Crossing the Rubicon of Reionization with z~5 QSOs

One of the key open questions in Cosmology is the nature of the sources that completed the cosmological hydrogen Reionization at z~5.2. High-z primeval galaxies have been long considered the main drivers for Reionization, with a minor role played by high-z AGN. However, in order to confirm this scenario, it is fundamental to measure the photo-ionization rate produced by active SMBHs close to the epoch of Reionization. Given the pivotal role played by spectroscopically complete observations of high-z QSOs, in this paper we present the first results of the RUBICON (Reionizing the Universe with BrIght COsmological Nuclei) survey. It consists of a color selected sample of bona-fide z~5 QSO candidates from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Survey. Our QSO candidates have been validated both by photometric redshifts based on SED fitting and by spectroscopic redshifts, confirming that they lie at 4.5<z_spec<5.2. A relatively large space density of QSOs (Phi~1.4x10^-8 cMpc^-3) is thus confirmed at z~5 and M1450~-27, consistent with a pure density evolution of the AGN luminosity function from z=4 to z=5, with a mild density evolution rate of 0.25 dex. This indicates that AGN could play a non-negligible role in the cosmic Reionization. The Rubicon of Reionization has been crossed.

The VANDELS survey: the ionizing properties of star-forming galaxies at $3 \leq z \leq 5$ using deep rest-frame ultraviolet spectroscopy

To better understand the ionizing properties of galaxies in the EoR, we investigate deep, rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectra of $\simeq 500$ star-forming galaxies at $3 \leq z \leq 5$ selected from the public ESO-VANDELS spectroscopic survey. The absolute ionizing photon escape fraction ($f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$) is derived by combining absorption line measurements with estimates of the UV attenuation. The ionizing production efficiency ($ξ_{ion}$) is calculated by fitting the far-UV (FUV) stellar continuum of the VANDELS galaxies. We find that the $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$ and $ξ_{ion}$ parameters increase towards low-mass, blue UV-continuum slopes and strong Ly$α$ emitting galaxies, and both are just slightly higher-than-average for the UV-faintest galaxies in the sample. Potential Lyman Continuum Emitters (LCEs) and selected Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) show systematically higher $ξ_{ion}$ ($\log ξ_{ion}$ (Hz\erg) $\approx 25.38, 25.41$) than non-LCEs and non-LAEs ($\log ξ_{ion}$ (Hz\erg) $\approx 25.18, 25.14$) at similar UV magnitudes. This indicates very young underlying stellar populations ($\approx 10~{\rm Myr}$) at relatively low metallicities ($\approx 0.2~{\rm Z_{\odot}}$). The FUV non-ionizing spectra of potential LCEs is characterized by very blue UV slopes ($\leq -2$), enhanced Ly$α$ emission ($\leq -25$A), strong UV nebular lines (e.g., high CIV1550/CIII]1908 $\geq 0.75$ ratios), and weak absorption lines ($\leq 1$A). The latter suggests the existence of low gas-column-density channels in the interstellar medium which enables the escape of ionizing photons. By comparing our VANDELS results against other surveys in the literature, our findings imply that the ionizing budget in the EoR was likely dominated by UV-faint, low-mass and dustless galaxies.

Spectrographs and Spectroscopists for the Sandage Test

The redshift drift is a small, dynamic change in the redshift of objects following the Hubble flow. Its measurement provides a direct, real-time, model-independent mapping of the expansion rate of the Universe. It is fundamentally different from other cosmological probes: instead of mapping our (present-day) past light-cone, it directly compares different past light-cones. Being independent of any assumptions on gravity, geometry or clustering, it directly tests the pillars of the Lambda-CDM paradigm. Recent theoretical studies have uncovered unique synergies with other cosmological probes, including the characterization of the physical properties of dark energy. At the time of the original proposal by Sandage (1962) the expected change in the redshift of objects at cosmological distances appeared to be exceedingly small for reasonable observing times and beyond technological capabilities. In the last decades progress in the spectrographs (e.g. ESPRESSO), in the collecting area of telescopes and in the samples of cosmic beacons, enabled by new datasets and new machine-learning-based selections, have drastically changed the situation, bringing the Redshift Drift Grail within reach. As a consequence, this measurement is a flagship objective of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), specifically of its high-resolution spectrograph, ANDES.

