Boundary and Interface CFTs from the Conformal Bootstrap

We explore some consequences of the crossing symmetry for defect conformal field theories, focusing on codimension one defects like flat boundaries or interfaces. We study surface transitions of the 3d Ising and other O(N) models through numerical solutions to the crossing equations with the method of determinants. In the extraordinary transition, where the low-lying spectrum of the surface operators is known, we use the bootstrap equations to obtain information on the bulk spectrum of the theory. In the ordinary transition the knowledge of the low-lying bulk spectrum allows to calculate the scale dimension of the relevant surface operator, which compares well with known results of two-loop calculations in 3d. Estimates of various OPE coefficients are also obtained. We also analyze in 4-epsilon dimensions the renormalization group interface between the O(N) model and the free theory and check numerically the results in 3d.

The Lorentz-invariant boundary action of the confining string and its universal contribution to the inter-quark potential

We study the boundary contribution to the low energy effective action of the open string describing the confining flux tube in gauge theories. The form of the boundary terms is strongly constrained by the requirement of Lorentz symmetry, which is spontaneously broken by the formation of a long confining flux tube in the vacuum. Writing the boundary action as an expansion in the derivatives of the Nambu-Goldstone modes describing the transverse fluctuations of the string, we single out and put in a closed form the first few Lorentz invariant boundary terms. We also evaluate the leading deviation from the Nambu-Goto string produced by the boundary action on the vacuum expectation value of the Wilson loop and we test this prediction in the 3d Ising gauge model. Our simulation attains a level of precision which is sufficient to test the contribution of this term.

Line defects in the 3d Ising model

We investigate the properties of the twist line defect in the critical 3d Ising model using Monte Carlo simulations. In this model the twist line defect is the boundary of a surface of frustrated links or, in a dual description, the Wilson line of the Z2 gauge theory. We test the hypothesis that the twist line defect flows to a conformal line defect at criticality and evaluate numerically the low-lying spectrum of anomalous dimensions of the local operators which live on the defect as well as mixed correlation functions of local operators in the bulk and on the defect.

Entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals from fusion algebra of twist fields

We study the entanglement and Renyi entropies of two disjoint intervals in minimal models of conformal field theory. We use the conformal block expansion and fusion rules of twist fields to define a systematic expansion in the elliptic parameter of the trace of the n-th power of the reduced density matrix. Keeping only the first few terms we obtain an approximate expression that is easily analytically continued to n->1, leading to an approximate formula for the entanglement entropy. These predictions are checked against some known exact results as well as against existing numerical data.

Dirac-Born-Infeld action from spontaneous breakdown of Lorentz symmetry in brane-world scenarios

In whatever Lorentz invariant theory, the presence of extended d-dimensional objects inside a higher dimensional bulk space-time, like for instance D-branes in string theories, induces a spontaneous breakdown of the Poincare' invariance of the bulk; however the effective action describing these extended objects should still respect this larger invariance through a non-linear realization of the full symmetry. Here the specific form of such a realization in presence of an electromagnetic field is uncovered. The Dirac-Born-Infeld type action for a D-brane turns out to be invariant under such transformations. Conversely it is explicitly demonstrated in some simple cases that the most general invariant action, as long as derivatives of the field strength (and second derivatives of the scalars) can be neglected, is a linear combination of terms of the Dirac-Born-Infeld type with different scale parameters. The string result is obtained if one further assumes that the theory depends upon a single length scale.

Linear broadening of the confining string in Yang-Mills theory at low temperature

The logarithmic broadening predicted by the systematic low-energy effective field theory for the confining string has recently been verified in numerical simulations of (2+1)-d SU(2) lattice Yang-Mills theory at zero temperature. The same effective theory predicts linear broadening of the string at low non-zero temperature. In this paper, we verify this prediction by comparison with very precise Monte Carlo data. The comparison involves no additional adjustable parameters, because the low-energy constants of the effective theory have already been fixed at zero temperature. It yields very good agreement between the underlying Yang-Mills theory and the effective string theory.

The Width of the Color Flux Tube at 2-Loop Order

The color flux tube connecting a static quark-anti-quark pair in Yang-Mills theory supports massless transverse fluctuations, which are the Goldstone bosons of spontaneously broken translation invariance. Just as in chiral perturbation theory, the dynamics of these Goldstone bosons is described by a systematic low-energy effective field theory. We use the effective theory to calculate the width of the fluctuating string at the 2-loop level, using both cylindrical and toroidal boundary conditions. At zero temperature, the string width diverges logarithmically with the quark-anti-quark distance r. On the other hand, at low but non-zero temperature T = 1/β, for r >> β, the string width diverges linearly.

The Width of the Confining String in Yang-Mills Theory

We investigate the transverse fluctuations of the confining string connecting two static quarks in (2+1)-d SU(2) Yang-Mills theory using Monte Carlo calculations. The exponentially suppressed signal is extracted from the large noise by a very efficient multi-level algorithm. The resulting width of the string increases logarithmically with the distance between the static quark charges. Corrections at intermediate distances due to universal higher order terms in the effective string action are calculated analytically. They accurately fit the numerical data.

Conformal Curves in Potts Model: Numerical Calculation

We calculated numerically the fractal dimension of the boundaries of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters of the $q$-state Potts model for integer and non-integer values of $q$ on the square lattice. In addition we calculated with high accuracy the fractal dimension of the boundary points of the same clusters on the square domain. Our calculation confirms that this curves can be described by SLE$_κ$.

Integrable structures in LGTs near the deconfinement transition

In this contribution we review some recent results about the emergence of 2D integrable systems in 3D Lattice Gauge Theories near the deconfinement transition. We focus on some concrete examples involving the flux tube thickness, the ratio of k-string tensions and Polyakov loops correlators in various models.

