Study of light scalar mesons through $D_s^+ \to π^0 π^0 e^+ ν_e$ and $K_S^0 K_S^0 e^+ ν_e$ decays

Using 6.32~fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data recorded by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between $4.178$ to $4.226$ GeV, we present the first measurement of the decay $D_s^+\to f_0(980)e^+ν_e,\,f_0(980)\to π^0π^0$. The product branching fraction of $D_s^+\to f_0(980)e^+ν_e,\,f_0(980)\to π^0π^0$ is measured to be $(7.9\pm1.4_{\rm stat} \pm0.3_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-4}$, with a statistical significance of $7.8σ$. Furthermore, the upper limits on the product branching fractions of $D_s^+\to f_0(500)e^+ν_e$ with $f_0(500)\to π^0π^0$ and the branching fraction of $D_s^+\to K_{S}^{0}K_{S}^{0}e^+ν_e$ are set to be $7.3\times 10^{-4}$ and $3.8\times 10^{-4}$ at 90\% confidence level, respectively. Our results provide valuable inputs to the understanding of the structures of light scalar mesons.

Observation of the doubly Cabibbo-Suppressed decays $D^+\to K^+π^0π^0$ and $D^+\to K^+π^0η$

By analyzing $e^+e^-$ annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2.93\,\rm fb^{-1}$ collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773\,GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the first observations of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $D^+\to K^+π^0π^0$ and $D^+\to K^+π^0η$. The branching fractions of $D^+\to K^+π^0π^0$ and $D^+\to K^+π^0η$ are measured to be $(2.1 \pm 0.4_{\rm stat} \pm 0.1_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-4}$ and $(2.1 \pm 0.5_{\rm stat} \pm 0.1_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-4}$ with statistical significances of 8.8$σ$ and 5.5$σ$, respectively. In addition, we search for the subprocesses $D^+\to K^{*}(892)^{+}π^0$ and $D^+\to K^{*}(892)^{+}η$ with $K^{*}(892)^+\to K^+π^0$. The branching fraction of $D^+\to K^{*}(892)^{+}η$ is determined to be $({4.4^{+1.8}_{-1.5}}_{\rm stat}\pm0.2_{\rm syst})\times10^{-4}$, with a statistical significance of 3.2$σ$. No significant signal for $D^+\to K^{*}(892)^{+}π^0$ is found and we set an upper limit on the branching fraction of this decay at the 90\% confidence level to be $5.4\times10^{-4}$.

Search for the decay $D^{0} \to π^{0} ν\barν$

We present the first experimental search for the rare charm decay $D^{0} \to π^{0} ν\barν$. It is based on an $e^+e^-$ collision sample consisting of $10.6\times10^{6}$ pairs of $D^0\bar{D}^0$ mesons collected by the BESIII detector at $\sqrt{s}$=3.773 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93~fb$^{-1}$. A data-driven method is used to ensure the reliability of the background modeling. No significant $D^{0} \to π^{0} ν\barν$ signal is observed in data and an upper limit of the branching fraction is set to be $2.1\times 10^{-4}$ at the 90$\%$ confidence level. This is the first experimental constraint on charmed-hadron decays into dineutrino final states.

Search for invisible decays of the $Λ$ baryon

A search for invisible decays of the $Λ$ baryon is carried out in the process $J/ψ\toΛ\barΛ$ based on $(1.0087\pm0.0044)\times10^{10}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector located at the BEPCII storage ring. No signals are found for the invisible decays of $Λ$ baryon, and the upper limit of the branching fraction is determined to be $7.4 \times 10^{-5}$ at the 90% confidence level. This is the first search for invisible decays of baryons; such searches will play an important role in constraining dark sector models related to the baryon asymmetry.