The environmental dependence of the stellar and gas-phase mass-metallicity relation at 2 < z < 4

In the local universe, galaxies in clusters show different properties compared to more isolated systems. Understanding how this difference originates and whether it is already in place at high redshift is still a matter of debate. Thanks to uniquely deep optical spectra from the VANDELS survey, we investigate environmental effects on the stellar mass-metallicity relation (MZR) for a sample of ~1000 star-forming galaxies at 2<z<4. We complement our dataset with MOSFIRE follow-up of 21 galaxies to study the environmental dependence of the gas-phase MZR. Robust stellar and gas metallicities are derived, respectively, from well-calibrated photospheric absorptions features at 1501 and 1719 Åin the stacked spectra, and from optical emission lines ([OII]3726-3729, [OIII]5007, and Hbeta) in individual systems. We characterize the environment through multiple criteria by using the local galaxy density maps previously derived in VANDELS. We find that environmental effects are weak at these redshifts, and more important around the densest overdensity structures, where galaxies have a lower stellar Z (by 0.2 dex) and a lower gas-phase Z (by 0.1 dex) compared to the field, with a significance of 1 and 2 sigma, respectively. Crucially, this offset cannot be explained by a selection effect due to a higher SFR, a fainter UV continuum, or different dust attenuations and stellar ages. Despite the still low S/N of our results, we propose a combination of increased mergers and high-speed encounters, more efficient AGN feedback in dense cores, and cold gas inflows as viable mechanisms diluting the metal content of overdense galaxies or expelling their metals to the IGM. Finally, some tensions remain with semi-analytic models and hydrodynamical simulations, which predict no significant offset as a function of host halo mass, suggesting that an explicit implementation of environmental processes is needed.

The stellar metallicities of massive quiescent galaxies at 1.0 < z < 1.3 from KMOS+VANDELS

We present a rest-frame UV-optical stacked spectrum representative of massive quiescent galaxies at $1.0 10.8$. The stack is constructed using VANDELS survey data, combined with new KMOS observations. We apply two independent full-spectral-fitting approaches, measuring a total metallicity, [Z/H]=$-0.13\pm0.08$ with Bagpipes, and [Z/H]=$0.04\pm0.14$ with Alf, a fall of $\sim0.2-0.3$ dex compared with the local Universe. We also measure an iron abundance, [Fe/H] =$-0.18\pm0.08$, a fall of $\sim0.15$ dex compared with the the local Universe. We measure the alpha enhancement via the magnesium abundance, obtaining [Mg/Fe]=$0.23\pm$0.12, consistent with similar-mass galaxies in the local Universe, indicating no evolution in the average alpha enhancement of log$(M_*/\rm{M_\odot})=11$ quiescent galaxies over the last $\sim8$ Gyr. This suggests the very high alpha enhancements recently reported for several bright $z\sim1-2$ quiescent galaxies are due to their extreme masses, log$(M_*/\rm{M_\odot})\gtrsim11.5$, rather than being typical of the $z\gtrsim1$ population. The metallicity evolution we observe with redshift (falling [Z/H], [Fe/H], constant [Mg/Fe]) is consistent with recent studies. We recover a mean stellar age of $2.5^{+0.6}_{-0.4}$ Gyr, corresponding to a formation redshift, $z_\rm{form}=2.4^{+0.6}_{-0.3}$. Recent studies have obtained varying average formation redshifts for $z\gtrsim1$ massive quiescent galaxies, and, as these studies report consistent metallicities, we identify different star-formation-history models as the most likely cause. Larger spectroscopic samples from upcoming ground-based instruments will provide precise constraints on ages and metallicities at $z\gtrsim1$. Combining these with precise JWST $z>2$ quiescent-galaxy stellar-mass functions will provide an independent test of formation redshifts derived from spectral fitting.

No strong dependence of Lyman continuum leakage on physical properties of star-forming galaxies at $\mathbf{3.1 \lesssim z \lesssim 3.5}$

