First Results from a XMM-Newton Survey of a Distance-Limited (D < 22 Mpc) Sample of Seyfert Galaxies. II - The Galactic Serendipitous Sources

We present preliminary results from a study with XMM-Newton of the galactic serendipitous sources in a sample of 28 nearby Seyfert galaxies (with D < 22 Mpc). We concentrate here on a subset of four galaxies, namely: NGC3185, NGC3486, NGC3941, and NGC4565. In these galaxies we found six ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX). The large collecting area of XMM-Newton makes the statistics sufficient to perform spectral fitting with simple models. We shortly discuss the results obtained so far.

Post-LEP CMSSM Benchmarks for Supersymmetry

We introduce a set of CMSSM benchmark scenarios that take into account the constraints from LEP, Tevatron, $b \to s γ$, $g_μ- 2$ and cosmology. The benchmark points are chosen to span the range of different generic possibilities, including focus-point models, points where coannihilation effects on the relic density are important, and points with rapid relic annihilation via direct-channel Higgs poles, as well as points with smaller sparticle masses. We make initial estimates of the physics reaches of different accelerators, including the LHC, and $e^+ e^-$ colliders in the sub- and multi-TeV ranges. We stress the complementarity of hadron and lepton colliders, with the latter favoured for non-strongly-interacting particles and precision measurements.

High Transverse Momentum Physics at the Large Hadron Collider

This note summarizes many detailed physics studies done by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations for the LHC, concentrating on processes involving the production of high mass states. These studies show that the LHC should be able to elucidate the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking and to study a variety of other topics related to physics at the TeV scale. In particular, a Higgs boson with couplings given by the Standard Model is observable in several channels over the full range of allowed masses. Its mass and some of its couplings will be determined. If supersymmetry is relevant to electroweak interactions, it will be discovered and the properties of many supersymmetric particles elucidated. Other new physics, such as the existence of massive gauge bosons and extra dimensions can be searched for extending existing limits by an order of magnitude or more.

Proposed Post-LEP Benchmarks for Supersymmetry

We propose a new set of supersymmetric benchmark scenarios, taking into account the constraints from LEP, b to s gamma, g_mu - 2 and cosmology. We work in the context of the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) with universal soft supersymetry-breaking masses and assume that R parity is conserved. We propose benchmark points that exemplify the different generic possibilities, including focus-point models, points where coannihilation effects on the relic density are important, and points with rapid relic annihilation via direct-channel Higgs poles. We discuss the principal decays and signatures of the different classes of benchmark scenarios, and make initial estimates of the physics reaches of different accelerators, including the Tevatron collider, the LHC, and e+ e- colliders in the sub- and multi-TeV ranges. We stress the complementarity of hadron and lepton colliders, with the latter favoured for non-strongly-interacting particles and precision measurements. We mention features that could usefully be included in future versions of supersymmetric event generators.

Gamma-Ray Imaging with the Coded Mask IBIS Telescope

The IBIS telescope onboard INTEGRAL, the ESA gamma-ray space mission to be launched in 2002, is a soft gamma-ray (20 keV - 10 MeV) device based on a coded aperture imaging system. We describe here basic concepts of coded masks, the imaging system of the IBIS telescope, and the standard data analysis procedures to reconstruct sky images. This analysis includes, for both the low-energy detector layer (ISGRI) and the high energy layer (PICSIT), iterative procedures which decode recorded shadowgrams, search for and locate sources, clean for secondary lobes, and then rotate and compose sky images. These procedures will be implemented in the Quick Look and Standard Analysis of the INTEGRAL Science Data Center (ISDC) as IBIS Instrument Specific Software.

DISCoS - a detector-independent software for the on-ground testing and calibration of scientific payloads using the ESA Packet Telemetry and Telecommand Standards

The ESA Packet Telemetry and Telecommand Standards accommodate the requirements of a great variety of scientific space missions, thus providing a standard basis for cost-effective and technically compatible developments of on-board and on-ground data handling systems for a wide range of projects. This paper describes the design and the implementation of a detector-independent software, running on Unix platforms, which has been developed for the near real time acquisition, archiving, and basic processing of the ESA based telemetry and telecommand data produced during the on ground testing and calibration of various X- and $γ$-ray space borne detectors.

XMM-Newton monitoring of X-ray variability in the quasar PKS 0558-504

We present the temporal analysis of X-ray observations of the radio-loud Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) PKS 0558-504 obtained during the XMM-Newton Calibration and Performance Verification (Cal/PV) phase. The long term light curve is characterized by persistent variability with a clear tendency for the X-ray continuum to harden when the count rate increases. Another strong correlation on long time scales has been found between the variability in the hard band and the total flux. On shorter time scales the most relevant result is the presence of smooth modulations, with characteristic time of ~ 2 hours observed in each individual observation. The short term spectral variability turns out to be rather complex but can be described by a well defined pattern in the hardness ratio-count rate plane.

Precision Physics at the LHC

A large number of precision measurements will be possible with the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Examples from W physics, Drell-Yan production of lepton pairs, Triple-Gauge Couplings, top physics, Higgs and Supersymmetry are discussed.
