The GRB-SN connection: GRB030329 and XRF030723

The attempt to secure conclusive, spectroscopic evidence for the GRB/SN connection has been a central theme in most GRB observing time proposals since the discovery of the very unusual GRB980425 associated with the peculiar type Ib/c SN1998bw. GRB030329 provided this evidence to everybody's satisfaction. In this contribution we show the results of a spectroscopic campaign of the supernova associated with GRB030329 carried out at ESOs Very Large Telescope. We also present preliminary results from a photometric and spectroscopic campaign targeting the X-ray Flash of July 23.

Empirically Constrained Color-Temperature Relations. II. uvby

(Abriged) A new grid of theoretical color indices for the Stromgren uvby photometric system has been derived from MARCS model atmospheres and SSG synthetic spectra for cool dwarf and giant stars. At warmer temperatures this grid has been supplemented with the synthetic uvby colors from recent Kurucz atmospheric models without overshooting. Our transformations appear to reproduce the observed colors of extremely metal-poor turnoff and giant stars (i.e., [Fe/H]<-2). Due to a number of assumptions made in the synthetic color calculations, however, our color-temperature relations for cool stars fail to provide a suitable match to the uvby photometry of both cluster and field stars having [Fe/H]>-2. To overcome this problem, the theoretical indices at intermediate and high metallicities have been corrected using a set of color calibrations based on field stars having accurate IRFM temperature estimates and spectroscopic [Fe/H] values. Encouragingly, isochrones that employ the transformations derived in this study are able to reproduce the observed CMDs (involving u-v, v-b, and b-y colors) for a number of open and globular clusters (including M92, M67, the Hyades, and 47Tuc) rather well. Moreover, our interpretations of such data are very similar, if not identical, with those given by VandenBerg & Clem (2003, AJ, 126, 778) from a consideration of BV(RI)c observations for the same clusters. In the present investigation, we have also analyzed the observed Stromgren photometry for the classic Population II subdwarfs, compared our "final" (b-y)-Teff relationship with those derived empirically in a number of recent studies, and examined in some detail the dependence of the m1 index on [Fe/H].

Heavy elements abundances in turn-off stars and early subgiants in NGC 6752

High resolution spectra (R > 40 000) for 9 main sequence turn-off stars and 9 subgiants in the globular cluster NGC 6752 were acquired with UVES on the VLT-Kueyen (UT2). These data have been used to determine the abundances of some heavy elements (strontium, yttrium, barium and europium). This paper presents for the first time accurate results for heavy elements in this globular cluster. We did not find any systematic effect between the abundances found in turn-off stars, subgiants, and giants. We obtain the following mean abundances for these elements in our sample (turn-off stars and subgiants): [Sr/Fe] = 0.06 +/- 0.16, [Y/Fe] = -0.01 +/- 0.12, [Ba/Fe] = 0.18 +/- 0.11, and [Eu/Fe] = 0.41 +/- 0.09. The dispersion in the abundance ratios of the different elements is low and can be totally explained by uncertainties in their derivation. These ratios are in agreement with the values found in field halo stars with the same metallicity. We did not observe any correlation between the [n-capture/Fe] ratios and the star-to-star variations of the O and Na abundances. The [Ba/Eu] and [Sr/Ba] ratios show clearly that this globular cluster has also been uniformly enriched by r- and s-process synthesis.

A Search for Planets in the Old Open Cluster NGC 6791

We describe the results of a search for transit-like events caused by giant planets occulting stars in the old, metal-rich open cluster NGC 6791 based on BVI-colour photometry from eight nights of observations with the 2.54m Nordic Optical Telescope. To extract the light curves we have used both PSF photometry (DAOPHOT) and the difference imaging technique (ISIS). We have re-analyzed observations from earlier campaigns to search for multiple transits, determine periods of long-period variables, and detect eclipsing binaries. We confirm 20 known variables and have discovered 22 new low-amplitude variables with amplitudes in the range 7--40 mmag and periods 1--16 days. We have found the primary and secondary eclipses of two eclipsing binaries based on the new and older photometric campaigns. The search for transits-like events has turned up a few single-transit candidates. The transit depths are 10 mmag in both the V and I filters over periods of 1.0--2.5 hours, but future observations are required to see whether identical transit-like events recur in these same stars.