We present Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation escape fraction $f_{\rm{esc}}$ measurements for 183 spectroscopically confirmed star-forming galaxies in the redshift range $3.11 < z < 3.53$ in the \textit{Chandra} Deep Field South. We use ground-based imaging to measure $f_{\rm{esc}}$, and use ground- and space-based photometry to derive galaxy physical properties using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We additionally derive [O III]+H$β$ equivalent widths (that fall in the observed K band) by including nebular emission in the SED fitting. After removing foreground contaminants, we report the discovery of 11 new candidate LyC leakers, with absolute LyC escape fractions, $f_{\rm{esc}}$ in the range $0.14-0.85$. From non-detections, we place $1σ$ upper limits of $f_{\rm{esc}}<0.12$, where the Lyman-break selected galaxies have $f_{\rm{esc}} < 0.11$ and `blindly' discovered galaxies with no prior photometric selection have $f_{\rm{esc}}<0.13$. We find a slightly higher $1σ$ limit of $f_{\rm{esc}}<0.20$ for extreme emission line galaxies with rest-frame [O III]+H$β$ equivalent widths $>300$A. For candidate LyC leakers, we find a weak negative correlation between $f_{\rm{esc}}$ and galaxy stellar masses, no correlation between $f_{\rm{esc}}$ specific star-formation rates (sSFRs) and a positive correlation between $f_{\rm{esc}}$ and EW$_0$([O III]+H$β$). The weak/no correlations between stellar mass and sSFRs may be explained by misaligned viewing angles and/or non-coincident timescales of starburst activity and periods of high $f_{\rm{esc}}$. Alternatively, escaping radiation may predominantly occur in highly localised star-forming regions, or $f_{\rm{esc}}$ measurements may be impacted by stochasticity of the intervening neutral medium, obscuring any global trends with galaxy properties. These hypotheses have important consequences for models of reionisation.

The space density of ultra-luminous QSOs at the end of reionization epoch by the QUBRICS Survey and the AGN contribution to the hydrogen ionizing background

Motivated by evidences favoring a rapid and late hydrogen reionization process completing at z~5.2-5.5 and mainly driven by rare and luminous sources, we have reassessed the estimate of the space density of ultra-luminous QSOs at z~5 in the framework of the QUBRICS survey. A ~90% complete sample of 14 spectroscopically confirmed QSOs at M1450<-28.3 and 4.5 3. Adopting our z~4 QSO luminosity function and applying a mild density evolution in redshift, a photo-ionization rate of GammaHI=0.46+0.17-0.09x10^-12 s^-1 has been obtained at z=4.75, assuming an escape fraction of ~70% and a steep faint-end slope of the AGN luminosity function. The derived photo-ionization rate is ~50-100% of the ionizing background measured at the end of the reionization epoch, suggesting that AGNs could play an important role in the cosmological reionization process.

The NIRVANDELS Survey: a robust detection of $α$-enhancement in star-forming galaxies at $z\simeq3.4$

We present results from the NIRVANDELS survey investigating the gas-phase metallicity ($\mathrm{Z}_{\mathrm{gas}}$, tracing O/H) and stellar metallicity ($Z_{\star}$, tracing Fe/H) of 33 star-forming galaxies at redshifts $2.95 < z < 3.80$. Based on a combined analysis of deep optical and near-IR spectra, tracing the rest-frame far ultraviolet and rest-frame optical respectively, we present the first simultaneous determination of the stellar and gas-phase mass-metallicity relationships (MZRs) at $z\simeq3.4$. In both cases, we find that metallicity increases with increasing stellar mass ($M_{\star}$), and that the power-law slope at $M_{\star} \lesssim 10^{10} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ of both MZRs scales as $Z \propto M_{\star}^{0.3}$. Comparing the stellar and gas-phase MZRs, we present direct evidence for super-solar O/Fe ratios (i.e., $α$-enhancement) at $z>3$, finding $\mathrm{(O/Fe)}\simeq (2.54 \pm 0.38) \times \mathrm{(O/Fe)}_{\odot}$, with no clear dependence on $M_{\star}$.

The Luminosity Function of bright QSOs at z~4 and implications for the cosmic ionizing background

Based on results by recent surveys, the number of bright quasars at redshifts z>3 is being constantly revised upwards. Current consensus is that at bright magnitudes ($M_{1450}\le -27$) the number densities of such sources could have been underestimated by a factor of 30-40%. In the framework of the QUBRICS survey, we identified 58 bright QSOs at 3.6$\le z \le $4.2, with magnitudes $i_{psf}\le$18, in an area of 12400$deg^{2}$. The uniqueness of our survey is underlined by the fact that it allows us, for the first time, to extend the sampled absolute magnitude range up to $M_{1450}= -29.5$. We derived a bright-end slope of $β=-4.025$ and a space density at $ =-28.75$ of 2.61$\times 10^{-10} Mpc^{-3}$ comoving, after taking into account the estimated incompleteness of our observations. Taking into account the results of fainter surveys, AGN brighter than $M_{1450}=-23$ could produce at least half of the ionizing emissivity at z$\sim$4. Considering a mean escape fraction of 0.7 for the QSO and AGN population, combined with a mean free path of 41.3 proper Mpc at $z=3.9$, we derive a photoionization rate of $Log(Γ[s^{-1}])=-12.17^{+0.13}_{-0.07}$, produced by AGN at M$_{1450}<-18$, i.e. ~100% of the measured ionizing background at z~4.

