A Fabry-Perot interferometer with quantum mirrors: nonlinear light transport and rectification

Optical transport represents a natural route towards fast communications, and it is currently used in large scale data transfer. The progressive miniaturization of devices for information processing calls for the microscopic tailoring of light transport and confinement at length scales appropriate for the upcoming technologies. With this goal in mind, we present a theoretical analysis of a one-dimensional Fabry-Perot interferometer built with two highly saturable nonlinear mirrors: a pair of two-level systems. Our approach captures non-linear and non-reciprocal effects of light transport that were not reported previously. Remarkably, we show that such an elementary device can operate as a microscopic integrated optical rectifier.

Quantized form factor shift in the presence of free electron laser radiation

In electron scattering, the target form factors contribute significantly to the diffraction pattern and carry information on the target electromagnetic charge distribution. Here we show that the presence of electromagnetic radiation, as intense as currently available in Free Electron Lasers, shifts the dependence of the target form factors by a quantity that depends on the number of photons absorbed or emitted by the electron as well as on the parameters of the electromagnetic radiation. As example, we show the impact of intense ultraviolet and soft X-ray radiation on elastic electron scattering by Ne-like Argon ion and by Xenon atom. We find that the shift brought by the radiation to the form factor is in the order of some percent. Our results may open up a new avenue to explore matter with the assistance of laser.

Analytical evaluation of atomic form factors: application to Rayleigh scattering

Atomic form factors are widely used for the characterization of targets and specimens, from crystallography to biology. By using recent mathematical results, here we derive an analytical expression for the atomic form factor within the independent particle model constructed from nonrelativistic screened hydrogenic wavefunctions. The range of validity of this analytical expression is checked by comparing the analytically obtained form factors with the ones obtained within the Hartee-Fock method. As an example, we apply our analytical expression for the atomic form factor to evaluate the differential cross section for Rayleigh scattering off neutral atoms.

Double-Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Y-type atomic system

We study the absorption and dispersion properties of a weak tunable probe field in a four-level Y-type atomic system driven by two strong laser (coupling) fields within the framework of density matrix formalism. It is found that the probe absorption profile displays double-electromagnetically induced transparency (double-EIT) and it is shown how to control it by changing the Rabi frequencies as well as the atom field detuning of the coupling fields.

Parametrization of the angular correlation and degree of linear polarization in two-photon decays of hydrogen-like ions

The two-photon decay in hydrogen-like ions is investigated within the framework of second order perturbation theory and Dirac's relativistic equation. Special attention is paid to the angular correlation of the emitted photons as well as to the degree of linear polarization of one of the two photons, if the second is just observed under given angles. Expressions for the angular correlation and the degree of linear polarization are expanded in terms of $\cosθ$-polynomials, whose coefficients depend on the atomic number and the energy sharing of the emitted photons. The effects of including higher (electric and magnetic) multipoles upon the emitted photon pairs beyond the electric-dipole approximation are also discussed. Calculations of the coefficients are performed for the transitions $2s_{1/2}\rightarrow1s_{1/2}$, $3d_{3/2}\rightarrow1s_{1/2}$ and $3d_{5/2}\rightarrow1s_{1/2}$, along the entire hydrogen isoelectronic sequence ($1\le Z \le 100$).

Underlining some limitations of the statistical formalism in quantum mechanics: Reply to the Comment of Bodor and Diósi

In a paper of us, it is showed that Density Matrices do not provide a complete description of ensembles of states in quantum mechanics, since they lack measurable information concerning the preparation of the ensembles. Bodor and Diósi have later posted a comment on that article, which agrees on some points of it but disagrees on some others. This reply is intended to clarify the discussion.

Relativistic total cross section and angular distribution for Rayleigh scattering by atomic hydrogen

We study the total cross section and angular distribution in Rayleigh scattering by hydrogen atom in the ground state, within the framework of Dirac relativistic equation and second-order perturbation theory. The relativistic states used for the calculations are obtained by making use of the finite basis set method and expressed in terms of B-splines and B-polynomials. We pay particular attention to the effects that arise from higher (non-dipole) terms in the expansion of the electron-photon interaction. It is shown that the angular distribution of scattered photons, while it is symmetric with respect to the scattering angle $θ$=90$^\circ$ within the electric dipole approximation, becomes asymmetric when higher multipoles are taken into account. The analytical expression of the angular distribution is parametrized in terms of Legendre polynomials. Detailed calculations are performed for photons in the energy range 0.5 to 10 keV. When possible, results are compared with previous calculations.

Angular correlations in the two--photon decay of helium--like heavy ions

The two-photon decay of heavy, helium-like ions is investigated based on second-order perturbation theory and Dirac's relativistic equation. Special attention has been paid to the angular emission of the two photons, i.e., how the angular correlation function depends on the shell structure of the ions in their initial and final states. Moreover, the effects from the (electric and magnetic) non-dipole terms in the expansion of the electron-photon interaction are discussed. Detailed calculations have been carried out for the two-photon decay of the $1s2s \, ^1S_0$, $1s2s \, ^3S_1$ and $1s2p \, ^3P_0$ states of helium-like xenon Xe$^{52+}$, gold Au$^{77+}$ and uranium U$^{90+}$ ions.

Sivers function in constituent quark models

A formalism to evaluate the Sivers function, developed for calculations in constituent quark models, is applied to the Isgur-Karl model. A non-vanishing Sivers asymmetry, with opposite signs for the u and d flavor, is found; the Burkardt sum rule is fulfilled up to 2 %. Nuclear effects in the extraction of neutron single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off 3He are also evaluated. In the kinematics of JLab, it is found that the nuclear effects described by an Impulse Approximation approach are under control.

Sivers Asymmetry for the proton and the neutron

A formalism is presented to evaluate the Sivers function in constituent quark models. A non-relativistic reduction of the scheme is performed and applied to the Isgur-Karl model. The results obtained are consistent with a sizable Sivers effect and the signs for the u and d flavor contributions turn out to be opposite. The Burkardt Sum Rule is fulfilled to a large extent. After the estimate of the QCD evolution of the results from the momentum scale of the model to the experimental one, a reasonable agreement with the available data is obtained. A calculation of nuclear effects in the extraction of neutron single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off 3He is also described. In the kinematics of forth-coming experiments at JLab, it is found that the nuclear effects arising within an Impulse Approximation approach are under control.

A quark model analysis of the Sivers function

We develop a formalism to evaluate the Sivers function. The approach is well suited for calculations which use constituent quark models to describe the structure of the nucleon. A non-relativistic reduction of the scheme is performed and applied to the Isgur-Karl model of hadron structure. The results obtained are consistent with a sizable Sivers effect and the signs for the u and d flavor contributions turn out to be opposite. This pattern is in agreement with the one found analyzing, in the same model, the impact parameter dependent generalized parton distributions. The Burkardt Sum Rule turns out to be fulfilled to a large extent. We estimate the QCD evolution of our results from the momentum scale of the model to the experimental one and obtain reasonable agreement with the available data.
