is on the level of 10$^{-4}$. That is in agreement with the current experimental data. A crucial experiment to give a more definite picture of the concrete mechanism would be determination of the energy of the quanta responsible for the asymmetry. Detection of the quanta with the energy of ~5 MeV approaching the giant dipole resonance is needed in order to identify prompt gamma rays emitted at the stage of fissioning.

Non-Statistical gamma Rays from Fragments

Polarization mechanism by Strutinsky-Denisov gives rise to the electric dipole radiation from fragments. Its probability calculated within the LDM turns out to be ~3.5x10-2 per fission. The radiation occurs during thermolization of the post-rupture deformation energy of the fragments, but before the neutron emission.

Right-Left Asymmetry of Radiation from Fission

The effect of the right-left asymmetry is considered in the predicted earlier electric dipole radiation from fission fragments arising due to the Strutinski-Denisov induced polarisation mechanism. The magnitude of the asymmetry parameter is on the level of 10^-3. That is in agreement with the recent experimental data on the radiative ROT effect in ^{235}U fission induced by cold polarised neutrons.

The Resonance Theory of Proton and Alpha Decay from Hot Sources

The consecutive microscopic solution is presented of the problem of tunneling of a particle through a potential barrier. The method is applied to the alpha and proton decay of compound systems formed in fusion reaction. Appearance of the peaks in the spectrum of emitted particles is predicted. The peaks correspond to quasistationary states inside the potential barrier.

Electron--phonon coupling and anharmonic effects in metal clusters

The periods of the harmonic oscillations of the ion core of charged sodium clusters around the equilibrium shapes are considered. It is found that these periods are of the order of magnitude of the experimentally measured relaxation times of the plasmons, which suggests the importance of the electron-ion coupling and stresses the role played by the electron-phonon interaction in the dissipation of the plasmon energy. The relation of the process to fission is briefly discussed.