The less and the more IGM transmitted galaxies from z~2.7 to z~6 from VANDELS and VUDS

Aim. Our aim is to analyse the variance of the Inter-Galactic Medium transmission (IGM) by studying this parameter in the rest-frame UV spectra of a large sample of high redshift galaxies. Method. We make use of the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey and the VANDELS public survey to have an insight into the far UV spectrum of $2.7<z<6$ galaxies. Using the SPARTAN fitting software, we estimate the IGM towards individual galaxies and then divide them in two sub-samples characterized by a transmission above or below the theoretical prescription. We create average spectra of combined VUDS and VANDELS data for each set of galaxies in seven redshift bins. Results. The resulting spectra clearly exhibit the variance of the IGM transmission that can be seen directly from high redshift galaxy observations. Computing the optical depth based on the IGM transmission, we find an excellent agreement with QSOs results. In addition, our measurements seem to suggest that there is a large dispersion of redshift where complete Gunn-Peterson Trough happens, depending on the line of sight.

The VANDELS ESO public spectroscopic survey: final Data Release of 2087 spectra and spectroscopic measurements

VANDELS is an ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey designed to build a sample of high signal to noise, medium resolution spectra of galaxies at redshift between 1 and 6.5. Here we present the final Public Data Release of the VANDELS Survey, comprising 2087 redshift measurements. We give a detailed description of sample selection, observations and data reduction procedures. The final catalogue reaches a target selection completeness of 40% at iAB = 25. The high Signal to Noise ratio of the spectra (above 7 in 80% of the spectra) and the dispersion of 2.5Å allowed us to measure redshifts with high precision, the redshift measurement success rate reaching almost 100%. Together with the redshift catalogue and the reduced spectra, we also provide optical mid-IR photometry and physical parameters derived through SED fitting. The observed galaxy sample comprises both passive and star forming galaxies covering a stellar mass range 8.3< Log(M*/Msolar)<11.7. All catalogues and spectra are accessible through the survey database (http://vandels.inaf.it) where all information can be queried interactively, and via the ESO Archive (https://www.eso.org/qi/).

The VANDELS survey: the relation between UV continuum slope and stellar metallicity in star-forming galaxies at z~3

The estimate of stellar metallicities (Z*) of high-z galaxies are of paramount importance in order to understand the complexity of dust effects and the reciprocal interrelations among stellar mass, dust attenuation, stellar age, and metallicity. Benefiting from uniquely deep FUV spectra of >500 star-forming galaxies at redshifts 2<z<5 extracted from the VANDELS survey and stacked in bins of stellar mass (M*) and UV continuum slope (beta), we estimate their stellar metallicities Z* from stellar photospheric absorption features at 1501 and 1719 Angstrom, which are calibrated with Starburst99 models and are largely unaffected by stellar age, dust, IMF, nebular continuum or interstellar absorption. Comparing them to photometric based spectral slopes in the range 1250-1750 Angstrom, we find that the stellar metallicity increases by ~0.5 dex from beta ~ -2 to beta ~ -1 (1 < A(1600) < 3.2), and a dependence with beta holds at fixed UV absolute luminosity M(UV) and stellar mass up to 10^(9.65) Msun. As a result, the metallicity is a fundamental ingredient for properly rescaling dust corrections based on M(UV) and M*. Using the same absorption features, we analyze the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) and find it is consistent with the previous VANDELS estimation based on a global fit of the FUV spectra. Similarly, we do not find a significant evolution between z=2 and z=3.5. Finally, the slopes of our MZR and Z*-beta relation are in agreement with the predictions of well-studied semi-analytic models of galaxy formation (SAM), while some tensions with observations remain as to the absolute metallicity normalization. The relation between UV slope and stellar metallicity is fundamental for the exploitation of large volume surveys with next-generation telescopes and for the physical characterization of galaxies in the first billion years of our Universe.

