The Arithmetic of Distributions in Free Probability Theory

We give an analytical approach to the definition of additive and multiplicative free convolutions which is based on the theory of Nevanlinna and of Schur functions. We consider the set of probability distributions as a semigroup $\bold M$ equipped with the operation of free convolution and prove a Khintchine type theorem for the factorization of elements of this semigroup. An element of $\bold M$ contains either indecomposable ("prime") factors or it belongs to a class, say $I_0$, of distributions without indecomposable factors. In contrast to the classical convolution semigroup in the free additive and multiplicative convolution semigroups the class $I_0$ consists of units (i.e. Dirac measures) only. Furthermore we show that the set of indecomposable elements is dense in $\bold M$.

Birth of a strongly connected giant in an inhomogeneous random digraph

We present and investigate a general model for inhomogeneous random digraphs with labeled vertices, where the arcs are generated independently, and the probability of inserting an arc depends on the labels of its endpoints and its orientation. For this model the critical point for the emergence of a giant component is determined via a branching process approach.

On the Second-Order Correlation Function of the Characteristic Polynomial of a Hermitian Wigner Matrix

We consider the asymptotics of the second-order correlation function of the characteristic polynomial of a random matrix. We show that the known result for a random matrix from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble essentially continues to hold for a general Hermitian Wigner matrix. Our proofs rely on an explicit formula for the exponential generating function of the second-order correlation function of the characteristic polynomial.

The rate of convergence of spectra of sample covariance matrices

It is shown that the Kolmogorov distance between the spectral distribution function of a random covariance matrix $\frac1p XX^T$, where $X$ is a $n\times p$ matrix with independent entries and the distribution function of the Marchenko-Pastur law is of order $O(n^{-1/2})$. The bounds hold {\it uniformly} for any $p$, including $\frac pn$ equal or close to 1.

On the Circular Law

We consider the joint distribution of real and imaginary parts of eigenvalues of random matrices with independent real entries with mean zero and unit variance. We prove the convergence of this distribution to the uniform distribution on the unit disc without assumptions on the existence of a density for the distribution of entries. We assume however that the entries have sub-Gaussian tails or are sparsely non-zero.

Limit Theorems in Free Probability Theory I

Based on a new analytical approach to the definition of additive free convolution on probability measures on the real line we prove free analogs of limit theorems for sums for non-identically distributed random variables in classical Probability Theory.
