Beam Performance and Luminosity Limitations in the High-Energy Storage Ring (HESR)

The High-Energy Storage Ring (HESR) of the future International Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) at GSI in Darmstadt is planned as an antiproton synchrotron and storage ring in the momentum range from 1.5 to 15 GeV/c. An important feature of this new facility is the combination of phase space cooled beams with dense internal targets (e.g. pellet targets), resulting in demanding beam parameter of two operation modes: high luminosity mode with peak luminosities up to 2*10^32 cm-2 s-1, and high resolution mode with a momentum spread down to 10^-5, respectively. To reach these beam parameters very powerful phase space cooling is needed, utilizing high-energy electron cooling and high-bandwidth stochastic cooling. The effect of beam-target scattering and intra-beam interaction is investigated in order to study beam equilibria and beam losses for the two different operation modes.

A Precision Measurement of pp Elastic Scattering Cross Sections at Intermediate Energies

We have measured differential cross sections for \pp elastic scattering with internal fiber targets in the recirculating beam of the proton synchrotron COSY. Measurements were made continuously during acceleration for projectile kinetic energies between 0.23 and 2.59 GeV in the angular range $30 \leq θ_{c.m.} \leq 90$ deg. Details of the apparatus and the data analysis are given and the resulting excitation functions and angular distributions presented. The precision of each data point is typically better than 4%, and a relative normalization uncertainty of only 2.5% within an excitation function has been reached. The impact on phase shift analysis as well as upper bounds on possible resonant contributions in lower partial waves are discussed.

Determining Beam Parameters in a Storage Ring with a Cylindrical Hodoscope using Elastic Proton-Proton Scattering

The EDDA-Detector at the Cooler-Synchrotron COSY/Jülich has been operated with an internal CH$_2$ fiber target to measure proton-proton elastic scattering differential cross sections. For the data analysis knowledge of beam parameters, like position, width and angle, are indispensable. We have developed a method to obtain these values with high precision from the azimuthal and polar angles of the ejectiles only, by exploiting the coplanarity of the two final state protons with the beam and the kinematic correlation. The formalism is described and results for beam parameters obtained during beam acceleration are given.

Radiation Damage of Polypropylene Fiber Targets in Storage Rings

Thin polypropylene (CH$_2$) fibers have been used for internal experiments in storage rings as an option for hydrogen targets. The change of the hydrogen content due to the radiation dose applied by the circulating proton beam has been investigated in the range $1\cdot10^6$ to $2\cdot10^8$~Gy at beam momenta of 1.5 to 3 GeV/c by comparing the elastic pp-scattering yield to that from inelastic p-carbon reactions. It is found that the loss of hydrogen as a function of applied dose receives contributions from a fast and a slow component.

Analysis of the Lambda p Final State Interaction in the Reaction p+p->K^+(Lambda p)

The missing mass spectrum measured in high resolution studies of the reaction pp -> K^+X is analyzed with respect to the strong final state interaction near the Lambda p production threshold. The observed spectrum can be described by factorizing the reaction amplitude in terms of a production amplitude and a final state scattering amplitude. Parametrizing the Lambda p final state interaction in terms of the inverse Jost function allows a direct extraction of the low-energy phase-equivalent potential parameters. Constraints on the singlet and triplet scattering lengths and effective ranges are deduced in a simultaneous fit of the Lambda p invariant mass spectrum and the total cross section data of the free Lambda p scattering using the effective range approximation.

Measurement of Spin Correlation Parameters A$_{NN}$, A$_{SS}$, and A_${SL}$ at 2.1 GeV in Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering

At the Cooler Synchrotron COSY/Jülich spin correlation parameters in elastic proton-proton (pp) scattering have been measured with a 2.11 GeV polarized proton beam and a polarized hydrogen atomic beam target. We report results for A$_{NN}$, A$_{SS}$, and A_${SL}$ for c.m. scattering angles between 30$^o$ and 90$^o$. Our data on A$_{SS}$ -- the first measurement of this observable above 800 MeV -- clearly disagrees with predictions of available of pp scattering phase shift solutions while A$_{NN}$ and A_${SL}$ are reproduced reasonably well. We show that in the direct reconstruction of the scattering amplitudes from the body of available pp elastic scattering data at 2.1 GeV the number of possible solutions is considerably reduced.

P-wave dominance in the pd -> 3He pi+ pi- reaction near threshold measured with the MOMO experiment at COSY

The cross section of the pd -> 3He pi+ pi - reaction has been measured at the MOMO facility in a kinematically complete experiment at a c. m. excess energy of Q = 70 MeV. The energy and angular distributions show that the reaction is dominated by p-wave pi+ pi- pairs. This is in complete contrast to the results of inclusive measurements at somewhat higher energies which show a strong s-wave ABC enhancement at low pi pi masses. There are however indications of p-wave pion pairs from other experiments at low Q.

Test of Time Reversal Invariance in Polarized Proton-Deuteron Scattering

A novel test of time-reversal invariance in proton-deuteron scattering is planned as an internal target transmission experiment at the cooler synchrotron COSY. The P-even, T-odd observable is the polarization correlation $A_{y,xz}$ of the total cross section measured using a polarized internal proton beam (polarization $p_y$) and an internal polarized deuterium target (tensor polarization $p_{xz}$). Measuring this observable is a true null test of time reversal invariance and therefore allows to reach a high accuracy. Sufficient luminosity can be obtained using a window-less storage cell placed on the axis of the proton beam. Tensor polarized atoms are produced in an atomic beam source based on Stern-Gerlach separation in permanent sextupole magnets and adiabatic high frequency transitions. The total cross section correlation is measured by monitoring the beam transmission in the COSY storage ring mode of operation. The proton beam momentum will be in the range 2-3 GeV/c. This momentum is ideally suited to test possible short range contributions, i.e. natural parity charged $ρ$-type and unnatural parity $a_1$-type meson exchange contributions. The feasibility of the experiment, systematic errors and the expected accuracy are discussed.