The spectroscopic follow-up of the QUBRICS bright quasar survey

We present the results of the spectroscopic follow up of the QUBRICS survey. The selection method is based on a machine learning approach applied to photometric catalogs, covering an area of $\sim$ 12,400 deg$^2$ in the Southern Hemisphere. The spectroscopic observations started in 2018 and identified 55 new, high-redshift (z>=2.5), bright (i<=18) QSOs, with the catalog published in late 2019. Here we report the current status of the survey, bringing the total number of bright QSOs at z<=2.5 identified by QUBRICS to 224. The success rate of the QUBRICS selection method, in its most recent training, is estimated to be 68%. The predominant contaminant turns out to be lower-z QSOs at z<2.5. This survey provides a unique sample of bright QSOs at high-z available for a number of cosmological investigations. In particular, carrying out the redshift drift measurements (Sandage Test) in the Southern Hemisphere, using the HIRES spectrograph at the 39m ELT, appears to be possible with less than 2500 hours of observations spread over 30 targets in 25 years.

The VANDELS survey: Discovery of massive overdensities of galaxies at z>2

We want to investigate whether we can use Lyalpha emission to obtain information on the environment properties and whether Lyalpha emitters show different characteristics as a function of their environment. We estimated local densities in the VANDELS Chandra Deep Field-South (CDFS) and UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) fields, by using a three-dimensional algorithm which works in the RA-dec-redshift space. We selected a sample of 131 Lyalpha-emitting galaxies (EW(Lyalpha)>0 A), unbiased with respect to environmental density, to study their location with respect to the over- or under-dense environment. We identify 13 (proto)cluster candidates in the CDFS and nine in the UDS at 2<z<4, based on photometric and spectroscopic redshifts from VANDELS and from all the available literature. No significant difference is observed in the rest-frame U-V color between field and galaxies located within the identified overdensities. We find that VANDELS Lyalpha emitters (LAEVs) lie preferentially outside of overdense regions as the majority of the galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts from VANDELS. The LAEVs in overdense regions tend to have low Lyalpha equivalent widths and low specific SFRs, and they also tend to be more massive than the LAEVs in the field. Their stacked Lyalpha profile shows a dominant red peak and a hint of a blue peak. Our results show that LAEVs are likely to be influenced by the environment and favour a scenario with outflows of low expansion velocities and high HI column densities for galaxies in overdense regions. An outflow with low expansion velocity could be related to the way galaxies are forming stars in overdense regions; the high HI column density can be a consequence of the gravitational potential of the overdensity. Therefore, Lyalpha-emitting galaxies can provide useful insights on the environment in which they reside.

On the AGN nature of two UV bright sources at z_spec~5.5 in the CANDELS fields: an update of the AGN space density at M1450~-22.5

It is a widespread opinion that hydrogen reionization is mainly driven by primeval star-forming galaxies, with a minor role of high-z active galactic nuclei. Recent observations, however, challenge this notion, indicating a number of issues related to a galaxy-driven reionization scenario. We provide here an updated assessment of the space density of relatively faint (M1450~-22.5) AGNs at zspec~5.5 in order to improve the estimate of the photo-ionization rate contribution from accreting super massive black holes. Exploiting deep UV rest-frame ground-based spectra collected at the Very Large Telescope on the CANDELS/GOODS-South field and deep Chandra X-ray images in the CANDELS/GOODS-North and EGS areas, we find two relatively bright (M1450~-22.5) AGNs at zspec~5.5. We derive an AGN space density of Phi=1.29x10^-6 cMpc^-3 at z~5.5 and M1450~-22.5 by simply dividing their observed number by the cosmological volume in the range 5.0 5, in contrast with previous claims mostly based on standard color selection, possibly affected by significant incompleteness. Our estimate for the AGN photo-ionization rate at z~5.5 is in agreement with the observed values at similar redshifts, which are needed to keep the intergalactic medium highly ionized. Upcoming JWST and giant ground based telescopes observations will improve the study of high-z AGNs and their contribution to the reionization of the Universe.

The VANDELS survey: A strong correlation between Ly$α$ equivalent width and stellar metallicity at $\mathbf{3\leq z \leq 5}$