Measurement of the Born cross sections for $e^+e^- \to η^\prime π^{+}π^{-}$ at center-of-mass energies between $2.00$ and $3.08$ GeV

The Born cross sections for the process $e^+e^- \to η^\prime π^{+}π^{-}$ at different center-of-mass energies between $2.00$ and $3.08$ GeV are reported with improved precision from an analysis of data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. An obvious structure is observed in the Born cross section line shape. Fit as a Breit-Wigner resonance, it has a statistical significance of $6.3σ$ and a mass and width of $M=(2111\pm43\pm25)$~MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ=(135\pm34\pm30)$~MeV, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These measured resonance parameters agree with the measurements of BABAR in $e^+e^- \to η^\prime π^{+}π^{-}$ and BESIII in $e^+e^- \to ωπ^0$ within two standard deviations.

Study of the decay $D_s^+\to K_S^0K_S^0π^+$ and observation an isovector partner to $f_0(1710)$

Using $e^+e^-$ annihilation data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 6.32 $\rm fb^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we perform an amplitude analysis of the decay $D_{s}^{+} \to K_{S}^{0}K_{S}^{0}π^{+}$ for the first time. An enhancement is observed in the $K_{S}^{0}K_{S}^{0}$ mass spectrum near 1.7 GeV/$c^2$, which was not seen in $D_{s}^{+} \to K^+K^-π^{+}$ in an earlier work, implying the existence of an isospin one partner of the $f_0(1710)$. The branching fraction of the decay $D_{s}^{+}\to K_{S}^{0}K_{S}^{0}π^{+}$ is determined to be $\mathcal{B}(D_{s}^{+} \to K_{S}^{0}K_{S}^{0}π^{+})=(0.68\pm0.04_{\rm stat}\pm0.01_{\rm syst})\%$.

Measurement of Branching Fractions of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays to $Σ^{+}$ and $\overlineΣ^-$

Using $1310.6\times10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ and $448.1\times10^{6}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the branching fractions of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays to $Σ^{+}\overlineΣ^{-}$ are measured to be $(10.61 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.36) \times 10^{-4}$ and $(2.52 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.09) \times 10^{-4}$, respectively. In addition, the ratio of $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686) \rightarrow Σ^{+}\overlineΣ^{-})/\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\rightarrow Σ^{+}\overlineΣ^{-})$ is determined to be $(23.8 \pm 1.1)\%$ which violates the "$12\%$ rule".

Measurement of the $e^{+}e^{-}\toΣ^{0}\barΣ^{0}$ cross sections at center-of-mass energies from $2.3864$ to $3.0200$ GeV

The Born cross sections of $e^{+}e^{-}\to Σ^{0}\barΣ^{0}$ are measured at center-of-mass energies from $2.3864$ to $3.0200$ GeV using data samples with an integrated luminosity of $328.5$ pb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The analysis makes use of a novel reconstruction method for energies near production threshold, while a single-tag method is employed at other center-of-mass energies. The measured cross sections are consistent with earlier results from BaBar, with a substantially improved precision. The cross-section lineshape can be well described by a perturbative QCD-driven energy function. In addition, the effective form factors of the $Σ^{0}$ baryon are determined. The results provide precise experimental input for testing various theoretical predictions.

Study of the Decay $D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{+}π^{-}η$ and Observation of the W-annihilation Decay $D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow a_0(980)^+ρ^0$

The decay $D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{+}π^{-}η$ is observed for the first time, using $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.32 fb$^{-1}$, collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226 GeV. The absolute branching fraction for this decay is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(D^+_s \to π^+ π^+ π^- η) = (3.12\pm0.13_{\rm stat.}\pm0.09_{\rm syst.})$%. The first amplitude analysis of this decay reveals the sub-structures in $D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{+}π^{-}η$ and determines the relative fractions and the phases among these sub-structures. The dominant intermediate process is $D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow a_1(1260)^+ η, a_1(1260)^+ \rightarrow ρ(770)^0π^+$ with a branching fraction of $(1.73 \pm 0.14_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.08_{\rm syst.})$%. We also observe the W-annihilation process $D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow a_0(980)^+ρ(770)^0$, $a_0(980)^+ \to π^+ η$ with a branching fraction of $(0.21\pm0.08_{\rm stat.}\pm0.05_{\rm syst.})$%, which is larger than the branching fractions of other measured pure W-annihilation decays by one order of magnitude.

