Transverse-energy distributions at midrapidity in $p$$+$$p$, $d$$+$Au, and Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$--200~GeV and implications for particle-production models

Measurements of the midrapidity transverse energy distribution, $d\Et/dη$, are presented for $p$$+$$p$, $d$$+$Au, and Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and additionally for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ and 130 GeV. The $d\Et/dη$ distributions are first compared with the number of nucleon participants $N_{\rm part}$, number of binary collisions $N_{\rm coll}$, and number of constituent-quark participants $N_{qp}$ calculated from a Glauber model based on the nuclear geometry. For Au$+$Au, $\mean{d\Et/dη}/N_{\rm part}$ increases with $N_{\rm part}$, while $\mean{d\Et/dη}/N_{qp}$ is approximately constant for all three energies. This indicates that the two component ansatz, $dE_{T}/dη\propto (1-x) N_{\rm part}/2 + x N_{\rm coll}$, which has been used to represent $E_T$ distributions, is simply a proxy for $N_{qp}$, and that the $N_{\rm coll}$ term does not represent a hard-scattering component in $E_T$ distributions. The $dE_{T}/dη$ distributions of Au$+$Au and $d$$+$Au are then calculated from the measured $p$$+$$p$ $E_T$ distribution using two models that both reproduce the Au$+$Au data. However, while the number-of-constituent-quark-participant model agrees well with the $d$$+$Au data, the additive-quark model does not.

Measurement of Direct Photons in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

We report the measurement of direct photons at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 200 GeV. The direct photon signal was extracted for the transverse-momentum range of 4 GeV/c < p_T < 22 GeV/c, using a statistical method to subtract decay photons from the inclusive-photon sample. The direct-photon nuclear-modification factor R_AA was calculated as a function of p_T for different Au+Au collision centralities using the measured p+p direct-photon spectrum and compared to theoretical predictions. R_AA was found to be consistent with unity for all centralities over the entire measured p_T range. Theoretical models that account for modifications of initial-direct-photon production due to modified-parton-distribution functions in Au and the different isospin composition of the nuclei, predict a modest change of R_AA from unity and are consistent with the data. Models with compensating effects of the quark-gluon plasma on high-energy photons, such as suppression of jet-fragmentation photons and induced-photon bremsstrahlung from partons traversing the medium, are also consistent with this measurement.

Critical Opacity - a possible explanation of the fast thermalisation times seen in RHIC experiments

The Nambu Jona-Lasinio Lagrangian offers an explication of the seemingly contradictory observations that a) the energy loss in the entrance channel of heavy ion reactions is not sufficient to thermalize the system and that b) the observed hadron cross sections are in almost perfect agreement with hydrodynamical calculations. According to this scenario, a critical opacity develops close to the chiral phase transition which equilibrates and hadronizes the expanding system very effectively. It creates as well radial flow and, if the system is not isotropic, finite $v_2$ values.

Strange baryons in a hot and dense medium within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

Using an extended version of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model we build a simple description of the baryons as diquark-quark bound states. First, a description of the diquarks in a dense and hot medium is presented. Then, we introduce the formalism for the baryons based on the Faddeev equation associated with the so-called `` static approximation'' which finally gives a Bethe-Salpeter equation in the diquarks-quarks channel. By identifying the baryons with the bound states, we can obtain a description of their properties. In particular, we obtain the right mass spectrum for the proton, $Λ$, $Ξ$, and $Σ$ at T=0 and $μ=0$. We extend the formalism to finite temperature and density to obtain a description of the mass change of these baryons in the medium.

Hanbury Brown-Ttiss Correlation Functions from Event Generators: A Reliable Approach to Determine the Size of the Emitting Source in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions?

Employing NEXUS, one of the most recent simulation programs for heavy ions collisions, we investigate in detail the Hanbury-Twiss correlation function for charged pions for reactions 158 GeV Pb+Pb. For this study we supplement the standard simulation program by electromagnetic interactions. We find that the string fragmentation introduces strong space-momentum correlations and the freeze out times of the correlated pairs have a wide distribution. Both has a strong influence on the apparent source radius determined from the measured correlation correlation function. An equally strong influence is observed for the final state electromagnetic interaction.

Thermodynamics of the 3-flavor NJL model : chiral symmetry breaking and color superconductivity

Employing an extended three flavor version of the NJL model we discuss in detail the phase diagram of quark matter. The presence of quark as well as of diquark condensates gives raise to a rich structure of the phase diagram. We study in detail the chiral phase transition and the color superconductivity as well as color flavor locking as a function of the temperature and chemical potentials of the system.
