Jet correlations from unintegrated parton distributions

Transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions can be introduced gauge-invariantly in QCD from high-energy factorization. We discuss Monte Carlo applications of these distributions to parton showers and jet physics, with a view to the implications for the Monte Carlo description of complex hadronic final states with multiple hard scales at the LHC.

Three-jet DIS final states from kt-dependent parton showers

Experimental measurements of angular correlations in three-jet final states have recently been performed in DIS. Next-to-leading-order QCD results for these observables are affected by large theoretical uncertainties in the kinematic region of the data. We discuss the effects of multiple QCD radiation at higher order using parton-shower methods based on transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions and matrix elements. We present Monte-Carlo results for azimuthal two-jet and three-jet distributions, and discuss the comparison with experimental data.

Recent results on unintegrated parton distributions

We summarize recent results on i) the use of u-pdf's in the Monte-Carlo simulation of hadronic final states at high-energy colliders, and ii) attempts to characterize u-pdf's with precision in terms of nonlocal operator matrix elements.

Rescattering effects and the determination of the gluon density for x << 1

We consider the possible role of rescattering effects in the determination of the gluon density for the LHC from DIS data. We discuss a method that uses results of s-channel calculations to estimate these effects, and comment on potential applications to diffractive and multi-parton interactions.

Endpoint singularities in unintegrated parton distributions

We examine the singular behavior from the endpoint region x -> 1 in parton distributions unintegrated in both longitudinal and transverse momenta. We identify and regularize the singularities by using the subtraction method, and compare this with the cut-off regularization method. The counterterms for the distributions with subtractive regularization are given in coordinate space by compact all-order expressions in terms of eikonal-line operators. We carry out an explicit calculation at one loop for the unintegrated quark distribution. We discuss the relation of the unintegrated parton distributions in subtractive regularization with the ordinary parton distributions.

Parton distribution function for quarks in an s-channel approach

We use an s-channel picture of hard hadronic collisions to investigate the parton distribution function for quarks at small momentum fraction x, which corresponds to very high energy scattering. We study the renormalized quark distribution at one loop in this approach. In the high-energy picture, the quark distribution function is expressed in terms of a Wilson-line correlator that represents the cross section for a color dipole to scatter from the proton. We model this Wilson-line correlator in a saturation model. We relate this representation of the quark distribution function to the corresponding representation of the structure function F_T(x,Q^2) for deeply inelastic scattering.

Power-like corrections and the determination of the gluon distribution

Power-suppressed corrections to parton evolution may affect the theoretical accuracy of current determinations of parton distributions. We study the role of multigluon-exchange terms in the extraction of the gluon distribution for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Working in the high-energy approximation, we analyze multi-gluon contributions in powers of 1/Q^2. We find a moderate, negative correction to the structure function's derivative d F_2 / d \ln Q^2, characterized by a slow fall-off in the region of low to medium Q^2 relevant for determinations of the gluon at small momentum fractions.

Diffractive jet production in lepton-hadron collisions

We study jet final states in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering. We present the QCD factorization formula in terms of diffractive parton distributions and discuss its implementation in NLO Monte Carlo generators. We compute NLO predictions for the diffractive jet cross section. We use this calculational framework to discuss theoretical models of the long-distance behavior.

Q Qbar g contribution to diffractive J/psi electroproduction

We study the diffractive electroproduction of quarkonia from quark-antiquark-gluon states in the photon wave function. We show that these states contribute to the leading-power and leading-logarithm level. We suggest the measurement of J/psi production via inelastic diffraction to study color-transparency and color-opacity effects in the diffractive gluon distribution.

Heavy top limit and double-logarithmic contributions to Higgs production at m_H^2 / s << 1

Next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to Higgs boson hadroproduction have recently been calculated in the heavy top-quark limit m_t -> \infty. The m_t -> \infty limit introduces double-logarithmic corrections in ln x, with x = m_H^2 / s. We identify these corrections order by order in alpha_s. As an application, we derive an analytic expression for the dominant x << 1 part of the NNLO coefficient.

Soft gluons and gauge-invariant subtractions in NLO parton-shower Monte Carlo event generators

We address the problem of decomposing graphs in perturbative QCD into terms associated with particular regions. Motivated by asking how to incorporate next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections in parton-shower algorithms, we require that: (a) The integrand for the hard part is to be integrable even if the corrections are applied to a process that is not infrared and collinear safe. (b) The splitting between the terms should be defined gauge-invariantly. (c) The dependence on cut-offs should obey homogeneous evolution equations. In the context of one-gluon-emission graphs for deep inelastic scattering, we explain a subtractive technique that is based on gauge-invariant Wilson-line operators. Appropriate organization of subtractions involving the soft region allows a connection to previous work where evolution equations with respect to the directions of the Wilson lines have been derived.
