Mean-field analysis of the stability of a K-Rb Fermi-Bose mixture

We compare the experimental stability diagram of a Fermi-Bose mixture of K-40 and Rb-87 atoms with attractive interaction to the predictions of a mean-field theoretical model. We discuss how this comparison can be used to give a better estimate of the interspecies scattering length, which is currently known from collisional measurements with larger uncertainty.

Magnetic control of the interaction in ultracold K-Rb mixtures

We predict the presence of several magnetic Feshbach resonances in selected Zeeman sublevels of the isotopic pairs K(40)-Rb(87) and K(41)-Rb(87) at magnetic fields up to 1000 G. Positions and widths are determined combining a new measurement of the K(40)-Rb(87) inelastic cross section with recent experimental results on both isotopes. The possibility of driving a K-Rb mixtures from the weak to the strong interacting regime tuning the applied field should allow to achieve the optimal conditions for boson-induced Cooper pairing in a multi component K(40)-Rb(87) atomic gas and for the production of ultracold polar molecules.

Dipolar oscillations in a quantum degenerate Fermi-Bose atomic mixture

We study the dynamics of coupled dipolar oscillations in a Fermi-Bose mixture of $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb atoms. This low-energy collective mode is strongly affected by the interspecies interactions. Measurements are performed in the dynamical and quantum degenerate regimes and evidence the crucial role of the statistical properties of the mixture. At the onset of quantum degeneracy, we investigate the role of Pauli blocking and superfluidity for K and Rb atoms, respectively, resulting in a change in the collisional interactions.

Collective excitations of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a 1D optical lattice

We study low-lying collective modes of a horizontally elongated 87Rb condensate produced in a 3D magnetic harmonic trap with the addition of a 1D periodic potential which is provided by a laser standing-wave along the horizontal axis. While the transverse breathing mode results unperturbed, quadrupole and dipole oscillations along the optical lattice are strongly modified. Precise measurements of the collective mode frequencies at different height of the optical barriers provide a stringent test of the theoretical model recently introduced [M.Kraemer et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 180404 (2002)].

Dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate at finite temperature in an atomoptical coherence filter

The macroscopic coherent tunneling through the barriers of a periodic potential is used as an atomoptical filter to separate the condensate and the thermal components of a $^{87}$Rb mixed cloud. We condense in the combined potential of a laser standing-wave superimposed on the axis of a cigar-shape magnetic trap and induce condensate dipole oscillation in the presence of a static thermal component. The oscillation is damped due to interaction with the thermal fraction and we investigate the role played by the periodic potential in the damping process.

Bose-Einstein Condensates in a 1D Optical Lattice

We give an overview on current experiments on Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice. We introduce measurements of ground state, tunnelling and dynamical properties as well as investigations of atom optical applications and thermodynamical properties. Measurements of the coherent atomic current in an array of Josephson junctions and the critical velocity for the breakdown of superfluid motion are discussed in detail.