Entanglement entropy and the complex plane of replicas

The entanglement entropy of a subsystem $A$ of a quantum system is expressed, in the replica method, through analytic continuation with respect to n of the trace of the n-th power of the reduced density matrix $\trρ_A^n$. We study the analytic properties of this quantity as a function of n in some quantum critical Ising-like models in 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions. Although we find no true singularities for n>0, there is a threshold value of n close to 2 which separates two very different `phases'. The region with larger n is characterized by rapidly convergent Taylor expansions and is very smooth. The region with smaller n has a very rich and varied structure in the complex n plane and is characterized by Taylor coefficients which instead of being monotone decreasing, have a maximum growing with the size of the subsystem. Finite truncations of the Taylor expansion in this region lead to increasingly poor approximations of $\trρ_A^n$. The computation of the entanglement entropy from the knowledge of $\trρ^n_A$ for positive integer n becomes extremely difficult particularly in spatial dimensions larger than one, where one cannot use conformal field theory as a guidance in the extrapolations to n=1.

On the ratio of string tensions in the 3D Z_4 lattice gauge theory

It was recently pointed out that simple scaling properties of Polyakov correlation functions of gauge systems in the confining phase suggest that the ratios of k-string tensions in the low temperature region is constant up to terms of order T^3. Here we argue that, at least in a three-dimensional Z_4 gauge model, the above ratios are constant in the whole confining phase. This result is obtained by combining numerical experiments with known exact results on the mass spectrum of an integrable two-dimensional spin model describing the infrared behaviour of the gauge system near the deconfining transition.

Confining vacua and Q-state Potts models with Q<1

In most Yang-Mills models the vacuum where magnetic monopoles condense coincides with that where center vortices percolate, thus it is not clear which of these two properties is most directly involved in producing confinement. It is pointed out that there is a class of 3D gauge models, which can be though of as duals of Q-state Potts models with Q < 1, where the magnetic monopole condensation is a necessary but not sufficient condition for percolation of center vortices. A set of numerical tests at Q=1/10 shows that there is a vacuum in which the magnetic monopole condensate does not yield confinement, in the sense that large Wilson loops obey a perimeter law. In such a vacuum the center vortices form a dilute gas of loops. At stronger coupling there is also a truly confining vacuum where both confining mechanisms are present.

The Stefan-Boltzmann law in a small box and the pressure deficit in hot SU(N) lattice gauge theory

The blackbody radiation in a box L^3 with periodic boundary conditions in thermal equilibrium at a temperature T is affected by finite-size effects. These bring about modifications of the thermodynamic functions which can be expressed in a closed form in terms of the dimensionless parameter LT. For instance, when LT~4 - corresponding to the value where the most reliable SU(N) gauge lattice simulations have been performed above the deconfining temperature T_c - the deviation of the free energy density from its thermodynamic limit is about 5%. This may account for almost half of the pressure deficit observed in lattice simulations at T~ 4 T_c.

The functional form of open Wilson lines in gauge theories coupled to matter

The open Wilson lines are gauge-invariant operators made with a gauge transporter along an open path saturated at the end-points with matter fields. Here it is shown that numerical experiments on 3D Z2 Higgs model provide useful guidance in addressing the problem of the functional form of their vacuum expectation values. It turns out they satisfy, as long as their size does not exceed the string breaking scale, a remarkable factorization, related to finite-size scaling of the Fredenhagen-Marcu order parameter. This leads to conjecture a decay area law, like ordinary Wilson loops, with the difference that the boundary conditions of the confining string world-sheet are fixed along the path of the gauge transporter whereas are free on the straight line joining the two end-points. A consistency condition fixes uniquely the contribution of the free boundary, which turns out to be proportional to the string-breaking scale. Universal shape effects produced by quantum string fluctuations are also studied.

Screening of sources in higher representations of SU(N) gauge theories at zero and finite temperature

Completion of the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture in some (2+1) dimensional SU(N) gauge theories allows mapping Polyakov loops in higher representations of the gauge group into suitable conformal operators of the corresponding 2D CFT. As a consequence, the critical exponents of the correlators of these Polyakov loops are determined. The functional form of these correlators suggests a general Ansatz to describe the large-distance screening of higher-representation sources at zero temperature in any space-time dimension. A generalised Wilson loop in which along part of its trajectory a source is converted in a gauge invariant way into higher representations with same N-ality could be used to estimate the decay scale of the unstable strings

Random percolation as a gauge theory

Three-dimensional bond or site percolation theory on a lattice can be interpreted as a gauge theory in which the Wilson loops are viewed as counters of topological linking with random clusters. Beyond the percolation threshold large Wilson loops decay with an area law and show the universal shape effects due to flux tube quantum fluctuations like in ordinary confining gauge theories. Wilson loop correlators define a non-trivial spectrum of physical states of increasing mass and spin, like the glueballs of ordinary gauge theory. The crumbling of the percolating cluster when the length of one periodic direction decreases below a critical threshold accounts for the finite temperature deconfinement, which belongs to 2-D percolation universality class.

Overlap of the Wilson loop with the broken-string state

Numerical experiments on most gauge theories coupled with matter failed to observe string-breaking effects while measuring Wilson loops only. We show that, under rather mild assumptions, the overlap of the Wilson loop operator with the broken-string state obeys a natural upper bound implying that the signal of string-breaking is in general too weak to be detected by the conventional updating algorithms. In order to reduce the variance of the Wilson loops in 3-D Z_2 gauge Higgs model we use a new algorithm based on the Lüscher-Weisz method combined with a non-local cluster algorithm which allows to follow the decay of rectangular Wilson loops up to values of the order of 10^{-24}. In this way a sharp signal of string breaking is found.