The absolute branching fraction of the decay $D_{s}^{+} \to π^{+}π^{0}π^{0}$ is measured to be $(0.50\pm 0.04_{\text{stat}}\pm 0.02_{\text{syst}})\%$. The absolute branching fraction of the intermediate process $D_{s}^{+} \to f_0(980)π^{+}, f_0(980)\toπ^{0}π^{0}$ is determined to be $(0.21\pm 0.03_{\text{stat}}\pm 0.03_{\text{syst}})\%$.

PANDA Phase One

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $\overline{\rm P}$ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton-nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the \textit{Phase One} setup. The physics programme that is achievable during Phase One is outlined in this paper.

Study of $e^+e^- \to 2(p\bar{p})$ at center-of-mass energies between 4.0 and 4.6 GeV

Using data taken at 23 center-of-mass energies between 4.0 and 4.6 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider and with a total integrated luminosity of approximately $15$ fb$^{-1}$, the process $e^+e^-\to 2(p \bar{p})$ is studied for the first time. The Born cross sections for $e^+e^-\to 2(p \bar{p})$ are measured, and no significant structure is observed in the lineshape. The baryon pair ($pp$ and $\bar{p}\bar{p}$) invariant mass spectra are consistent with phase space, therefore no hexaquark or di-baryon state is found.

Observation of a near-threshold structure in the $K^+$ recoil-mass spectra in $e^+e^-\to K^+ (D_s^- D^{*0} + D^{*-}_s D^0)$

We report a study of the processes of $e^+e^-\to K^+ (D_s^- D^{*0} + D^{*-}_s D^0)$ based on $e^+e^-$ annihilation samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at BEPCII at five center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.628 to 4.698 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 3.7 fb$^{-1}$. An excess over the known contributions of the conventional charmed mesons is observed near the $D_s^- D^{*0}$ and $D^{*-}_s D^0$ mass thresholds in the $K^{+}$ recoil-mass spectrum for events collected at $\sqrt{s}=4.681$ GeV. The structure matches a mass-dependent-width Breit-Wigner line shape, whose pole mass and width are determined as $(3982.5^{+1.8}_{-2.6}\pm2.1)$ MeV/$c^2$ and $(12.8^{+5.3}_{-4.4}\pm3.0)$ MeV, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The significance of the resonance hypothesis is estimated to be 5.3 $σ$ over the contributions only from the conventional charmed mesons. This is the first candidate of the charged hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness, decaying into $D_s^- D^{*0}$ and $D^{*-}_s D^0$. However, the properties of the excess need further exploration with more statistics.

Evidence for $Z_{c}^{\pm}$ decays into the $ρ^{\pm} η_{c}$ final state

We study $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions with a $π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}η_{c}$ final state using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=4.226$, $4.258$, $4.358$, $4.416$, and $4.600$ GeV. Evidence for the decay $\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac$ is reported with a statistical significance of $3.9σ$ with various systematic uncertainties taken into account at $\sqrt{s} = 4.226$ GeV, and the Born cross section times branching fraction $σ^{B}(\EE\to \pimp\zcpm)\times \BR(\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac)$ is measured to be $(48 \pm 11 \pm 11)\,\rm{pb}$. The $\zcpm\to \rhopm\etac$ signal is not significant at the other center-of-mass energies and the corresponding upper limits are determined. In addition, no significant signal is observed in a search for $\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm}\etac$ with the same data samples. The ratios $R_{\zc}=\BR(\zcpm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcpm\to π^{\pm} \jpsi)$ and $R_{\zcp}=\BR(\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcppm\to π^{\pm} \hc)$ are obtained and used to discriminate between different theoretical interpretations of the $\zcpm$ and $\zcppm$.

