Recoil-Order and Radiative Corrections to the aCORN Experiment

The aCORN experiment measures the electron-antineutrino $a$-coefficient in free neutron decay. We update the previous aCORN results to include radiative and recoil corrections to first order, and discuss a key issue in the comparison of results from different $a$-coefficient experimental methods when these effects are considered. The corrected combined result is $\overline{a} = -0.10779 \pm 0.00125\, ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.00133\, ({\rm sys})$, averaged over the full Fermi neutron beta spectrum. The corresponding corrected result for the ratio of weak coupling constants $\lambda = G_A/G_V$ is $\lambda = -1.2712 \pm 0.0061$. This improves agreement with previous $a$-coefficient experiments, in particular the 2020 aSPECT result

The Nab Experiment: A Precision Measurement of Unpolarized Neutron Beta Decay

Neutron beta decay is one of the most fundamental processes in nuclear physics and provides sensitive means to uncover the details of the weak interaction. Neutron beta decay can evaluate the ratio of axial-vector to vector coupling constants in the standard model, $λ= g_A / g_V$, through multiple decay correlations. The Nab experiment will carry out measurements of the electron-neutrino correlation parameter $a$ with a precision of $δa / a = 10^{-3}$ and the Fierz interference term $b$ to $δb = 3\times10^{-3}$ in unpolarized free neutron beta decay. These results, along with a more precise measurement of the neutron lifetime, aim to deliver an independent determination of the ratio $λ$ with a precision of $δλ/ λ= 0.03\%$ that will allow an evaluation of $V_{ud}$ and sensitively test CKM unitarity, independent of nuclear models. Nab utilizes a novel, long asymmetric spectrometer that guides the decay electron and proton to two large area silicon detectors in order to precisely determine the electron energy and an estimation of the proton momentum from the proton time of flight. The Nab spectrometer is being commissioned at the Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Lab. We present an overview of the Nab experiment and recent updates on the spectrometer, analysis, and systematic effects.

Solving for Micro- and Macro- Scale Electrostatic Configurations Using the Robin Hood Algorithm

We present a novel technique by which highly-segmented electrostatic configurations can be solved. The Robin Hood method is a matrix-inversion algorithm optimized for solving high density boundary element method (BEM) problems. We illustrate the capabilities of this solver by studying two distinct geometry scales: (a) the electrostatic potential of a large volume beta-detector and (b) the field enhancement present at surface of electrode nano-structures. Geometries with elements numbering in the O(10^5) are easily modeled and solved without loss of accuracy. The technique has recently been expanded so as to include dielectrics and magnetic materials.
