Renormalization Group Approach to the Normal State of Copper-Oxide Superconductors

We study by means of renormalization group techniques the effect that on the two-dimensional electron liquid may have the van Hove singularities observed experimentally in the copper-oxide superconductors. We find significant deviations from Fermi liquid behavior, that lead to the appearance of an unstable fixed point in the renormalization group flow of the effective coupling constant. Besides the attenuation of electron quasiparticles already known on phenomenological grounds, our approach is able to explain the reduction in the dispersion of the band as well as the pinning of the Fermi level near the singularity, as observed in the photoemission experiments.

Phase diagram of quantum dissipative junctions

Mesoscopic capacitances, in the quantum regime, are described as a quantum rotor coupled to a dissipative bath. We analyze the phase diagram of this model, as function of the capacitance, the coupling to the bath (that is, the conductance of the device), and the decay of the correlation functions in the bath, i.\ e., the strength of the many body effects within the leads. By combining Monte-Carlo and analytical techniques, we present the full phase diagram. The similarities and differences with other models of quantum junctions are discussed.

Non linear dynamics of vortices in superconductors with short coherence length

In superconductors where the coherence length is comparable to the Fermi wavelength, the vortex viscosity depends on the velocity of the vortex, leading to non linear equations of motion. The trajectories of vortices driven by a. c. fields show a variety of behaviors as function of frequency. Finite pertubations give rise to very long lived transients. The relevance of these results to experiments in high-T$_{\rm c}$ superconductors is discussed.

Momentum dependence of the spin and charge excitations in the two dimensional Hubbard model

The low energy spin and charge excitations in the 2D Hubbard model near half filling are analyzed. The RPA spectra derived from inhomoheneous mean field textures are analyzed. Spin excitations show a commensurate peak at half filling, incommensurate peaks near half filling, and a broad background typical of a dilute Fermi liquid away from half filling. Charge excitations, near half filling, are localized near (0,0), and they occupy a small portion of the Brillouin Zone, in a way consistent with the existence of a small density of carriers, and a small Fermi surface. At higher hole densities, they fill the entire BZ, and can be understood in terms of a conventional Fermi liquid picture. The results are consistent with the observed features of the high-T$_c$ superconductors.

Renormalization group analysis of electrons near a Van Hove singularity.

A model of interacting two dimensional electrons near a Van Hove singularity is studied, using renormalization group techniques. In hole doped systems, the chemical potential is found to be pinned near the singularity, when the electron-electron interactions are repulsive. The RG treatment of the leading divergences appearing in perturbation theory give rise to marginal behavior and anisotropic superconductivity.

Asymptotic tunneling conductance in Luttinger liquids

Conductance through weak constrictions in Luttinger liquids is shown to vanish with frequency $ω$ as $c_1 ω^2 + c_2 ω^{2/g - 2}$, where $g$ is a dimensionless parameter characterizing the Luttinger liquid phase, and $c_1$ and $c_2$ are nonuniversal constants. The first term arises from the ^^ Coulomb blockade' effect and dominates for $g < 1/2$, whereas the second results from eliminating high-energy modes and dominates for $g > 1/2$.

Shake-up effects and intermolecular tunneling in C$_{60}$ ions

The multiplet structure induced by the Coulomb interactions in C$_{60}^{n-}$ ($n = 1 - 12$) is analyzed. The partially ocuppied LUMO gives rise to a set of levels which fill a relatively wide band ( $\approx 2-3$ eV ). A large ($\sim 1$ eV) intramolecular effective repulsion is found. The anions are also shown to be highly polarizable. The optical absorption and photoemission spectra are calculated. The probability of exciting the molecule upon the addition or removal of one electron is shown to be significant, and this effect may give rise to the insulating behavior of K$_4$C$_{60}$. The role of intermolecular interactions in suppressing the net repulsion within the C$_{60}$ molecules is discussed.

The wavefunction renormalization constant for the one- and two- band Hubbard hamiltonians in two dimensions

The wavefunction renormalization in the Hubbard model is studied, by using well tested mean field tecniques. The 'orthogonality catastrophe' is shown to exist, even in 2D, for doping levels sufficiently close to half filling. The results are extended beyond mean field, by constructing delocalized wavefunctions, with the correct symmetries of the exact solutions. The physics are still well described by the assumption of the existence of the orthogonality catastrophe.

Hartree Fock and RPA studies of the Hubbard model

The applicability of the Hartree-Fock and random phase approximations to models of strongly correlated electrons is discussed. The 2D Hubbard model is analyzed. An antiferromagnetic phase (at half filling) and Fermi liquid behavior (at low electron densities) are found. In addition, the system shows an unconventional regime near half filling. It is characterized by the formation of spin and charge textures. Local magnetic moments and spin waves are also present, and the quasiparticle pole at the Fermi energy vanishes. The charge excitation spectrum is gapless. The overall features resemble those of the 1D Luttinger liquid.