Confirmation of solar-like oscillations in eta Bootis

We obtained time-series spectroscopy of the G0 subgiant eta Boo in an attempt to confirm the solar-like oscillations reported by Kjeldsen et al. (1995). We recorded 1843 spectra over six consecutive nights with the Nordic Optical Telescope, which we used to measure equivalent widths of strong temperature-sensitive lines. We also measured velocities from 1989 spectra obtained through an iodine reference cell at Lick Observatory over 56 nights that were badly affected by weather. Our analysis also included velocity measurements published by Brown et al. (1997) and the original equivalent-width measurements by Kjeldsen et al. (1995). All four data sets show power excesses consistent with oscillations, although with a range of amplitudes that presumably reflects the stochastic nature of the excitation. The highest peaks show regularity with a large separation of Delta nu = 40.4 microHz and we identify 21 oscillation frequencies from the combined data.

Hot HB stars in globular clusters - Physical parameters and consequences for theory. VI. The second parameter pair M 3 and M 13

We present the results of spectroscopic analyses of hot horizontal branch (HB) stars in M 13 and M 3, which form a famous ``second parameter'' pair. From the spectra and Stroemgren photometry we derived -- for the first time in M 13 -- atmospheric parameters (effective temperature and surface gravity). For stars with Stroemgren temperatures between 10,000 and 12,000 K we found excellent agreement between the atmospheric parameters derived from Stroemgren photometry and those derived from Balmer line profile fits. However, for cooler stars there is a disagreement in the parameters derived by the two methods, for which we have no satisfactory explanation. Stars hotter than 12,000 K show evidence for helium depletion and iron enrichment, both in M 3 and M 13. Accounting for the iron enrichment substantially improves the agreement with canonical evolutionary models, although the derived gravities and masses are still somewhat too low. This remaining discrepancy may be an indication that scaled-solar metal-rich model atmospheres do not adequately represent the highly non-solar abundance ratios found in blue HB stars affected by diffusion. We discuss the effects of an enhancement in the envelope helium abundance on the atmospheric parameters of the blue HB stars, as might be caused by deep mixing on the red giant branch or primordial pollution from an earlier generation of intermediate mass asymptotic giant branch stars.

The lithium content of the globular cluster NGC 6397

We make use of high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of 12 turn-off stars in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6397 to measure its lithium content. We conclude that they all have the same lithium abundance A(Li) = 2.34 with a standard deviation of 0.056 dex. We use this result, together with Monte Carlo simulations, to estimate that the maximum allowed intrinsic scatter is of the order of 0.035 dex. This is a new stringent constraint to be fulfilled by stellar models which predict Li depletion. We argue that although a mild depletion of 0.1 -- 0.2 dex, as predicted by recent models, cannot be ruled out, there is no compelling reason for it. This fact, together with the good agreement with the Li abundance observed in field stars, supports the primordial origin of lithium in metal-poor stars. Taking the above value as the primordial lithium abundance implies a cosmic baryonic density which is either Omega_b h^2 = 0.016 +/- 0.004 or Omega_b h^2 = 0.005 ^{+0.0026}_{-0.0006}, from the predictions of standard big bang nucleosynthesis. The high baryonic density solution is in agreement with recent results on the primordial abundance of deuterium and 3He and on the estimates derived from the fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background.

Confirmation of Solar-Like Oscillations in eta Bootis

We report observations of the G0 subgiant eta Boo made in 1998, in Balmer-line equivalent width with the 2.5-m Nordic Optical Telescope and in velocity with the 24-inch Lick CAT. In both data sets we see an excess in the power spectrum, with oscillation frequencies that confirm the earlier observations by Kjeldsen et al. (1995).

Str{ö}mgren Color-Temperature Relations for Cool Stars

A new extensive grid of synthetic Str{ö}mgren colors and bolometric corrections is presented for F-M type dwarf and giant stars having 3000K $\leq$ T$_{\rm{eff}}$ $\leq$ 8000K, 0.0 $\leq$ log $g$ $\leq$ 5.0, and -3.0 $\leq$ [Fe/H] $\leq$ 0.5. These purely theoretical colors are placed on the observational system using color calibrations derived from $uvby$ photometry of nearby field stars having $Hipparcos$ parallaxes and effective temperatures determined by the infrared flux method. Modern isochrones transformed to the observed plane using the resultant color-temperature relations are able to reproduce the $uvby$ color-magnitude diagrams of several open and globular clusters (notably M 67, M 92, and 47 Tuc) quite satisfactorily.

