Performance of the LHCb RICH detectors during LHC Run 2

The performance of the ring-imaging Cherenkov detectors at the LHCb experiment is determined during the LHC Run 2 period between 2015 and 2018. The stability of the Cherenkov angle resolution and number of detected photons with time and running conditions is measured. The particle identification performance is evaluated with data and found to satisfy the requirements of the physics programme.

The Physics of the B Factories

This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. The nominal version uses the notation phi_1, phi_2 and phi_3. Please cite this work as Eur. Phys. J. C74 (2014) 3026.

The Physics Potential of SuperB

SuperB is a major new European e+e- collider facility to be built in Italy that will provide a precise study of the structure of New Physics beyond the Standard Model at energy scales above the LHC as well as a comprehensive program of Standard Model physics. In this article, I review the physics opportunities, the status of the accelerator and detector studies, and the future plans.

Design Study for a SuperB Pixel Vertex Detector

We present a conceptual design for a low-mass, all pixel vertex detector using the CMOS quadruple well INMAPS process, capable of working in the very high luminosities exceeding 10^36 /cm^2 /sec that can be expected at the next generation e+e- B factories. We concentrate on the vertexing requirements necessary for time-dependent measurements that are also relevant to searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model. We investigate different configurations and compare with the baseline designs for the SuperB and BaBar experiments.

Factorization fits to charmless strangeless B decays

We present fits to charmless strangeless hadronic B decay data for mean branching ratios and CP-violating asymmetries using the QCD factorization model of Beneke et al. Apart from one CP-violating parameter, the model gives a very good representation of 26 measured data. We find the CKM angle alpha = (93.5 +/- 8.4 -1.3) degrees and to be quite stable to plausible "charming penguin" corrections.

The Design and Performance of the ZEUS Central Tracking Detector z-by-Timing System

The ZEUS Central Tracking Detector utilizes a time difference measurement to provide a fast determination of the z-coordinate of each hit. The z-by-timing measurement is achieved by using a Time-to-Amplitude Converter which has an intrinsic timing resolution of 36 ps, has pipelined readout, and has a multihit capability of 48 ns. In order to maintain the required sub-nanosecond timing accuracy, the technique incorporates an automated self-calibration system. The readout of the z-by-timing data utilizes a fully customized timing control system which runs synchronously with the HERA beam-crossing clock, and a data acquisition system implemented on a network of Transputers. Three dimensional space-points provided by the z-by-timing system are used as input to all three levels of the ZEUS trigger and for offline track reconstruction. The average z-resolution is determined to be 4.4 cm for multi-track events from positron-proton collisions in the ZEUS detector.
