Hadron Physics Opportunities at FAIR

This White Paper outlines a coordinated, decade-spanning programme of hadron and QCD studies anchored at the GSI/FAIR accelerator complex. Profiting from intense deuteron, proton and pion beams coupled with high-rate capable detectors and an international theory effort, the initiative addresses fundamental questions related to the strong interaction featuring confinement and dynamical mass generation. This includes our understanding of hadron-hadron interactions and the composition of hadrons through mapping the baryon and meson spectra, including exotic states, and quantifying hadron structure. This interdisciplinary research connects topics in the fields of nuclear, heavy-ion, and (nuclear) astro (particle) physics, linking, for example, terrestrial data to constraints on neutron star structure. A phased roadmap with SIS100 accelerator start-up and envisaged detector upgrades will yield precision cross sections, transition form factors, in-medium spectral functions, and validated theory inputs. Synergies with external programmes at international accelerator facilities worldwide are anticipated. The programme is expected to deliver decisive advances in our understanding of non-perturbative (strong) QCD and astrophysics, and high-rate detector and data-science technology.

Flavor neutrinos as unstable particles: an interaction picture view

This paper reviews the similarities in the behavior of unstable particles and oscillating neutrinos using perturbation theory within the interaction picture of quantum field theory. We begin by examining how decaying systems are studied in the interaction picture and then demonstrate how similar calculations can be performed to determine the transition probabilities for flavor oscillations. Notably, the expressions for neutrino oscillations and particle decays are identical in the short-time range. Furthermore, we show that the flavor oscillation formula derived through this method matches, within the adopted approximation, the one obtained using the flavor Fock space approach.

Constraining the low-energy S=-2 meson-baryon interaction with two-particle correlations

The two-particle correlation technique applied to $K^-Λ$ pairs in pp collisions at LHC recently provided the most precise data on the strangeness $S=-2$ meson-baryon interaction. In this letter, we use for the first time femtoscopic data to constrain the parameters of a low-energy effective QCD Lagrangian. The tuned model delivers new insights on the molecular nature of the $Ξ(1620)$ and $Ξ(1690)$ states. This procedure opens the possibility to determine higher order corrections, directly constraining QCD effective models particularly in the multi-strange and charm sectors.

Boosting unstable particles

In relativity, there is no absolute notion of simultaneity, because two clocks that are in different places can always be desynchronized by a Lorentz boost. Here, we explore the implications of this effect for the quantum theory of unstable particles. We show that, when a wavefunction is boosted, its tails travel one to the past and the other to the future. As a consequence, in the new frame of reference, the particle is in a quantum superposition "decayed + non decayed", where the property "decayed-ness" is entangled with the position. Since a particle cannot be localised in a region smaller than the Compton wavelength, there is a non-zero lower bound on this effect, which is fundamental in nature. The surprising implication is that, in a quantum world, decay probabilities can never be Lorentz-invariant. We show that this insight was the missing ingredient to reconcile the seemingly conflicting views about time dilation in relativistic quantum mechanics and quantum field theory.

Strong decays of excited vector mesons

We study two nonets of excited vector mesons, predominantly corresponding to radially excited vector mesons with quantum numbers $n\hspace{0.08cm} ^{2S+1}L_{J}$ $=2^3S_1$ and to orbitally excited vector mesons with quantum numbers $n\hspace{0.08cm} ^{2S+1}L_{J}=1^3D_1$. We evaluate two types of decays of these mesons: into two pseudoscalar mesons and into a pseudoscalar and a ground-state vector meson. We compare the results with experimental data taken from PDG. We also make predictions for the strange-antistrange state in the $1^3D_1$ nonet denoted as $ϕ(1930)$, which has not yet been discovered.

Three-flavor chiral effective model with four baryonic multiplets within the mirror assignment

We study three-flavor octet baryons by using the so-called extended Linear Sigma Model (eLSM). Within a quark-diquark picture, the requirement of a mirror assignment naturally leads to the consideration of four spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ baryon multiplets. A reduction of the Lagrangian to the two-flavor case leaves four doublets of nucleonic states which mix to form the experimentally observed states $N(939)$, $N(1440)$, $N(1535)$ and $N(1650)$. We determine the parameters of the nucleonic part of the Lagrangian from a fit to masses and decay properties of the aforementioned states. By tracing their masses when chiral symmetry is restored, we conclude that the pairs $N(939)$, $N(1535)$ and $N(1440)$, $N(1650)$ form chiral partners.

Phenomenology of light mesons within a chiral approach

The so-called extended linear sigma model is a chiral model with (pseudo)scalar and (axial-)vector mesons. It is based on the requirements of (global) chiral symmetry and dilatation invariance. The purpose of this model is the description of the hadron phenomenology up to 1.7 GeV. We present the latest theoretical results, which show a good agreement with the experiment.

Scalar mesons in a linear sigma model with (axial-)vector mesons

The structure of the scalar mesons has been a subject of debate for many decades. In this work we look for $\bar{q}q$ states among the physical resonances using an extended Linear Sigma Model that contains scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons both in the non-strange and strange sectors. We perform global fits of meson masses, decay widths and amplitudes in order to ascertain whether the scalar $\bar{q}q$ states are below or above 1 GeV. We find the scalar states above 1 GeV to be preferred as $\bar{q}q$ states.

Computation of pion and kaon heavy ion multiplicities in a gluon-meson model

In high energy Heavy Ion Collisions, the onset of the quark-gluon plasma is the colour glass condensate, dominated by gluons. The final state is hadronic, and dominated by pions and kaons. Here we investigate an effective approach of QCD with these bosonic fields and which can help to describe the transition of gluons into light mesons. Formally, our approach consists in integrating out the quark fields from the QCD path integral, utilizing auxiliary fields. In this way the fermionic fields are replaced by light mesons, such as the pions and sigma field. We apply our effective action to compute the number of pions and kaons per gluon emitted by a Boltzmann gluon gas, their multiplicities as function of a gluon mass. We conclude that an effective gluon mass remains finite at T=Tc.

Physics with the KLOE-2 experiment at the upgraded DA$ϕ$NE

Investigation at a $ϕ$--factory can shed light on several debated issues in particle physics. We discuss: i) recent theoretical development and experimental progress in kaon physics relevant for the Standard Model tests in the flavor sector, ii) the sensitivity we can reach in probing CPT and Quantum Mechanics from time evolution of entangled kaon states, iii) the interest for improving on the present measurements of non-leptonic and radiative decays of kaons and eta/eta$^\prime$ mesons, iv) the contribution to understand the nature of light scalar mesons, and v) the opportunity to search for narrow di-lepton resonances suggested by recent models proposing a hidden dark-matter sector. We also report on the $e^+ e^-$ physics in the continuum with the measurements of (multi)hadronic cross sections and the study of gamma gamma processes.

Scalar nonet quarkonia and the scalar glueball: mixing and decays in an effective chiral approach

We study the strong and electromagnetic decay properties of scalar mesons above 1 GeV within a chiral approach. The scalar-isoscalar states are treated as mixed states of quarkonia and glueball configurations. A fit to the experimental mass and decay rates listed by the Particle Data group is performed to extract phenomenological constraints on the nature of the scalar resonances and to the issue of the glueball decays. A comparison to other experimental results and to other theoretical approaches in the scalar meson sector is discussed.

Baryonic masses based on the NJL model

We employ the Nambu Jona--Lasinio model to determine the vacuum pressure on the quarks in a baryon and hence their density inside. Then we estimate the baryonic masses by implementing the local density approximation for the mean field quark energies obtained in a uniform and isotropic system. We obtain a fair agreement with the experimental masses.