Cross section measurement of $e^+e^- \to p\bar{p}η$ and $e^+e^- \to p\bar{p}ω$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 GeV and 4.6 GeV

Based on $14.7~\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at 17 different center-of-mass energies between $3.7730~\textrm{GeV}$ and $4.5995~\textrm{GeV}$, Born cross sections of the two processes $e^+e^- \to p\bar{p}η$ and $e^+e^- \to p\bar{p}ω$ are measured for the first time. No indication of resonant production through a vector state $V$ is observed, and upper limits on the Born cross sections of $e^+e^- \to V \to p\bar{p}η$ and $e^+e^- \to V \to p\bar{p}ω$ at the $90\%$ confidence level are calculated for a large parameter space in resonance masses and widths. For the current world average parameters of the $ψ(4230)$ of $m=4.2187~\textrm{GeV}/c^{2}$ and $Γ=44~\textrm{MeV}$, we find upper limits on resonant production of the $p\bar{p}η$ and $p\bar{p}ω$ final states of $7.5~\textrm{pb}$ and $10.4~\textrm{pb}$ at the $90\%$ CL, respectively.

Observation of di-structures in $e^+e^-\rightarrow{J}/ψ{\rm X}$ at center-of-mass energies around 3.773 GeV

We report a measurement of the observed cross sections of the inclusive $J/ψ$ production in $e^+e^-\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}$ based on 3.21 fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated at energies from 3.645 to 3.891 GeV with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider. The energy-dependent lineshape obtained from the measured cross sections cannot be well described by two Breit-Wigner (BW) amplitudes of the expected decays $ψ(3686)\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}$ and $ψ(3770)\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}$. Instead it can be better described with three BW amplitudes of the decays $ψ(3686)\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}$, $R(3760)\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}$ and $R(3790)\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}$ with two distinct structures referred to as $R(3760)$ and $R(3790)$. Under this assumption, we extracted their masses, total widths, and the product of the leptonic width and decay branching fractions to be $M_{R(3760)}= {3761.7\pm 2.2 \pm 1.2}$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γ^{\rm tot}_{R(3760)}= {6.7\pm 11.1 \pm 1.1}$ MeV, $Γ^{ee}_{R(3760)}\mathcal B[R(3760)\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}]=(4.0\pm 4.3\pm 1.2)$ eV, $M_{R(3790)} = {3784.7\pm 5.7 \pm 1.6}$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γ^{\rm tot}_{R(3790)} = {31.6 \pm 11.9 \pm 3.2}$ MeV, $Γ^{ee}_{R(3790)}\mathcal B[R(3790)\rightarrow {J}/ψ{\rm X}]=(18.1\pm 10.3\pm 4.7)$ eV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and second systematic.

Erratum to "Measurement of the $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-$ cross section between 600 and 900 MeV using initial state radiation"

In Phys. Lett. B 753, 629-638 (2016) [arXiv:1507.08188] the BESIII collaboration published a cross section measurement of the process $e^+e^-\to π^+ π^-$ in the energy range between 600 and 900 MeV. In this erratum we report a corrected evaluation of the statistical errors in terms of a fully propagated covariance matrix. The correction also yields a reduced statistical uncertainty for the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, which now reads as $a_μ^{ππ\mathrm{, LO}}(600 - 900\,\mathrm{MeV}) = (368.2 \pm 1.5_{\rm stat} \pm 3.3_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-10}$. The central values of the cross section measurement and of $a_μ^{ππ\mathrm{, LO}}$, as well as the systematic uncertainties remain unchanged.

Precise Measurements of Branching Fractions for $D_s^+$ Meson Decays to Two Pseudoscalar Mesons

We measure the branching fractions for seven $D_{s}^{+}$ two-body decays to pseudo-scalar mesons, by analyzing data collected at $\sqrt{s}=4.178\sim4.226$ GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+η^{\prime})=(2.68\pm0.17\pm0.17\pm0.08)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\toη^{\prime}π^+)=(37.8\pm0.4\pm2.1\pm1.2)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+η)=(1.62\pm0.10\pm0.03\pm0.05)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\toηπ^+)=(17.41\pm0.18\pm0.27\pm0.54)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+K_S^0)=(15.02\pm0.10\pm0.27\pm0.47)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K_S^0π^+)=(1.109\pm0.034\pm0.023\pm0.035)\times10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(D_s^+\to K^+π^0)=(0.748\pm0.049\pm0.018\pm0.023)\times10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, and the third are from external input branching fraction of the normalization mode $D_s^+\to K^+K^-π^+$. Precision of our measurements is significantly improved compared with that of the current world average values.
