Influence of ferroelastic domain walls on thermal conductivity

Enabling on-demand control of heat flow is key for the development of next-generation electronic devices, solid-state heat pumps, and thermal logic. However, precise and agile tuning of the relevant microscopic material parameters for adjusting thermal conductivities remains elusive. Here, we study several single crystals of lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO$_{3}$) with different domain structures and show that ferroelastic domain walls behave as boundaries that act like efficient controllers to govern thermal conductivity. At low temperature (3 K), we demonstrate a fivefold reduction in thermal conductivity induced by domain walls orthogonal to the heat flow and a twofold reduction when they are parallel to the heat flow. Atomistic calculations fully support this experimental observation. By breaking down phonon scattering mechanisms, we also analyze the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity to derive a quantitative relation between thermal conductivity variations and domain wall organization and density.

Dense and single-phase KTaO$_{3}$ ceramics obtained by spark plasma sintering

Potassium tantalate (KTaO$_{3}$) is a promising material for dielectric applications at low temperature. However, dense and single-phase ceramics cannot be obtained by conventional sintering because of the evaporation of potassium that leads to secondary phases. Here, we demonstrate that spark plasma sintering is a suitable method to obtain dense and single-phase KTaO$_{3}$ ceramics, by optimizing three parameters: initial composition, temperature, and pressure. A 2 mol% K-excess in the precursors leads to a large grain growth and dense single-phase ceramics. Without K-excess, a small amount of secondary phase (K$_{6}$Ta$_{10.8}$O$_{30}$) is observed at the surface but can be removed by polishing. At 10 K, the dielectric permittivity is 4 times higher in the ceramic from the 2 mol% K-excess powder, because of the larger grain size. The thermal conductivity decreases with decreasing grain size and stays above the thermal conductivity of KNbO$_{3}$ ceramics.

Influence of generated defects by Ar-implantation on the thermoelectric properties of ScN

Nowadays, making thermoelectric materials more efficient in energy conversion is still a challenge. In this work, to reduce the thermal conductivity and thus improve the overall thermoelectric performances, point and extended defects were generated in epitaxial 111-ScN thin films by implantation using argon ions. The films were investigated by structural, optical, electrical, and thermoelectric characterization methods. The results demonstrated that argon implantation leads to the formation of stable defects (up to 750 K operating temperature) were identified as interstitial type defect clusters and so-called argon-vacancy complexes. The insertion of those specific defects induces acceptor-type deep levels in the bandgap yielding to a reduce of the free carrier mobility. With a reduce electrical conductivity, the irradiated sample exhibited higher Seebeck coefficient maintaining the power factor of the film. The thermal conductivity is strongly reduced from 12 to 3 W.m-1.K-1 at 300 K, showing the effect of defects in increasing phonon scattering. Subsequent high temperature annealing, at 1573 K, leads to the progressive evolution of defects: the initial clusters of interstitial evolved to the benefit of smaller clusters and the formation of bubble. Thus, the number of free carriers, the resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient are almost restored but the mobility of the carriers remains low and a 30% drop in thermal conductivity is still effective (8.5 W.m-1.K-1). This study shows that the control defect engineering with defects introduced by irradiation using noble gases in a thermoelectric coating can be an attractive method to enhance the figure of merit of thermoelectric materials.

Time lag in transient cosmic accreting sources

We develop models for time lag between maxima of the source brightness in different wavelengths during a transient flash of luminosity connected with a short period of increase of the mass flux onto the central compact object. We derive a simple formula for finding the time delay among events in different wavelengths, valid in general for all disk accreting cosmic sources, and discuss quantitatively a model for time lag formation in AGNs. In close binaries with accretion disks the time lag is connected with effects of viscosity defining a radial motion of matter in the accretion disk. In AGN flashes, the falling matter has a low angular momentum, and the time lag is defined by the free fall time to the gravitating center. We show the validity of these models by means of several examples of galactic and extragalactic accreting sources.

Optical and X-ray behaviour of the high mass X-ray transient A0535+26/HDE245770 in February-March 2014

The optical behaviour of the Be star in the high-mass X-ray transient A0535+26/HDE245770 shows that at periastron the luminosity is typically enhanced by 0.02 to a few tenths magnitude, and the X-ray outburst occurs eight days after the periastron. Indeed, at the periastron an increase of the mass flux occurs. This sort of flush reaches the external part of the temporary accretion disk around the neutron star and moves to the hot central parts of the accretion disk and the neutron star surface. The time necessary for this way is dependent on the turbulent viscosity in the accretion disk, as discussed by Giovannelli, Bisnovatyi-Kogan, and Klepnev (2013) (GBK13). In this paper we will show the behaviour of this system in optical band around the predicted periastron passage on 21st February 2014, by using the GBK13 ephemeris that we used to schedule our spectroscopic and photometric optical observations. Spectroscopic unusual activity detected in the Balmer lines and the enhancement in the emission in B, V, and R bands around the periastron passage, and the subsequent X-ray event definitively demonstrate the existence of about 8 day delay between optical and X-ray flares.