The O-Na and Mg-Al Anticorrelations in Turn-Off and early Subgiants in Globular Clusters

High dispersion spectra (R>40,000) for a quite large number of stars at the main sequence turn-off and at the base of the subgiant branch in NGC6397 and NGC6752 were obtained with the UVES on Kueyen (VLT UT2). The [Fe/H] values we found are -2.03+/-0.02+/-0.04 and -1.42+/-0.02+/-0.04 for NGC6397 and NGC6752 respectively, where the first error bars refer to internal errors and the second ones to systematic errors. In both clusters the [Fe/H] obtained for TO-stars agree perfectly (within a few per cents) with that obtained for stars at the base of the RGB. The [O/Fe]=0.21+/-0.05 value we obtain for NGC6397 is quite low, but it agrees with previous results obtained for giants in this cluster; also, the star-to-star scatter in both O and Fe is very small, indicating that this small mass cluster is chemically very homogenous. On the other side, our results show clearly and for the first time that the O-Na anticorrelation (up to now seen only for stars on the red giant branches of globular clusters) is present among unevolved stars in the globular cluster NGC6752, a more massive cluster than NGC6397. A similar anticorrelation is present also for Mg and Al, and C and N. It is very difficult to explain the observed Na-O, and Mg-Al anticorrelation in NGC6752 stars by a deep mixing scenario; we think it requires some non internal mechanism.

Exploring Star Clusters Using Stromgren uvby Photometry

We illustrate the application of high precision Stromgren uvby photometry to open and globular clusters (GCs). It is shown how such data can be used to determine cluster ages, independent of distance and only weakly dependent on reddening. We also illustrate in detail how c1 index variations point to significant star-to-star abundance variations of C and N (through variations in the strength of the 3360AA NH band) on the red giant branches (RGBs) of all metal-poor GCs observed to date as well as on the main sequences of M71 (NGC 6838) and 47 Tuc (NGC 104).

Blue Horizontal--Branch Stars: The "Jump" in Stromgren u, Low Gravities, and Radiative Levitation of Metals

We study the ``jump'' in the blue horizontal--branch (BHB) distribution first detected by Grundahl et al. (1998) in the Galactic globular cluster (GC) M13. On the basis of Stromgren photometry for a sample of fourteen GC's we show that: 1) The jump is best characterized as a systematic shift, on a (u, u-y) color-magnitude diagram, from canonical zero-age HB (ZAHB) models, in the sense that the stars appear brighter and/or hotter than the models; 2) the jump is a ubiquitous phenomenon, ocurring over the temperature range 11,500 < Teff < 20,000K; 3) An analogous feature is present in (log g, log Teff) diagrams -- indicating a common physical origin for the two phenomena; 4) The physical mechanism responsible for the jump phenomenon is most likely radiative levitation of iron and other

Hot Horizontal-Branch Stars: The Ubiquitous Nature of the "Jump" in Stromgren u, Low Gravities, and the Role of Radiative Levitation of Metals

A "jump" in the BHB distribution in the V, u-y CMD was recently detected in the GC M13. It is morphologically best characterized as a discontinuity in u, u-y, with stars in the range 11,500 11,500 K, dramatically enhancing their abundances in the atmospheres of BHB stars in the "critical" temperature region. Model atmospheres taking diffusion effects into account are badly needed, and will likely lead to better overall agreement between canonical evolutionary theory and observations for BHB stars.

Discovery of a faint optical jet in 3C 120

We report the detection of an optical jet in the nearby Seyfert 1 radio galaxy 3C 120. The optical jet coincides with the well-known radio jet and emits continuum radiation (B,V',I) with a radio-to-optical spectral index of 0.65. There are no clear optical counterparts to the radio knots, although the optical condensation A of the galaxy, which includes the bright 4" radio knot, is found to be 12 % polarized with the electric field vectors perpendicular to the jet. These findings indicate that 3C 120 contains the 6th known extragalactic optical synchrotron jet, quite similar in its properties to the jet of PKS 0521-36. The outer parts of the jet is the faintest known optical jet and was discovered as the result of a dedicated effort to detect it. It is therefore possible that more optical jets can be discovered in systematic searches by combining deep imaging in the optical or near-IR with careful galaxy subtraction methods.

Optical appearance of the gravitational lens system B0218+35.7

We present high-resolution CCD images (FWHM=0.6"-0.7") of the compact gravitational lens system B0218+35.7 obtained at the Nordic Optical Telescope. Using aperture and PSF photometry we detect the two closely separated (335 mas) components A and B as well as the lensing galaxy. In the optical B seems to be very much brighter than A, opposite to the radio morphology. This suggests that most of the light from A is absorbed in the lensing galaxy, possibly by a giant molecular cloud located in the line-of-sight to component A. The lensing galaxy appears to be a late-type galaxy at a small inclination. For future variability studies we present calibrated photometry of the system and its immediate surroundings, even though the relative faintness of A will make it difficult to obtain an optical time delay even with the Hubble Space Telescope.