Electronic interactions in fullerene molecules

We study the Coulomb interactions in fullerene molecules within a continuum formalism. The model gives rise to a renormalizable field theory, which has many similarities to standard quantum electrodynamics. The effective electric charge at low energies is reduced by screening processes. The associated renormalization of the one electron Green's function leads to the vanishing of the quasiparticle pole. It implies the dissappearance of coherent one particle excitations, in close analogy to the one dimensional Luttinger liquid. The relevance of these results for C$_{60}$ and related molecules is discussed.

Non-Fermi liquid behaviour of electrons in the half-filled honeycomb lattice (A renormalization group approach)

A system of electrons in the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice with Coulomb interactions is described by a renormalizable quantum field theory similar but not equal to QED_3. Renormalization group techniques are used to investigate the infrared behaviour of the system that flows to a fixed point with non-Fermi liquid characteristics. There are anomalous dimensions in the fermionic observables, no quasiparticle pole, and anomalous screening of the Coulomb interaction. These results are robust as the Fermi level is not changed by the interaction. The system resembles in the infrared the one-dimensional Luttinger liquid.

Flux flow dissipation in superconductors with short coherence length

In superconductors where the coherence length is comparable to the Fermi wavelength, the electronic levels within a vortex core are quantized, and separated by energies of the order of the superconducting gap. The absence of a continuum modifies significantly the energy dissipation due to the motion of vortices. At zero temperature, dissipation is suppressed, and the system shows non ohmic behavior. The I-V characteristics show two distinct regimes. Below a given electric field, I is strongly dependent on V. Flux flow resistivity also shows a marked dependence on temperature, and reaches conventional values near $T_c$.

Electrostatic screening in fullerene molecules

The screening properties of fullerene molecules are described by means of a continuum model which uses the electronic wavefunctions of planar graphite as a starting point. The long distance behavior of the system gives rise to a renormalizable theory, which flows towards a non trivial fixed point. Its existence implies an anomalous dielectric constant. The screening properties are neither metallic nor insulating. Alternatively, the intramolecular screening is obtained from a simple approximation to the electronic wavefunctions. Intermolecular effects are also calculated. As a consistency check, it is shown that the observed polarizability of C$_{60}$ is well eproduced.

Electronic interactions in fullerene spheres

The electron-phonon and Coulomb interactions inC$_{60}$, and larger fullerene spheres are analyzed. The coupling between electrons and intramolecular vibrations give corrections $\sim 1 - 10$ meV to the electronic energies for C$_{60}$, and scales as $R^{-4}$ in larger molecules. The energies associated with electrostatic interactions are of order $\sim 1 - 4$ eV, in C$_{60}$ and scale as $R^{-1}$. Charged fullerenes show enhanced electron-phonon coupling, $\sim 10$ meV, which scales as $R^{-2}$. Finally, it is argued that non only C$_{60}^{-}$, but also C$_{60}^{--}$ are highly polarizable molecules. The polarizabilities scale as $R^3$ and $R^4$, respectively. The role of this large polarizability in mediating intermolecular interactions is also discussed.

The Electronic Spectrum of Fullerenes from the Dirac Equation

The electronic spectrum of sheets of graphite (plane honeycomb lattice) folded into regular polihedra is studied. A continuum limit valid for sufficiently large molecules and based on a tight binding approximation is derived. It is found that a Dirac equation describes the flat graphite lattice. Curving the lattice by insertion of odd numbered rings can be mimicked by coupling effective gauge fields. In particular the $C_{60}$ and related molecules are well described by the Dirac equation on the surface of a sphere coupled to a color monopole sitting at its center.

Complexity and criticality in Laplacian growth models

We analyze the dynamical evolution of systems which obey simple growth laws, like diffusion limited aggregation or dielectric breakdown. We show that, if the developing patterns is sufficiently complex, a scale invariant noise spectrum is generated, in agreement with the hypothesis that the system is in a self organized critical state. The intrinsic noise generated in the evolution is shown to be independent of the (extrinsic) stochastic aspects of the growth. Instead, it is related to the complexity of the generated pattern.

Low voltage conductance of small tunnel junctions

A discrete charge transfer in a small tunnel junction where Coulomb interactions are important can excite electron-hole pairs near the Fermi level. We use a simple model to study the associated nonequilibrium properties and found two novel effects: (i) for junctions with electrodes of the same electronic properties, a leakage current exists within the Coulomb gap even when the environmental impedance is infinite; (ii) for junctions with electrodes of different electronic properties, the differential conductance diverges when a net interaction between conduction electrons is attractive, and it is strongly suppressed for a net repulsive interaction.