We present the results of a new study investigating the relationship between observed Ly$α$ equivalent width ($W_λ$(Ly$α$)) and the metallicity of the ionizing stellar population ($Z_{\star}$) for a sample of $768$ star-forming galaxies at $3 \leq z \leq 5$ drawn from the VANDELS survey. Dividing our sample into quartiles of rest-frame $W_λ$(Ly$α$) across the range $-58 \unicode{xC5} \lesssim$ $W_λ$(Ly$α$) $\lesssim 110 \unicode{xC5}$ we determine $Z_{\star}$ from full spectral fitting of composite far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectra and find a clear anti-correlation between $W_λ$(Ly$α$) and $Z_{\star}$. Our results indicate that $Z_{\star}$ decreases by a factor $\gtrsim 3$ between the lowest $W_λ$(Ly$α$) quartile ($\langle$$W_λ$(Ly$α$)$\rangle=-18\unicode{xC5}$) and the highest $W_λ$(Ly$α$) quartile ($\langle$$W_λ$(Ly$α$)$\rangle=24\unicode{xC5}$). Similarly, galaxies typically defined as Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs; $W_λ$(Ly$α$) $>20\unicode{xC5}$) are, on average, metal poor with respect to the non-LAE galaxy population ($W_λ$(Ly$α$) $\leq20\unicode{xC5}$) with $Z_{\star}$$_{\rm{non-LAE}}\gtrsim 2 \times$ $Z_{\star}$$_{\rm{LAE}}$. Finally, based on the best-fitting stellar models, we estimate that the increasing strength of the stellar ionizing spectrum towards lower $Z_{\star}$ is responsible for $\simeq 15-25\%$ of the observed variation in $W_λ$(Ly$α$) across our sample, with the remaining contribution ($\simeq 75-85\%$) being due to a decrease in the HI/dust covering fractions in low $Z_{\star}$ galaxies.

The Intergalactic medium transmission towards z>4 galaxies with VANDELS and the impact of dust attenuation

Aims. Our aim is to estimate the intergalactic medium transmission towards UV-selected star-forming galaxies at redshift 4 and above and study the effect of the dust attenuation on these measurements. Methods. The ultra-violet spectrum of high redshift galaxies is a combination of their intrinsic emission and the effect of the Inter-Galactic medium (IGM) absorption along their line of sight. Using data coming from the unprecedented deep spectroscopy from the VANDELS ESO public survey carried out with the VIMOS instrument we compute both the dust extinction and the mean transmission of the IGM as well as its scatter from a set of 281 galaxies at z>3.87. Because of a degeneracy between the dust content of the galaxy and the IGM, we first estimate the stellar dust extinction parameter E(B-V) and study the result as a function of the dust prescription. Using these measurements as constraint for the spectral fit we estimate the IGM transmission Tr(Lyalpha). Both photometric and spectroscopic SED fitting are done using the SPectroscopy And photometRy fiTting tool for Astronomical aNalysis (SPARTAN) that is able to fit the spectral continuum of the galaxies as well as photometric data. Results. Using the classical Calzetti's attenuation law we find that E(B-V) goes from 0.11 at z=3.99 to 0.08 at z=5.15. These results are in very good agreement with previous measurements from the literature. We estimate the IGM transmission and find that the transmission is decreasing with increasing redshift from Tr(Lyalpha)=0.53 at z=3.99 to 0.28 at z=5.15. We also find a large standard deviation around the average transmission that is more than 0.1 at every redshift. Our results are in very good agreement with both previous measurements from AGN studies and with theoretical models.

The Lyman continuum escape fraction and the Mean Free Path of hydrogen ionizing photons for bright z~4 QSOs from SDSS DR14

One of the major challenges in observational cosmology is related to the redshift evolution of the average hydrogen ionization in the Universe. In order to probe the ionization level of the IGM and the ionization capabilities of bright QSOs at z=4, we have selected a sample of 2508 QSOs from the SDSS survey (DR14) at 3.6<z<4.6 and -29.0<M1450<-26.0. Starting from UV/optical rest-frame spectra of the whole QSO sample, we estimate the escape fraction and free path individually for each of them. We calculate the Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fraction as the flux ratio blue-ward (~900 A rest-frame) and red-ward (~930 A rest-frame) of the Lyman limit. We then obtain the probability distribution function (PDF) of the individual free paths of the QSOs in the sample and study its evolution in luminosity and redshift, comparing our results with the ones found in literature so far. We find a lower limit to the mean LyC escape fraction of 0.49, in agreement with the values obtained for both brighter and fainter sources at the same redshift. We show that the free paths of ionizing photons are characterized by a skewed distribution function peaked at low values, with an average of ~49-59 proper Mpc at z~4, after excluding possible associated absorbers. This value is larger than the one obtained at the same redshift by many authors in the literature using different techniques. Finally, we also find that the redshift evolution of this parameter results to be possibly milder than previously thought. Our new determination of the mean free path at z~4 implies that previous estimates of the HI photo-ionization rate Gamma_HI available in the literature should be corrected by a factor of 1.2-1.7. These results have important implications if extrapolated at the epoch of reionization.
