Topological Wannier excitons in bismuth chalcogenide nanosheets I: Single-particle properties

We analyze the topology and dispersion of bulk Wannier excitons in nanosheets of topological insulators in the family of bismuth chalcogenides. Our main finding is that excitons also inherit the topology of the electronic bands, quantified by the skyrmion winding numbers of the constituent electron and hole pseudospins as a function of the total exciton momentum. We furthermore show that every $s$-wave exciton state consists of a quartet with a degenerate and quadratically dispersing nonchiral doublet, and a chiral doublet with one linearly dispersing mode as in transition metal dichalcogenides. We also demonstrate the existence of topological edge states of chiral excitons arising from the bulk-boundary correspondence.

Biexcitons in Highly Excited CdSe Nanoplatelets

We present the phase diagram of free charges (electrons and holes), excitons, and biexcitons in highly excited CdSe nanoplatelets that predicts a crossover to a biexciton-dominated region at easily attainable low temperatures or high photoexcitation densities. Our findings extend previous work describing only free charges and excitons by introducing biexcitons into the equation of state, while keeping the exciton and biexciton binding energies constant in view of the relatively low density of free charges in this material. Our predictions are experimentally testable in the near future and offer the prospect of creating a quantum degenerate, and possibly even superfluid, biexciton gas. Furthermore, we also provide simple expressions giving analytical insight into the regimes of photoexcitation densities and temperatures in which excitons and biexcitons dominate the response of the nanoplatelets.

Effects of Two-Dimensional Material Thickness and Surrounding Dielectric Medium on Coulomb Interactions and Excitons

We examine the impact of quantum confinement on the interaction potential between two charges in two-dimensional semiconductor nanosheets in solution. The resulting effective potential depends on two length scales, namely the thickness $d$ and an emergent length scale $d^* \equiv εd / ε_{\text{sol}}$, where $ε$ is the permittivity of the nanosheet and $ε_{\text{sol}}$ is the permittivity of the solvent. In particular, quantum confinement, and not electrostatics, is responsible for the logarithmic behavior of the effective potential for separations smaller than $d$, instead of the one-over-distance bulk Coulomb interaction. Finally, we corroborate that the exciton binding energy also depends on the two-dimensional exciton Bohr radius $a_0$ in addition to the length scales $d$ and $d^*$ and analyze the consequences of this dependence.

Explaining Observed Stability of Excitons in Highly Excited CdSe Nanoplatelets

Two-dimensional electron-hole gases in colloidal semiconductors have a wide variety of applications. Therefore, a proper physical understanding of these materials is of great importance. In this paper we present a detailed theoretical analysis of the recent experimental results by Tomar et al., that show an unexpected stability of excitons in CdSe nanoplatelets at high photoexcitation densities. Including the screening effects by free charges on the exciton properties, our analysis shows that CdSe nanoplatelets behave very differently from bulk CdSe, and in particular do not show a crossover to an electron-hole plasma in the density range studied experimentally, even though there is substantial overlap between the excitons at the highest densities achieved. From our results we also conclude that a quantum degenerate exciton gas is realized in the experiments, which opens the prospect of observing superfluidity in CdSe nanoplatelets in the near future.

Massive Dirac fermions from holography

We provide a framework to compute the dynamics of massive Dirac fermions using holography. To this end we consider two bulk Dirac fermions that are coupled via a Yukawa interaction and propagate on a gravitational background in which a mass deformation is introduced. Moreover, we discuss the incorporation of this approach in semiholography. The resulting undoped fermionic spectral functions indeed show that the Yukawa coupling induces a gap in the holographic spectrum, whereas the semiholographic extension is in general gapped but additionally contains a quantum critical point at which the effective fermion mass vanishes and a topological phase transition occurs. Furthermore, when introducing doping, the fermionic spectral functions show a quantum phase transition between a gapped material and a Fermi liquid.