Estimation of alpha-viscosity coefficient from observations of nonstationary disk accretion

The optical behaviour of the Be star in the high mass X-ray transient A0535+26/HDE245770 shows that at the periastron typically there is an enhancement in the luminosity of order 0.05 to few tenths mag, and the X- ray outburst happens about 8 days after the periastron. We construct a quantitative model of this event, basing on a nonstationary accretion disk behavior, connected with a high ellipticity of the orbital motion. We explain the observed time delay between the peaks of the optical and X-ray outbursts in this system by the time of radial motion of a matter in the accretion disk, after increase of the mass flux in the vicinity of a periastral point in the binary. This time is determined by the turbulent viscosity, with the parameter $ α=0.1-0.3$, estimated from the comparison of the model with observational data

Characterization of the Intra-Unit-Cell magnetic order in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

As in YBa2Cu3O6+x and HgBa2CuO8+d, the pseudo-gap state in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d is characterized by the existence of an intra-unit-cell magnetic order revealed by polarized neutron scattering technique. We report here a supplementary set of polarized neutron scattering measurements for which the direction of the magnetic moment is determined and the magnetic intensity is calibrated in absolute units. The new data allow a close comparison between bilayer systems YBa2Cu3O6+x and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d and rise important questions concerning the range of the magnetic correlations and the role of disorder around optimal doping.

Time delay between the optical and X-ray outbursts in the high mass X-ray transient A0535+26/HDE245770

The optical behaviour of the Be star in the high mass X-ray transient A0535+26/HDE245770 shows that at the periastron typically there is an enhancement in the luminosity of order 0.02 to few tenths mag, and the X-ray outburst happens about 8 days after the periastron. We construct a quantitative model of this event, basing on the a nonstationary accretion disk behavior, connected with a high ellipticity of the orbital motion. The ephemeris used in this paper -- JD$_{\rm opt-outb}$ = JD$_0$(2,444,944) $\pm$ n(111.0 $\pm$ 0.4) days are derived from the orbital period of the system P$_{\rm orb} = 111.0 \pm 0.4$ days, determined by Priedhorsky & Terrell (1983), and from the optical flare of December 5, 1981 (Giovannelli et al., 1985) (here after 811205-E; E stands for the Event occurred at that date) that triggered the subsequent X-ray outburst of December 13, 1981 (Nagase et al., 1982) (here after 811213-E). We explain the observed time delay between the peaks of the optical and X-ray outbursts in this system by the time of radial motion of the matter in the accretion disk, after an increase of the mass flux in the vicinity of a periastral point in the binary. This time is determined by the turbulent viscosity, with the parameter $α=0.1-0.3$. The increase of the mass flux is a sort of flush that reaches the external part of the accretion disk around the neutron star, producing an enhancement in the optical luminosity. The consequent X-ray flare happens when the matter reaches the hot central parts of the accretion disk, and the neutron star surface.

Evidence for Intra-Unit-Cell magnetic order in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

Polarized elastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed in the bilayer copper oxide system Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d, providing evidence for an intra unit cell (IUC) magnetic order inside the pseudo-gap state. That shows time reversal symmetry breaking in that state as already reported in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d through dichroism in circularly polarized photoemission experiments. The magnetic order displays the same characteristic features as the one previously reported for monolayer HgBa2CuO4+d and bilayer YBa2Cu3O6+x, demonstrating that this genuine phase is ubiquitous of the pseudo-gap of high temperature copper oxide materials.

Non-linear electronic transport and anomalous resistance fluctuations in the stripes state of $La_2NiO_{4.14}$

We report on electronic transport measurements in $La_2NiO_{4.14}$. Non-Ohmic and hysteretic $V(I)$ curves are measured for $T \lesssim$ 220 $K$. Large and non Gaussian resistance fluctuations can be observed, with strong cooling rate dependence. During a slow cooling, the resistance reaches plateaus and then suddenly jumps for $T \lesssim$ 100 $K$, evidencing a macroscopic freezing of the charges. Anti-correlation between time-series of orthogonal resistances is also observed. These results are discussed in the framework of the stripes state scenario.

Very high energy gamma-ray production inside the massive binary system Cyg X-1/HDE 226868

We apply the IC e$^\pm$ pair cascade model in order to investigate the possible $γ$-ray emission features from another compact massive binary of the microquasar type, Cyg X-1. We conclude that the observational constraints at lower energies (from MeV to GeV) suggest that the spectrum of electrons injected in the jet is likely steeper than in other TeV $γ$-ray microquasars. The cascade $γ$-ray spectrum produced by electrons with such spectrum in Cyg X-1 should be below the sensitivities of the MAGIC and VERITAS class Cherenkov telescopes. However, if the electron spectrum is flatter, then the highest TeV $γ$-ray fluxes are predicted at $\sim$7 hrs before and after the phase when the compact object is in front of the massive star. We suggest that Cherenkov telescopes should concentrate on these range of phases since the TeV flux can vary by a factor of $\sim$20 with the period of the Cyg X-1 binary system. Moreover, the model predicts clear anticorrelation of the GeV and TeV $γ$-ray emission. This feature can be tested by the future multiwavelength observations with the AGILE and GLAST telescopes in the GeV energy range and the MAGIC and VERITAS telescopes in the TeV energy range.

The broad-band X-ray spectrum of RE 0751+14 (PQ Gem)

RE 0751+14 is a member of the class of Soft Intermediate Polars. Unlike classical Intermediate Polars, they are characterized by the presence of a soft component in their X-ray spectra, in addition to the hard component typical of these systems. The broad-band coverage of the Narrow-Field instruments on board BeppoSAX is ideal for the study of such objects. Here we report the preliminary results of the analysis of a BeppoSAX pointing to RE 0751+14. Both components are clearly detected, and their temperature determined (~50 eV and ~40 keV), enabling the possibility of studying them simultaneously.
