Extra-planar gas in the spiral galaxy NGC 4559

We present 21-cm line observations of the spiral galaxy NGC 4559, made with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. We have used them to study the HI distribution and kinematics, the relative amount and distribution of luminous and dark matter in this galaxy and, in particular, the presence of extra-planar gas. Our data do reveal the presence of such a component, in the form of a thick disk, with a mass of 5.9 x 10^8 Mo (one tenth of the total HI mass) and a mean rotation velocity 25-50 km/s lower than that of the thin disk. The extra-planar gas may be the result of galactic fountains but accretion from the IGM cannot be ruled out. With this study we confirm that lagging, thick HI layers are likely to be common in spiral galaxies.

Stationary fluid models for the extra-planar gas in spiral galaxies

We show how to construct families of stationary hydrodynamical configurations that reproduce the observed vertical gradient of the rotation velocity of the extra-planar gas in spiral galaxies. We then present a simple model for the lagging halo of the spiral galaxy NGC 891, which is in agreement with the HI observations. Our method is based on well known properties of baroclinic solutions, and it is an elementary application of a much more general and flexible method.

Further Clues to the Nature of Composite LINER/HII Galaxies

We have analyzed new, archival and published high resolution radio and X-ray observations of a sample of composite LINER/HII galaxies known to exhibit AGN-like properties. Five of the 16 AGN candidates have milliarcsecond-scale detections and are found to display a compact, flat spectrum, high brightness temperature radio core, four of which also exhibit extended radio emission. Five of the eight AGN candidates with available high resolution X-ray observations were found to possess a hard X-ray nuclear source, two of which have no milliarcsecond radio detection. The combined high resolution radio and X-ray data yield a 50% detection rate of low luminosity AGN among the AGN candidates, which translates into a 12% detection rate for the entire composite LINER/HII sample. In the sources where the AGN has been unambiguously detected, the ionizing power of the AGN is not sufficient to generate the observed emission lines, unless the hard X-rays are heavily obscured. We attempt to apply a canonical advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) and jet model to the sample sources in order to explain the observed radio and X-ray emission. While ADAFs may be responsible for the observed emission in submillijansky radio cores like NGC 7331, they do not appear consistent with the radio emission observed in the milliarcsecond-scale radio detected cores; the latter sources are more likely to have an energetically important contribution from a radio-emitting jet.

The line-of-sight warp of the spiral galaxy ESO 123-G23

We present 3-D modelling of the distribution and kinematics of the neutral hydrogen in the spiral galaxy ESO 123-G23. The optical appearance of this galaxy is an almost perfectly edge-on disk, while the neutral hydrogen is found to extend vertically out to about 15 kpc on either side of the galactic plane. The HI layer and the major features of the HI data cube can be successfully explained by a model dominated by a strong (about 30 degrees) line-of-sight warp. Other models were tried, including a flare model and a two-component model, but they clearly do not reproduce the data. This is the first unambiguous detection of a galactic warp that has the maximum deviation from the central plane almost along the line-of-sight. No evidence for the presence of any companion galaxy is found in the HI data cube. Line-of-sight warps in edge-on galaxies are probably frequent, but escape detection as they are too weak. Moreover they may easily be mistaken as flares or 'thick disks'. A 3-D modelling of the HI layer as the one presented here is needed in order to distinguish between these possibilities.
